Hi everyone,
I have recently bought myself a Nexus 7 3g(not opened yet) and i want to know what i need to know about before i root it (using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.2). I know to check the usual thing like making sure everything works. But when i root do i need to know such as know the baseband version/ril version (matching pair)? If there is any issues using this method of rooting with recovery installed?
Or is it as easy as Unlock>Root>(Custom Recovery box checked) and to store back to factory default Flash Stock+Unroot>OEM Lock
I saw this in teh forum "When I drop to the command prompt in TWRP, it says "insufficient space" or something similar, and is trying to backup to the /sdcard/media/TWRP directory instead of to the PC. I have an 8GB model w/ about 6GB in use." Is this still an issue? should i be concerned?
Should i grab a copy of this? 4.2.1 (JOP40D) - md5: e5d22e0791ab2f5d470bba77fbd6771d - size: 277.7MB. Should this be matching to mine?
Many Thanks!!!
***Another question is, how to i tell which one i got? a Nakasig or Tilapia
I wouldn't use a kit to root. Its easy to do manually just follow this thread

Thanks for the above post but will any one be able to answer my other questions? Like the difference between Nakasig and Tilapia? Are they the same? I want to install openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-tilapia.img but what happens if my device is the Nakasig model? I havent opened my device yet since i'm waiting for my screen protector.
I want to root root this device but with limited knowledge i'm worried i might brick it.
Its real easy. Its mostly an automated process. Follow the on screen directions. Make sure u have USB debugging checked on in developer settings. Click on the about>build a bunch of times if your developer tab isn't open. YouTube this if needed. Don't know about the other questions

Ok, so samething. Many thanks guys. I feel a lot better now.
Hello, I am new to XDA developers and this is my first post here. Now my question is rather simple, yet I have not found a solution for it on the forums here. Now the issue is, I have owned an LG Nexus 4 (E960) for about a month now, and when ever I play games, the on screen buttons always seem to get in my way. Now my question is, how do you disable/re-enable the on screen buttons without rooting? (The reason why I don't want to root is that I heard it voids the warranty). Please reply with any information you think might be useful, as I have found these buttons to be frustrating when I play any game.
Thanks in advance,
Android 9000
You need to root, but otherwise try shaking your phone vigorously for 5 seconds, with the screen turned to 69% brightness, to disable the soft keys.

Funny, but not helpful. If I root is there a way to revert back to stock without google knowing I rooted the phone?
Well I use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen but u need to be rooted. U can always unroot your device if u send it back in for warranty reasons.

Use this guide to root, and you can also use it to return to stock should you need to for warranty reasons.

Also this is my first android phone, previously coming from a bad nokia phone so I have no idea how to root. Do you know what the easiest root is? When I jailbroke my iPod touch it just took a single click, no messing around with the command prompt and moving around files. So basically where would be the best place to get a root toolkit for my nexus 4 with something like a one click root, and a one click backup?

There is only 1 way to root a Nexus, unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom recovery, it is very easy once you start and very unlikely to go wrong, it will wipe your data though.
And its even easier to return to stock as Google provide factory images.

So there is no "one click to root" tool kit for the nexus 4? All I want is those softkeys to get out of my way when I play games, other than that the phone is fine. I don't want to ruin my nexus 4 by getting it into a bootloop or bricking it, and since there are so many steps to unlock the bootloader and root the device, I am bound to mess up somewhere.

you don't want to be using a one click... chances of boot loops and you won't be learning anything about rooting. Feel free to use the Nexus toolkit, but good luck solving that pesky boot loop. The guide I linked is really easy to follow, PM me and I'll write a really simple step by step, and if you get teamviewer i will watch you do it, and stop you going wrong.:fingers-crossed:

Rooting with a custom recovery will break OTA, but the app won't. But since the app needs root, basically yeah
I think I will just wait until the next version of android comes out (version 5) so that I will not have to re-root, and for now I will just have to put up with those annoying softkeys. I would really want to see google include a gesture option for hiding/showing those buttons as I don't think I am the only one here that hates accidentally touching them during games.

you can root without flashing a custom recovery, it there in WUGS tool kit on this website
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469,
also you can use keep root after taking a OTA from google with this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...m9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ..
I used it twice on my N7, theres always a chance that it might not work. But if you atleast unlock the bootloader from there you should be able to push root agian from a tool kit if you want.

I think I might finally root my 6P after having it for 2 weeks. I was going to root using the SDK/ADB method on my Macbook Pro but it's such a hassle. I could just use my Surface Pro 3 but I saw that Wugs has is Nexus Tool Kit working with the 6P. I have used his Tool Kit with my Nexus 7 2012 and it worked great. However, I read somewhere that the "one click" methods cause issues on the 6P. Is this true and or has this been fixed? I really liked using his tool kit before since it is so easy & effective. I am surprised that there aren't any other one click type kits out for this phone...

