Impossible to get SMS in deep sleep :( - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
After flashing my Note 3 to a Note 5 based rom 5.1.1 like DarkLord or Norma, I have an annoying problem with sms.
With the rom freshly flashed, if I install a third party SMS app (textra), I don't receive sms by time.
It happens when the phone enter in deep sleep after not using it for like 10 minutes. There is no way to get any sms even if I open textra after a friend sent me a sms.
I only get the sms if I open textra and someone send me an SMS before the phone goes into deep sleep.
However, It doesn't happen with the stock message app or Hangout.
Do you have any idea what is doing that ?
There is nothing installed on the rom, only the third party sms app (it also happens with chomp sms and handcent).
Any help would be golden, thanks a lot !

Hi.
Please check "Deep Sleep" mode setting from somewhere of ROM. This should be in settings. If not try, "Wipe Data and Cache" before installing ROM!
Sorry, if i'm wrong

Thanks for your reply, I always totally wipe device before flashing the ROM.
There was an option in SmartManager for memry management, disabling it didn't change anything.
I can't find anything else. I also tried changing kernel management mode, nothing...
Any other suggestions ?
Notifications poped by some applications are shown only when waking up the applications...
Is the problem from the kernel ? This is driving me insane :s

I just installed "Note5 Norma ROM" works great, just some bugs with Camera icon, progress bars very fast and missing some Note3 features such as gesture working. Any else works great.
You can try Norma ROM, not too bad. Maybe this fix your issue.
Or try,
Restore Stock and Re-Root, Re-Install Recovery (i recommend CWM) and Re-Install ROM.
Hope your issue fix

I have this same problem. I think, all apps in Note5 ROM are frozen in background. So now I can't use Textra, because I don't received messages and I needed switch to stock Message app. :/

Receving sms solved for me with a workaround
Hi there, had the same problem with norma v15. Textra installed too. I checked in settings - applications - application permissions - permission tab which applications could do something with messages . I forgot I had Ultimate car dock installed. Removed the permissions from ultimate car dock for messaging and sms worked again. For me a ok workaround but not a final solution. Hope this helps others!
In my case I don't know if it had something to do with deep sleep.

I have installed Norma v15 (also have been v13) Note5 Port. Works good, working Deep Sleep (uses ~1% per hour with 2G Signal). I receiving calls, message, even GCM push notification (if network or wifi enabled). I now recommend some ways/things:
1) Make sure, you not installed Amplify.
2) Make sure, you not installed Greenify.
3) Make sure, you not installed Deep Sleep (app for Android at PlayStore)
4) Make sure, you not installed Clean Master
5) Make sure, you not installed DU Battery Saver or like this apps.
6) Make sure, you not installed BatteryGuru (if you Note3 Snapdragon users)
Workaround for those things, if you using those apps:
1) Disable Amplify from Xposed and reboot phone and check.
2) wipe data and cache, uninstall, re-install and greenify only non-system app and that app not in use (like clash of clans). Reboot phone to working correctly this app.
3) I not recommend use Deep Sleep app (BatterySaver). I now haven't solution for this app, because i re-installed ROM for this app
4) In Note3 have built-in Clean Master (cheetah mobile) SDK, use, but never NOT ACCEPT ROOT permission
5) BatterySaver apps can save battery bit longer, not a DAY or MONTH. "This uses battery percent by Cleaning RAM, after cleaned RAM, apps/widgets re-running in Background and uses more battery than normal using"
6) If you using BatteryGuru, please use "Uses minimal battery" mode for apps you want work in background.
Let me know, those apps installed or no. Maybe i can help.

Randomn screen wake-ups?

