I'm not sure if anyone else knows this, but I read somewhere that if you change the wifi sleep policy to never, it actually SAVES battery.
I thought this was insane, but if you think about it it actually makes sense. It stops your phone from the constant switch to Edge and 3G... which in return saves your battery.
Usually I can lose up to 5% in 30 minutes by not even using my phone.
Now that I have a constant wifi connection I have only lost 2% in an hour and a half.
Assuming you're connected to a wifi network, yes.
Otherwise, no.

I'm not sure how that works when you're not connected to a network and the phone goes into sleep...
I use Y5 which uses cell towers to remember where I am able to receive wifi. If I leave a remembered spot it will turn off the radio for me. When I come back it will automatically turn it back on and reconnect.

Hmmmm
Wouldn't the phone continue to have it's cellular Edge/3g connection going while you have the WiFi on?
Whenever I have WiFi on in addition to 3g I always see, under battery usage, wifi at about 2-3% and Cellular signal at 5-6%
Seem's like when you have WiFi on as well as Data that both are draining the battery...
The phone turns off 3g radio when you have a data connection.

Are you sure about that? I'm connected to WiFi on my phone and the Status screen under About Phone still stays UMTS rather than EDGE.

UMTS is just the 3g network, that doesnt mean data. the 3G network is used for voice calls too.
so yes, when the phone is connected to wifi, the cellular data connection is terminated. always been like this.
and yes i've seen a huge battery increase with wifi set to NEVER sleep policy.
It will stop hop between 2G/3G even if you're not using the data. You'd have to force it to 2G only and then enable wifi to take advantage of this the most.
I second those findings. When at home, use no sleep policy, and going out - turn off wifi manually. Works very well.
My "always on while sleep" doesn't work.. it opt's out anyway..
Edit: Installed an app called Wifi Fixer. And my connection hold up now while sleeping. nice....!!!
Where do I find this sleep-setting?
Not looking for a flame because I'm still learning.
if you have juicedender and keep the wifi setting on what it is when your phone sleeps the phone will turn off wifi and juicedefender will turn of 2g/3g correct? If this is true then you can save double the battery by installing defender (free); right?

Go into Wi-Fi settings.. Hit Options (the capacitive button you know...)
Ha! I've had my N1 for two months now and didn't realize there was more Wifi options if you click on the options button to the left of the home button. I wish they would add some sort of indicator that there's more to do if you click on that button. I've run into this soooo many times. It's kind of nice, though, because I keep finding goodies even months after buying the phone lol.
Yes it's often a mystery - it would be cool if it was possible for the capacitive menu button be lit only when there are additional options.

I tried that on a hottie standing in line for coffee. I got slapped.
I've tried setting the wifi sleep policy on my phone (T-Mobile MyTouch Slide) to "never sleep," but I'm not sure it's helping. When I turn on wifi for a little while (say, an hour or two) and then look at the battery usage screen I see that wifi uses a pretty significant chunk of the battery, maybe 10% or so, higher if I leave it on for longer. This is even if I'm not using the connection much, sometimes I'll turn it on to do a little light browsing and then put the phone away for an hour and then check to see how much power the wifi connection ate. Today I turned on wifi for maybe 10 minutes to download a couple app updates and turned it off right afterward. The phone has been only off the charger for 3 hours, but wifi accounts for 8% of the battery drain (the rest is idle: 16%, standby: 31%, and display: 45%).
On the other hand if I stick to 3G data I don't feel like I see as much of a hit on the battery (though it's harder to tell how much of "standby" is going to 3G data).
I understand in theory that connecting to a wifi access point within the building should require less power than connecting to a cell tower a mile away, but I also disable "always-on mobile data" so hopefully I'm not maintaining a 3G data connection all the time either.
Those of you who leave the wifi connection on all the time and are reporting better battery life than with 3G data, how much of your battery do you see going to wifi in the battery usage screen?
Well for me when I leave WiFi set to never, I lost 11% in 12 hours. On 3g I lose way more in that same period.
Got my GS2 on Friday. Charged it when I got home to full before turning it on for the first time.
Getting a bit less than 10hrs of battery life, which isn't too bad, but use hasn't been strenuous, so not thrilled.
I looked at the battery usage and WiFi Sharing has been chewing through my battery. When I was first setting up my phone I configured it, as I do use, but haven't since turned it on, or connected to it from my laptop.
When I started writing this new thread I see there is another thread on the Optimus 2x doing the same thing. Is this a bug in Android with Dual Core CPUs?
Wifi Sharing (mobile hotspot) is a battery hog on any Android device. Thats just the reality of a good feature.
Wifi sharing is a mega power-hog, as it is essentially making a base-station from your phone. So a lot of power is used as the wifi will be in use fairly heavily.
Same on every device. Hero used to get quite warm using wifi tether.
That's surprisingly good battery life for leaving wifi sharing on.. a 10 hour wifi hotspot from a phone is about the best you can get. Not even sure if those portable wifi routers get that kind of battery life.
Yes, I know it can use a huge amount of battery. But I haven't been using it. I configured it (ie, put in my WPA key, the same one I had on my Nexus One) so I could use it, but then turned it off.
I shutdown my phone last night (took out SD card to copy a bunch of music over quickly). Since I turned the phone back on, I haven't even been into the wifi sharing menu and it's used 15% of the battery.
I will try removing the config and see if it crops up again in the list tomorrow.
Cheers, Tim.
I also have this, but do not use the feature, nor do I start it, but it still keeps appearing.
Any advice?

