Some issues with my nexus 6p, what are your thoughts? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

issue 1, Sometime while listening to music on my phone; it starts to sort of clip the audio. It happens randomly with any music (possibly any sounds) using the headphone jack. this is not a consequence of volume nor a consequence of source. the only cure is time. I have tried rebooting the phone and clearing ram, nothing helps. I have tried lowering the volume, switching sources such as my saved spotify music, google play music , youtube, youtube music. I also have tried different headphones, speakers and even different cars. the issue remains the same. my only conclusion is that is a software bug because of the inconsistency. any ideas?
Issue 2, Boot time. I just timed my boot time on my rooted 6p. it is 2:05. is it just me or is that hella long for a new phone?
Issue 3, Lag outs and lock ups. My phone frequently will lag out or lock up causing he phone to be unusable until i clear the ram, the odd thing is that i am no where near 3gb of ram used. usually around the low 2's. any solutions?
Issue 4, Using the camera to record video. Yesterday i had a friend record my speech in class, when i got my phone back,My phone had locked up after i left the camera app and the back was incredibly hot. he recorded me in 1080p. I do not imagine there is a solution. just thought i would post the issue.
Chances are i will be contacting Project Fi and get a new phone from them.
As you can imagine i am a little frustrated with this device, I purchased what a thought to be a flagship-esque nexus and I it has turned out to be my least favorite phone I have ever owned.

I would RMA it. Sounds like you got unlucky and possibly have a hardware issue...could be a bad board.

Yours must be defective, I got mine yesterday and I've not run into any of the issues you describe. I haven't filmed yet but absolutely no lag or locking up. My music (Spotify) is fine as well, just have an issue with my Turtle Beach headset (software related I think).
I'd RMA if I were you.

Do you possibly have an app behaving badly? Have you tried clearing the Cache Partition and doing a Factory reset?

Yeah I did factory reset it once. Nothing changed.

You've got bad hardware, contact Google for a return.

Not scientific but less than 1 minute to go from boot warning to home screen.
Two minutes seems long.

Phone freeze/crash

So I was watching a video on YouTube today (an s7 edge teardown video ironically) when all the sudden the picture froze and the phone started making a loud buzzing noise and was unresponsive to touch. I held the power down and the phone reset. Upon rebooting the phone was majorly lagging and struggled to catch up with any input commands. It finally smoothed itself out and seems fully recovered from the freeze up/crash now but my question is has anyone else experienced or heared of this on this device or any ideas as to what may have caused it?
Just happened to me watching a video on Facebook anyone have any answers yet s7 edge 32gb gold
I noticed something whaky when watching YouTube videos but I had read it had to do with the 1440p resolution... So I changed it to 1080p and it's been fine since... Maybe the app needs an update.
I'm on Verizon with an S7, but fwiw, mine just crashed as I was watching *cough*...a certain type of video... in chrome incognito.
Anyway, I tried everything, but only managed to get a few sounds and vibrations out of the device for 5 minutes. Then the camera flashlight turned and stayed on for about 10 minutes, but the sounds and all other responsiveness ceased. Finally about 15 minutes later, some button mashing somehow got me into maintenance boot mode, where I went into safe mode and rebooted from there. Everything seems to be normal again though. Incredibly strange. I've only had it for 3 days and not even changed much from stock yet.

The same exact thing happened to me with buzzing sound while watching YouTube. But mine automatically restarted. I'm thinking of returning this phone
I exprienced this problem today while watching youtube. The phone freezed and I had to reset it. Does anyone know what might have cause this?+
This happened to me when setting up Samsung Pay. Had to hard boot.

Same thing happened to me while watching YouTube as well on my s7 edge. I'm concerned.
I had the same problem. I cleared the cache and it's working fine now.
Had the same problem watching a YouTube video days ago. Hasn't happened since thankfully.
Did you guys disable a bunch of apps in the system?
were any of you using the phone in a case. I noticed that I was listening to streaming radio ( on lte) and playing candy crush and twice the phone crashed and rebooted. I noticed the phone was very hot. I do have a case and I havent tried it without the case to see if I could replicate the issue.
I have been having random freeze and reboots a least 3-4 times a day. Hoping a software update fixes it
This also happend to me only while watching youtube thankfully I was at home and not out in public nowhere bc the loud sound was so loud it was kinda scary. This has happend to me twice so far and idk if it has anything to do with it but I was using a custom theme both times. And using stock theme it has never happend.
Have ANY of you guys tried to wipe your cache from recovery settings? In having horrid battery life so I did this and it took away some lag I was having. Hopefully makes my battery life better

my phone completely crashed during the new update! Tmobile is sending me a new phone
Me too when I was watching youtube
At launch my phone was working fine. Up until the last update (not the latest July 8th one) and after my phone would crash constantly. It only crashed once during a YouTube video. But crashes in any another things I'm doing.
The sound cuts out too, but I'm not entirely sure if it's the wwe supercard game I play or not 99% happens when I'm playing that game. But it has happened in other apps. The keyboard stops making sounds, YouTube or Facebook video wouldn't play audio. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes I gotta reboot it.
I just downloaded and installed the latest July 8th update today, and so far no issues. But I'll report back if any things fixed or not.
I had the same problem right after i got mine.. not a good video but was it like this? They replaced mine new one doesn't do it....
on youtube I posted a video of mine...samsung S7 edge youtube landscape video problem...( I cant post a link but you can search for it)
Wow. I thought I was the only one. Was watching a Facebook video. And made a loud hissing sound. I was scared