You're better off doing it with fastboot via the SDK. Toolkits are notorious for causing problems, you only need to look through the Q&A section to see that. If you need a guide I have a detailed one here:

Thanks for the link & advice. Like I mentioned I have used the Wugs Toolkit before on my Nexus 7 without any issues and have used other one clicks on other phones with zero problems. But the way I read it was that is some specific problem with using them on the 6P. The thing is I am limited on space on my Surface pro 3 and the SDK takes up a lot of valuable hard drive space.

As Heisenberg said, you're best doing it with the sdk and fastboot.
It shouldn't take all that much space really, downloading only the components you need.
I used wugfresh on the 6p with no issues, but I also know how to fix it from sdk if there are problems. The toolkit is nice because it's easier. It will download everything you need.
Have used both methods, but seem to come back to the SDK way of doing things as it gives me a peace of mind that every step has been done an is complete. The toolkit "zooms" through the steps and if not paying attention you could miss something and believe you are at one point but not really (I am easily confused lol).
Hey guys, before you say anything, yes I have been reading guides and looking up stuff, but every guide i read has a different step, and quite honestly I trust XDA more so I decided to post the question here:
How can I properly root my Nexus 6P running Android N version NBD90X? I don't particularly care much about trying to get Android Pay to work (think it's too late for that anyway), so any method works with me.
Thanks!
So,. I just did this. Used WUGs tool. Listed in the 6p index oage. Worked so extremely well I used it again to restore after I butchered my system UI and rooted again.

I have been reading about people bricking there devices trying to root. Are they doing something wrong or is it just not stable? I have rooted a few phones before but what i am reading is scaring me from rooting this one. Any input would be appreciated thanks.
I use my phone often. Not much gaming. And go to bed with usually 60+% battery. I'm currently using Weta Rom but they all are good. Its a trickier root than normal however I think this may be the new normal so just follow directions carefully and you will be fine.

Rocking VS995 here. Followed the Dirty Santa steps and it worked easily. Been flashing everything I could on this device and settled on Weta because of the sound mods and still having all the stock features. I've gotten 8hrs SoT with a Blacked Out theme, Substratum themeing, no lag, and Deep Sleep like it's in a coma. Rooting the v20 is a must really at this point. The only downside I've come across is it vibrating during boot up while it's connected to a charger. Otherwise I've rooted, flashed, and been living the life.

It has been done guys. i thought i bricked it a few times but i am up and running on stock again with super su and root chaecker saying i am rooted
I am still debating on rooting myself I prefer to keep it root free for at least 6 months in cause something goes wrong with the hardware.
Main reason I root is so I can control what runs and what doesn't which should be a default ability in android in my opinion. I don't root to use custom roms I am always concerned about security of 3rd party roms

Hit the power button to turn the screen off. Then hold your hand over the proximity speaker to turn off the second screen. When they're both black, you can use the phone regularly. It explains all this in the Dirty Santa root method thread.

If you want the static to go away. @BackCheck made a stock verizon kernel that works just a good as the konverged kernel. I get the same battery life as I did on the konvergered kernel and plus its more stable Just do a backup in twrp. Then hit wipe, advanced wipe, and check mark cache and dalvik and then go back and flash the restock kernel. The first boot take a bit of time so make sure your phone is charged a bit! You wont lose data or anything so dont worry.

I can't answer this - my question to you, however, has to do with your experiences in rooting.
I have the Verizon V20, non-rooted. The software version (it has taken one update since I bought this a few weeks ago) is VS99513A.
Can you confirm that this was the software version you had (have) when rooting?
And you said you thought you had bricked the phone a few times - what, specifically, are you referring to? I've read enough of the DirtySanta rooting thread to see some of the issues people have run into (static, long wait for first boot, etc.).
One of the unfortunate problems with a universal carrier rooting thread is that it doesn't delineate any one specific carrier and issues with rooting that might be particular to that carrier among all the posts. You have to wade your way through, lol, to find specific Verizon issues, for example. (That said, I'm very happy there's a rooting thread!)
It seems that from what I've read in the DirtySanta thread, many issues came up because people didn't explicitly follow the guide.
So, can you comment on your software version (13A?) before rooting, and what, specifically, gave you pause during the process and what I should be prepared for?
(By the way, the major thing I want from rooting is to be able to get hotspot wifi capability without having to pay Verizon for it. I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data and have not been convinced that it's in my interests to switch to their new "unlimited", particularly since I can't use my corporate discounts, and will potentially run into hotspot throttling after a certain limit, etc.)
Thanks!

This is possible with a rooted phone that has a kernel patched to bypass boot state verification (most kernels have this now) and using something like SU hide + Root Switch. I am currently running this setup and can use root switch to turn off root on the fly, use AndroidPay and then turn root back on when done.
I'll admit, I have yet to actually pay for anything with Android pay......but using this approach, I was able to add my credit card as well as bypass all checks with the SafetyNet helper app.

Some of the roms like notsostock have people explaining how to pass the checks and all the apps used.
You can run the exploit on 13a without any problems. If you still don't believe me or whatever just use the kdz to downgrade to 12a then do the exploit.
