Our Project Fi Experience coming from Verizon - Nexus 5X General

Just thought I'd pass some info on about my experiences to help people decide whether or not to "take the leap".
My wife and I have been on Fi for about 3 weeks and I will breakdown our experiences...FWIW we have been long time Verizon users (since 2009).
Dollars
Fi - We have 1 GB of data each with the 5X (32GB) and 6P (64GB) payments spread out for the 2 year financing. My bill after taxes - $56.95, hers - $51.95 for a total of $108.90.
Verizon - We had the 3 GB Verizon plan (more on this later) with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4 payments spread out over 2 years. Total after taxes and with 15% corporate discount - $140.12
Savings = $31.22/month
Usage
Me - with 10 days remaining I have used only 114MB of data
Her - with 11 days remaining she has used only 28 MB of data
So we are on track to get ~$17 put towards our next bill. Seeing as how our only other alternative on Verizon was 1 GB shared (which would not have been enough according to the usage history) and would only be about $5 cheaper makes me wonder how much background data was being sent on Verizon...
Savings - ~$17/month
Service in Lexington, KY
So far service has been fine. I actually have better service where I work as I am able to use wifi calling. The transition from wifi to cellular has also been good and while I can notice it, I haven't dropped a call. The only complaint I receive is from my father who lives in the boonies saying that he gets a busy signal when calling and that it may take him a couple of tries to get through. He is the only person I've heard this from and he is on Verizon for his home phone. I actually anticipate having issues when traveling, but since we don't travel much I'm not too concerned because even when traveling through West Virginia Verizon didn't have complete coverage.
Phones
6P - coming from the G4 I miss nothing. The screen and build quality of the 6P and responsiveness and battery life of Marshmallow are amazing. My G4 wouldn't last past mid afternoon due to the inability to find service where I work. I routinely have 40% battery life on the 6P when I go to bed at 11PM and throw it on the charger. Camera options are limited with the Google camera app as opposed to the G4, but I don't miss any extras as I just use the camera on auto for the most part. Besides some of the missing features are available on other available camera apps. The size of the 6P does take a little to get used to and 1 handed operation is difficult, but I don't mind.
5x - The S6 definitely has a better build quality and better screen than the 5x. Fortunately, my wife doesn't seem to mind and although the 5X is a little bigger she likes the added weight savings. She does seem to like the camera on the S6 better, but the cost savings over time more than makes up for that in her eyes. Her battery life was good on the S6 and she never had a complaint, but the 5x with Marshmallow is better.
Bonus!
Since the 32GB 5X was available this past weekend (Black Friday - Cyber Monday) for $349 and since we purchased the 5X within the window we are getting an $80 credit on the phone.
Savings - ~$3.33 per month
Total savings on Fi - ~$51.00/month = $1224 for the 2 years should we decide to keep the phones that long. This coupled with having no bloat and always having the latest OS and security patches are no brainers to us.

Thanks for sharing! I just ditched VZW after 10 years with them for Fi. I should get the 5x soon and will report back about my experience here in Southern California.
I expect similar savings but your math is a little off. You will save a whopping $1224 over 2 years!
Makes me sick to think how much money I threw at Verizon...

Thanks for posting. My biggest question is how did you manage to get the $80 credit. I called up google and they wouldn't budget. Made me return the phone and get a new one.
FWIW - I also came from a Verizon S6 and agree with your wife about the camera. The 5X camera seems really slow in comparison.
I went to AT&T instead of Fi, but makes me think about going to Fi. Will have to consider it.

You are correct, I must've only multiplied by a year!

I got a hold of Project Fi support via chat and the rep stated that since I ordered the phone after November 9th (November 10th to be exact) that I will be getting the credit. Did you perhaps order before that?

I was interested in Project Fi until I found out that the two networks it uses are T-Mobile and Sprint. In my area T-Mobile has pretty weak coverage and Sprint is way worse. If Google had partnered with either Verizon or AT&T(preferably both) then I'd probably sign up but not with T-Mobile and Sprint.