Sound issues - Cutting out

Hi guys,
I got a new S7 due to breaking the screen on my last one and I seem to be experiencing some strange issues with audio.
In pokemon go for example, sometimes the sound effects will be normal, other times only part of the sounds will play. YouTube seems to often play 5 seconds of a video with audio before it just cuts out.
I haven't been able to identify any consistency and if I click through random apps and go back to YouTube, sometimes the audio will be fine again.
Never had this issue before. Has anybody experienced this?
Cheers

I'm currently experiencing it with Google Play music, a notification says there was a problem with the playback. I think it might be something to do with the upscaler or the adapt sound if you have either enabled?

I don't think I've got either enabled.
Just tried a factory reset and fired up YouTube and it happened straight away. No sound.
Agh! So irritating.

I have the same exact issue after the last update 1 or 2 days ago. Personally I think it's because of the update. I didn't have the issue before it. Drives me absolute mad.
Ah, perhaps that's what it is. I hadn't picked up the ota on my other device.
I hope it's that at least. Would hate to have to go through the process of a replacement phone.
Edit: just as an update... I called Samsung today and after being passed around several different departments, and confirming troubleshooting steps, they've determined that the device may be faulty and I'm going to have to go through the replacement process. I don't know if this is just a bad timing in receiving the phone exactly when a bad update comes out of whether it's a faulty unit. I guess I'll find out by the end of next week when I receive the replacement!

Nexus 6P No Audio. (playback error on EVERY app)

why im writing this
i was so mad and so confused when this happened to me yet the fix was so easy. even xda didnt have a fix i only wish to help anyone with this issue.
what caused the issue and Information on the issue
so i got caught in the rain walking home drenched from the rain my Nexus in my pocket but i was only in the rain for 20 mins when i got home i noticed youtube wasn't working "a error occurred during playback" on every single video so i was like. wtf is my data not working. i loaded a webpage it worked just fine. so i was like hm. must be youtube ill wait. so i opened up Google Play Music to listen to some Pantera. to my surprise same issue. "the song you requested could not be played." now this is when i realized something was wrong because this song was stored on the hard-drive in "downloaded" mode. so i opened up Angry birds. no sound... so i thought.. werid. i wonder if the rain screwed up my speakers... but it wasnt even heavy rain. so than attempted to call google support. no. the call wouldn't go through. so i tried to call my sister. the phone app crashed. thats when i realized it had to be a software issue if it was hardware the videos and music would play but without sound. being told "a error occurred" . still on system UI made me know it was a software issue. so i restored the phone. still no fix. thats when i started to notice. the screen wouldn't rotate either so i installed a rotataion app to manually go back and forth from portrait and landscape. for days i used a bluetooth speaker.
the fix
turns out. the issue was sooooo simple. the mic was clogged.... i took a metal tool and used it clear it out. a video on youtube told me how to do it. and it was my last ditch effort i also took a q tip and did the same with the headphone jack and now the rotation and sound works
lolololololol
you fixed all your hardware and software problems by cleaning the mic?
oh god
Same issue please help
I am having the EXACT same issue you had with your Nexus 6p, I got mine wet in the rain for 2 minutes the other day And now have playback errors on EVERYTHING unless I'm connected to a Bluetooth device. I read your fix and tried to clean out there microphone generally but no luck. Any chance you could point me to the video you watched and or give me any further details on your process to fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

I also cleaned out the headphone jack. Try that. And o noticed you said " gently" I tried it gently and it didn't fix my issue that's why I resorted to a metal tool I think what happened was water dried on top of whatever is inside the mic hole. I was damn near ready to sell the phone for like $50. So I wasn't gentle about it at all I sort of like tried scratching around in there. I can link you the YouTube video but it won't really do any good . It's the only thing he did but if you want it hold on
Edit: the video won't show up in my YouTube history I can't link the exact video.
hello ,
I have the exact same problem like with my nexus 6p from about a month , is the mic you mean the one above the finger print sensor or there is another one ??
I'm having the exact same issue now as well with the exact same phone. My problem started because of a different reason though. My phone never got wet. I flashed the CM 14.1 Nethunter rom and was using it for about 4-5 days but then started having issues with Gapps so today I decided to restore the backup I made before I flashed Nethunter and this is when I started noticing problems. Upon first boot my fingerprint was recognized but my pattern lock wasn't, which is weird because I only ever use the same pattern. Booted into TWRP and removed the files containing the pattern so all is well there. It wasn't until I went to set an alarm that I noticed my sounds not working. Then had my girl call my phone; straight to voicemail. Tried a YouTube video; error occurred during playback on every video. This is definitely not as simple a fix as roughly jam something into the mic hole, but it's awesome that worked for OP. If anybody has any ideas for how to fix this or what what wrong I would hella appreciate some insight. Classes start tomorrow and I pretty much rely on my phone alarm lol.

