Hello! New to the forums. Excuse me if this is asked before. Well, my Samsung S5's screen becomes hot when i surf for say 10 minutes or so. The surfing usually is Facebook(app), Instagram(app), Whatsapp and some web page search on chrome.
While my screen becomes hot, the back side of phone seems normal. By normal i mean warm! No issues with the back though! I've cleared the cache by wipe partition cache. Also i did a reset (delete and restore to factory settings). But it works good for few hours or maybe more. And again it behaves the same.
Second part, While using the mentioned apps above, i listen to music. First i used to listen by default 'Music' player. Then switched to JetAudio presuming that default player is the culprit. So whenever i listen to music be it any player, it crashes. And i have to clear the RAM or close apps so that i can listen it again. But even after doing this it crashes after 30 minutes or an hour. I don't know if this is to be happened in this 2014 Flagship phone. Throw some light on me as i'm using android for the first time who used to use Symbian before.
Thanks.
No one to my rescue?
Am I on the wrong platform? Anyways I installed Stellio player and the issue of music player crashing is solved if anyone comes across this issue can install a third party music player (Stellio or poweramp). But the heating problem still persists.
When you surf, are you connected on a Wi-Fi network or are you using your mobile data?
For your music player, I'm glad you found a fix. However it is odd that the stock music player will crash and that you have to use a third-party player for doing such simple task. I never had the problem, but nevertheless it's good to hear you've fixed the problem yourself.

I'm mostly on home WiFi while surfing the internet.
And even after re-installing the firmware from the service centre the stock music player or Google Play both crashes abruptly! But Anyways I didn't like either of the players.

Stock ROM, Yes Lollipop the latest release.
I might say the heating issue is because your phone is running Lollipop. The heat issue is more prominent than on KitKat due to the fact that the UI is now all white, unlike in KitKat which is all dark. More white or colored pixel means more light emitted and more light means more power which is later transformed into heat.

The heat issue existed since the days of S4 and on S5 running KitKat but the difference is that KitKat doesn't cause that much heat due to the fact that the UI is dark all over, lessening the power the screen has to draw to the display.

I've been using dark wallpapers and dark themes wherever possible. Also i've reduced the screen brightness to the lower side. Let's see how it behaves.

i m using note from over 1 month now and i think its slower than other phones, i have used sgs2 before this. my touch stops responding sometimes while browsing or playing music.also 1 error i have experienced a lot is when i play music directly from folder. My firmware is up to date. have you experienced the same or is it just me?
ive only had the phone a few days but i cant say i have seen it slow down, only time was after flashing the kl7 stock rom as it needed a few reboots to bed in
i just put la1 on and now it seems faster than before
Are you on LA1?
Use LA1 with new abyss 3.1 test kernel. This thing flies and no overheating of any sort.

My note is faster than the S2 aside from using the pinch to zoom out on the app drawer and home screen. So idk probably a defective unit? or a defective ram module?
sorry folks, i am noob, so i ll probably have to look on forum to find out what you guys are talking about. i havent rooted my phone yet. but now i am willing to. i will surely look into it this weekend. any specific tutorials you guys wanna direct me to for rooting?

Try LA1 from here.
I'm not rooted either.
Just stock LA1.
I use rhapsody rom and abyss 3.1 test and my note is very fast! I have some problem with battery drain but I think next kernel will solve this issue
(stock phone unrooted) mine sometimes freezes but most times is ok. had an episode or two of crashing restarting without being able to do anything but now ok, some force closures in stock video player, stock file manager sometimes takes ages processing everytime i move into different folders. other video players and file managers are ok. stock task manager shows total ram at about 800mb of which about 644mb is being used most times or there abouts. thought the phone had 1gb where is the missing 200mb?? any clues.
I do not have a note, but going back to stock may fix your problem (or wiping dalvik and regular cache should fix this). After a while a rom can just get "clogged" up, which most do (cm7 takes longer usually). Clearing these or a whole different rom should fix this.
If you havcpower saving on can make a difference. On one stock ROM it lowered my cpu thresholds significantly

I've been having this issue for a while, occasionally the phone would lag/stutter when simply swiping through home screens or the apps drawer (With no applications open) it would still run games and apps perfectly smooth though. Only way to fix the lag is to turn wi-fi off and back on, restart the phone, or wait for the lag to go away. Any thoughts on this? has anyone been experiencing this? I tried searching the forum, but couldn't find anyone experiencing this.
Here is a video I uploaded:
you might be better off trying a factory reset tbh. this hasnt been a vocalized issue
Do you have a constant wifi connection during the lag?
On my xperia arc it connects and immidatly disconnects again and because of this the lag appears..

