Hi guys,
As the title suggests - I'm having problems with wakelocks.
The WiFi wakelock only happens with my works WiFi (we use a BT Hotspot,) and I can't use a static address. I've disabled all WiFi and Bluetooth location scanning.
I'm completely at a loss.

i'm having the same issue with wifi wakelock as well... could this be an indication of a lemon unit since every phone (system at least) should be exactly the same out of the box... so it should be reported more widely... unless its a problem with the phone's wifi hardware

Try setting your IP address to static and within the range.
Settings > Wifi > long press on connected router > advanced > change DHCP to static.
See if that helps with your wifi wakelocks

I was wondering, is it possible to "disable" WiFi scanning once connected to a preferred network? I'm just guessing but does it use so little memory/battery to continually scan every few seconds that nobody has bothered to develop a script or app that allows this to be done?
I had a quick search on Google and the forums here but yielded little to go on.
I'm using a custom ROM atm based on Froyo 2.2.1.
Any help would be ideal. Thanks!
depending on your phone, cant you uncheck "notify me when an open network is available"?

Unchecking this doesn't stop it from scanning, it just stops it from notifying you of an open network. It will still scan around.
I'm guessing the answer is no then?
Not to worry. Thanks.

Once you're connected to a network it does not scan for new networks unless you're on the networks screen and then it will scan for them. Close the screen and it stops scanning.

I would argue that. Phones differ for sure, but mine (Eris) scans for networks and puts an icon in the status bar showing available networks if I leave wi-fi turned on. If I then open the networks screen it will show me all available networks, locked and open, but it scans regardless. It does use battery power, but a relatively small amount.

It does scan, but not constantly. Something like every few minutes or so. Maybe it's just the ROM I'm running that does this though.
Yea, my phone notifies me of available networks within range, whether on the Wi-Fi screen or not.
While I appreciate the battery/memory usage may be minimal, with the aim of optimizing my phone, an app that could disable/enable Wi-Fi scanning would be great. Am I the only person who thinks this?! Lol.

I agree. I only use wifi when I'm at home. I also use Green Power, and that will disable wifi if 3g is enabled. When connected to wifi my ROM will still scan for new networks every few minutes. I'd like a way to completely disable wifi scanning.
@Davey Boy
I too wonder about this. Like you, when on the wifi settings page it seems to scan every 12 seconds or so even though I am connected to my home network. People have said that it only does this when in that particular screen but how do they know this?
I would like to think they are right but is there any way to prove it?
Please let me know if you get anywhere with this.
Yea unfortuately all wifi connections scan due to ip leases. Depending on the router after a certain amount of time in dhcp mode your ip address expires and then is re-issued. Another reason the wifi card pings the router to ensure the connection is still alive. So honestly to stay connected the wifi needs to scan.

Pinging the router every few minutes is different from scanning for networks. Also, lease time is normally 24+ hours, so there is no need to constantly scan for networks or ping the router.

I too am wondering why we can't specify a prefered network and not bother scanning for others! I also have to kill wi-fi sharing service (with android optimizer) everytime I enable wi-fi
I have same problem after upgrading to 2.3 Wi-Fi shown as it is Active, but it is turning off and on and scaning and off again all times

sorry...........
Old topic but still interested. Any workaround found?
You can change the speed to a ridiculous amount of time. In your build.prop WiFi.supplicant.scan.interval should be set to a number of seconds. It is not advised to say change it to 24000000000000. Or something insane because if u lose signal it won't be reconnecting for you until that time is up.

