So I had to RMA my Nexus 6P that I had Rooted + Elemental X Kernel + TWRP + Xposed + Gravity Box -> if I do a nandroid backup will I be able to just restore it onto my replacement Nexus 6P after I root and flash TWRP?
I went through a lot of work rooting and customizing it and although I'd be willing to do it again, I'm hoping it's much simpler than that.
I asked this question on Reddit and I didn't get many replies but one person did say that it's possible if I "rename the serial number inside twrp folder to the one in the new phone." But I wanted to see what the experts here at XDA have to say because my replacement phone should be here tomorrow morning. I've also never looked inside a Nandroid folder and don't know where I'd find the serial of my phone.
Thank you!
Just reflash factory then boot back up make sure it boots then relock bootloader
Edit : sorry read that wrong

Its never a good idea trying to restore an entire image. But it can be done. Its best to manually root & reinstall a fresh image, then use nandroid to restore apps & associated data. Atleast that way, you can make sure there are no errors.

Hey everyone,
I'm pretty new to Android and purchased a Nexus 7 not too long ago and have recently discovered a dead pixel on it. It drives me crazy enough for me to take it back to Best Buy and do an exchange which shouldn't be a problem.
My only concern is performing a complete backup of my current device (Apps, Settings, Maybe even my widgets/home screens), do the in-store exchange, and then do a complete restore on my new Nexus 7.
I am savvy enough to root the device so I have no issue using any community created apps to perform this.
I see a few threads regarding this but I am unsure if they are the correct ones.
Guide Backing up my Nexus 7 from total loss
Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V2.0.0 Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, CWM, Flash + MUCH MORE
It seems like the Google Nexus 7 toolkit is what I need but I'd like to confirm what the easiest and correct route is.
You are right, the second link Google Nexus 7 Toolkit is what you need, its pretty simple just follow the instructions given.
You can do nandroid backup which backs up pretty much everything system + user apps and save it on your pc.
Thank you! The full NANDROID backup worked.
Another question for anyone. I'm not receiving the 4.1.2 update on my device but when I did a factory reset, I got the update right away. Is this because my Nexus is rooted? I have the stock ROM. All I had done was root the device but I am not receiving the update after doing my NANDROID restore.
I am receiving a replacement N4 shortly, because the rubber band/border on mine somehow started bending or bowing out away from the phone. I am wondering what the best and fastest way to get my current setup to the new phone. Im assuming Nandroid should be best, but I would like to hear what the community has to say!

Thanks for the suggestion. I was hoping to be able to restore my apps, data, and CM10.1 ROM with settings all at once, that is why I was thinking nandroid. This carbon app is definitely nice but still seems like it would take too long. I want to root my new device, install CWM recovery, and get right back to where I am. If nandroid doesnt work i will use this.
How can I grab my nandroids off of my device?

Yeah in your case a nandroid would be the way to go. However I would recommend getting the new radio and bootloader from 4.2.2 on your new phone first.
Your nandroid will be located in /data/media/ then whichever folder correlates with your recovery. Clockworkmod or twrp.

so would you suggest that I restore from my nandroid then upgrade my radio and bootloader? I should probably be able to find them on xda somewhere right? (instead of having to pull them off phone)
also , what would be the best way to get to the /data/media part of my phone since it isnt supported with Android File Transfer (im on mac)?
and it has been such a long time since i have needed to do a nandroid, does it include what is on my External Storage part of phone (the part that you can access with AFT)? Or will I have to save that stuff to my comp seperately, and then transfer to new phone?
My apologies if this has been covered. I've successfully rooted and unlocked the bootloader. I've tried my best to do a lot of reading including going through item by item in the xda wiki glossary but I'm still a little confused/want clarification before I actually do anything with my phone.
My goals are:
1) To create a full .img backup of my current system so I can always go back to it if needed/worst case scenario
2) Create a list of all my installed apps. Backup a few select apps that contain data within them that does not get backed up in the cloud or appear in a copyable source anywhere when i browse the phone directories (an app called Pattrn specifically that stores favorited background images..)
3) wipe/clear the my current incarnation of kitkat and re-install it 'fresh' (possibly without the bloat?), then reload desired apps.
4) create a backup .img of this new instance.
-----------------
I'm generally pretty quick to learn technical content but I've honestly tried to fully grok the steps for the last two weeks and haven't gotten there/understand enough to be confident to do what I think I need to do.
can take this to PM if anyone has some patience to work with me. Gladly donate to any app you make or paypal a few bucks if you can help walk me through this..
My understanding is that I need to get TWRP or CWM installed in order to get a custom recovery (as opposed to a stock recovery process)---which will allow me to do step 3. But even getting TWRP going I'm confused..
Thanks

