Has anybody used this to restore data from a previous phone? I can't get the desktop setup to go through.
I used it for SMS backup only and did not have a good experience. I would advise against it.

I've a question. Is there any way we can retain all the data i.e. Contacts, SMSs, Applications when changing from 1 Build to another?
Eg I currently using [darkstone HD2Froyo v1] and wanna change to mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense. So is there any way to do that without losing on the Apps, Contacts, SMSs?
Bump , I am wondering about the same thing too.
For personal data (except text messages), you can set up a Google email and sync. Your contact details will appear each time you load a new ROM.
For backing up programs you can try Astro File Manager which allows you to back up and reinstall all of your programs.
......not sure how to deal with. Text messages.

Use MyBackup and MyBackupPro(Paid App) and you can backup and restore your apps and your contacts, call logs, SMS, MMS etc. The apps can be restored along with the settings for the apps so you dont have to setup the apps after restoring.

cause i like em titanium build is for rooted devices and my build isnt rooted

Just wondering what is the fastest or easiest method to completely copy over everything from one vibrant to another as I just got my replacement today. I would love to copy all my apps and settings. Also will I lose all the apps I purchased? Thanks!!

Your contacts, calendar should be synced to gmail already. Try using mybackup pro or titanium backup for things like app data but I believe you still have to download the apps to your phone again. Purchased apps are saved to your purchase history via gmail

If your are rooted use Titanium Back up. MyBackup Pro is good for things like text.

Firstly, my phone is unrooted and running the stock vodafone rom (2.1) that the phone came with on day 1.
I've seen that froyo has been released for the wildfire. Whilst waiting for vodafone to push it to me I was wondering how do I backup my sms messages, contacts, keyboard dictionary etc?

You come into market and Download My Backup Pro and creates backups of both apps and data.
Are there any free apps that do the same?
Contacts can be backed up to your google account or to sd card via contacts app. sms, use sms backup from market.

I think the MyBackup free version works fine but when you come to reinstall apps you have to do them one at a time. if you are going to do it regularly id suggest buying the app as its so much easier.
Or try Titanium Backup.

Titanium Backup should be able to handle it.
I am sure there are free apps out there but this one syncs all of this onto your gmail and will allow you to download onto your nexus:

+1 on smsbackup.
I use a app called Super Backup. It backups call logs, text messages, and contacts to your sd card. Then use titanium backup for my apps.

+1 on SMS Backup. Its the best for our phones. Another cool thing is that it stores eveything in that html file. You can pull it to your desktop and edit in text that never happen. Then restore it. Hehehe.

Helium still the best way when considering my Note 4 is locked?
it did not work perfectly when I move from my Samsung s3 to the note but not sure if Helium is really my only option

SMS's are synced to google I believe if you are using hangout.
For my backup restores I use Titanium backup, but remember that it'll only backup/restore system and apps settings and data and no personal data like images, sms, contacts etc. But if you have google backup setup transfer should be smooth for photos, sms, contacts etc.

I think hangout syncs all your messages automatically to the cloud. I can say this as per my experience of before and after rooting my nexus 5 on android 6.0. For root I had to wipe clean my phone and after root, hangout automatically synced all old SMSs back to my nexus 5. So I think before wiping out you can try to install hangouts on some other device and sign in with same ID that you have on Note 4 and see if your messages appear on new device. I think that would be the best way to check.

And by google backup I meant google account's sync service. If you use google photos, use backup option to move all photos to google and it'll be available on new device when you sign in with same account on new device using google photos. And all your contacts and other preferences are saved by google account so its matter of logging into the new device with same google account and checking how many things you were able to restore. For remaining like music and videos move them manually.
There is no easy way of moving everything to new android device in Android ecosystem unlike iOS where iTunes does everything for you (but again if you are jailbroken, even iTunes cannot sync everything).
I cant help with SMS/MMS, thats why Hangouts is great. BUT, I can help with the application data. I just pushed out a new version of my script, which, among other things, adds support for backup and restore of app data. Might help you out here.

Titanium Backup is only way to transfer SMS without using Hangouts.
Will work between any Android versions and types as long as you use the XML SMS backup option.

I thought helium transferred sms, just not mms?
OK guys. I'll try to see what happens when I load hangouts. I didn't realize it was backing up sms. I did use titanium back when I had my S3 rooted. That worked perfectly. Helium - yeah I lost mms
Chevycam - so it's just a tool that does adb backup? Works on any phone regardless of root status?

How well did it work? Did you copy everything?
Backed up everything from my prior phone via Titanium Backup
Save to computer
Cut and paste onto the 6P
Restore.. although this time around, I restored only the apps and not the app data so I can start clean.

Worked well.. Once I logged into the 6P, I let Google download all my apps. I then restored the backup, which restored most of my data. It did not seem to copy my Nova Launcher settings, so I had to copy that manually. It also does not copy Bluetooth connections, so you will have to set those up again. Overall, I was pretty happy with it. I didn't want to root the phone, so I didn't do a titanium backup.

Ouch. Certainly better than nothing but my Nova is huge with all my apps. I guess knowing this you can export/import the nova settings

Yes, it's independent of the device connected. Root doesn't matter. But be aware, in order to back up APPS, you need root. Backing up the App DATA does NOT require root. Apps won't back up, even with Titanium Backup, without root.
So my experience...
1) Hangouts doesn't backup sms or at least it doesn't seem that it does. Used SMS Backup and Restore and that seems to have done the trick
2) I tried using Helium but I'm not sure what drivers to use so gave up on that
3) If Google is backing up app data in Lollipop, it has to be bare minimum. Honestly, I'm not sure what it actually did backup
4) I realized that I really don't need the backup besides SMS. It would have been easier to handle transferring stuff sure but there are only a handful of apps that I wanted to transfer settings over and they all had options to Export settings.
Oh well. Hopefully the new backup on Marshmallow will hopefully provide a better experience. It did ask while setting up the phone whether I want to do a restore through NFC from another phone - it just neglected to mention that it's not a Lollipop option

Almost no apps use API 23 which is required for the new Google backup. Only choices are helium or adb backup
