Encrypting device - safe with custom ROM/kernel? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've been trying to find a simple answer to this but can't so was wondering if someone can help me out!
I decrypted my device very early on. I'm running latest Chroma with elemental X (android 6.0.1) . However I think I'd like me device to be encrypted. Now I know I can do this via security settings... But I was wondering if this will affect me use of TWRP, flashing ROMs, root etc.
Or will everything just work the same?
Thanks in advance!!

Won't affect anything as far as ROMs and TWRP.
On the other hand I'm in the process of backing everything up so I can format the data partition and run unencrypted.
I prefer the speed. Anyway, encryption doesn't matter if you are running TWRP.
With the file manager in TWRP, I can copy and move files to an unencrypted USB-OTG drive.
With a custom recovery, you data is not safe.

You can encrypt, you'll have no issues with flashing, recovery, etc.

Thanks for your quick replies!

Encryption Stuck at 0%

Old:
So I searched, but no luck. My phone requires a 6 character unlock password to encrypt the device. This is not a power on password, but an unlock password. How do I change that to a pattern or pin? TIA!
Update:
So I went ahead with the 6-ch password, and now encryption is stuck at 0% forever. Is it Jeboo? I unrooted the device and removed SU apk. Thanks.
I'm running Shostock 2.1 BTW.
Anyone out there have any clues where to find an answer? Is it because of Jeboo custom recovery?
I had this exact problem. Yes, it's the recovery. On stock TW and any stock-based roms (and most other roms), the encryption will not start (stuck at 0%) if you don't have the stock recovery. Cyanogenmod is the only rom I've found where encryption actually works. Unfortunately, TWRP 2.6 still doesn't seem to recognize the correct password for me. Additionally, CM doesn't have an option to encrypt the (external) SD card. (Quick note, encrypting the external SD card works everywhere no matter what, it's just device encryption I've been talking about.) I still haven't solved this problem. All I want is to be able to have a decent custom rom with both device and external encryption and have TWRP be able to read them. Apparently that is too much to ask currently. Too bad, oh well. I'm sitting reasonably happy at the moment on unencrypted Goldeneye with OUDHS, but I really wish I had device encryption. If we could somehow find a flashable stock recovery, that might solve the problem, but I don't know for sure, because I can't find one, and I don't know enough to do anything more.

Alright, I thought it was the recovery. I had the same problem with a custom rom on my gs3, but my office disable encryption for me. They can no longer do that under their policy.
Can you install a custom rom and then flash the stock recovery with odin, or will that interfere with the ROM? I really hate the stock bloat, but I need email on my phone so that maybe my only option.
Has anyone tried this with vanilla 4.3 and twrp?
I guess I'll have to go to stock, root, debloat, and unroot.

dont wanna mess up my phone so need steps clarified

Hi,
Have a RAZR m running team win ver 2.5 and it is rooted. Dont know if it is unlocked but I dont think it is. I am on 4.1.2 ver. 66 and am only rooted to enable the Hotspot enablement mod. My phone is also encrypted.
I would like to upgrade to kk because I was told 4.1.2 has security concerns, but after upgrade to kk would want root and sd write permissions restored as well as Hotspot....
Can somebody clarify what I need to do and in what sequence? Also pointers to appropriate downloads?
Many thanks in advance.....
This has everything you need... Use rsd lite to upgrade to kk make sure you upgrade to 182/183.46.10 in case your boot loader is not unlocked which if you have TWRP on there it should be...
We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.
Thanks, good info.
One other question, how do I decrypt my internal storage?
I have tried doing a Full Data reset and it just prompts me for my pins, reboots, launches twrp which fails, then restarts with encryption still active. I upgraded to teamwin twrp 2.6.3 and it also cant do it as it says the data storage is zero and will not mount data so it just fails too.
not sure how to proceed. help would be appreciated.

Root & Encryption on Nougat?

Is there any way to make this work?
Since CF-autoroot doesn't work in nougat, I dunno how to make this work..
I don't know if is even possible, because as soon as i flash TWRP I cannot encrypt it again..
anyone?
For now only way is to install TWRP + SuperSU then flash old recovery
Im not sure but for this process you dont need no-verity-opt-encrypt..
Im on 7.0 Nougat and waiting better way to root it, i dont want custom recovery and i hear when you install TWRP bootloop is granted in 50/50 attempts

But you tried that method? (Flashing TWRP + SuperSU and then back stock recovery)
Crap... Nougat is really nice, but some basic stuff is missing for me... encryption and Xposed

im really sad, so i install custom recovery, flash Nougat debloated rom with root preinstalled and now i lose my CSC, *#060# or any other code not working.. im now on 7.0 UK version stock firmware and UUID codes not working ..
Root and encryption aren't working right now. Chainfire (SuperSU Dev) and a few other users are trying to get it to work.
For the time being, the most you can do is use a ROM like Helios and pick the encryption option. You won't have root but you can flash mods to /system in TWRP
My current setup is
Helios
Stock Kernel
Encrypted
Dual Speaker Mod
Private Mode Works
S Health Works
AppLock Works
Android Pay Works
Banking Apps Work