can't help with everything..but with custom recovery..the easiest way is download flashify from play store and flash recovery image with itfrom here http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/ you have a Razr M on kitkat use this one http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img
copy it to sdcard or internal storage...open flashify and select recovery image then choose the downloaded file..flash it and restart

Well, with TWRP, there is an option to back up your current system, data, and boot image.
So, let's say you make a backup your stock kitkat rom, you can wipe that, install a compatible rom. And if that fails or you do not like it, you can boot back into TWRP and restore the backup you made with the restore option.
I'm not too sure what you are asking about your apps, but with titanium backup, you can backup any app + their current data. For example, lets say you backup your favorite browser and it has everything just the way you want it, you can back it up with titanium backup, flash your rom, and restore it with titanium backup.
Not sure if that was what you were asking with #2, but if you have another question, ask away. I'm on a road trip so I have plenty of time.

thank you for your fast response, I appreciate it. I can do this--can you just clarify for me to define specifically what 'custom recovery' means?
I might be over-thinking it but I'm still trying to actually understand what custom recovery means-I assume it is in contrast to the current recovery which is still whatever shipped with the phone from verizon/motorola? So the above .img is a kitkat-base recovery (possibly without verizon bloat?)
Thanks

Thank you too for your response!
So yes, I would like to use TWRP for that--make a backup of my current stock rom in all aspects, then start with a fresh instance. Does doing the step the above poster linked basically get TWRP installed as a custom recovery---which then gives me the options to create those backups in the bootloader menu? again sorry for my confusion, I've read the guides and how-to but I'm getting tripped up on some of the lingo/definitions.
On #2 Yes, that is basically what I wanted--I've got titanium backup installed and have backed up a few of these programs to my SD card already. Only have a handful of programs that have any customization that I care to retain.

you can do diff things like poppers162 mentioned you can backup ur entire rom with it...its very easy to flash nd very user friendly to navigate..no the above is a recovery img...you can boot ur phone into it once you flash it..then from there you can backup ur stock rom..and install/flash custom roms with bloat removed..
or another option is just freeze the apps you don't want with titanium backup..its almost as effective as uninstalling
Okay.. I've got TWRP going and creating a backup of my current system onto an external SD card. .. progress.
I've already backed up everything I desired in titanium.
Next up doing a 'clean' start in kitkat--or a slightly improved version. I realize at this point maybe things become more subjective to people's preferences.. I'm not looking to go to CM. I found some stock or a very-nearly-stock version of kitkat I can now 'start' fresh with--the google play edition? or do I need to download "Android 4.4.2 Blur_Version.183.46.10.XT907.Verizon.en.US"? I guess I need some more help at this point. Verizon is my carrier..
Thanks--do appreciate the help! :good:

