Hello,
I recently had to trade in my old Galaxy S5 (Verizon) which was damaged beyond repair and received a newer upgraded model. I tried rooting it but was unable to get it to boot so I had to put it back on 5.0. After reading through some content I've learned that my phone may not be rootable, I'm hoping I'm wrong and there is a way to do it and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Model: SM-G900V
Android Version: 5.0
Baseband: G900VVRU2BOG5
Build: LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOG5
I've read that BOG5 cant be rooted, but stumbled across this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/vzwstock-based-tw-rom-t3178953
Can anyone tell me what that is and if I can install it on my phone to allow root?
Thanks
BOG5 cannot be rooted. In order to flash that ROM you linked, you have to be rooted first. So you are stuck.

Verizon and I believe AT&T has locked bootloaders, which prevents their smartphones from gaining root.
It's really a shame.
You're only solution is to try trading it online for another Galaxy S5.
For example, I have a Canadian Galaxy S5 Model: SM-G900W8, which doesn't have a locked bootloader, easy to unlock, so I can now use any (GSM) SIM card.
Check which US mobile carriers would would on an unlocked S5, then root away.
I know (an unlocked) Canadian S5 works on AT&T & T-Mobile for sure.
Verizon is like Wind Mobile ( using UMTS and HSPA+ 3G mobile networks )
Good luck.

I've just recently bought this S4 off my friend
The phone was bought in canada, and sent to Denmark for my friend's brother to use
and he now sent it back to me (Canada) because my S3 has died on me.
It is an GS4 i337m VLUFNE1
It is on official firmware 4.4.2
I want to root it to enable AWS to use it with Wind mobile
I assume the phone is unlocked because it was used in Denmark
Please direct me to a thread that will be able to root this model
I have looked at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293800
but I'm nervous to follow the method because there is a discussion about unlocked and locked bootloaders, and i'm not sure
if this method will work for mine.
Your help is appreciated.
There is no carrier logo on the back of the phone either, if that helps.
Did you check if towelroot works? Its just running an app.
I'm new to rooting ATT phones, my wife just go a free ATT S4 I337UCUFNC1 from a friend and I want to root, convert it from ATT to T-Mobile phone then unlocking it.
The phone doesn’t have a sim yet but I'm planning on putting my wife's present T-mobile sim in there.
I'm very familiar with the T-mobile Samsung S4 version.
I've read that I need a safestrap after root?
Can I update to 4.4.4?
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Follow this to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56453100. To run on tmobile you'll have to sim unlock it. Try regionally away
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46187852
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
To Sim unlock, flash the MF3 modem in safestrap recovery and then run regionlockaway app.
Thanks alot, I was able to boot in Safestrap Recovery but after I rebooted from that and then tried to reboot back into Recovery Safestrap FC'ed. I tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it but is FC'ed again, dunno what's it going on.
How do I get back into Recovery if Safestrap is FC'ing? (I'm trying to flash the MF3 modem)
NVM, Got back into recover, flashed the modem now and used Region SimLock, I took my T-Mobile sim and put it in the AT&T phone and it works.
Now I will try to convert it from AT&T to a T-Mobile Phone using : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/convert-i337-to-m919-wifi-caling-t2896719
Quick Question
If I use this method to convert from a AT&T to T-Mobile will I loose the Unlock Sim?
Would I be able to use Region SimLock again with the being updated to 4.4.4?
Got everything going... completed!
Thanks!
I just brought a S5 Verizon off craiglist and in need of some help. Stepping back in to the samsung modding is a bit overwhelming now. Seem like a lot has changed.
The guy who sold it me the phone said he had a cricket store flashed the rom so he can use it on metroPCS. I use T-Mobile so i put in the sim and everything seem to work. I had to manually program the APN for 4g data.
I want to update the phone to lollipop rom so i found a site (http://www.galaxys5update.com/galaxy-s5-stock-firmware/) with all the stock rom. Upon looking up the current build number of the rom on the phone it is KTU84P.G900VVRU1ANK2. Comparing the G900VVRU1ANK2 with the stock firmware site above, the current rom on the phone is Verizon. So the rom is Verizon but still work with Tmobile sim/network? This is kind of confusing.
So to update to lollipop, do i download the lollipop version of Verizon or TMobile? I havent been in the samsung scene since the Vibrant so hopefully you guy can clarify how to update the phone. Thanks.
Here are the information about the current rom (stock i think):
Phone name: samsung-sm-G900
Model number: SM-G900V
Android 4.4.4
Baseband: G900VVRU1ANK2
Build number: KTU84P.G900VVRU1ANK2
Hardware version: G900V.05
Gee - I would like an answer to this too.