No. Didn't order before that...actually ordered about a week after that. But I bought directly from Google without Project Fi (put my AT&T sim in). I called Google support, and they told me the only way was to return the old phone and buy a new one. How annoying.

I had Project Fi and it works great in the city, but I need rural Arizona coverage, which Verizon serves well.

Have to add project fi international has been horrible. Compared to my s6 using the same networks the fi will rarely give me data and doesn't have the native international sms like it implies.

I am tempted to try it since I always use Nexus phones but I recently switched from Sprint to T-mobile and do not miss the speeds I would get on Sprint which is what it seems I'd be on a lot of the time with Fi.

I'm also coming from Verizon to Fi. I'm in northern Calif., in a moderately rural area. So far, it has been great. In my area, signal strength has been generally better than VZ. I love the simplicity of the service, it's everything that Verizon isn't. I also love the wifi call integration. It makes my experience at home so much better. I haven't yet been able to test handoff between wifi and cellular while on a call.

I tried project Fi and it ended up costing me more money and coverage was not as good. I'm happy that I was able to buy the Nexus 5x for $250 through the Fi promotion. So that is awesome, but my data use is consistently between 3 and 4GB/month. On Fi that cost is about $50-$60/month. I had been using StraightTalk at $42.50/month (buying a 180 day card for $255). Coverage was not as good on Fi either. Back to Straighttalk for me. I get to keep the N5x at the $250 cost.

I have been on Fi for 6 months now and I love it. Coverage in Southern California is great, never even notice when it switches carriers. I cut my VZW bill in half with this.
International coverage is great too. Recently spent time in Denmark and Germany. Just turned the phone on, got a text message with the local rates (both in Denmark and Germany data was the same as here: $10/GB, calls were 20c/min) which are very reasonable. In Germany I spent most of the time in a rural area. Still, coverage and data speed were more than adequate. I used to have a second phone for Europe, using some local cheapo provider. Absolutely love that I can now use my Nexus wherever I am.

I've been on Fi for a little over 3 months, and been satisfied, particularly with the cost savings. I'm coming from Tmobile so "gained" the Sprint coverage. Though in my area in Southern California, Tmobile had built out coverage the last few years and was very good. There've been only 2 times when my 5X switched to Sprint, and that was one lounge in the airport where I know the Tmobile signal was almost non-existent, and the other time in a subway (transit, not the sandwich shop.) I'm using the Signal Spy app which logs network history. In both cases, the Sprint signal was weak, but there. I already had wifi calling through Tmobile, but the hangouts syncing messages across devices and being able to text and call from my "cell" number from my computer or tablet is great.
I also have a Fi data sim in my Note 4. Which with the Hangouts dialer, does nearly everything the 5X does, other than being able to call and text over the cell network, and only uses the Tmobile network. But I can use hangouts to call and text over the data connection. Next time I travel internationally, I'll probably take that phone with the data SIM and just leave the 5x at home.
The reason I'm saving money is I'm almost always near wifi, so average only maybe 300MB per month of data, going back years. Plus the taxes on my $40 Tmobile plan were over $7, but are a bit more than $3 on Fi since it seems to be based on the $20 voice and text. So I've paid about $26 average over the 3 bills since starting, and that included international data usage which was cheaper than my historical practice of using a local SIM.
The worst part about Fi, has actually been the 5X. It is a mid tier phone, and I've never been a fan of stock Android. As an example, until maybe the start of May, to enter an event in the calendar, I couldn't just type "meeting 9am" and have it add to the calendar. The time had to be entered separately in the time section below. They just fixed that. Also there's no way to select a certain group of contacts to show, like TW has so my entire contact list is on the phone and I have to search versus just being able to scroll through a reasonably short list like on TW. Touchwiz also has the alphabet down the side so I can jump to a certain letter. Also, at just 1/2 wider and 1/2 longer, the Note 4 gets a lot more out of the screen. Much easier to read things on it.
Plus Google seems to screw around with the Fi app or OS too much. A January security update introduced a problem where mobile data could not be turned off by many users. I had this problem. Sometimes it would shut off, and sometimes not. Took until this month for it to be fixed. The voice quality is also not so great. It works, but I tried hangouts dialer on my Note 4, and the quality of the call was much better, as in normal clarity. Versus calls with noticeable noise on the 5X over cell or wifi. There's rumored to be a fix for that rolling out soon. So they do work on improving things. But I would like to buy a flagship phone to use with it.

