Files disappearing? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I did a search, but it yielded no results, so I'll ask it here... I use file Explorer and every now and again it will tell me in the status bar that I'm using this much space on the internal memory and ask to delete recently downloaded files or something to that effect. I tell it no and go on with my day. Today I realised that 7gb have mysteriously gone missing from my download folder inside file Explorer. I have no idea what happened to them. I'm currently running PureNexus with elimentalX kernel. Has anybody else experienced this? I'm wondering if this could be rom, file Explorer, or download manager related. Thanks in advance...

I am having the exact same damn problem as you. and I cannot copy it out of my phone, because it cannot be found in my phone. lol wtf
PS I am on Android N, and this has happened to me multiple times in the past.

Same thing with me. Stock ROM, rooted.
It's weird, the files can be found on the phone but not while trying to transfer files to PC.

There was a known bug since Android I-don't-know where whenever there is a new folder/file created, commonly in the Downloads folder, Java wasn't reloading that folder so it was stuck to the last time the folder was reloaded, long story-short, it stays as it is until you reload the code.
Try clearing Media Storage cache and then reboot. That got mine fixed.

[Problem] No "sdcard", only "root" folder :(

Hello,
it's a little bit difficult to explain my problem. it started few days ago when my 7.7 didn't turn on.
Then i read about the trick to press the power button longer than 10 seconds and it really worked. First I was glad but then i found out, that my picture gallery and my mp3 player was empty!
First I thought that everything was deleted, but that wasn't true. The files are still there. In fact it seems that the system has changed the "/sdcard" area to "/root". So the apps can't find the files.
I uploaded a file where you can see what i mean. On my Smartphone is also a "/sdcard" instead of the "root".
My 7.7 is rooted, no other modifications have been made...
Who can help me to solve this problem without doing a reset to factory setting..
That's just how the stock file browser shows it, it's not actually mounted at /root.
If the gallery and music player are empty you could try giving it a little time for the media scanner to add your media. If it doesn't show up, then wipe the data of the media storage app and restart your tab. You may have to restart it again after it has built its database to get everything working properly.
i wiped the data, didn't work
what if the internal storage is really mounted as /root now? what can i do to change it?
because the empty gallery and mp3player aren't the only problems now. if i take a picture, i cannot use the preview to look at it. it says "no elements" then. so i think its a problem more deep in the system...
i really dont understand how this could happen, i just turned the tab on..
If you have ES File Explorer, it should show that same "root" folder as actually being the internal "sdcard" folder. I don't think it has anything to do with actually being rooted, it is just how the built in File Manager lists the folder.
Another option, perhaps Fix Permissions in Recovery may fix your issues.
can i find a tutorial to fix permission in recovery mode?

***For People Suffering with Gallery/Music Issues***

If you're having trouble with missing photos/music in CM9/10 just lately... here is what I did and it seemed to resolve the issues I was having
It seems that the Rom Manager update is causing the issue by putting a bad .nomedia file on the sdcard.
How I solved it
1. Get a file explorer and go to the root of both sdcards and see if there is a .nomedia file there and delete it
2. Then go to /android/data on both sdcards and see if there is one there and if so delete those too
3. Then go to Settings and then Apps and uninstall the updates to Rom Manager (we can't uninstall Rom Manager as it comes preinstalled in CM9/10)
4. Whilst in Apps go to all apps and clear data in Media Storage (this will also change your ringtones back to default)
5. Reboot phone
6. Once rebooted you will notice that if you go to gallery you will have no pics at all, just give it a few minutes or maybe longer depending on how many pictures/music you have on your phone and they should reappear after a while. Mine did....
This has worked for me twice now  Let me know if it works for you....
Wow, this is exactly what I am trying so hard looking for the solution for days! All my galleries and music players was messing up, and now it solved thank to you!
Greatly appreciated
istpet elizabeth
thanx alot.... i guess .nomedia was the main problem
Thanks a lot for this fix. Got my camera pictures back but not the pictures from the apps and other music and videos.
Sent from my GT-N7000
thanks for the solution.

Do you have your file explorer configured to show hidden files?