You must download the firmware for Verizon.
So only Verizon roms still for s5? No custom carrier roms or universal type roms are available to change carrier?

If the phone is unlocked you can use it with a SIM card of another carrier, but you can't install a ROM of another carrier.
I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 (Unlocked) and I am currently using it on Cricket wireless. The phone is currently running on Android 4.4.3 and I would like to update the same to Lollipop. Samsung Galaxy S4 got Lollipop rolled out by AT&T recently but I was not able to get the same since I switched carriers.
Now what is the best way to update the phone. If possible I don't want to root the phone. I went to best buy local store but they were not able to do the same as they said the phone is unlocked. Please let me know how I can update my phone to the latest version. It will be really helpful if someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks all in advance for the help.
Will putting a AT&T sim in my phone help with the OTA? In the sense if I get an AT&T sim card from someone or purchase one and put it in to my phone will that help with the OTA? I am not sure if this phone was unlocked by AT&T.
I was able to successfully install the updates on my phone. I was able to downgrade my phone by installing stock 4.4.2 using ODIN and then was able to upgrade my device to 4.4.4 first and then update to 5.0.1 via OTA. It was an easy process and the instructions in the ODIN thread was really helpful.
Similar situation
I too have an unlocked SGH-I337 that is unlocked from AT&T and I'm using it on T-Mobile. How did you perform the Lollipop update without an AT&T SIM? I took mine to the Samsung experience at Best Buy and they weren't able to do it via Kies and they believe it's because it's unlocked. Nothing else has been done to it, just the AT&T unlock so that I could switch carriers.
Thanks in advance,
Charlotte
Hi,
I want to buy a Note 4 and absolutely need root on it. I just found some ugly stuff about rooting it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-att/help/root-samsung-sm-n910a-5-1-1-build-t3355869

forgot to tell you the two U.S. carriers that put locks on their bootloaders is AT&T and VERIZON so i wouldnt recommend root unless you unlock bootloader or else your phone will continueously stay in boot mode without letting you exit. that i believe is a bootloop good luck
-----------------------
Since I can chose which one I buy, I obviously want to get the one that can be rooted. It does not have to be easy, I have used odin in the past, no problem. There are quite a few versions out there though, and I'm a little confused which ones will work. Looks to me like that N910A is out and root pretty much impossible.
I have my eyes on the canada version: N910W8
What about the T-mobile version?
Thanks,
Markus

AT&T and Verizon should be avoided, otherwise you can just flash super-su via odin.

910t is mod friendly. To root a 910t, you flash Odin and load SuperSU (systemless) as indicated above or flash a permissive kernal and system level root. It is also compatible with att network if that is your carrier. Just need to unlock it.
Thanks guys, that helps, I will go for a 910t then.

Bit of a noob, but I'm a bit confused. If I buy an "Unlocked" Verizon phone like the SM-N910V, would I be able to use any custom roms?
I was about to buy either the N910V (Verizon) or N910W8 (Verizon/North America)
Can't the Verizon & AT&T be rooted with Chainfire AutoRoot?

Only if you buy a developer edition verizon model and last time I checked they were upwards of around $800. Your best bet is W8 or T. I did all the research like you and ended up buying a T and have never been happier

(Unlocked means sim unlocked)
Bootloader Unlocked verizon phones can be flashed with a custom rom, and if you get a verizon phone, I suggest a Bootloader unlocked one. Verizon and AT&T phones with locked bootloaders can't be rooted with Chainfire. Chainfire should NOT be used on a phone with a locked bootloader because it flashes partitions and will most likely hard brick your phone. I would still sugest against a Bootloader non-unlocked Verizon or AT&T phone. Also using a custom recovery or odin to flash super-su has worked much better for me with a lot less less risk than Chainfire.
Whatever you decide upon dont get the EDGE. it needs special roms, and it wont work with gear VRs. i have the euro verison, and didnt have any problems rooting. cf-autoroot and done.
Really appreciate the responses guys. Especially for the clarification around Unlocking ("Unlocked means the bootloader").
I'll check out what custom ROMS work on the Verizon (910V).
Are there more ROMS for the 910W8's or the 910V's. Also if I go stock on the W8s, I would have to choose a Canadian carrier.
I'll definitely stay away from the EDGE, didn't really like it anyway

Careful there, usually 'unlocked' like on Swappa or similar means carrier unlocked, not boot loader unlocked.