My wife and I just finished our first month of Project Fi. We had come from Sprint after 15yrs, with three lines at $195/mo for ****ty coverage while paying for two $600 Galaxy S5s over 2 yrs. I dropped a line (daughter is 19 and has a job*) and straight out bought two 5x's for $200 each and 1G of data each for $30/mo. I am not disappointed one bit. I'm an appliance tech and I use maps for my routing and chrome for parts and/or error code lookup and still came in under my 1G limit. The T-Mobile coverage in my area (Tidewater Virginia) is a lot better than my old Sprint coverage. I rarely see the 4G Sprint icon and was VERY surprised by how often I see the wifi icon through out the day.
*Daughter also went on Project Fi, paid for her 5x up front and 2G data /mo.

Weird. My friend used his 5x on Fi in Germany last month and had no problems at all using data or sms.

Fi just added US Cellular as well, so if you are in one of their 23 states rural coverage will be significantly better. 3-4GB is too much data for Fi compared to other carriers, you should look at adjusting your ways when on Fi, like only updating apps on WiFi, pre-download music, wait a few minutes to check social media until you get to a spot with WiFi, etc.

[CLOSED/G2] A few more days to decide if i keep Sprint EVO or go with TMo G2

(I posted this over at the TMo forum, but figured I might get some more suggestions/help here).
I have the Sprint EVO on the everything plan and it gives me 450 minutes to any landing. All cell to cell calls are included. I pay $80/month and that includes all SMS, data and navigation.
I have a few days before my 30 days are up to decide if I stick with it or go with something else.
I have never had a CDMA phone before. My only concern is if I trash/drop the phone it my kids drop it in the toilet, then I have to purchase another CDMA unit. If I go with TMo, and I trash a phone, I can put the SIM in any of my unlocked GSM phones. I've always used ATT but now am considering the new G2 on TMo.
Would appreciate any advice/suggestions.
Do I keep the EVO and the pretty decent plan, or go to TMo before my window of return closes for two years?
My needs are not huge, but father-in-law has very kindly agreed to pay the monthly bill, so that is a big help.
I do surf the net a fair bit (Facebook, few blogs, search for directions, phone numbers etc, but not excessive.
Talk: just the normal calls to family (i'll be home at 6pm, can you pick up milk etc.) and then the odd 20+ minute call to a friend every now and again. My biggest thing with regards to calling (landlines, businesses or other cellphones) is I don't want to have to look at a clock and wonder if I can call now or wait ½ an hour until a certain time of the day or be concerned what network they are on — just want to be able to pick up the phone and call whenever I need to, as I don't have a landline.
Used to be with ATT, but want a change. ATT often cripples their phones by barring features (e.g. on wife's ATT Samsung Captivate, you can't install non-market APKs because the Unknown Sources checkbox option has been removed).
So far, my experience with the EVO and Sprint has been decent. EVO battery isn't exactly stellar.
I have thoroughly enjoyed switching to an Android phone and want to stay.
PS - In San Diego area if that will help regarding coverage
I have the G2 and could not be happier. It is an amazing phone. and will be MUCH faster than your Evo according to the benchmarks that I have seen.
T-Mobile's rates are roughly comparable to Sprint's. I pay $80/month for 500 minutes and unlimited data and texting. T-Mobile doesn't generally have a bunch of extra hidden fees, so there is no charge for things like Navigation, you just use Google Navigation. The only exception to that will likely be tethering, but if you root your phone you should be able to get around that (soon at least).
The only minor caveat I would include in my recommendation is that I would check on the status of the HSPA+ roll-out in your area. San Diego should be planned, if not supported already, but That may be a deciding factor.
Go with the G2..!
I wish my father in law was that nice. Mine used to threaten to shoot me, hahahaha! Not really but he hated my guts once upon a time. I was a wild child 10 years ago. Wow, I feel old now... 30 next year, yuk! He likes me now. We eventually realized we were both assholes and ***** about stuff a lot togther. Hahahaha! Anyways, Check your coverage maps well as suggested. The plans/rates are close, etc. Sprint has a little bit better coverage generally so check your work/home route, city in general, and even vacation spots. Think of everything you could possibly plan. The coverage is not that bad but I get carried away sometimes. In general, though... its a bit better than the evo. Much nicer build quality... faster chips, etc. You'll enjoy it! And save Pops a few dollars too.
If customer service is important to you, T-Mobile has been ranked #1 by JD Powers for a while now while Sprint usually comes in 3rd or 4th.

