Not a user of the 2.2 full android.
Would have thought spin down would be controlled by the storage controller on the chip. I doubt Android has any built in mechanism to control this.

Ok! But why constant spinning on native firmware even sleep mode even can hear of spinning sound and small bit kind of vibrating?! Don't think this is main job controlled by controller (chip on hdd) there should be some OS or most likely and probably kernel command (deep sleep) when nothing goes through cpu. Take example: if you watching move from hdd - ok goes fine - when you press pause - last point has been stored in ram - and cpu stay idle and same time giving after certain time hdd goes in idle rest mode (something similar when you watching move from external hdd on pc - pressing play and move goes bit with kind of delay letting hdd fireing up first - sometimes you can even hear start point of spinning)
Maybe I'm wrong but this is my theory how should be

I have used stickmount, USB otg helper and also native otg in custom roms. while transferring files by solid explorer or root explorer once I turn off screen I can't turn it on again until the transfer is complete
I've noticed this too.
I'm not sure if is completely blocked out (until completion), or just horrendously slow responding to interrupts generated by screen touches/button presses. I seem to remember waking the screen up - after a huge delay - on a multi-minute data transfer.
While it is annoying, it really doesn't surprise me much; most modern OS'es seem like their UIs slow down to a crawl under heavy I/O pressure between slow mass storage devices.
I suppose one cruddy workaround is to turn off the screen timeout ahead of the long copy operation...

If it we're so then it would slow down even when the screen was on instead becoming unresponsive the instant screen was turned off

Yeah ... maybe. I'm not sure. In the past, I experienced difficulty in waking other android devices that had low OC minimum frequencies that would otherwise behave just fine so long as the screen stayed on. I don't know if interrupts start to stack up, or what, but I suspect that the rate governor behavior affects this, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that a screen-off condition figures into the hueristics used by some rate governors or even kernel PM (power management) code. But that's speculation - I don't know.
I guess you could look at this as a feature rather than a bug - if you are performing a long copy, tapping on the power button tells you if it is done!
I am using file manager HD which works well in copying , although there is a 1-2 second delay in unlocking screen when copying, but still it works fine

Sleep on power removed

I'm planning on installing my Flo Nexus in my car to replace the outdated stock navigation system. I was quite interested in Timur's USB ROM but it doesn't support Flo and doesn't look like he'll be adding it after cancelling the indiegogo campaign he started to fund it.
I've spent some time searching and looking at the different kernels and roms available, and for now am running ElementalX 1.7beta with an older CM nightly.
I think this meets most of my needs, but I have one little nitpick - is there anything out there that separates the "Wake on plug" action into two separate functions? I'd like the screen to wake up when power is applied, but not when power is removed as this is going to leave the screen on when I get out of the vehicle. Ideally when power is removed I'd like it to go to deep sleep immediately.
Thanks.
I've never used the app Tasker. But isn't that what people use when trying to accomplish that?

I've used tasker for different things, but have found it unreliable when it came to power events, at least in the past. I'll definitely give it a shot and see how it works for this scenario. Thanks for reminding me.
Any other suggestions out there in case Tasker doesn't do the trick, or other votes for Tasker?
I got an app called "Caffine" which keeps the screen on while plugged in/charging, and when I turn the car off I set the backlight to 15 seconds, that way it sleeps after 15 seconds. Works great.
If you don't mind me asking, how are you installing the tablet into your car?

I have an '06 Acura TL with OEM Navi system. I'm having a car audio shop relocate the navi screen (as it's tied to climate functions but I don't need to see it) and they're putting the tablet in its place. The goal is to have things looking stock while be far from it.

It's part of a complete stereo install I'm doing, and it's not cheap although it's not rip-off expensive either. I chose them because they are capable of doing good fabrication work and are going to need to put something together to hold the tablet securely in place behind the stock bezel.
Just wanted to update for people to know what I did. Tasker was the way to go to get exactly what I want, but I needed to add the Secure Settings plugin as well. With that plugin I was able to immediately turn on the screen when power is applied, as well as shut off the screen immediately when power is removed.
I've also attached other bits to these profiles, such as adjusting the CPU clock and disabling wifi/bluetooth when the screen is off. At this point I'm losing less than 10% battery for 24 hours of sleep, which is pretty good although I'd like to see if I can find any improvements. We'll see!