Well, It's an option... the most interesting mods that I used were with Xposed anyway, and for that the wait is going to be longer.
The device not encrypted is not very nice though... I guess eventually I just try it out meanwhile.
Thanks for the heads up @Galactus
Just out of curiosity, why do you guys "insist" on encryption? I still don't understand the repercussions of a decrypted device, let alone those of an encrypted device. I genuinely don't know. This is not a sarcastic or passive aggressive question!

Mainly data protection.
If my phone is stolen with encryption, once the thief turns the phone off that is it. The phone won't even fully load without my password. Sure, he can fully wipe the phone but this will also delete all of my data. Once reported stolen, it will simply be an expensive media player. Nougat also doesn't let you turn the phone off by using the power button unless you enter the phones password, so that helps using Android device manager or say Cerberus to locate the phone or enable it to play a loud alert
Without encryption. The thief can simply go into TWRP and take all the data
How about sd card encryption? Is this also not possible with rooted nougat? I just tried it and am stuck at the "checking sd card" message since hours. However the device is still working.

Axon 7 Pre-Encrypted Data

Hey guys , Since I upgraded to Nougat, my phone is pre-encrypted and why can't I decrypt it? Why is it like this? I want to decrypt it so that my phone will be a little faster. So how can I decrypt it?
Unlock, install twrp and format data.

Can't I just do it without unlocking? I can encrypt and unencrypt the phone easily(factory rest) on all my other devices? And any clues why is it pre-encrypted?
I suppose you could try a factory reset in stock recovery.

I've reset factory a couple times but that option is not choosable and it is written encrypted.
I mean I haven't even encrypted my phone ever , so why is it encrypted? Is it done automatically? What about yours? Is it pre-encrypted too?

Boot into TWRP and change the data partition type from f2s to EXT4.

Zte stock rom comes pre-encrypted on every new install. The only way to bypass it is to edl flash a stock rom with twrp. Boot right into twrp after the flash. Find a modded stock boot.img that has a modded fstab, flash it, then boot and your phone will be unencrypted with the stock rom.
Thank you all. I'll do as you said and unencrypt it.
DEAR ZTE CUSTOMER,
Pls describe clearly about the situation of your encrypted phone, because our developer confused about such encrypted issues. BTW, please provide your phone'IMEI.
Thank you!

No issues. It is encrypted by default in stock ROM.
This guy seems to be spamming and looking for imei info.
Mine is encrypted. Brand new out of box, updated to B10 MM then to B04 Nougat 7.1.1
What are the implications of it being encrypted? Mine is remaining stock, not even TWRP recovery or root. I'm happy if it's secure as I have personal and work SIM in it and will be using a couple of apps that look for root. Kind of tired of modding phones, just want life to be simple and reliable, able to take updates when I like. The work Nexus 5X was a ****ty phone but I got used to it being updated. It's a rare one that doesn't bootloop and is on Oreo but I hate carrying two phones thus the reason for buying the Axon 7 for dual SIM.

I don't believe you'll get more performance out of an unencrypted phone, or not enough to justify it for that matter. also, on some phones you need it not to be encrypted if you want to see the internal storage in TWRP, but on this phone it doesn't happen.
You can fix it in your settings--hand design(sort of, I guess),or you can update the latest version from ZTE office website. Good luck!

Can I Install A Recovery Besides TWRP?

I am running the latest Android Q, which I really like. Super smooth, fast, and all that. I'd like to sit with it for a while before switching to a CustomROM, but I'd still like to root it, which is where TWRP would come in handy. However, TWRP, last I installed it, had completely encrypted my phone, even with the January patch flashed, with no actual decryption password, thus softbricking it, because I could no longer start into Android. I've restored it, and it works just as well as it used to, but I'd like to root my phone. So, here's my question: Is there any recovery, besides TWRP, that works on the Essential? I've seen Orangefox, which supports treble phones, but I can't seem to find any threads that are about the compatability on other devices. A response will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Hey, you don't need a custom recovery to root your phone. I mean, people have good reasons for using it, but you can still have root without it, if that's enough for you. I never installed TWRP on my PH-1, but still have it rooted since I bought it.
Just use Magisk to patch the boot.img, and you are done. I listed all the steps responding to another thread, so you can check it here.

Thanks for the help, but I'd like to flash when I'm away from my PC, so a recovery is quite important to me. Nevertheless, thank you for the help.
