I saw the cm website had a new cm13 nightly for angler, so I decided to try it out, so I downloaded it and gapps, and rebooted into twrp, then I wiped everything besides for internal storage and then I proceeded to Install cm, it took a few minutes, and then when it was done I rebooted. The first sign of something weird was that after the regular your device can't be checked for corruption message it went black and then said that my device is corrupt in red letters, then it started the cm boot animation, I waited about 5 minutes and nothing happened so I rebooted into recovery and it asked me for an encryption password... My device was not previously encrypted and I didn't require a password to Install cm, so I tried wiping everything besides for internal storage, and then I was about to flash again, but non of my files were there so I had nothing to flash.... So I rebooted into my bootloader and fastbooted stock and now I'm on stock, but all my files and backups are gone. I guess that's why it's good to have an external sd, because that never got wiped by installing a rom before, and if I would have one, I would have all my pictures, music, and app backups. But now I have to start from scratch all because I tried a new build cyanogen mod
This is your fault not CM. You said you were on a rom that was unencrypted. CM roms default to encrypt so that is how you lost your data. You should have done research before you installed as CM with the start of LP ships encrypted.
CM ROMs usually encrypt the data partition which may explain your loss?

Yes, you would have had to flash cm13 then a kernel that supports unencrypted storage then boot

Well I always flashed elementalX after flashing any roms but Its for aosp... I never had a nexus before and I guess I didn't know enough about encryption.
Yea it's one of those trial and error kind of deals. It sucks. That corruption error is because you need to flash the vendor.img file in fastboot. I believe we have a twrp one available as well but that link is buried in the chroma rom thread.

You can flash that in twrp to get that corruption. But that could be the unlocked bootloader message which nobody has found to get rid of yet

So its different than the stock vendor.img that come with the factory build?
I saw two messages one about that it can't check for corruption and that I always see, and another that my device is corrupted and that was a first.
I think that second one is also kernel related. I remember Leankernel saying the corruption and then he fixed it and now its just the bootloader one.

What I mean is that I had already flashed the vendor.img that came with the mdb08m build using fastboot
Then I believe you are experiencing that kernel error. They have to change some settings in the default kernel in cm13 to get rid of that error. If you flash leankernel it should get rid of that one.

If you used the flash-all helper script to reinstall stock, it will wipe all internal storage (if you look at the script contents, that's what the "-w" does).
I know it's a bit late now but I'd recommend always copying backups off the device when making major changes.

Guys I'm a liitle late to the party on this convo but I'm in a similar but different situation. I installed the latest temasek 11/29 ROM. Was previously on purenexus. After installing the ROM and gapps I restarted the system and got a message that my phone can't be trusted. The phone then went on to encrypt itself. Booted fine so I just wanted to see if I could still access twrp and if all my internal storage was OK. Good on both accounts. So my question is do I have to decrypt before switching ROMs say back to purenex or can I boot to recovery and just wipe cache, dalvik, sys and data and flash whatever rom I want?

Sooo... Where to begin? I was previously on the latest Paranoid but decided I just couldn't wait so as soon as the stock 4.3 images were available, I wiped and went to 4.3. Used the updated SuperSU (chainfire's) and restored some apps from Titanium and all was well... Stock, rooted, and moving along. Then I see an amazing boot animation someone made for the N4 so I just had to have it. Downloaded it, rebooted into TWRP and flashed it and BOOM device no longer boots. I tried every which way from Sunday to get it to boot and to no avail it no boot. So I said screw it, I'll just wipe and start over. I formatted cache, flashed bootloader, boot.img, and system.img (didn't think there was any point to reflash radio) and still no boot... I'm stumped. Am I forgetting something blatantly obvious here? I mean I flashed, bootloader, boot image, and system image... I should basically be at a brand new device. I'm really trying not to format user data unless I have to, and I don't see how anything in user data would be preventing me from booting as it really only reads that stuff at started and not necessarily at 'boot' right? I'm hanging at the Google screen and never even make it to the Nexus X animation portion of boot. What am I missing?

boot animation goes into splash partition doesn't it? Still how many times do you see the splash screen on your device a day when you are not flashing systems?
boot animation goes either into /system/media/ or /data/local/ btw.
simply reflashing your rom without wiping anything would have resolved your issue. you are going to have to wipe data now most likely.

if the zip puts the bootanimation.zip into /system/media/ then yes(it most likely does, you can look into the zip and see). if it puts the bootanimation.zip into /data/local/ then no, because just reflashing the rom wouldnt clear out that folder. btw, if you ever want a boot animation to stick between flashing roms, put it into /data/local/. you can do this manually, with a root file explorer, without the need to flash anything.