Turn off the Nexus Player?

Hi,
How do you turn off the Nexus player? I can't find an option for it, I had to just switch off the power instead.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

There is no "off" on the Nexus Player, just like the Chromecast. It goes into a low powered standby mode after a few minutes, waiting for any Google Cast connections to wake it up and start playing (with HDMI-CEC enabled on TV or receiver, it'll automatically turn on, switch inputs, etc to start playing your cast immediately).

Like @Elrondolio already mentioned, there is no "Power Off" feature (which I HATE!!!). However, you could look for some kind of switch that you could attach to the power adapter cord so that you don't have to unplug every time that you want to turn the device off...something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1125 (though, I have no idea whether or not that specific cord actually will work...I'm just presenting the concept). I've done this with my raspberry pi and it's awesome!
Another option would be to plug the player into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch (which would be much nicer than the cord IMO).

I'm truly not trying to be confrontational here, simply curious: why do you hate that it's always on (in low power mode) so much?
To me, I see it no different than another phone or tablet in my home as it has nearly the exact same innards... all of my family's phones and tablets are on 24/7 as well, either on battery or charging on the mains. Having to boot up the box for a quick cast to show a quick video/trailer/etc to the family or start playing some music would be an inconvenience, I'd think, as having to wait for a receiver to boot its OS every time would be.
Again, simply curious as to your reasoning is all. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for your explanation.
I also have a Chromecast installed on my TV and I don't have any problem with it being always on WHEN my TV is turned on. However for the nexus player it will be truly always on unless you switch off the main.
I just got my nexus player yesterday so I dunno if it will be warm/hot if it's always on even when not in use. Anyway if it's not warm/hot if not in use then I've got no problem with it.
Thanks again everyone!

agreed, a reboot option would be nice. a 3rd party app can achieve this with root. such as: power menu

No worries about being confrontational, everybody has there own likes/dislikes...nothing wrong with that. Part of it is the made desire for efficiency that I have...why have something consuming power and bandwidth when it's not being used? Also, the amount of time that I and my family are using it is far less than the time that we aren't using it, if I was using it all day, I might not mind so much. Also, it's nice to do a reboot without unplugging the device, especially since I want to put it in a cabinet that is somewhat of a tight space. But, probably one of the biggest things that comes to my mind is connection to the internet on a 24/7 basis really bugs me. I know that my phone and my wife's phone is always connected...but it needs to be to notify me of things, my TV isn't notifying me of anything, I just want to use it when I want some good old couch potato entertainment, so why take up my bandwidth (I assume that it does some kind of check) and use any amount of power (which I do pay for, no matter how little the power usage is) when it isn't needed?
Personally, I believe that the following principle (highly advocated by Google) should have been followed: "Decide for me but let me have the final say" (http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/principles.html#decide-for-me). In other words, give the option to leave it on all the time for those that want it...but allow for powering off for those who don't. That way, everybody is happy.
I know this isn't an on-device fix, but if you're seriously concerned about your TV accessories only being on when the TV is on, there are many power strips out there that have a "master" outlet that toggles power to the rest of the outlets based on when the master device is on. So turning your TV on and off will switch power to the rest of your devices.
A reboot option would be nice. As for turning the NP off, I am using a TRIPP LITE TLP76MSG Eco Green Switched 7 Outlet Conserve Energy Surge Protector from Amazon.
Just an update, I found that when not in use the player is cool to the touch. As such I believe it goes into a low power/power saving mode. I have no issues with it being always on now. Way to go, google/asus. :good:
Confirmation of sleep mode
My nexus player's light is always on. Does anyone know if this means the unit is on or in sleep mode after the 30 minutes of inactivity? I have set it to 30 minutes and daydream does come on. Based on the manual, when the light is on the unit is on.
Thanks
https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123074?hl=en&ref_topic=6121506
I think the light just means it has power, so it can be in sleep mode even when the light is on.
This was my main concern yesterday.
(I had since a week ago the Nexus Player but due my Internet provider's laziness, it was not until last night I could FINALLY setup my account and the device).
I noticed the DayDream options but I agree that the same OS needs an reboot option.
Mine doesn't switch back on when the TV is turned on again. Just a black screen and doesn't respond to pressing buttons on the remote.