success..95% or so
wanted to follow up here.. some of the terms finally clicked in my mind to understand the functions of recovery/fastboot/bootloader/flashing..etc. I wonder if there is a flow-chart type diagram available out there--that type of thing would have really helped to understand--being able to visualize where these different aspects interact and where files etc line up with them.
Short version: successfully running GPE rom smoothly and enjoyably on a 'clean' system.
needless to say I used TWRP to backup my system. And Titanium for specific apps. Used rsdlite to flash the GPE rom from the forum here. Then I factor reset the rom, then I think I formatted internal storage space?? --at that juncture I was a little less clear what the specific sequence should have been to 'start fresh'. Should I have factory reset my device before flashing the rom? Or maybe it really doesn't matter.
Thanks for everyone's help. One thing that didn't migrate over through gcloud backups--embedded images in text msging program. relatively small loss though
cheers
I received a replacement S5 today because my previous phone had a screen defect. I was running a custom rom through safestrap. When I did the initial install of safestrap I did a stock rom backup. I then loaded my custom rom on the phone and had it fully configured the way I like it. Before I sent my phone off for replacement I did a backup of my custom rom and saved it on my external sd memory card.
Flash forward to the new phone. I root it, install safestrap, boot into recovery and go to restore and my custom rom backup is not listed there as an option to restore to. Is there something additional I need to do to allow this new phone to restore that previous backup? Are the backups some how tagged to only work on a specific serial number or something?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm new to safestrap so hopefully its something simple I'm missing within the settings. If I go to the internal file manager within safestrap I can browse to my backup so I know its there and visible on the memory card, it just will not show up as an option to restore from when I access that menu within safestrap.
Thanks
Update - I was able to fix it. For anyone else that may run into this issue all I did was create a new nandroid backup of my new phone and it created a new folder that safestrap was referencing for this specific phone. I then copied the folder of my previous backup from my broken phone to the new folder for my new phone and safestrap was able to see the backup. I selected it and installed it and all is golden and back to normal on my new handset.
Wow.....That is super lame of SafeStrap! I just stumbled upon this thread while searching for a solution to this issue. I was stumped. Thanks a BUNCH! Really freaking stupid that this happens though. Should be better documented.

Hashcode was just trying to save some poor fools phone. Someone would try and restore the backup from the wrong firmware onto their phone and blame him.
I accidentally ruined my LG G PAD F7.0 and
am stuck in a Google Play Services Error loop on my tablet

The Tablet was rooted but i believe the OS/Google Play services is damaged because of an app that wasn't supposed to be disabled that what im assuming....
What i wanna know is it possible someone can make a flash-able dump of their tablet from someone elses same model and if i can use it to restore this tablet back to working condition and if so how??
I also would like to know if any of the sites are the proper recovery files for this tablet:

Ok bro, first thing you need is the LG Drivers which you can get here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/g3...Ver_3.11.3.exe
Next you need the LG Flash Tool which you can get here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/fw..._Tool_2014.zip
Then you need the stock rom which you can get from the sources you found or you can even just google it. Everything is pretty self explanatory. Make sure you're tablet is in d/l mode. If you have any more questions just ask. Good luck!!!

Did you get your stock ROM yet. I can pull it off one of mine if you still need it., I got two of them from Sprint just to save the activation fees on 3 other phones. I need to root them because they are way to slow. The hardware is way too small. Anyways, as soon as I figure out how to root them I can do a nan droid off the one I have never used so I won't even have to factory reset first. If you give me the steps you did to root yours it will save me time. How did you brick yours?

Extracting a nan droid is easy enough. It is what you should have done as soon as you installed a recovery. t's just a back up. I need to use the same recovery you installed so it works on yours. After I back it up I will send you a link. You put it on your card and then restore from your recovery. It is key to always back up your firmware before you modify anything. If I make a back with the device that I haven't used it will be stock for you. I've never rooted a LG so I'm still looking for the method. I can compress it to a TAR if you want to flash it odin (or whatever is used for LG) but it is easiest just to install it as a restore. You can still power your device on to the recovery can't you?
I didnt even get to the recovery part I rooted and try to reboot after installing supers u from King root and been looping ever since

Getting it out of the boot loop is usefully not all that difficult. Did you try wiping the Dalvik and the cache? That will probably do it. If not what you need is the boot or kernel. Find the stock or the custom kernel and install it then wipe dalvik and cache.
I think i need the boot.img or kernal and I can't find either anywhere I've looked and I've tried factory reset and nothing I have the stock recovery so j can't wipe dalvik

A factory reset will wipe the dalvik. I will see what I can find tomorrow. When I get mine rooted you can use the boot image from my back up if I can't find one elsewhere. It's best to install a custom recovery. If your wanting the option to return to stock a good app is flashily. You can back up the boot loader and the kernel before you install a recovery and then use it to flash it back when you want to. It will even back it up to drop box so it doesn't get lost.
What method did you use to root?
I used king root and I'm no rookie to the rooting Android thing I've been doin it for years I just can't find a recovery to flash or anything other then King root to root it and if i could get it to go past the splash screen I'd be able to fix it but I can't get it passed there unless I find those files