[Q] Permissions

Hi there, sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find too much about the problem. I am also new with this for the most part.
The other day I restored my N7 from PA back to stock to rule out a YouTube buffering problem (and turns out that didn't work, still same issue regardless). I decided to go back to PA 2.54 and while everything works, I can't save images from chrome into the downloads folder nor can I delete folders.
Do I have to reroot again? Assuming yes but if there are additional processes I have to go through please let me know.
Also, is there any fix available for my youtube problem? Thanks in advance.
Okay, so I rerooted and I was able to save the image I wanted finally. However, I still cannot delete files, specifically in the sdcard/ folder. There is a folder called "downloadttt" (I renamed it this purposely for testing purposes). There is one file in there (PA 2.54.zip) and it refuses to delete, same as the "downloadttt" folder.

[Q] Weird PC/MAC file sync/transfer issue

First, LOVE the "similar thread" search results, pure awesomeness. Sadly, they didn't have the answer or question related to the problem I'm seeing.
Regardless of whether I'm on my PC laptop or MacBook, the files I see in windows explorer/android file transfer aren't the same as what's on the device.
For example, I wiped my titanium backup folder to create fresh backups. After deleting all the files I used Root Explorer to go in and verify that the TitaniumBackup folder in "/sdcard/" was empty, and it was.
Plug my phone into both the PC/Mac, it's still showing files in that folder from before I deleted them. Same with my text/sms backup, I use rerwares mybackuppro and it saves everything as zip files. Saved everything, went into the folder in we/aft, didn't show the zip I just created, showed zips from the previous days.
Now, if I wait like a day or so, and then go back into the phone, it's like it finds them then, like what I'm seeing on the phone isn't up to date or something with what I see on computers (this makes me miss external SD cards, very very badly).
Anyone else notice this? Happening with both N4's I have right now (one's a replacement, going back). Very frustrating in trying to transfer all of my info over but can't because it's not finding my backups that I just created.
Thanks for your time.

obb folder showing as a file, can't write / change permissions

Hi all,
I can't seem to get my obb folder to behave. After installing anything which makes a file inside it, the folder changes to a file inside any file manager including with root access.
In twrp it shows as a normal folder and can be deleted or edited, but once back in android, it reverts to this weird uneditable file...
Any clues? I can't (or rather won't) format internal storage as I don't have a micro SD and currently have lots of files in my root folder which I need in case of emergency (i.e. my twrp backups and some downloaded . zip files).
Any help would be appreciated! It's not an emergency I'm just trying to get a game working. Oh also, if it helps, when I try to download the game after folder has gone weird, play store gets to 99% then fails with error 0 every time.

You simply need to delete the obb folder from TWRP file manager.
If no success, connect your phone to pc and delete ithe folder from there. (or use some force delete software for your platform)

Hi,
I'm also facing same issue, did you find any solution ?
Please help me too..
Don't know if this means anything but if I go into file manager after a reboot it's fine for a minute or two then goes back to being weird. Can't put my finger on what causes it. I've uninstalled magisk, clean flashed my ROM, only thing left to do is format internal storage but can't do that until I get an SD card for my ROM files and backups to go on.

I also had the same issue with pixel experience rom. My Suggestion is to install a nougat based custom rom until someone finds a solution for that.

Thanks but that's not really a solution I want when it worked fine on previous builds.
Wow... You'll never guess...the issue is present in nougat ROMs too...
*facepalm*
i also faced the above problem in almost every oreo rom. But in the below rom it is normal.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/development/rom-cosmic-os-v3-1-universe-t3730547. i am using this rom as daily driver.
Hi All,
I deleted obb folder from going into root >> data >> media >> obb
Choose file manager like es file explorer or Aroma file manager.
But this is temporary solution not permanent after some time same issue will occur again.
Kindly follow this thread to solve obb data lost on Oreo custom Rom.

Thank you so much!! I don't have an SD card at the moment, however, but happy to know a solution. Does anyone know the cause??
Is there a solution for this without SD card??
EDIT: I've noticed something. The issue described in this thread seems only to happen after connecting to WiFi and downloading apps from the play store. It doesn't seem to happen before I will do that. Hope it helps.

My theory says obb folder turns into file cause system link from data/media/obb should be revoked but I'm not smart enough to know how to create system links
I noticed that when I install the pubg mobile game manually I do not lose the obb folder, just like the friend mentioned above only occurs when the game is installed directly from the play store
For those who don't have rooted devices use this method until we get a fix