Did a factory reset but lag still occurred occasionally.
If you have a Google Play Music widget on your home screen, that may be the cause of the occasional lag. I removed the widget and so far no lag.
This is normal for an Android phone regardless of clockspeed, number of cores or GPU power.

Never had this issue with my previous devices and others seem to be not having this issue, so I don't think it is normal for an Android to behave this way.
I'll add my voice to this thread.
I've had mine since the weekend. Yesterday night, it started stuttering, in exactly the way you said. I restarted, it went away for a bit, then came back. I tried killing all running applications, made no difference. Another restart fixed it and its smooth as it was again.
Wonder if it is the WiFi causing it?
Incidentally, I was reading some custom kernels fixed the problem for some, but I'd rather not get back into all that nonsense (I've had enough flashing ROMs to last a lifetime thus far).

So your phone is not rooted and you haven't flashed anything on it? Maybe you can remember when this started and you install some app , maybe it causes this? If so this is not normal! go to the thread dediacated to factory re-flash , this is the only option then

Phone is not rooted or flashed. Might be an issue with one of the apps but it would be very hard to isolate the issue. I have requested a replacement device from Google since I couldn't figure out the cause of it.
Mine does stutter ocasionally but thought that is normal... In xda-app it stutter on almost every single scroll.

It has no problems running apps, perfectly smooth, no lag at all. The stutter only occurs occasionally when simply scrolling through the home screen or app drawer.
It's normal because it's Android.
Android lags. And will forever. It lagged on the G1, it lags on the N4. It will lag on the N5.
It will lag until Google decides to fix Android.
All the people who claim that their device doesn't lag are lying. Simple as that.
When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49702&#makechanges
I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down
Ditto only happened once in the first week of using and has never happened again

The device was a little hot but not as hot as when in gaming and in gaming it never reboots.
Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Hi there,
I am currently on 10.4.B.0.569 india generic firmware on SGP321. My first impression is that the 4.3 rom is awesome! Project butter is really doing their job pretty well. However, I still found a couple of bugs; some of them are pretty annoying. And I am not really sure if everyone has the same problems or if i am the only one who has them. Those bugs are listed below:
1. Black Wallpaper: it appears for a few second after playing some heavy games or a extensive use of facebook app or web browser. It is back to normal in a matter of seconds but it is pretty annoying.
2. App icon is out off the folder: trying to apply the new theme and the problem appear, but after a few reboots it was back to normal.
3. Video playback seem to not working properly: I try to play some 720p or 1080p videos and it skips a few frame. It looks pretty laggish. It does not happen to every 720p videos, but i usually have that problem with mkv dvdrip format 23.97fps which was fine in 4.2.2. Switching to S/W mode in MX player seem to fix the problem.
4. Battery life: seem to consume a little more than it used to in 4.2.2. I usually get 8-9h of screen on. In 4.2.2, i got around 8-10h. Amazingly, in 4.1.2 i got up to 11h of video playback.
5. Screen flickering from times to times
That's all I found so far. Tell me if u have the same problems and feel free to add more.
Have a nice day!

As far as i understood shutdown time depends on a number of programs loaded in memory (not installed but running at the moment) and on unmounting of SD-card. Cause it takes some time to unload them properly, unmount partitions, sd and then shut down.

I recently bought a SGP311 and went from 4.1.2 straight to 4.3. Even though my tablet was new, I did a factory reset anyway while installing the new android. The tablet took a minute to shut down. Minor annoyance really. But my first impression was that it hanged on shutdown.
That said, I returned that tablet b/c of a loose back. I got a brand new one and have kept it on 4.1.2 for now until I see problems are being addressed. Most notably battery life and HD video issues.
This is a very good thread for me to track issues. Thank-you OP for this thread.
And in 4.3, how do you get the small small apps as available in 4.1.2? Im still trying to learn my ropes on the tablet, but as I have returned the updated tablet, I'd like to know this is possible.