Ahhh thanks for the tip mate. Didn't know that. Now it seems I have another problem. My phone seems to think it only has 8GB of storage when it has 16GB... this can't be good. Wonder how I would go about diagnosing and fixing this or maybe I should start another thread?

First try wiping the cache and Dalvik cache and reboot. If your phone still sees only 8GB of storage, perform a factory reset and reboot.
Finally, if your phone does not see 16GB of storage, follow the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033692.
I updated my phone to latest liquidsmooth rom two days ago and the phone freezes and restarts/reboots randomly like sometimes when im on phone/ playing a game/ using browser/ connected to charger. Yesterday I changed rom to latest carbon rom. Did install (3 wipes) as told in the thread but im still having the reboots.
Im using TWRP recovery and had used Utility 1.10 to go back to stock from Energy rom with safestrap recovery.
Can tell me whats the prob? Is it the kernel problem?
Have you tried upgrading or reflashing TWRP and then doing a clean install of Carbon? Its probably worth doing a fresh download of each first just to make sure you cover all your bases. These reboots were happening to me a few months ago and it drove me mad. following these steps fixed it for me.

Honestly, if you're using SafeStrap, that might be your problem. Remove SS and flash the ROM in TWRP. If your bootloader is unlocked, you don't really want to use SS. Also, make a stock backup in TWRP, prior to flashing. This way, it will be easier for you to recover in the future, and you won't need to go through the painful process of fastboot.

you might need to do a clean install.
- what version of TWRP are you using (anything other than 2.4 should be fine)?
- to perform the clean install, mount system, then try wiping everything (system, factory reset, & internal storage) - DO NOT WIPE external SD (I presume this is where you store the ROM files
- after wiping, reboot recovery, then install whichever 4.2.2 ROM you want follow by the GApps (use the 3/2013 version)

Since TWRP wasnt working for me, I tried flashing with CWM recovery by hashcode. Still had reboots. I was using TWRP 2.3.2.3
When you say wipe everything, does it include 'modem' and 'pds'? Saw these two options also inside Mount/Format menu of CWM recovery.
Also there was an option 'Mount sdcard' (internal I suppose) but when i click it nothing happens it remains as Mount sdcard. Rest of it changes from Mount to Unmount. Is there some problem with that?
Do I have to just Mount system only? Also after rebooting recovery do I have to mount system again?
I try again as you said meanwhile.

Then installed the ROM, 3/13 gapps, gsm fix. Reboot system. Still no use. I got 2 reboots in 5 mins in the ROM. I checked the md5 of the files and its ok. Dont know what else to try?

are you flashing a kernel at the same time?
I would recommend trying a basic 4.2.2 ROM right now - like unoffical AOKP.
another problem could be the GApps or GSM fix. try installing just the ROM without the GApps perhaps?
carbon was very solid too. unfortunately, I can't help you with the GSM fix, as I am CDMA.

I don't think changing the kernel will do it.... I suspect the issue is with your recoveries - will respond in other thread....
This isn't my very first time with flashing/rooting/etc. but I'm not that adept with it.
Got my S4 2 days ago but managed to get time today to work on it. I rooted successfully and everything was running perfect. I flashed over the newest Beanstalk ROM w/ gapps and it ran fine the first time it ran.
I can't get passed the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot logo every time I try to reboot the phone though...
If I wipe the cache/dalvik and reflash it still doesn't boot passed logo.
If I wipe the cache/dalvik and then wipe data (including the internal SD card, completely wiping it clean), flashing the ROM will work the first time it runs; once I reboot or just power it off then power it back on, stuck at Galaxy S4 logo... I let the ROM run first time through, input only what is needed to get to the home screen (google account/wifi setup/phone name/etc.), then I've tried rebooting it, shutting it down and powering it back up, letting everything update and waiting half an hour and restarting it... all have the same result, stuck at boot logo
I'm using TWRP, I have a recovery for stock but I don't want to use stock.
If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

This is EXACTLY what I was about to try... I'm literally reflashing the ROM fresh right now, going to put the kernel on the SD card, then reboot into recovery and wiping cache then flashing the kernel.
Will using a recovery that was made on a different kernel have any effect if I decide to use the recovery? I've heard bad things about flashing the wrong kernel (even though I know the one I'm about to use is the correct one) and really screwing stuff up if not done properly. I just want to make sure I don't screw anything up permanently.
Thanks.