Looking to Switch from Fascinate (Verizon) to Nexus S (Sprint)

Nexus S is free today at BB. I bought the Verizon Fascinate back in October, I was already looking into switching over to Sprint. I just want to get some opinions before I make the jump since it is really split second decision and if I leave Verizon and want to go back I say goodbye to unlimited data. Pricing is about the same as my plan goes. It will cost me about $175ish to cancel my Verizon plan, I should recoup a majority of it when I sell my Fascinate though.
I have no real issues with my phone. I have it rooted and it works great. No major issues with Verizon either and I have had em forever. I just don't really like the direction they are headed as far as tiered data plans/early upgrades/bloated phones etc. Plus I like that I can port my GV# to Sprint
Should I jump on today's deal and jump thru hoops to cancel my contract and sell my old phone. OR should I wait out my contract longer for a better upgrade later in my contract?
Any opinions appreciated, I'm stopping by Best Buy after work in about an hour and want to be set on a decision. Thanks.
Not sure what to advise but sprint will give you $150 just to switch to them so you can buy your way out from a contract.
I've been with sprint for 10 years now. I'm glad I did.

bit late now but I hear a lot of issues with signal and battery with the Nexus S 4G. my Tmobile Nexus S is perfect, however.
I got my nexus last week and the reception is perfect, meaning that I haven't had one drop call whatsoever. I don't go by the signal bars all the time. As long as I can make and receive calls, I'm good. And that's the area the Nexus hasn't failed in, at least with me. My cousin even went out and bought one Sunday from BB this past Sunday and he's very happy with it.
As far as Sprint, they're the best cellphone provider that we (wife and I) has used. Their Reps are always helpful when we call in for something. However, sometimes we get that one that acts like they don't know what they're doing. The plans are nice and affordable...and it's unlimited.

Worth it to sign up on T-Mobile for the Nexus 4 ?

Just called a few T-Mobile stores around Chicago, they all have Nexus 4 in stock. Low quantities like 5 at each stores I called, but at least they are stocking them now. Last month when I called, none of them had it.
I bet the carriers took up the supply for now, and we won't see them back on the Play Store until February / March is my guess.
I am tempted to go to T-Mobile now, they said can have two phones on full unlimited family plan for like $120. Right now, I am on Straight Talk, pay $97 for two numbers. Is it worth the extra $20 to go T-Mobile, on their full network ? Only beef I have with Straight Talk, is slow network, I am on the ATT SIM, and it seems pretty darn slow, the last couple of months, with my international One X, and group texting barely works, I can only send single texts, but when I do group messages of 2 - 3 people at same time, takes forever to go through, sometimes never goes.
I was going to hold out for the Play Store to get back in stock, and use on Straight Talk, but so far, the few months on ST, I think it's ok, but not the best network speeds, and some spotty areas once in awhile. T-Mobile will sell the Nexus 4 on contract for $199ea.
Opinion ???
Why not get a T-mobile SIM for Straight Talk?
I'm in the same boat, I had 2 nexus phones both are gone now. Returned/sold, I want one for myself and T-Mobile in my area has them, they want 250 on contract with a 50 rebate or 150 plus 20 a month with a different plan. Obviously I'll be stuck in a contract and buying the phone outright is not an option because they want $550.
I am thinking of signing up, checking out the service in my area. If the service is good then keep it, if it sucks then I return it within the 14 days.
well $20 more per month will get you unlimited HSPA+ if your area offers it... and if it does, your down speed should be at least 8mb/sec
Thanks for the replies

