***Up for testing, have not tested yet myself, please provide logs when it crashs/bootloops etc.: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53731054/RocksKERNEL r0.4.zip***
it includes:
- newest Linaro 4.9.4 Cortex A9 Optimized toolchain
- 1.5 GHz Overclock
- Interactive governor
- deadline io sheduler
- 160 MHz l2 cache (instead of 133 MHz)
- some other tweaks here and there
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey XDA,
today i want to show you my Kernel which will be avaible in future under the name "Rock's Kernel".
What will it feature?
Newest Linaro arm-eabi-4.9 toolchain (Cortex-A9 Optimized)
CPU Overclocking
GPU Overclocking
(You decide with the poll)
Noop i/o sheduler (most likely that or sio or deadline)
and most other i/o shedulers and governors for you to select.
Im wasnt so sure if placeholders are allowed in android development, so I kindly want to ask if I could keep this thread here until im ready to publish my kernel.
Im just stuck at one part before compiling it. I get some errors when I try to clean my makefile...
would be really kind if someone could help me with my kernel
Download will be provided as soon as its done in the Android Development section(expected in a month, maybe earlier)
and of course only if anyone is interested
Would like some feedback, what you think about it and if someone would like to co-dev with me or help me
only one question:why Smartass v2 and noop or sio I/O???

its not final yet, any recommended governors will be taken into consideration.
but I chose it, because smartass V2 is one of the fastest responding governors out there and I like the idea of having a "ideal-frequency". I would probably set that frequency to 800 MHz.
The problem with it is, that it can behave weird on multi-core devices. But then again, this deciscion is not final.
noop because its the simplest governor (-> uses less cpu ressources), sio because its one of the fastest, yet quite simple. (noop can save a small bit of battery too, because cpu doesnt need to ramp as much up)
Edit: Poll opened for you to decide
Quick Poll is open, the one that wins will be the standard for this kernel!
Only YOU decide!
interactive sounds great!!

i flashed it and it didnt happen? wtf. needing help here.
Edit3: Found the bug, Going on from there tomorrow...

on my Nexus 5 overclocking l2 cache greatly improved performance. also its stable as far as i know (franco.Kernel used it too for the s3).
i could make a version without it if you really need it without the l2 oc. it produces no more heat and should generally help the phone perform better.

Its okay about L2 cache though, but on s3 we never had performance issues.we had and we still have MULTITASKING AND ram problems...

yup, as far as i noticed, the Ressurrection-Remix-M Rom has more ram free when nothing is open (i use the ram bar in app switcher) its about 440 mb free when nothing is open, which on the CM13 build 7 Rom i had like 300 mb free most of the time. (with app)
A Kernel could have zRam to help multitasking/apps having to reload. Altough the onboard memory is much slower than ram, it should help it I generally think.
Also the L2 Cache OC is just in RocksKERNEL cause it causes nothing negative, exept maybe like 2-3% less battery a day, if even.
Edit: About the "no performance issues", I played Temple Run 2 on another 1.7 GHz 700 MHz GPU S3, it was smooth, now on my 1.4 GHz S3 its a little choppy/unresponsive sometimes. But yeah multitasking and ram is the major problem, which zRam could take care of at least somehow. :highfive:

Temple run?? Oh cmon i play real racing 3, vainglory and dead effect 2 no probs at all when OC 1,6 ghz and 700 mhz gpu..
We always used zram on s3,cant do much either.
I wish i could just stick 1gb ram more LOL
Or enough money to soare for another phone of course..

So after looking through different builds and moving files around within the builds, I've found that the key to the high IO which gives higher Quadrant scores is the
INITRD file in every build and some updated files. They're different, i've removed the file from one of the builds and have tested it on MDJ's HD builds and Froyo vanilla builds, and for me it works like a charm. Here's What i've done;
Find your build you want to update.
Install your build (or if you already have one booted you're going to use move on...)
unzip, and Place the contents of the zip file in your android folder ( with haret and CLRCAD ) overwrite the old one.
Once the android files are placed, take files on sdcard root, and using Root file explorer, or adb, push the files or copy the files to the following folders;
busybox > system/bin
e2fsck > system/bin
busybox > system/xbin
e2fsck > system/xbin
01data2ext > system/etc/intr.d
Reboot phone and launch android, let it load, then test your quadrants.
I'm not a rom cook, nor a dev, just a Android fan with a lot of time on my hands and wanting to make the IO higher on each build i use.
So credits on this goes to the INITRD file and rom files of the build i'm using which is from, and the idea and research for the Data2SD
If i've missed cited your name, just let me know and i'll add it...

