While following this unbrick guide by @netbuzz, there is a 808MiB zip file that is required that includes the tools needed, firmware, radio, recovery, user data and system images. With a slow internet connection, it takes quite long. Since I already had the stock files there was no point in re-downloading everything. Hence I've made a smaller 32MiB file that includes everything but the stock files.

I haven't yet tried to unbrick (corrupt firmware :/) my phone, so it may not even work. But as long as you copy the correct files to the extracted folder before trying (I think this list is complete: boot.img, cache.img, emmc_appsboot.mbn, logo.bin, NON-HLOS.bin, recovery.img, rpm.mbn, sbl1.mbn, sdi.mbn, static_nvbk.bin, system.img, tz.mbn, userdata[_64G.img/.img]), it should work as expected.
I hope this helps! The original full Color OS zip posted by netbuzz is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3i4Cdm8QYlLVWo3UTRYU1UxUHM/view
@Heisenberg if you think this is useful please add it to the Index thread.
(P.s. I forgot to remove boot.img and cache.img from the zip. Overwrite them with your ROM's files).

You're gonna need to give more info than that. What file is this (I've personally never heard of the ext4.win extension before; are you asking about an ext4 partition?) and why do you need it for your nexus 4?

Ext4.win is the backup file made by TWRP. Ext4 is the filesystem of the file (I assume) and .win is their extension. It may just be as easy as renaming it to .zip and opening it, kind of like a .apk

THX a lot
Re: [Q] Extract *ext4.win files ([A] They are '.tar' archives)
I arrived here from a google search for the same problem so I thought others might, too. Here is what I found:
Code:
# file data.ext4.win
data.ext4.win: POSIX tar archive (GNU)
# mkdir data
# cd data
# tar xf ../data.ext4.win
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
...
While this worked, I was surprised that 7Zip complained that it did not recognize the file type, even when I changed the name to 'data.tar'.
Long story short: TWRP '*.ext4.win' backup files appear to be '*.tar' UNIX "tape archives". I would hesitate to say "standard 'tar' files" only because I encountered some unexplained wrinkle. (7Zip usually doesn't have any trouble.)
I know this thread is a year old, but it's still relevant as there is not much information about this
On windows you can use tartool from here: https://tartool.codeplex.com/
Code:
tartool -x system.ext.win output_folder
better yet, http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidicsjbext/, gui ext4 extractor
Change extension from win to tar and open with winrar.
If on windows open the win file in 7Zip, Extract the .ext4 file, and then open the ext4 file with 7zip

System.ext4.win00x files are tar.
1. Concatenate multiple tar files into one file.
2. Use Extractor by Alexey71.
Here is RK3xxx_firmware_tools, works better than wendal tools.
It can depackage/repackage Rockchip update.img, system.img, boot.img & recovery.img
'h**p://***.multiupload.nl/M5CKMYFBSW'
Instructions to use
Split ROM file
1. Firmware Image Tools - Select Img
Select your ROM.img file eg. a rom made by lewy20041
Select Extract - It will extract the rom into: boot.img, kernel.img, recovery.img & system.img
Now you can replace the kernel.img(to get wifi working for a rom that is not for your device) or recovery.img.
Extracting System.img or Boot.img
2. Go to the System or Boot frame on the program and select 'Extract'.
The contents of the System.img in step 1 is now extracted to the 'temp' folder and you can edit the files.
- You can now edit build.prop file to tweak the rom or change default settings like the default language of the rom.
- You can also change the boot animation of the device by going to system/media/bootanimation.zip
- You can also add additional wifi adaptor files for your device by going to system/lib/modules and adding eg. 8188eu.ko wifi module. Remember to depmod -a in a terminal to apply changes.
When you are satisfied with your changes click 'Build' to put the files together again as an *.img file.
The files are stored as eg system_new.img in the programs main directory. Rename this file/files to eg system.img without the 'new' and copy it to the temp folder to replace the old file.
You can then click Build in the Firmware Image Tools frame at the top to make a complete *.img file again to flash to your device.
If you use Finless Bob Roms, click on 'Single tools' at the bottom to only modify one file at a time eg the system.img file.
The same usage can be applied as above as for a lewy20041 or stock rom.
This tool will help a lot of people that don't have custom roms for their devices to create their own one or use a different devices's rom that is almost identical to theirs and only replace the kernel to get wifi/bluetooth working.
This tool can also flash roms to your device.
Previously you needed linux to repackage a system.img file and couldn't depackage a boot.img or recovery.img easily.
Thanks to user SergioPoverony for putting this app together on 4pda forum.
Hope people find this useful.
Great, thanks. I'll give it a try.
sounds like this should be useful. i bought a minix x7 mini by accident. non mini roms run fine with the exception of wifi and bt

Thanks for posting this here! Exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you very much for this useful tool.
I use RK3xxx_firmware_tools 4.2.22.0.
Any firmware I try to Extract (your step 1 [Split ROM]) bring that same error:

Monster M7 HefferRom
Hey Guys. A buddy asked me to fix his M7 so i cooked up this little "rom" for it. This is the latest firmware from monster that gives you full nand storage for apps and whatnot. None of that seperate partition BS.
I went ahead and debloated this img of most of the preinstalled chinaware apps. There are a few remaining that can be disabled in settings>apps such as facebook, movie studio, skype, and mwidget. I didn't have enough time to find them all. Root is not included.
It has solid explorer, open camera(I left the stock cam as well), and nova launcher. Rename the file to update.img and place on external sd card. It will flash from internal but you'll only have about 1 GB total storage, so don't do that.
It definately seems a little snappier than bone stock.
Uploaded to my Drive, Enjoy.