I think its worth it.. I was on Solavei... And I was getting alright speeds but nothing that great I say roughly 6-8 downloaded so I decided to try T-Mobile's Family value plan. I bought me and my fiancé Nexus 4s for Google Play store by the way. But as soon as I got on T-Mobile's network my download speeds shot up quite a bit I came from 6-8 Mbps to 23 mbps. Keep in mind the uploaded was always the same with both providers but I found it weird that Solavei is on T-Mobile's towers but getting crappy speeds come to T-Mobile and getting amazing download speeds.... Anyway I think its worth it I pay $110.00 @ month for our plan I have unlimited while my lady has 2GB of data ( she doesn't use much data) Lol
Below is my speeds to prove you I am not lying:

Currently use an international One X on Straight Talk, I bought off Craigslist, it's a little flaky. I am running CM10 ROM, stock Android works very well on this phone. Just some issues with group message texts, and not being able to see incoming calls, when currently on a call. But I used to have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus before switching to Straight Talk, and I miss the on screen menu keys, not a fan of hardware keys at bottom of the phone. I felt the screen size and overall size of the Galaxy Nexus was perfect, the One X, seems just a bit too large, mainly the screen being taller on the One X, harder to one hand operate, where as my Galaxy Nexus was easier one handed, and I think the Nexus 4, is the same size as the Galaxy Nexus ?
Question at hand. Go to T-Mobile sign up on their contract and plan to get the Nexus 4 ? Or wait till stock is back on the Play Store in mid February per LG today, and stick on Straight Talk ?

what carrier are you getting it on?

so after 16 years, verizon's deciding to screw me over and take away my 21% discount because of the fact my father retired from a pharmecutial company after 35 years and verizon decided they don't want to give us the discount anymore, despite the fact he's receiving pension benefits etc.
thing is, my case is unique because i'm on a 550 min loyalty plan, and for 3 phones (and me with my unlimited data), we only pay $120 a month. that's a damn good price for verizon.
it wouldn't have stung so bad, bc my mother works for municipal govt, so we were going to apply for 15% and put it in her name..but at the last step they said sorry, you can't keep that loyalty plan, and the price will go up $30 or so to a 700 minute plan...i said, um NO, we use liek 5 minutes a month between the 3 of us, so yea, scrap that, thanks.
so now, i'm being told to jump through hoops to try to keep my discount, which i know it won't work (they want me to contact HR at the company to see if they'll give us an indiviudal 22% retiree discount..but i know they won't) and that i lose my discount the 19th.
so now, i'm pissed. after 16 years of verizon, they constnatly screw everybody over, and i'm done with it..so now i'm considering saying screw it and jumping to ATT or something and paying that ripoff of 90 something a month with limited data just to get rid of crap verizon once and for all.
what carriers are you guys looking to get the G2 on? i was going to get it thursday, but now i don't know if i should even bother, bc who knows if i'll be staying with verizon or not.
any advantages to any other carriers of verizon?
If your strictly looking at price I believe T-Mobile is cheapest but your coverage will likely suffer.. They have the phones already ready to order but aren't shipping it yet.. sprint has a 80 dollar unlimited everything plan here in Chicago for 1 lineup can check ur local market but they won't have the phone till sometime in October... I have ATT which everyone says is the second coming of Verizon but not as bad.. personally never had a problem with ATT cs or service... They are just as pricey as Verizon though.. If u just want the phone now Att is the only option currently.
ATT usually has discount programs as well..check with customer service or the business department.