It sounds like you might have left it enabled - mine is disabled and does not use up any battery.

This is the problem. Wifi sharing is off. I configured it, but it is off. I 'forced exited' it from from the battery usage menu after I saw it, but at some point it started again.

Force exit won't do anything, it will just start up again. Make sure the checkbox is disabled. If it is disabled, try enable it and then disable it.
Can't seem to replicate it here - when I disable the checkbox it turns off.
The same thing happened to me. I configured the sharing never turned it on and it was killing my battery. I checked a million times that sharing was not active but it made no difference the service was always running. Killing the service didn't work it kept coming back. I did a full hard reset and haven't setup sharing since and it has yet to be an issue.
Kinda sucks as I need this feature. This did not happen in my atrix which is a dual core phone aswell.

Yeah, I will keep an eye on it tomorrow. I wonder if it is a conflict between Kies and wifi sharing.
Thanks for all the replies. Definitely looks like I'm not the only one who has seen it.

Yep, I think you're right. I never enabled wifi sharing either, but I have used Kies Air a few times, and then seen Wifi Sharing appear in the Battery Usage stats.
same here set it up and not using it but it is sucking up battery .. this is a big problem. this phone isnot ready yet for my daily driver.. think i am going back to my sgs
i was getting 10% usage in about 2 hours.. i normaly get 3-5 % overnight with my sgs
anyway i have read a few threads and froze (makes them unruneable /using titanium backup .
software update
wifi sharing
and wifi sharing manager
i can always re-enable them if i want to tether
i will keep you informed on how this effects battery
i also used autostarts to disable accuweather which kept starting up.. i dont use any weather widgets other that beautiful weather which has its own
Sitting on 7% battery now. Been going all day, 10.5hrs, and NO Wifi sharing in the battery usage. Didn't turn Wifi tethering on at all today.
This morning it happened again ... But unlike yesterday, instead of killing the process I tried to enable and disable wifi hotspot and the process has finished eating cpu and battery!
I have the same problem, both Wi-fi sharing and Wi-fi sharing manager appear in my 'running services' and are consuming a lot of battery power.
I have not enabled wifi tethering, I've tried enabling and disabling, but this has not fixed the problem. I have used Kies air before, but have made sure that this is not running too.
I can force stop wi-fi sharing and wi-fi sharing manager, but they will re-appear as soon as you re-enable wi-fi.
Any idea what this is? or how to stop it?
I've noticed my Transformer's battery being drained when closed (and docked), and every time I change the wifi disconnect policy to "When screen turns off", as soon as I exit the settings it goes back to never. Does anybody know how to keep it at "When screen turns off", or why it changes back (maybe an app)? If it is an app, I would love to see an update from Asus that established a hierarchy where user settings overruled apps.

It seems to be a bug. I have a similar problem. Though set to "never switch off WiFi" the connection is lost, when the screen is off for several minutes. Switching airplane mode on and off reconnects WiFi afterwards.
BTW, I use the TF without dock.
might not be the best sollution as it costs money, but I use the app "tasker"
I have set a rule, that 5min after the screen has turned off it turns WLAN and synchronisation off.
As soon as I have unlocked it it turns these back on.
Maybe the App JuiceDefender can do the same?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
I can attest to juice defender working. Before I was getting a day idling, now I'm getting 2.5 days.
This app has made my battery last 4-5 days instead of 2. It is called Auto Airplane Mode by DON. It does just that, automatically enables airplane mode when the screen turns off. Most battery drain occurs while in "standby." This app shuts all connections off and saves a big chunk of battery.
I am sure it will work for your phone too, but since you receive calls on a phone it would kinda defeat the purpose.
Here is a link to the android market.

The screen accounts for most battery usage but some still occurs when the screen is off due to apps trying to sync.