Since there are no recovery categories according to this page,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917
I don't see where it would matter. No guarantees though.
I do know it is ESSENTIAL to match the type (TW or AOSP) ROM and kernel to avoid major problems.
I also recommend TWRP 2.5.0.2

I did a fresh install of the LiquidSmooth ROM and it's not hanging at boot logo whenever I reboot, and everything is working well. I suppose I'll stick with this for a while.
For my steps trying Beanstalk:
Boot into recovery (TWRP 2.6.0.0)
Factory reset;wipe cache/dalvik
Format Data
Factory reset;wipe cache/dalvik
Install ROM + Gapps
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
I then tried doing that exact process, after letting it boot once I rebooted into recovery and flashed KT Kernel and wiped then rebooted and it hung at boot logo.
I did it again but I installed ROM + Gapps + Kernel then wiped then rebooted and it still hung at boot logo.
I'll download and prepare a new install of Beanstalk and give it another try tomorrow. I'll make sure to backup Liquid in case I want to switch back.
Thanks again for the help!
Glad it's working out for you.
If I may ask here; how do I know if a certain kernel is compatible with a ROM? I know to match the version (4.2, 4.3. etc,) and base (AOSP/ TW) but is there anything else specific that I need to watch out for that could cause problems with flashing a kernel on a ROM?

Not really unless the rom dev for some reason doesn't recommend using a certain one. Kernels will act differently for everyone even on the same device with the same rom. Just need to flash them and find out which one works the best for you (battery life, overheating, smoothness, etc).
Always have a backup handy just in case something doesn't work right.
Alright so here's what I did, and how I got to my current situation and what the situation is.
What I did:
Had CM10.2 working fine on my rom. Recovery was TWRP (latest). Decided to flash PAC 4.3 cause I really like that rom. Flashed PAC 4.3. Worked fine, decided I wanted to restore titanium backups. Read in a few places that I needed to flash the SuperSU zip from chainfire. Downloaded the latest version from him and flashed in TWRP. TWRP took a -really- long time to flash the zip. After it finished I restarted the phone Wouldn't get past the samsung screen. Uhhh okay no problem.
I still have access to TWRP right? Yup, Still do. Do a full wipe and flash PAC 4.3 and Gapps. Flash is taking forever again. PAC gives no information at all (none of the usual ASCII artwork or anything). GApps loads the installer script but I get a can not mount /data and can not mount /system error.... Oh ****. Now I'm worried.
Download the PDA file from the sticky in the general section. (I337UCUAMDB_I337ATTAMDB_I337UCUAMDB_HOME.tar.md5) Pop the phone into download mode, and flash the PDA file via odin. Great, everything's going well. It flashes System, Flashes recovery, and everything else. Get a message saying All threads completed, Succeeded 1/failed 0. Awesome Right? No....
Phone restarts, goes into the stock recovery screen while something happens and restarts again. Now the phone's stuck on the samsung screen again. I can still access download mode and still access recovery (stock). When I access stock recovery it says "failed to mount /data (stale NFS file handle).... can't mount /data (stale NFS file handle)... E: failed to mount /data (stale NFS file handle).
Now what?... What can I do to fix this?
**EDIT**: Just did format on /data on stock recovery and it seems to have booted... False alert guys. Soft bricked, but nothing else.
Did you try a factory reset in stock recovery?

Did you try factory restore / reset in recovery?
Sorry, I forgot to update. The second I posted this I tried to go into the recovery and do a stock wipe. it worked. Thanks for the tip regardless!
I wonder why stock recovery was able to fix it, but TWRP wasn't? I did /data wipes on both recoveries...

Odining the PIT file is a bad idea. At best, it will not work, at worst, it will cause a hard brick
A. Regardless of what anyone has said or what ODIN reports, there is no evidence that the PIT files that are pulled from AT&T phones work on any other device than the one it was originally pulled from. Signing issues are to blame.
and
B. Messing with PIT files can hard brick a phone that was only soft bricked. PIT files (when they work) must be accompanied by a firmware files or else no data will be on the phone.