thing is, even with a discount, the price we pay irght now is so low lol and since my dad is retired, i doubt they'd do anything since he's not a "current" employee, and my current job gives 15% on verizon, but nothing on ATT (i checked for my coworkers.)
honestly, i'd probably stay with verizon bc even without the discount, my phone is literally like $50 a month to just pay to my dad for when he pays the bill..while i've got unlimited data still, as opposed to the standard $90 a month.
thanks for the opinion though..i hear ATT's LTE speeds are faster too...because verizon, where i am, is pretty damn slow. in my house i get like barely 10mbps, and this market has been here for over a year now
I understand that the loss of the discount is discouraging but that is what companies do. I work for a a company that offers different discounts but when you no longer qualify for the discount then it can no longer be applied.
I don't know what city you are in or what other services would be better in your area, but if you can keep your unlimited data I would put pride aside and pay the difference and enjoy the LG G2 on Thursday.

i'm thinking about it bc of the cheap price i'm paying monthly.
i think at this point, the second verizon tries to take my unlimited away (or does) is when i'll finally leave. their price structure is literally identical to ATT, except ATT gives you 1 more gig of data for the same exact price. that's a no brainer. if they honestly want to keep me, they'll let me keep unlimited data, seeing as i don't use upgrades and i'm buying at full price.
forgot to mention that i use like 7-15 gigs every single month too, lol..

so after 16 years, verizon's deciding to screw me over and take away my 21% discount because of the fact my father retired from a pharmecutial company after 35 years and verizon decided they don't want to give us the discount anymore, despite the fact he's receiving pension benefits etc.
thing is, my case is unique because i'm on a 550 min loyalty plan, and for 3 phones (and me with my unlimited data), we only pay $120 a month. that's a damn good price for verizon.
it wouldn't have stung so bad, bc my mother works for municipal govt, so we were going to apply for 15% and put it in her name..but at the last step they said sorry, you can't keep that loyalty plan, and the price will go up $30 or so to a 700 minute plan...i said, um NO, we use liek 5 minutes a month between the 3 of us, so yea, scrap that, thanks.
so now, i'm being told to jump through hoops to try to keep my discount, which i know it won't work (they want me to contact HR at the company to see if they'll give us an indiviudal 22% retiree discount..but i know they won't) and that i lose my discount the 19th.
so now, i'm pissed. after 16 years of verizon, they constnatly screw everybody over, and i'm done with it..so now i'm considering saying screw it and jumping to ATT or something and paying that ripoff of 90 something a month with limited data just to get rid of crap verizon once and for all.
what carriers are you guys looking to get the G2 on? i was going to get it thursday, but now i don't know if i should even bother, bc who knows if i'll be staying with verizon or not.
any advantages to any other carriers of verizon?

My friend, I went through a very similar situation, so hopefully I can help you. My gf and I got crappy reception at work for the past 6 years on Verizon and I finally had enough. Verizon came out to test reception and agreed that it wasn't acceptable so they waived our etf's. I was also with Verizon for 16 years.
We jumped on our friends t-mobile account to try it out and what a mistake that was. Same crappy reception at work and much worse reception overall compared to Verizon. And their building penetration sucks huge donkey balls. I would get LTE in a strip mall parking lot but not 50 feet away inside a store. It was a joke.
I strongly believe that you get what you pay for with t-mobile. And we live in San Diego, which is a major city obviously with t-mobile LTE. It sucked.
We went to AT&T and couldn't be happier! Their reception, LTE coverage, speeds and customer service are unbelievable in our short experience. I'm not looking back at all!
I say make the jump bro! Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks man! no idea what I'm gonna do but as it stands I'll probably stick with Verizon. my reception is OK and the price point is decent. meh.