Hey I think I figured this out. Some people found that power cycling your device multiple times fixes it which points to it being a software issue. I noticed that when I would try to play my music from Amazon Music it would automatically pause meaning that either an app was prioritizing the audio or some programming was blocking sound. I went into settings -> sound -> do not disturb -> automatic rules. From there I deleted all rules except for Events and the sound came back within a few minutes. There is a problem with do not disturb with my device so others may be having the same problem.
Hey thanks for the update! I'll give it a try!

Bluetooth stuttering? Low WiFi strength?

Anyone having stutter issues with bluetooth? Playing through my echo dot and just 10 feet away it's super choppy. Even from 3 feet I was having issues. Anyone have any ideas? I'm about to use it in my Kia soul (2012) tomorrow and already worried it won't work there. The audio issue right now is so bad it's not even usable. It chops up for a second every 10 or fifteen seconds.
Also, my WiFi signal strength is much lower than my nexus 6p. Anyone else have lower WiFi strength?
This happened to myself also... albeit intermittently. However it also happened more on my S7 with my car stereo. Usually skipping a song/waiting 10 seconds fixes it. I thought it was my phone, but now I'm not so sure. Just something I just learned to deal with when it happens. Any one find a fix?

I use poweramp. It has settings for buffer length and audio priority. I haven't really played with them much but it could solve your problem.

I don't think that will work with Spotify unfortunately.

Definitely a problem - there is a large (unhelpful) thread over on the Samsung support site too called "Galaxy S8 Bluetooth Connection" (I'm not allowed to post links here yet)
A moderator claimed it's been reported to Samsung but no updates on the status for 2 weeks from him now. Restarting, clearing cache, factory resetting seem to only temporarily help.

New moderator jumped on and blamed the problem on the other devices not being Bluetooth 5.0. So apparently the S8 is not backward compatible with EVERY SINGLE BLUETOOTH DEVICE EVER MADE. Fun!
I am getting bluetooth audio stuttering issues when the FitBit app is installed, and the FitBit battery drains incredibly quickly. When I uninstall the FitBit app everything is fine. All other devices work fine with FitBit, it's only the S8 that's having this weird issue. Any status on a fix???

Weird problems with nexus 6p

Hello.
My friend got a nexus 6p one year ago. One month ago he started to have problem. He was on stock rom
-First when he pressed the touch screen he heard small weird noises (hard to describe)
Then progressively :
-Speaker stopped working
-he could not play youtube video in you tube app : a weird error message (every time different) appeared. Gallery videos don't work as well
-But weirdly enough video played in the web browser including youtube videos, works, still without sound.
-He cannot make calls
-Jack plug doesn't works either, but he can use his Bluetooth headphones
We tried to install a custom rom (lineage os). We succeeded, but the above problem appeared again.
Then we flashed the factory image https://developers.google.com/android/images for nexus 6p. We also succeed but the above problem appeared again.
Thanks in advance for your help

The 6P has two speakers, and they wouldn't both fail at the same time. Sounds like he's damaged the phone somehow. The audio jack and speaker output both not working seem to back this up. I've seen the headphone jack part available separately, and there are guides available to replace it. Before flagging it as a hardware issue and opening the phone up, you want to make sure you wiped the phone completely by formatting the partitions (system, userdata, cache) and use the flash-all.bat included with the full Google image. There is a remote chance it is software related, but I doubt it.
You could always flash a custom kernel, use a kernel manager app to turn off the large core cpu and see if the problems go away. If they do its related to the build problem that causes the 6P to boot loop but those particular symptoms aren't familiar. It's still worth a try if flashing the stock image doesn't fix the problem.

Yes. You can always turn it back on but turning it off apparently fixes the permanent boot loop problem on the Nexus 6P. If the problems you are describing are related to the same build problem then turning it off might make them go away. Sometimes people's phones would start acting odd before going into the permanent bootloop. That phone could be on its way there.
this is purely a guess but the problem may be hardware related with the headphone jack. it could have a physical short somewhere. if thats the case the device may think a headphone jack is being used and wont play through speakers because its being told its plugged in. But wont play because of some physical short or an open.