thanks, im trying this now and reporting back
EDIT: does not boot,
as i do that the root folder and the update folder disappear.. (stuck at HTC screen)
same with the older one..
EDIT: im gunna upload my initrd.gz if that helps
here is the attached initrd.gz
doesnt boot for me either with MDJ 7.9
i've updated it with some additions, worked on MDJ for me... test let me know how it goes
where is the zimage taken from? which build?
should be in dev
Installed this on MDJ Revolution HD v.1.2 running 7.9HD Kernel.
Followed the instructions and ran a benchmark
2249
Cpu: 4985
Mem: 1127
IO 4426
2D: 285
3D: 422
Very nice however.
Can't overclock my phone. No longer rooted.
So impressive as it got the above running at 998Mhz.
Would like to see this as an option for overclocked kernels.
Also killed the wireless.
Do you have any more source info on this? Other threads?
Can't we use that with hastarins kernels?

is this possible for XDANDROID/NEOPEEK users?

currently this does have issues with overclocked kernels...
the wifi issue has to do with your wifi being turned on before you copy and reboot the files...
at the moment i've only tested this with MDJ kernels... so i'm unsure if it works for hastarine
all these issues are being worked on, thanks for your patients...

Any visibility of negative impacts?
From what I have read it performs Async file transfers. Eg write back to a degree. Corruption etc?

These files are based off of the DHD roms, also can be used with most sense roms, i've not tried it with Hastarine kernel based roms, only MDJ

I'm unsure of any negative impacts, and as far as corruption, its using file systems that are currently being ran in stable roms.
MDJ Rev 1.7
Will summarize my findings.
Applied the update on MDJ Rev 1.7 DHD Rom. Initially running MDJ Kernel 8.0
Qualcom Scores
TOTAL:1509
CPU: 4346
MEM: 1113
I/O: 1473
2D: 232
3D: 382
Applied the update and got the following
TOTAL: 2249
CPU: 4985
MEM: 1127
I/O: 4426
2D: 285
3D: 422
Significant performance improvement. Even on the CPU which was have some strong ties to the disk.
PRO's
Sense is noticeably faster. Experience is a lot snappier.
Web Browsing rocks. Maps and web surfing are at almost desktop speeds.
CON's
Can't do a hot reboot.
Camera no go
Wireless also broken. Tried twice after prev post.
Lost root access
No overclock.
This is def promising however have gone back to standard as too much loss of functionality.
javolin13, Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
As a further tweak I replaced the updated kernel with the MDJ 8.0
Got this
TOTAL: 1960
CPU: 4393
MEM: 1094
I/O: 3730
2D: 188
3D: 396
However wireless was still broken and didn't test other things.
Different approach
Just applied the Init.gz and the update folder.
Left the MDJ 8 kernel as is. Wireless now working but still no camera or hot restart.
Perm still really good.
sorry for the noob question, isn't there a way to include this on standard roms to make the process easier?
everything works besides camera..
Hello guys, this is my first post in Development Section and this is my really-really first tweak.
Features:
- Improves I/O speed, but I'm not pushing it too much to prevent shorten SDcard life
- Optimize mounting especially for ext3 and ext4 filesystem
- Optimize Sqlite databases from apps (by pikachu01)
- ZipAlign files in /data (by GadgetCheck)
- Optimize touchscreen sensitivity (by GadgetCheck)
- Some sort sysctl firewall
- Clean cache, tmp, and unused files
- Internet speed tweaks
- Battery saver tweaks
- A few /proc/sys/vm and /proc/sys/kernel also build.prop tweaks for faster speed, increase performance and less battery drain
- I set ro.ril.hsxpa = 0 (UMTS only) 'cause maybe it can save some battery since ro.ril.hsxpa = 2 (HSDPA/UMTS) might drain more battery on bad 3G signal coverage
DOWNLOAD
I just tested this tweak a few hours ago so if you guys find any issues with this tweak please inform me, thanks