I am on lightspeed 2.01 with the latest Thor kernel. I have tried the taboony rom, civato's and a few others but I have never been able to fully stop randomn screen wakeups even sometimes when I have wifi off completely. Is there a way to fully stop it from happening? Thanks in advance.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I couldnt say the issue right now, expecially since you have been trying multiple roms. I do know that random screen wake ups were an issue with original a500s until they were updated for stock. I used to have this issue as well until I updated.
However, in your case I would recommend a complete wipe, no memory card, and test with rooted stock rom or rom of your choice. then if issue doesnt happen, put your memory card in and test, and if still working fine then start redownloading and reinstalling what you want.
If it happens even after complete wipe then might be a hardware problem and may eventually have to contact acer.
If you have a "screen on issue", I would point the finger at some downloaded apps, and not necessarily the rom.
It is normal, for a rom, to goto sleep, then immediately wake for a minute, then go to sleep permanently.
If it's waking at intervals after this point, then it is an app issue.

Again as usual Its likely a app that is causing this.. You can install a app called
advanced task manager and make sure you have TI BACKUP INSTALLED.
run the task manager kill all running apps.
DO not let the task manager run in background you can turn it off in its settings.
look at the apps that keep starting themselves after you put it to sleep. IN Ti freeze one of the apps running.
if the trouble continues try another app. go thru all of your apps until you find the app not playing nice.. try checking its settings to stop it from auto updating..
apps that useally do this are like facebook twitter email news apps weather apps and so on .
Good Luck and Happy Diagnostic Fun..

Hangouts SMS crash [solved]

Problem
-------------
Hangouts crashes trying to send SMS after 4.4.3 upgrade. 3rd Party apps do the same. As soon as you start typing hangouts crashes.
You disabled "Messaging" before the upgrade and can't re-enable it. "Enable" is grayed out in the Settings->Apps menu.
Solution
---------
In the Settings->apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. This will fix sending SMS/MMS. You can't have it disabled in 4.4.3 safely.

Sorry, can you move this to Q/A? My bad.
OK I found a fix. In the apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. Not ideal since I'll have to re-disable the others I don't want. But at least it gets messaging re-enabled.
That makes SMS work again oddly enough. Just need to deal with having a "messaging" app in the drawer that I don't use I guess.

Nice! Thanks for posting the fix, could come in handy for me once I switch to 4.4.3 as I have 68 services/apps frozen =P
I also had this issue. I factory reset, which is usually a decent idea after updates. It definitely had something to do with messaging being disabled and I couldn't reenable it either. Glad you found an alternate fix, loving the update so far

Yeah if I had been rooted and done titantium backup recently, that would have been my approach too. I didn't want to have to redo all my apps and settings etc. Glad I didn't have to.
I didn't use TiBu to restore. It's weird but this phone is the first that I don't really back things up like I used to. Mostly cause I have no risk of breaking stuff via flashing nightlies and the like. I've had iffy experiences restoring old data on to new builds so I started from scratch. So far so good.
Yeah I had this too. After the update, i could receive but not send SMS/MMS. Had the stock app previously disabled and then the enable button was gone. Drove me absolutely crazy last night and most of today. Tried half a dozen SMS apps and even downloaded two entire Roms to get their MMS.apk and try to install them (which did not work at all). Even deleted all my messages with an SMS backup app. Nada. Moto support (obviously bad idea) said to clear cache for entire phone, which totally could have worked but was completely unhelpful. I did dozens of Google searches about it and came up empty every time. I was just about to give in to a factory reset, which I consider the my last resort, and I checked the action overflow in the disabled apps section and found the "reset app preferences". Then just browsing XDA for battery tips a few minutes later, I came across then. I even checked the Dev section earlier. But I guess I should have checked general. Thanks for putting this out there for others to find.
Thanks for this solution. Made life better for me. I guess 4.4.3 doesn't allow us to disable the messaging app.
You are the man! I thought I was the only one having the problem. Thank you! :good:
me too. I can't believe it took me this long to find this thread. Not being able to send texts was a bummer. I was using some feature called "voicemal.":silly:

