How to turn off phone without screen - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my wife sadly dropped my new Moto X Pure before I ever even got to see it, and shattered the screen. Display comes on fine but touchscreen is nonresponsive.
Other than just waiting for the battery to die, is there a way to turn the phone off while awaiting my new screen from China?

Nothing else you can really do .. Just wait a few days & let it die ..
On the 3rd or 4th day if you want, you can charge it while it's turned off, while your waiting!

Hold power button....

If I hold it down long enough it eventually reboots, but doesn't actually shut down. If I get it to reboot, can I get from there into download or recovery mode, and can I get from there to shut down without using the touchscreen?

adb shell halt?

I guess I will need to experiment to see if I can get to download mode without starting from "shut down", but from the middle of a reboot.

Hold Power + Vol Down. for a long time. It'll boot to bootloader. There is a "Power Off" option you can scroll to with vol keys.

Sure she wasn't mad because you bought a new phone and slammed it down on purpose?

If so she put on a pretty good act because she was very very apologetic even though I told her it was no big deal. In fact she just saw your post and was a little insulted.

So... Are you unable to turn it on due to no fingers?
Lol yea what happened?
Well, we need a bit more info.

1. have you tried "power button" ?
2. have you charged the phone ?
on a bright side, you are the 1st one !
Maybe your battery is loose? Not to mention that bricking a
phone is usually due to screwing up a software flash. So, is brick really the right word?

Try holding down the volume down button as you turn the phone on...see if that does anything.
Only time I'd allow the "First" comment to be used in a thread.

Thank you guys
I think it's bricked, and unrecoverable.
After several flashing, It suddenly turned off then never woke up again. Any effort so far is hopeless

I tried with captivate stock firmware, i9000 international firmware, then I flash back to vibrant stock firmware.
After had things done with Odin, my phone restarted, and it was the last time I saw my baby working as a smart phone.

If you are stuck on the phone to PC screen, you are NOT bricked. During development, I ended up getting into this state a couple times myself. You can still get into download mode in the same fashion.
Connect your phone to USB so you get the phone->PC screen. Press and hold both volume up/down. Then press and also hold Home. Then start pressing and holding power for 2 seconds. After 2 seconds, let go of power. Continue holding volume up, volume down, and home, until you get into download mode.

no, a completely blank screen.
no icon, no GUI, no nothing (
Yeah, weird...I just flashed back to US firmware and now my phone is totally unresponsive to everything. Keep in mind I've flashed back and forth several times...even once thought my phone was bricked because the power button wouldn't even turn the screen on. But after holding the correct buttons it finally booted into download mode. I was even using my phone earlier just fine, and having it run quadrant test of 1700, but as soon as I flashed back to 100% stock US firmware, my phone now no longer boots. Go figure lol.
Though this time I think it has bit the dust for real, lol. So be weary of flashing back to US firmware if you are flashing a lot of different other firmwares. Cuz I think something happens and the key combinations get deleted so it refuses to boot into any mode.

I"m at the phone to pc screen..but the Home button is not a "button" it's a touch sensitive button on my vibrant and it won't go into download mode...
I got here because i flashed the custom kernel to put the market and data on a ext4 partition...and it reversed my volume buttons and reversed the routing of sound..headphone speaker..that stuff....so i couldn't hear anything...so when i went to reflash stock t-mobile firmware it told me not to unplug for like hours..it wasn't doing anything.....i took the battery out and now i'm stuck at phone to pc...i think i might just use the warranty..seeing as u can't do a think with it...atleast i can't that is..i feel like a moron...
the forum said to work on com7 but com4 was showing up in odin...i couldn't get it to go on com7 so i thought it should still work....

what was your combination?
I hold volume up and down..then hold home with those..then power for 2 seconds..let go and nothing...it doesn't recognize i'm holding the home because it's a software based button..the home key that is..and with no software...no button...so i'm afraid this screen means bricked...adb reboot download won't work either...i'm gunna get it exchanged in the morning..under buyers remorse..

[Q] Oh no Bricked!

I tried to update my firmware last night using odin (I've used it several times for my Galaxy S) and it failed, the error message was something along the lines of "write operation failed"
after waiting 25mins to see if my tab would reboot it didn't so I held down the power button to restart it and it switched off and now it won't switch on again ....
I've tried plugging it into all my usb slots, charging through the wall charger and tried using android commander but nothing makes the screen pop up with that little image of a computer and phone.
I can't even get into download mode, and odin doesn't pick it up. I think it's bricked for good,
I had a issue with the USB cable and had to get it replaced by samsung, now my ELF (Early-Life Failure) is up so I don't know what to do.....
Any Suggestions?
It's ok buddy its not bricked just plug in to the usb on the pc with odin3 on and leave at for a wile and it will come right back up.