I've been with Sprint the past 10 years, but with my last 2 year contract coming up in 5 days, I'm dropping them. I'm simply tired of their data network always being behind the curve and false promises about it. I'll be moving to AT&T for the G2 and add a line to my wife's iPhone plan.
I have been on Verizon for probably the last 8 to 10 years. In the northwest USA they are hands down the best provider. The widest coverage and the best network speeds. But my biggest issue with them is their need to lock down every new device. I would have jumped ship a long time ago if I wasn't on a plan with my family. Im really hoping there is good development for the verizon version of the G2. I have been using a razr the last 2 years and people have done some amazing stuff with it. Hopefully the dev community keeps it going with the G2.

I could have written this same post, with two minor changes. I left Sprint after forever, tried out AT&T, and had a bad experience with them, tried T-Mobile (reluctantly), and boom, perfect service and works everywhere I work and play. Just goes to show you how location dependent different carriers are. T-Mobile loves the east coast. So now I have 2 lines on T-Mobile one unlimited everything, one 500mb for my wife who uses Wifi at home and work and averaged about 100MB per month on sprint for 100 bucks, and I get a 10 percent discount. Victory!

I just had a Tmo demo phone. Worked great in my office. Zero signal in my house (OK, I can deal with wifi if I must), zero coverage in my wifes office. That was the last straw.
Outdoors their coverage is fine, but building penetration is a problem area.

Must be an east coast thing, I get LTE in a gigantic police station on any floor I'm on. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to have kept t-mobile as we have no Wifi to use Wifi calling and my phone always needs to work. Outdoors is great, I agree, but as long as I get a bar or 2 in my office I'm okay with that.
I currently have AT&T for my work line and T-Mobile for my personal lines, my wife uses Verizon.
Around my area T-Mobile LTE is fantastic, I pay about $128 a month for 2 lines, unlimited talk, text and unlimited high speed data. That's including the $40 a month payment for the 2 phones (S4,HTC One). I do get a 20 percent discount on my lines thanks to my wife's employee discount from Lockheed Martin. In total I use about 35-40 GB of data and T-Mobile never bats an eye.
AT&T LTE has roughly the same coverage overall but slower than T-Mobile LTE around my parts. Verizon is the slowest but they have the absolute best coverage, we would find signal on my wife's iPhone 5 in the middle of no where when we travel, same place I would be showing zero service for both AT&T and T-Mobile.
Overall, I really do love T-Mobile, I wouldn't have said the same thing a couple years ago but they have massively improved.
well, not like anyone cares lol, but it looks like verizon is gonna give me 15% discount through my mom's work (as she works for govt)
thing is, they kept telling me we had to change to her name to get it..which by doing that would drop my loyalty plan and go into 700 minutes for $30 more.
i finally got a supervisor and they said no, if you validate via email, it doesn't matter, it will just add it on no matter if its your mom or dads discount, bc they're adding the discount bc of the domain, not bc of whos name is on it. only time we'd need to do an AOL is if we had to manually submit with a paystub.
so, i'm gonna get the 15% once i get into work tomorrow and go into my moms email and do it. not bad, i suppose...
and i think i'm gonna just get the G2 on an upgrade. do it on my dads upgrade, then after its activated, put his flip phone back on, and then put my sim in and keep my unlimited data. the proration for 1 day of data will be like, $1, and the only other fee will be the $30 upgrade fee..that's still better than paying 600 i guess lol
now to try to sell my GS4 bc i truly can't stand it anymore..
also a long time VZW customer (gotta be at least 10 years now, if not more). Also on a grandfathered unlimited LTE plan (contract expired already, going month to month). Will probably stick it out with VZW for at least the near future. Around here in the NYC area, t-mobile is abysmal and ATT is not that much better. VZW is clearly ahead of the game in terms of voice reception, so I really have no incentive to switch.
If VZW takes away my unlimited data, I'd probably switch to Sprint, or maybe ATT

can anyone confirm this will work? My plan is also a family plan where one party has a flip phone. If this will definitely work and will not result in my losing unlimited data, I might try it. Otherwise I'm forking out the $600
yeah dude, people do it all the time. the customer service rep even told me there's no charge back for deactivating it. I'm gonna ask the rep tomorrow if he loses commission if i do that... if so i won't do it, and I'll goto best buy since they don't make commission.. if not I'll do it.