HELP - Notifications not coming through when screen is off

Hi everyone,
I've been having a very strange problem for a couple of days now. Whenever my phone's screen is off and the phone has been idle for some time, I don't receive notifications anymore. Facebook notifications don't work at all, no matter whether the phone is active or not, but I also don't get FB Messenger and WhatsApp notifications. Sometimes they come through as soon as I turn on the screen, and sometimes I only see them when I open the respective app. I didn't mess with app permissions, and I also have set each app to "important" in the notification settings. It also doesn't seem to matter whether I'm on WiFi or on mobile data.
Gmail, SMS and calls don't seem to be a problem, although I sometimes have a feeling that emails come through to my phone with a considerable delay, as compared to my Gmail inbox on my computer.
The strange thing is, when I had the phone all new, everything worked as it should and I received ALL notifications from EVERY app IMMEDIATELY when they came in. This issue with notifications no longer coming through started occurring a couple days ago after I had first flashed the Boeffla Kernel (though I'm not sure if it has anything to do with that.) So I went back to the stock kernel, but the problem was still there. Then I re-flashed my original Nandroid backup from when I had first flashed TWRP, in order to set the system back to "stock", wiped data and cache, re-installed every app (the critical ones, i.e. Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, via Play Store, and the non-critical ones via Titanium Backup), and the problem is still there. I've done this three times now, to no avail.
My phone is rooted and I have Xposed installed, I'm using SuperSU and a number of root apps such as 3c Toolbox, Le DPI Changer and Font Installer. 3c Toolbox is set to clear caches on every reboot. As for Xposed, I use only VibrateMode to change the notification slider from all/important/none to all/vibrate/none, and GravityBox to center the clock in the status bar and to set the volume buttons to skip tracks on long press. I also have Glimpse Notifications installed so that the screen lights up when a notification comes in.
The funny thing is, notifications not coming through is one of the reasons I switched to the OPT from the Huawei Mate 7, where this issue was due to power management settings by Huawei. Since I'm now back on the stock kernel and have also no power saving apps such as Greenify or Amplify enabled, I am really out of ideas as to why this happens. The next step is to flash a fully stock OOS 2.1.2 (my Nandroid backup is already rooted and with my Google account set up), wipe data and cache, and re-install every app again.
Does anyone here have any idea what the problem (and the solution to it) might be?
UPDATE: After I wrote the last sentence, I received two messages simultaneously, one from Messenger and one from WhatsApp. I was at home and on WiFi, and both coming in at the same time must mean that the phone receives push notifications in fixed intervals, since the sender of both messages was the same person and sent them consecutively, i.e. with at least a minute in-between. Now I am especially confused since a) they came through at all, even though the screen was off and the phone had been idle for at least 15 minutes, and b) they came through at the same time, which was definitely not the time when they had been sent.
The confusion is complete now ... any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
The problem persists. Today for half a day I received all notifications, after that once again only when I turned on the screen or opened the respective app. WiFi all the time, no settings changed in between.
This really annoys me to no end. I don't own an expensive smartphone so it doesn't work as it should. I never had any troubles like this with my old Sony Xperia V. Then again it ate through a full battery in half a day ...

Yes. As I said, I reflashed my original (rooted but otherwise unaltered) Nandroid backup and then reinstalled all apps, and am not using anything that could interfere with apps receiving notifications.
The order in which notifications come through automatically vs. only when I activate the display or open the respective app also doesn't seem to follow any regularity ... sometimes it works as it should, sometimes it doesn't.
As for Facebook notifications, I somehow have a feeling this is a specific FB-related problem. But as for Messenger, WhatsApp and now also Instagram as I've noticed, it's all the same issue as described in my original post. The only exception really seems to be Gmail, which always notifies me of new emails.
EDIT: All these apps have unaltered permissions, i.e. are allowed to keep the phone awake, and all apps are set to "important" for notifications, so this doesn't seem to be the issue either.
EDIT 2: I also installed push notification fixer to see what interval is set for the GCM services, and it's set to 5 minutes on WiFi and 6 minutes on mobile data. So that also can't be the issue.
Could the screen not lighting up when a notification comes in have something to do with deep sleep, possibly? But then why does it work for Gmail???