I recently brought a Nexus Player, I am having the same problem like you. Is this a problem with the software?
Understand that you can't power off the Nexus Player, but will it damage the internal components of the player (flash drive, etc) in the long run if you just simply cut off the power supply, which is apparently the only way to off the device?

annoying remote control since - under marshmallow

Laggy remote since updated remote firmware which comes with 3.0, sometimes double presses sometimes random volume increasing/decreasing up and down (specially night time when everybody sleeping at house ).
anyone have something similar???
anyone knows how to fix(reset/reinstall)? (maybe some software where can re-flash remote firmware through direct connected USB cable an PC...etc)
p.s. i start remembering when i updated vulkan developer preview on the firs boot-up i walk through remote and controller firmware update - and it was toked me a "Suspicious" good time around 5-10min, ...maybe there was some corrupted installation process in result now is some glitch .....
I can no longer power up the unit from the remote, I have to physically press the power button on the unit

since the update to 3.0 and the correspondimg FW update for the input devices, my shield remote is also misbehaving, especially when using netflix or kodi. using the cricular direction pad, presses are registered as select instead of up or down, so scolling through lists is more or less impossible. the volume also jumps up and down...
as far as i know theres no way to downgrade the fw for the remote...

Ok, I thought I'm only who have this kind of laggy remote, looks like this is bug which comes with firmware v3.0. Hopefully nvidia will take care about this in nearest future. P.s. And also I believe there is some option about re-flash firmware of remote - well...probably (yet) not for the home users - coz when u connecting remote to Windows through micro usb windows starts installing remote drivers (interesting for what then?!) ...who knows maybe need some simular application like odin for Samsung or flastool for Sony Xperia etc, some bin or img file, maybe also kind of button combinations and job would be done.

Shield TV 2019 Ram Management

Hello. I was hoping someone who is experienced with both the standard and pro units of 2019 could help me in this matter. Both of these units are extremely hard to get ahold of right now or I would test myself, sorry to bother.
I was able to get my hands on a standard unit and everything is working as expected except it has horrible ram management. Either that or just lacking ram in general. I can't get any app to stay in ram. If I leave to simply look at the settings menu, when I return to the app it completely refreshes. I might, come back to see it in its same state if I only look at one app but don't click on anything, but thats not guaranteed.
No sense in even having an app switcher when it behaves like this. Its as if the developer option that forces all apps to close when you exit them is somehow enabled. I checked in developer settings and it shows disabled. I also disabled eco mode for all the apps I use and it didn't change anything.
I'm thinking the standard unit just doesn't have enough ram to keep up with demand. But i can't test to be sure. Can anyone with a pro unit confirm that they can browse through a few apps and then return to their original app and it be in the exact state you left it?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
i've basic Shield and i also keep researching this frustrating issue. Some apps will return to their previous some not.. Plex (the most used app) is the most problematic, always restarts even when just going briefly to settings. Can't imagine it's poor on Pro unit also. That's why i keep Basic version, and only upgrade to "Pro Platinum 2021" with 8GB RAM later
i would really like the app switching LG TV does - but i must admit Shield UI can be even faster (when it's not freezing).
Stability ** (tons of freezes and crashes, fan should not run in quiet mode)
Speed ***** (ultra fast UI and apps especially can be faster than WebOS, the only slow app is Plex)
App management *** (poor app switching, nice app widgets on home layout, not good integration - can't search all content AGAIN grr.. yeat another device whose global search will only throw some youtube results)
Connectivity **** (Dolby vision flickers, otherwise nice companion to AV receiver and a must for TVs without eARC)
Control *** (i like the backlight buttons, but in the end i switched back to TV remote which can control it too, and can display inputs so well, and i hate more than 1 remote.. also arrow keys are so small that i'm making mistakes frequently)

I have a Shield TV 2017 and the new Shield TV Pro and they are all the same with ram managment. You pause a show and then go to another app or two and when you come back the entire app has to refresh and you have to find your show again to start it. Some apps refresh every time for no reason, just like you say. In comparison, the Apple TV 4k (which has the same exact 3gb of ram), can have as many as 11 apps open without refreshing and I can have 4 different movie streams paused at the same time and I can switch between them at any time. They end up staying in ram for many days at a time. Its nice to return to an app 4 days later to finish a movie and its right where you left it and all you have to do is unpause.

Have you found a solution yet?
Is there anything is the developers menu that we could tinker with?