It sounds like to me you need to do a lot more reading and learning before you do anything else. It has been a well known fact, and widely discussed in the AT&T S4 forums that a factory reset needs to be done after flashing firmware in ODIN in order for the previous data to be wiped from the phone and for it to boot up again.

Ah, I never had to use ODIN on the S4 before. Didn't know that. On my S2 I didn't have to wipe after flashing via ODIN.
Good to know, anyway. Thanks.

I had to do a stock reset recovery the other day for something like this. Probably just left over files from previous stopping it from booting.

Sorry I learned something new today. Back in the infuse 4g days whenever I'd odined back to stock I always used the pit. I was under the influence that set everything up the way it came stock. Hope to see some of your work coming to sthe s4. Maybe you help the sense port going on in the international thread lol. Not trying to add work to ur day but I OK know if u, jt, and entropy can bring ICS to a out dated phone u might have the skills to ad your 2 cent.

I had to Odin to stock the first time two days agao but mine booted and I only had stock recovery. When it started up the ROM everything was crashing and that's what fixed it. Glad you fixed it though.

Pretty much got the same problem. Seems that somehow my device encrypted itself and since I didn't know...I don't have a password to give it. So I got a encrypted device that can't be decrypted, thus, I can't format, install, wipe, etc. Not sure if you got the same, but mine is about the same symptoms.
But is it ok to flash "I337UCUAMDB_I337ATTAMDB_I337UCUAMDB_HOME.tar.md5" on mine? Kinda confused with all this MDL, MDB, and MF3 stuff. Mine was an MDL. So is flashing MDB stock ok anyway? Or should I find the stock for MDL?
EDIT: Just flashed MDL stock anyway. Worked fine and now I'm starting from scratch. No more problems so far. I might stay away from TWRP for a bit now though. Surprised there isn't a guide or warning for this problem though.

The PW TWRP asks for? IT's just TWRP, if I remember correctly.
I successfully rooted and modded my Note 3 to run CyanogenMod 11-20140916-SNAPSHOT-M10-hlte. Since that time there have been 2 updates (M11 and M12).
I have downloaded and attempted to update both by using ROM Manager as well as the Update feature in the Settings Menu. Whenever I try to do this, I get the phone's opening splash screen along following messages:
RECOVERY BOOTING ...
RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit : recovery
The phone then reboots and returns to this screen.
The only thing I can do is pull the battery, reinsert it, then perform the Volume Down + Home + Power reboot then press Volume Down to force the reboot back to normal.
Did I screw up something when I rooted my phone that is preventing the updates from processing, or am I stuck with manual updates from here on out. If that is the case, what do I need to do to make that happen?
Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?
I am bumping this in hopes to get an answer. I am getting really sick of the instability and want to get the newest ROM flashed or, if that's not possible, flash the stock ROM back on the phone.
Odin a recovery like twrp after the odin is done shut down the phone . press volume up +power+home to get back in recovery . from here flash the cm ROM.

Lol and if you don't know what Odin is than you shouldn't be messing with your phone..
Do a clean flash and it will be good...factory reset+wipe cache and dalvik....

Yeah, I had to Odin TWRP on there. Now, I just need to figure out which CM build to use, because there's only nightlies for my specific model (T-Mobile), while there are snapshots of the base model.
I'm welcome to trying other ROMS, but CM is what I am most accustomed to.

Well, I have tried several different mods and keep getting the same error in TWRP:
E:Unable to open ZIP file
Error flashing zip <filename.zip>
Updating partition details ...
Ideas/suggestions? I'm comfortable enough with Odin now to the point that I can flash a ROM that way, if necessary.

Do read before you post. OP couldn't even access his recovery.

First of all, why is it called filename.zip? Put the CM .zip file to internal or external SD card (latter preferred if you have one) and then flash it directly from there after wiping (I wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache).

why do you propose him to flash CM11 if he can't get recovery mode????

I used <filename.zip> as a generic marker, as I have tried several different ROMs with the same outcome. As I stated in a previous reply, I was able to flash TWRP using Odin without issue. I have even re-flashed it several times since getting the aforementioned error, thinking something wasn't working.

I don't have an external SD Card on hand at the moment, otherwise I would try that.

Please keep an eye on the topic. You can see that he solved the issue (after your and before my post) with accessing recovery, thereby we have moved on to solve his next problem - flashing the ROM.

Re-download the .zip file and place it on the internal storage then. Do MD5 check also before moving, seems like the zip file was corrupted (faulty download?) when you tried to flash it.