Making Flashable ZIP Files, Converting IMG to TAR and TAR to ZIP
NO, the tools, methods below are not my work. I've just combined some useful info into 1 place.
Flashable ZIP Creator :
1. Download Flashable ZIP Creator tool from attachments. Extract it into a folder.
2. Open (don't extract) 'Template-for-non-auto-perm-fix-kernel_v1.1.zip' with WinRAR in this folder.
3. Drag the files you want to flash/copy to the device into a corresponding folder in this ZIP or /data/media/0/ for copying a file into the internal memory directory on the phone.
4. Set the compression method as Normal and hit OK.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
5. Move this zip file (Template-for-non-auto-perm-fix-kernel_v1.1.zip) which you just modified to \ZIP Auto Signer\put-zip-to-sign-here folder.
6. Run 'zip-auto-signer.bat' in the ZIP Auto Signer folder. Press any key.
7. Press 3 and Enter.
8. Your ZIP is signed! It's there in the finish folder. :highfive:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMG to TAR :
1. Download IMG to TAR tool from attachment. Extract it into a folder.
2. Copy your IMG file into this folder.
3. Rename it to - ' recovery.img ' .
4. Open Runme.bat .
5. Done! You have your recovery.tar ready in this folder, a file flashable via Odin. :highfive:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TAR to ZIP :
1. Open your TAR file with WinRAR and extract it.
2. Delete all files except system.IMG.ext4 & recovery.img.ext4 & boot.IMG.ext4 .
3. Remove .ext4 from their name if there were.
4. Now you should have system.img and recovery.img and boot.img.
5. Copy system.img and recovery.img and boot.img into the 'Odin to Recovery' folder (download attachment and extract).
6. Now you should have 'META-INF', 'System.img', 'Boot.img', 'Recovery.img' in this folder.
7. Make a ZIP file of this folder with WinRAR with the Compression Method as 'Normal'. :highfive:
first ever "easy to follow" guide that i have come across. not sure if this is gonna work but i will be trying this out. thank you :good:
QURepack is a new tool for boot.img unpack/repack. You do not need to run cmd and write anything to this. Just run the QURepack.exe and click unpack and repack button for this. This tool is very easy to use and will help you to do this in short time.

I'm sure it works. Because it's a GUI to the bootimg.exe tool (available for free from Github), which is a modification of the bootimg.py tool (available for free from another Github). The internet is full of "content gateways" where someone wastes their talent on building a do-nothing program instead of something useful, like a tool that allows easy repartitioning/editing of a mmcblk0.raw image.
bootimg.exe --unpack-bootimg boot.img

Sadly for some reason it requires the image being unpacked to be named "boot.img", when it's fully capable of unpacking any "ANDROID!" boot image for both Mediatek and Qualcomm.
I've used it to unpack boot and recovery for a Huawei Y536A1, boot factory laf recovery for a LGL16C, boot dfs dkernel recovery for an Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7". I've never seen it fail to unpack a boot image yet.

I readed the ROM from my phone (MTK6572) with MTK Droid tools and I made a backup of my ROM. I loaded it again in my phone and it works without problem. Now I'm trying to make changes to the ROM. Change the build.prop and install an apk. I use MTK Thai Developer Tools to unpack my system.img and I'm able to do it without problems. Afther make the changes I repack the file with the same tool and I get a file called system_ext4_new.img without errors or warnings. Now I rename the file to system.img and overwrite the original system.img in the forlder "!Files_to_flashtool". I'm able to write the ROM back to my phone with SP Flashtools but the phone doesn't work. It try to start but get stuck and I have to remove the battery. I tryed to simply unpak my system.img and repack it whitout changes but the problem remains. So I'm thinking that the file that I get from MTK Thai Tools can't be used in a ROM that will be flashed with SP Flashtools. What I'm doing wrong?. I need another tools to repack my system.img and use it with SP Flashtools?
Sorry if the question was already answered but I'm seaching over the forum and I found no answer.
Thanks in advance.
mtk6592 redmi mote 3 ?
I have a Oukitel 6000 Pro,this have a MTK 6753,but the Tool shows mit MTK 6735 ??
What is wrong??
I'm getting "E:Error executing updater binary in zip" when I unpack and repack without making ANY changes. I noticed that before I unpack, the original system.new.dat is 465 MB, whereas after I repack, the new system.new.dat is 427 MB. And the original system.transfer.list is 382 bytes, whereas after I repack, the new system.transfer.list is 1,125 bytes.
I am not making ANY changes. Just unpacking and repacking.
When I first used the tool, I was able to unpack, make changes, repack and flash the zip file and boot my phone with no issues. But suddenly it stopped doing it right. I have the proper java and python. I don't understand what happened.
Can this tool unpack the sumsang stock roms too? if not what then what tool will unpack and repack the stock system img for samsung .