I'm on Verizon and I'm sticking with it. The only carrier I might consider is AT&T, but here's the clincher for me: coverage. Yes, I live in Baltimore/DC area so I could get good coverage from any carrier. However, my family is from a small town (we are talking population less than 1500) an hour and a half away from any city of significance, further from any real metro area. Was up there this past 4th of July and I was pulling down 18Mbps via LTE, and I had that coverage the whole way up there. AT&T just can't match it. They lag in LTE and I'm not optimistic on them because they never had a substantial build out on HSPA. That same town was Edge when Verizon had 3g coverage. Now it is at least HSPA. All I can say is Verizon cannot be touched for coverage. LTE-A is right around the corner, as-is VoLTE, and the G2 will have us covered for this capability.

Note Edge Japanese User guides

Hello,
I currently live in Japan and am quite lucky to get my Edge today 10/23rd (around 6pm, Japan time). I am not a big forum user, and barely write any threads but I thought I would share some info and impressions in the coming days.
As I am a full-time teacher and father, my free time is quite limited but I will do my best.
As you know, Japan is the first country to get the edge and as planned I should get mine in a few hours. Browsing the carrier website (DOCoMo), I stumbled upon the user guides (simple and complete). Most of it is similar to the Galaxy Note 4 so it may not be very exciting for you guys... There aren't any English versions, sorry.
Annoying thing: the AC adapter and cables are sold separately. I am still not sure of the price but it should be quite reasonable.
As the guides are quite heavy, I am attaching the link, not the files.

Enjoy,
David
Thanks. Post as much as your time allows.

same question i asked tokyoguy how much did you buy it and how many yen is it more expensive than the note 4?
do they have lots of stocks or just a few?
Good morning. The phone was very expensive with my carrier (Docomo) as a continuing costumer. The original price was 98000 yen, roughly 1000$. With a 2 year contract, the price was down by 40%, but the data and call plans you can choose from are all very expensive, around 6000 for voice and 2gb of 4G.
alsomy carrier does not have the note 4. as it is will not be released in Japan.
Keep us updated for anthing thing you want to say about it.
I am still wait for it. Thanks
Also, since I had preordered the device on day 1, I don't know about the quantity. However, another carrier which was supposed to have them today too had to cancel and delay the release by a few days/weeks since they did not receive enough.
First impressions. After a few hours of use and settings fun.
First,I should mention that my previous (i.e until yesterday) phone was a GS2. Compared with the GS 2, the edge is obviously a huge leap, pun intended.
The build quality is nothing short of amazing, I actually kept in my pocket at work, just to keep touching the back cover.
About the edge screen: I really thought it would prevent me from holding the phone firmly but it does not. The biggest hurdle is the size, coming from a smaller phone.
Having regular hands and fingers, I can use it with one hand without being bothered by the edge screen but it obviously is much easier to hold with 2 hands.
I also noticed it is sluggish, but it may get better as I uninstall, disable bloat ware.

I got my monthly bill down by not doing any of their net services (and use a mobile router instead). So my monthly bill is around 4,500 yen (that includes talk time and the phone payments as well. )
Just fyi

I pay 3,450 or so for the router. I use wimax, but I seriously can't recommend them. If you can handle only 7GB a month, I'd say go with docomo or emobile(now Ymobile)
I chose wimax because they have a no-limit policy... but their connection is horrible ><
