I have my phone rooted so I can use the hotspot feature and I have no problems with it. When the OTA update came I expected it to kill root and I was prepared for that also. The problem is when the phone reboots and begins installing the update, it ends with an error. It doesn't say what the error is. I'm just wondering if the error might be root related or phone related. Anyone else seeing this problem?
Root related. There is a thread to how to update MJA with MF9 boot loader I HIGHLY recommend that of you truly want to update.

I think your issue is the hotspot mod add to why the update is failing. But I agree with above, I'd go the update route that gets you the update minus the Knox bootloader

My phone is working real good now, good battery life, no dropped calls, etc. I wonder if updating is really worth the effort? I'll have to see what advantages 4.3 will give me. Thanks for the tip on the above thread.
Yes, any modded files in the system partition(hot-spot mod) will cause the OTA to fail. Also, you must be on the stock recovery.

Hello, I went to go check and see if it was true that KitKat came out for the at&t gs4 so I went to go check for an update and it told me I have to wait 15337 hours and 0 minutes until I could check again. Anyway to get passed this by changing the system time maybe? This seems like a joke. My phone is rooted on 4.2.2 and I froze at&t DM manager so it wouldn't automatically update on me (don't know if that could have something to do with it). I wasn't going to update until a new root method came out for the gs4 on KitKat. If anyone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

So do you want to update our not? Your post isn't clear. If you do you're going to have to get rid of root and unfreeze the apps you froze. Easiest way to do that is to flash the mf3 tar files in odin. Backup first of course.
No I do not want to update right now. I want to update when a root method is available. I just was checking to see if KitKat was actually available so when I am going to update, when there is a root method of course, I can, but it says I need to wait 15337 hours and that's my problem so I need to figure out a way to fix that so I eventually can update.

You'll just have to wait 1.75 years and you'll be good to go, lol. No, seriously, you'll need to return to stock and flash the mf3 tar files when you're ready to get the update.
Haha excellent I will do that (the returning to stock way that is). Thank you very much for your help!

You could also just change the date in your settings. I used that to bypass the automatic 24 hour delay between checking for updates, it should work for larger delays as well.

KitKat actually and truly really absolutely is available. Typing this from the official AT&T release. Not to mention all the threads about it.

I thought that would work as well. I'll set up to the exact amount of years and days and see what happens. Thank you.

HI everyone. I think i accidentally installed the wrong firmware on my att sgh-i337 GS4. I'm not positive but that's what I think will happen. Appears that it is not rooted as I ODIN keeps failing. Also wireless does not work so I cannot get any internet connection to work. I just want to get back to ANYTHING usable. KIES does not see my device. Please help me get back to anything. I was trying to help a friend with his phone and ended up in this state so I want to get it back to him working in anyway. I've done a few of these and never had this much trouble. Help please. Thanks.
Just flash the correct firmware in Odin. Do you know what firmware version the device was on?

Awesome! Fixed! Thank you a million. Now, what's the proper way to root this device at this point? I spent at least an hour reading about how to root the sgh-i337 with 4.4.2 which it appears this phone is now running. I don't want to go through that mess again. If you could provide me this step now I would really appreciate it. Again, can't thank you enough.

Okay I will try that again. I did use that first last time and it would appear rooted based on the root checker app then I would reboot and it would say it's not rooted. Additionally things that required root said the phone wasn't rooted.

I know I"m killing you here but i'm treading lightly based on my last experience. The NC1 update I found is only 20mb. Not a full build obviously. The thread says this:
"irst you need to odin back to stock NB1, and then flash the NC1 update in stock recovery.
NC1 update zip can be found here.

Not sure how to do that at htis point. Thanks.

You're current firmware version is nb1. See the last three characters of your build number. Nb1 is not rootable. You'll need to update to the next firmware version which is nc1. The easiest way is to take the over the air, ota, update from your device. Then use towelroot to root, Google it.
Also, in the general forum see and read index, all things at&t.... by @guut13

Pro tip, once you get rooted use titanium backup pro to freeze bloatware. Don't delete it until you're sure it's not needed. If you delete something that's needed you'll be using Odin to get your device to work again.

Thanks for that. I never even though that bloatware would cause any problems with a phone.

i did not install, my device is rooted (safe strap NC1)so i assume that i need to go back to stock before i update.
can anyone confirm that i need to return to stock or can install the update with out returning to stock?
I rooted with towel root on NC1. If I take the pending OTA will it work? I don't care about loosing root access. Wanted to return to stock anyway.

I tried it, it worked.
Info for N00Bs like me:
S4 WAS rooted with towel root
Nothing else was done - no ROMs just rooted STOCK
EDIT: I also restored all apps that I had turned off in the app manager
Took the OTA update and it's working fine just don't have root anymore (OK I wanted to be unrooted anyway)
Uninstalled SU
Done