Hi everyone,
My note 4 seems to start lagging recently after I play games on it for a while. When I close the game, the phone itself lags as well. It's very obvious too when I'm just scrolling through my drawer. Has anyone experienced this? The few times I noticed the lag was also when my battery was low, <25% and I thought it may have been power saving mode. However I checked and power saving mode was off. Also when I use the facebook app any anytime, it has a scroll lag. I noticed that too when I'm browsing on certain sites (ie; XDA).
I tried factory reset and that did not fix the issue and I have the phone too long to exchange/refund

I never experienced any lag using stock launcher!, i want to stay my phone the way i first bought it.

I'm already using nova. I tired stock browser but sites like XDA still lags when I scroll. Also when I game for a while, the game will start to lag. When I exit to home screen the phone itself lags too! I have to clear the ram for the phone to go back to normal. The weird thing is, the ram was only 2.22gb/2.72gb, it's not even close to max!
Stop clearing your ram now
Try uninstall some background app like facebook and see the effect
Hm interesting, after I last cleared my ram. I've been gaming for 2hrs straight and 0 lag... I've swapped back and forth from game to homescreen to whatsapp etc and no lag at all... Only thing different is I'm charging my phone at the same time. Think charging has something to do with it?

Did a quick antutu benchmark to see whats up and i got 49000 on antutu without flight mode on. What do you think? Benchmarks say my phone should handle them with ease but thats not the case. Anyone with a solution? I already disabled many samsung and google apps. Lag is evident only in games.

Hm interesting, after I last cleared my ram. I've been gaming for 2hrs straight and 0 lag... I've swapped back and forth from game to homescreen to whatsapp etc and no lag at all... Only thing different is I'm charging my phone at the same time. Think charging has something to do with it?

You're not using Power Saver, are you?
My note's benchmark seemed normal and I play Clash of Clans as well and it seems okay. The game I play most often is Summoners War and that is what's causing the lag. Come to think of it, I think I had an issue with the lag on my Nexus 5 as well but I might have chalked it up to the phone being old so when this happen on my brand new note 4, it raised a red flag. But still, I'm still confused why the game would lag my phone even thought it there's plenty of memory available.

Nope, confirm that power saving is not on.

I just tried clash of clans on my brothers s5. Turns out the stuttering is even worse. Im testing this by zooming in on the base and scrolling rapidly back and forth on a canon for example. I will test this on my nexus 4.i too thought coming to a phone as powerful as the note 4 i shouldnt see any stutters but if its happening on an s5 then i guess its not a hardware issue on my phone but rather an android thing? Tested this also on my iphone 6 with no stutters at all.

Nevermind there is definitly something wrong with my phone as clash of clans looks like its being played on a 5 year old phone.way to many stutters.

I was having the same problem, so believe it or not, the way I stopped it was going into application manager and disabling S Health. I don't know how or why, but this stopped all the lag. After installing Ktoonez kernel, I thought maybe I could turn it back on, but when I did, I started getting the same lag again. I hope this helps because I know it is frustrating

I second Keith's recommendation. My 2-day-old, rooted Note 4 was lagging and was particularly noticeable when scrolling through some web pages or content in Flipboard. But it lagged in other places as well. Also stuttered or paused when playing podcasts. I tried installing Nova Launcher, I tried removing Wanam Xposed, and some other things but it finally went away when I started to disable various Samsung bloatware. The success occurred after I disabled SHealth and some other things (I just happened to do a few all at the same time). I suspect SHealth was the culprit because it was probably running in the background all the time, trying to track my step count.
I ended up keeping Nova Launcher since I gives me some useful customizations, and I love Wanam + Xposed, partly because it lets me get rid of Samsung's Search menu item that always used to appear in my notifications shade.
It's been over a week, now, and no more lag / stutter. Absolutely loving the phone, now.
I haven't gone back to re-enable some of the bloatware in order to confirm that SHealth was the culprit because, quite frankly, I have no interest in the stuff I disabled, anyway.
I have also disabled S health but I never had a problem with Clash of Clans when even I had S health Enabled.. whereas the other game I play (Summoners War) it always start to lag after an hr+ of gaming.
I already disabled s health through the app drawer but that does not solve the problem. Coc will run fine for a few mins and then start to stutter like its not optimized. To test for hardware issues i installed dead trigger 2 and injustice gods among us and they absolutely fly. The problem seems to be with coc. I am using an exynos note 4 on stock rom stock kernel. Any thoughts?

return your phone
when your phone starts to stutter after some time playing games, it might be thermal throttling. depending on the game you can notice it more or less.