I've noticed that the Note uses way too much power when I'm using the phone with Wifi-on vs when using it with 3G on, like 2 times more power.
I wonder if it's the wifi chip used in the Note or my wifi router at home (Tp-link 1043ND 300mbs N class router, 11b/g/n auto channel, auto 20/40mhz)
Same with stock rom, cassie's and rocket rom.
B/c of this I've started using the 3G access even at home, but I'd prefer to use wifi.
Anyone can fill in on this matter?
have same router, but I doubt it's cause of it.
With my dell streak I would lose around 3% battery overnight with wifi on, with the gnote I lose around 10%.
Really sucks.
I got this program, wifi TX power, but still din make test to see if can it works on the gnote to reduce wifi antenna battery usage.
some router seem to have problem in battery drain for wifi. 2wire have this problem too . best way is disable wifi when you are not using?
I've noticed something, don't know if it helps though. After connecting to a wifi router, go into settings --> wireless and networking --> wifi settings (the tab where you view the available wifi networks).
On stock 2.3.6 KK5 even if i am connected to a router it keeps scanning continuously for other wifi hotspots (look for the little circle on the right). I found no option to disable auto scanning. I have notify for open networks disabled. I don't see the same effect on my X10.
Any ideas if that causes the drain?
Edit: I've emailed samsung about the above mentioned in this post. Hopefully they will clear this up.
anyone else experience wi fi issues ??? tablet keeps losing signal ?? laptop is perfect also my phone is full signal to ?? any fix for this ?? thanks
I posted a thread in this section about the same thing called "wifi strength". It is a problem with the antenna, it gets REALLY bad reception. Mine gets 25db less than my phone in the same exact spot in my house so it is obviously an issue with the tablet.
Someone in the general section replaced the antenna and said they got significantly better results, but it looks like no one has found a US vendor for the antenna yet.
I had this problem. If you have your Wifi set to stay on all the time (even when the tablet sleeps) the Wifi will not reconnect when you wake it up. It's something to do with the rotation of the Wifi address (DHCP).
Change the Wifi disconnect setting to "when the screen goes off." That fixed my problem.
If you setup a static ip address for your connection it will stop dropping the connection. Also, there is a fix for this in the development section. Search for wifi dhcp fix and install it.
Here is the file you need, you have to flash it through recovery so if your not rooted your out of luck. Otherwise the static ip trick should fix your problem.
I've been having problems with this recently. My a500 worked fine for ages, then started playing up when I got a new wireless router (Netgear DGND3300v2). It would keep dropping out, despite my other wireless devices working even better. If I turned the wireless off, it would take ages to reconnect, or not reconnect at all.
My issue was caused with the 11G channel on the wireless router being set to auto. I changed this to 6 and as soon as I did that, it worked flawlessly. Not had 1 problem since.

Many thanks for posting this fix cruise.
I am on Timmydean's 3.2.1. (rooted)
Could you explain how to install this fix?
Many thanks
I have read the threads about WiFi connection dropping, but my N10 has a different problem. With certain Access Points (primarily at public hot spots), the N10 will simply not connect. The status alternates between "Obtaining IP Address" and "Saved". Signal strength is excellent, and I can connect to the Wi-Fi network just fine with my Nexus S phone or notebook computer. Only the N10 is unable to connect.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there any application that can help with debugging this sort of problem? It would be nice if there was a log file that had more details of exactly what's going on.

Under settings:wifi tap the extended options and uncheck wifi optimization. This may solve your problem.
Unfortunately you may have vendor incompatibility to blame for your problem, in which case there's nothing much you can do.

Will try optimization off. If that's what is breaking it, I guess it is not really an optimization, then....
Please explain how "vendor incompatibility" might be an issue. Are you saying that the Wi-Fi implementation in the Nexus 10 might not b Wi-Fi compliant? Has it been Wi-Fi certified?
Search the Q&A for wifi threads, there are a couple big ones where this sort of thing is talked about. Usually it comes down to the router on that wifi network simply wont work with the Nexus 10 unless you do some major tweaking to its settings. The problem is that many router vendors simply do not follow proper standardization and this leads to incompatibility with devices that strictly ad-hear to these (supposed) global standards.
I posted in both major threads the settings I found to fix the wifi dropouts and non-connecting problem. Unfortunately not many routers are able to properly set those options and you need custom firmware to do it.

If you know what you are doing any cheap router will work just fine, you just may not be able to leave the room. changing the broadcast channel from auto to 1,6, or 11 will help, using WPA (original) encryption with psk-tkip seems to work best for most ISP/cheap routers. Try turning Bluetooth off that can cause problems with weak signals.
Hi there. It connects fine as soon as I turn the screen on. Not sure what the problem is. I believe it's a 5.1.1 issue.

That link has the same issue and they couldn't figure it out either.

I've tried everything. It's not that the wifi turns off when screen is off. It's that it stops scanning to connect to a new network automatically. It'll stay connected to whatever wifi I'm on as long as I'm in range but as soon as I'm out of range, it won't reconnect.
I had the same issue with some non Touchwiz roms like CM and GPE. I believe this is caused by the router. While I am at work it keeps disconnecting, while at home there is no problem at all. So I believe router is the cause of the problem. If you have access to the router, I would try setting to different channels and try.

Thanks for the advice. I had thought that too but I've tested other routers as well. It's a software issue as it works fine on Touchwiz. It's not that it disconnects, it just doesn't switch to any other saved network when the screen is off. As soon as I turn on the screen, it connects right away. All routers and SSIDs.