I could suggest you one more thing. Its a shot in the dark .
Could you check "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" in you advanced Wi-Fi settings ?
If the above is not a problem then out of ideas buddy. As a last option you could clean flash by wiping everything and just install whatsapp and other apps in which you are facing a notification delay. If it works then there could be some other application interfering , it it doesn't then i am not sure what it could be.

i do remember reading some time ago that these intervals do not impact the battery life, but you could test for yourself just to be sure
So, currently most notifications are working again for me, for whatever reason. Facebook being the big exception, of course. Might have to do with keeping the apps opened in the multitasking overview. If that's what it takes, then fine ...

Which app? Only Facebook, or other apps as well? For me it's working now, but I can't say why exactly. I use a number of tweaks on my phone (root, Xposed framework etc.) so I can't definitely say which of my apps cause issues and which fix them again.
As for Gmail, it appears that when there's already a notification for an email and a little later another one comes in, it won't play a sound or vibrate. That seems to be standard behaviour but I find it VERY annoying, even though I set Gmail to notify me on EACH incoming email.
despite suggesting a fix i seem to be experiencing the same problem as well. it happens on both wifi and mobile data so you cant blame any settings. my best guess would be its because of the latest update. gonna have to backup my data and revert back to the older firmware to solve this issue.

Not really, no. Mine are currently working again, after I re-flashed the stock system and set up everything again step-by-step. It's possible that some app or tweak or setting caused the issue, but I couldn't find out which one.

i suspected it could be because of restoring apps from titanium backup directly instead of downloading and installing them from the play store first, but even with that i still face the same problem. currently on oxyslim. come to think of it, could it be caused by the power tweaks? did you use them before when you faced the problem?
Same problem here on OOS3.0.1. Inbox and WhatsApp messages don't often come through until I turn on the screen. Completely stock. Didn't have the problem on CM13, I think. It's really annoying because I can miss a lot of important emails from work. Even put the apps I want in No Battery Optimization mode. No help really.
i have the same problem. I'm on OOS3.0.2 with Cyanoxy. Can anyone help?
Same problem here...
What the F?
This device is almost a year old and I still can't use it as PHONE. I am not asking for some fancy stuff, but fixing the gigantic bugs that are preventing me from even using this daily.
Fix for those willing to tweak the system: install the latest Boeffla kernel, it has an option to turn off doze.

Pro 5 notification issues

I got my pro 5 a week ago. All I can say is Flyme needs work... The phone seems to put all the apps on sleep mode and I don't receive incoming notifications for incoming emails or facebook or instagram. Anyone encounter this issue with not receiving notifications and is there a fix?
You might want to check what apps are allowed to run when the phone is in standby. You can find this in Settings/Power Management/Power Optimization/App Management
You are right. Flyme does have issues. It does not have a problem with its default apps. If you're using the default email app you will get notifications. But if you have loaded a third party email app it won't even do a sync unless you manually refresh. I know it's bull****. Also you have to use the on board music player otherwise if again it's a third party app after a few minutes it will go to sleep. I have changed it not to go asleep in power management but it won't make any difference and go to sleep mode after a few minutes. It's default apps won't sleep. Even youtube won't go to sleep which is a good thing especially if your streaming media through chromecast. And if your screens turned off it won't switch off. But flyme should fix this issue. I believe it's a major negative to the phones software.
Just long press app you want in recents window, it will lock it into ram... Works for me for viber, skype, fb messenger etc
I 'm just after 5 minutes I do not have to get notifications for example Gmail to see new emails that have come to me
any idea why this happens, and made the necessary settings so that this does not happen and some app are running in the background or when the screen is off
but I have that problem , notifications do not work.

Whatsapp notification problem

Hi,
I have problem with WhatApp notification since OP7pro, many times I have to open Whatsapp to receive the message.
I disabled all battery optimization for whatsapp or any apps in battery settings, disabled all in advanced optimization, but notifications are not working fine.
Maybe do I debloat any essensial system apps? But sometimes it works fine and sometimes doesn´t. Seem a deep sleep problem or Oxygen kill apps
Any idea or solution?

I don´t have installed xxx nolimit on OP8pro, but I used Extrem Eagle Debloat, but I don´t see any app important on the list.
Sometimes works, sometimes notification are delayed and sometimes I receive messages only if I open Whatsapp.