In theory this is a helpful app for those who aren't looking to sync devices during these intervals of having the screen off.
But I think in the case of the WiFi only Xoom this isnt necessary because WiFi turns off during screen off anyway right?
And on 3G it may prove to be more helpful because of sync. But the number one killer of battery on a tablet should be the display.
Anyway, good call for the app. Thanks for sharing with the community.
I dunno I don't experience that much battery drain, I been getting around 4 days with causal use (wifi model)
...and why would you want to be in air plane mode when the screen turns off on your phone?? You wont be able to receive phone calls or messages. mind as well turn off the phone at that point lol
But at least we have no Amoled-display. Amoled is the most consuming type of display.

No, you have a choice and HC3.2 has a bug that can cause random reboots unless wifi sleep policy is set to never. Don't know how this would affect that issue.
In moray rom it is one touch on/off(notification area)
so,while watching movies or listening songs one can turn off the wi-fi.

I worded that wrong. Obviously, your battery will drain more WHEN YOU ARE USING IT and the screen is on.
For many people, myself included, the "standby" battery loss/drain is excessive. This app helps A TON with that.
Mike the majority of understand you what you mean.
Some tablets spend most of their time and energy "waiting" to be used.

I can't complain too much about my battery life. My Wifi is always on 24/7 even when the screen is off or I am not using it. I like to be notified at all times, ya know. My CPU speed is way underclocked with the screen off so I get a killer standby time regardless. I don't even notice any kind of battery drain at all really with my Wifi always on, but a good tip nonetheless.
Underclocking is an amazing way to save battery life when you are not using it, or even when you are using it. For root users only, of course. If one were to be rooted that is what I would reccommend the most for someone looking to save battery life. Underclocking+undervolting makes for a power saving beast. Even more so than just disabling all connections.
But, combine auto airplane mode/Wifi screen off and underclocking+undervolting, and you have the ultimate power saver. If you don't need to get emails or notifications of any type this would be perfect for you considering the fact that all connections would be disabled.
This is very annoying, I have spent the whole morning trying to find a solution for this issue. The battery runs out already fast as it is, and now the phone is not
Battery drained about 20% at night by itself. Currently draining about 1-2% per 5 minutes when idle. What do I do? I have looked on various different threads for a solution, but did not find anything to fix this issue.
How do I fix this?
Thanks, in advance.
Also some details.
I had my phone at home, I prefer the phone to use WiFi networks when syncing and updating, but to have phone turn them automatically off when not using them, that is when the phone is locked and not syncing and updating anything. But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

For me, it was the last Google Maps update. Try to disable "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings on Google Settings app(the one with the green icon). I had around 25% drain over night and half of it came from this.
Try it and see if this can help you.
:fingers-crossed:
Like above say, disable location, especially if you keep wifi on.
Leaving wifi on while sleeping itself is not good for our health anyway, so if you have data switch to 2G, its at least enough to keep internet messages coming while saving battery. And if its wifi wise, apply pm.sleep_mode=1 in your build.prop. AND, scroll up a little, wifi_supplicant_can_interval(something like that, from its SHOULD BE 15 change to 300-600).
Disable unused apps and use greenify.

Thank you for the answer, but sadly it didn't seem to do it. My WiFi is still always on, even though I have it set to turn off when phone is sleeping at WiFi advanced settings.
Although the phone entered deep sleep mode when I manually turned WiFi off, but I'm not sure if that was the case.

I understand, but I forgot to do so, I actually have an app that turns on air plane mode at certain time. But that still doesn't fix the issue that the phone doesn't enter sleep mode with WiFi on and doesn't turn it off, even though it's set to do so.
Also I did not quite understand what you were telling me there, as I got the phone last week and it's my first android phone. The app you suggested could cut it, but that means that whenever there will be an auto check for news sequence I will be downloading it with mobile data? Is there an app that could cause this?
I was about to update on this, but I just got notification about 4.3 update.
I will update this post, if this problem still exists.
UPDATE : Of course, still the problem persists, Phone goes to sleep when I have Wi-Fi turned off. But when on, even though I have it set to turn off during sleep mode, it keeps the phone wake and drains the battery.

I had left my phone this night with Wi-Fi off, but mobile data and 3G was on, Lost 7% in 7Hours from 47%. Does this seem okay, or a little bit too much? Unfortunately this is normal, the battery life is not the best feature of nexus 4. How many screen on time hours do you get averagely?
This fixed the Wifi always on issue for me.
Turn WiFi on: Settings, WiFi, Menu (3 dots upper right hand corner), advanced, uncheck scanning always on.
Hope this helps.