I haven't got the time to try it yet but logically it's ok since my current tweaks is init scripts only, but my tweaks might not fully functional 'cause other tweak scripts might overwrite the changes that my scripts have made. to prevent this you can rename my scripts especially the first digit into a latest alphabetically order than the other tweak scripts. for example:
one of the SlaidFastMODV2 init script filename is "S95SlaidMod", so you need to rename my scripts into something like this "z86firewall.sh","z87cleaner.sh" and so on. since "z" is the latest alphabetically order than "s" so my scripts will be executed on the last sequence.
don't forget to make nandroid backup before you do this.
Not working for my - got bootloop after installing this. I am using CM 7.2.
Hey Guys,
This is the current state of my Phone:
Rom: 4.2.2 Unofficial : Tudorsirb
Kernel: HackLG
I ve been using Pimp My rom to make my experience better.
Previously i used SuperCharger V6, but was able to charge only supercharge 50%.
Any ideas to improve it?
And any ideas for games (temple run lags like a b*t**)?
Seeder ,also you can try changing kernwl to performance or lag free ... I wouldnt use all the stuff like Pimp my rom then Supercharger or 4cyl. It would mess your phone up over time.

Optimization by AmrAllam7:
Speed Up Apps:
1-Seeder
2-Optimus For Root
3-Seeder V7
4-No Frills CPU
5-And last thing about the speed stuff:
Go to /system/lib/egl/open egl.cfg......--->Delete the hole first line and leave the second one ----->save and exit ----->go to libGLES_android.so and rename it to libGLES_android.so.bak ----> reboot and enjoy
seederV7 (and no seeder because it's an appli ,not a flashage .zip ) is good but light...the Entropy in Fly-on-mod or Crossbreeder ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2113150 ) are much stronger ! best !
No frills CPU is completely useless with all customs roms because it's already integrated on the parameters ( called "performance" , if it's not visible : tap many times the "build number" on "about phone") ,the same thing ......... it's only for stock rooted !
the 5 decrease very seriously batery !
Optimus for root is unknown ...

Sorry if its already been answered but can I use Ubuntu 14.04 to do this? what advantage does 12.04 have?
You can use either Ubuntu 14. However this does not affect anything(about kernel). But I preferred the version 12 because it is more popular, and if problems "arise", it's easier to find solutions.

Can this work for my s4 I9506 stock kernel
Kind of over complicated?
No need to modify .bashrc to build kernels, also nautilus-open-terminal, and synaptic arent needed in any way for kernel compilation and its kinda bad practice to auto accept with sudo apt-get install -y.
Also I dont think java is needed to build kernels (since they are mostly C and assembly code), but oracle java 6 is usually what is recommended for android builds.
Basically all you really need to do is install the required packages, download kernel source and desired toolchain, then run these lines in terminal to get your zImage-
export ARCH=arm
export CROSS_COMPILE= <directory to toolchain>
make <your kernel default config>
make -j<number of threads>
That way makes it much easier to try out different toolchains and toolchain versions

kernel building for different devices is pretty much all the same, all that differs is the kernel source, defconfig and sometimes a few extra commits to work with linaro toolchain. And if you use the arch specific toolchains you need to pick the right one for your device

Seems legit Just curios to see if any bit improvement were made, but im sure this custom is 100% performance better
Regards.
Is this rom really faster/better? I find the stock already fast and stable. And the latest firmware has stability improvements. I play games like gta, ganstar, asphalt and others. Do you suggest this rom?
Well im near to test it, need some times more..
A guide to flash would be usefull but i think it's Just this:
Unlock bootlader
Flash twrp
Wipe all (data system cache dalvik etc)
Flash the. Zip
Reboot, done. Right?
For root need the super su flashable?
More thing before mod my smartphone:
(With root)
Possibile to change boot animation?
Lock unlock sound?
Possibile to add power sound? Like on some Huawei
Will be able to use substratum?
And for xposed?
Thx in advice

- de-odexed and zip aligned some apps, for stability
- more debloat

- more rendering optimizations...... smoother......
note:
- please be patient on first boot.... it takes longer, since some core apps were deodexed