So I think its a costly paperweight atm

Ok so It's still bricked.... I forgot to mention the buttons don't work eg. I push and hold the power button and it does nothing. I charged it for the day so it should be 100% battery and now odin isn't finding it still. Also I didn't have USB debbuging enabled :/
Now I will admit I don't have a Tab(til next month) but wouldn't you un brick it the same way you do a Samsung Vibrant?
(Am not trying to be smart, just trying to find out everything I can before I buy it)...And on that note is there a 32GB version out?

Have you tried dropping the phone into Recovery Mode?
There is some confusion on what buttons to press where some say to press and hold the Volume Up AND Power Buttons simultaneously, whereas others mention pressing the above AND the Back Button.
If you can get into Recovery Mode you may be able to restart the phone.
If not and Revery Mode works try dropping the phone into Download Mode which is the same for RM but you press the Volume Down instead of Up.
With DM you will then be able to use third party software (Odin & a suitable ROM image from samfirmware'com) to bring the phone back up and running.
Yep tried all that tried
Power + Volume Up
Power + Volume Down
Power + Volume Up + Down
Power + Volume Down + Home
Power + Volume Domn + Up + Home
so um.... nothing makes the phone start

You mentioned Home button but not the Back Button.
I take it that does not work either?
Sorry forgot to menton that ... tried all possible combos for that too .... and adb won't detect the tab which kinda really make me think its brick for good :/
Its not bricked.
Power it off, and power it back on holding the vol down button and the power button.
When you see the computer---!---phone icon, release the keys, and connect it to a pc with an open odin. It will get recognized ( even though you dont get the download mode, you are in it ).
After that, flash whatever you need.
Try that and let me know.

Power button not responding

Moments ago I noticed my powerbutton not working, wouldn't turn the phone off. So I removed the battery and now it can't power on (because the button doesn't work). Is there a way to power it on somehow? I don't really want to buy a new phone

Looks like a hardware issue, and to fix that you'll probably need to change the physical button.
To power the phone on, just connect it to the charger, it will start.
I too have the same problem, just started around this thread's start date too.
Oh yeah, and connecting it to the charger doesn't work, and the only way I can get any life out of it is to pop the battery out, put it back in, but even then it only goes to the "SAMSUNG" logo screen and then blacks out again.
I feel like it may be the power button itself, because I managed to turn it on when I pressed the button fairly hard, so maybe the button is pressed in and stuck to some extent?

In your case it's definitely the physical button and you'll need to change it. Maybe there are some video tutorials on how to clean/change it, check it out.

Then it's not the hw button itself, I stand corrected. Looks more like a soft/firmware issue, considering the power adapter doesn't power up the phone.

Can not get A500 into APX mode

Hello All,
Had to send my A500 back to Acer after it failed; since they returned I have not been able to use Power + Vol Up to get into APX mode... any ideas on how to get this to work again?
The way that I get into APX mode is to press and hold the reset button then press and hold the power button (don't let up on the reset button yet) for three seconds, release the power button, then after one second more release the reset button. The timing is a little touchy, so really, 3 seconds on power and one more on the reset... You probably already know this but the screen will be black, the power button will be lit and unless you are hooked to a pc there really isn't anything going on that makes you think that something meaningful has happened...
One other thing. I think that the power/vol+ combo starts a install of update.zip if it exists. Power/vol- boots into recovery.

Did you mean you cannot get into the recovery?
If you sent it to Acer you probably have to re root it.
As stated above....apex mode is achieved with reset and power button from powered off state.

[Q] HELP! My Tab 7.7 can't boot!

Anybody knows what's wrong and how do I solve it? Here's the entire story (if it helps):
I went to Play and updated my apps. I press and held the power button and selected "restart". (I restart my device regularly) However, after shutting down, it does not boot at all and no matter how many times I press the power button it just wouldn't boot up!
I tried charging it too. Nothing happens even after plugging in.

Can you get to the boot loader, if so, try to wipe data from the recovery within the boot loader.
Or else leave the battery to drain fully , this will solve your problem and the tab will boot.
This happened to me couple of weeks ago and draining the battery solved this issue.

Nope. I wish it did.
Try to hold the power button in about 4 or 5 seconds. I doubt it'll do anything. It sounds like there's a problem with power button or hardware.
I had a thrive 7 before I got my gtab 7.7 and my first one I exchanged because of a problem identical to yours. It was very sketchy to power on.
Exchange or warranty if you can unless someone else has any ideas

Only alternative left to leave it till battery drains, if you can remember the battery percentage before this happens, otherwise i am out of solutions.
A service center would be an alternative choice.
