Just got my 6p(!) and it doesn't recognize the nano sim I put in. I put it in so that the chip itself is facing down. Does anyone know a fix other than restarting the phone?
same happened to me
I thought i was the only one, i have to send mine back...and i live all the way in Jamaica!!! this totally blows!!..Took forever to get it to me and now this!!!
The SIM should only fit one way, because of the shape. Here are some photos of how the SIM card sits in the tray.

It's in that way and it doesn't work

I hope I don't have to send it back, I've only had it for about an hour!
Have you flashed a custom rom? I unlocked mine time as I got it and flashed Chroma and Pure Nexus and got the same error message with both installations. I finally figured our that I had to download and flash the same vendor.img that the custom rom was based on to get the sim recognized. I have never had to do this with any other phone. If this phone is different somehow, it would be good for the devs to include flashing that partition in their zips or provide info about flashing it seperately.
No I didn't flash a custom Rom.. I got it unlocked bootloader and then the day after I put sim in it when I got the case.. (Didn't want to use without a case) put sim in.. Nothing.... Wiped data... Nothing... Flash factory image.. Lock bootloader... Nothing nothing nothing!!!
I'm going to try activating the sim. I thought it was ready to go since I only ordered one due to the nexus using a nano sim instead of the micro my gs5 uses

well i'm happy for you ...suxx for me...i'm back to being the only one with his problem!! smh....#FML
I had flashed the the newest vendor.img and then made a backup.. When I made the backup I choose to include vendor.. Then I flashed a couple of ROMs but I wanted to go back to my nand and restored system, data, VENDOR etc.
The issue was that I restored the vendor.. Flashing the vendor.img again made my simcard issue go away
Well I returned it and got another one.. Received it today and all is good now. Thanks for your imput
Nexus 6p no sim error
After a week with the no sim error issue I suspected the sim tray shorting the sim card ,after taping the edges of the sim card that sit on the tray and putting it back it worked immediately. I then removed the tape from the sim card and applied nail polish where the sim card sits .
After it had dried I put it back and I had a signal !

This! Mike you're an f-ing genius!!! I just received my 6p and less than 24 hours in, I received this SIM card error. As I was preparing to RMA it, I found your post. I pulled the SIM tray out and looked at it with the card in it. I'll be damned! There's about 1/64" overlap of the card contacts onto the metal tray. Short-circuit city! A couple of small pieces of scotch tape as an insulator and, Boom!, all is well! I can only imagine how many 1,000's of 6ps have been returned for such a stupid issue. The fix took all of 2 minutes. Thanks again!

And Btw...the issue is somewhat different in my case the signal comes and goes in every 10-15 minutes or so automatically sometimes comes for 5min and goes for hours. But after the signal loss it sometimes shows "No Service|Jio4G" and sometimes "emergency calls only" in the Network Tile in Quick settings.. But reboot/ toggling airplane mode temporarily fixes it. Did you also had the same problem or was it a permanent signal loss in your case ( I mean even no reboot/airplane mode fixed it) ???
And also no calls/msgs work while there is the signal...
Any ideas what's happening in my case? I've heard few same problems and few guys got it fixed by repairing their IC from working phone.

Hello,
I just got a Nexus 4 16GB (had a 8GB before) and I've to reenter my PIN code almost every time I'm unlocking the phone when it has been in deep sleep. (the card is locked and the phone is disconnected from the network)
I first thought it's caused by custom ROMs, but it's even happening on stock ROM/kernel...
Am I the only one with that kind of problem ?
If you get the sim pin wrong a couple of times, the card is locked and you need to call your provider for a personal unlock code.
If you keep trying to unlock it eventually the sim will simply become inoperable and you'll need a new one.
I can unlock it without a problem after entering my correct pin.
So it is not a problem with the SIM or my provider.
Go into Settings > security and then there should be an option along the lines of Sim card lock. Try checking in there.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Disabled the pin lock for now.. But the signal still drops when the phone is longer in deep sleep.
I had the same problem!
I don't know if this is rom or kernel related, but since I switched to ParanoidAndroid it's gone....
Ah finally someone with the same problem.
I've already been running PA, but the problem did still exist.
Did you change anything else beside that?
i removed my SIM again and cleaned it.
i've also had that issue the second day after receiving the phone. I removed the sim, put it back in but that didn't help - i looked at my sim card tray and i realized that a one side of the sim card chip was close to one metal side of the tray and i figured that could be the issue - so what i did is i took a stripe of adhesive tape and made sure they wouldn't touch - I haven't had the issue again and it's been more than 2 weeks.
Uh...I remember a kernel arg from my old HTC Topaz WiMo-Device, which was able to run XDAndroid.
The argument was pm.sleep_mode, and it is still available on the Nexus 4 and set in the system/build.prop
It controls, how the device handles locking, usually it is set to 1, but, i think, it goes from 5 to 0, where 5 is "stay on all the time" and 0 is "shut down everything when locked".
You could try to swich it to 2 or 3, maybe it helps.
I got a replacement phone which is working fine now.
Thanks for the tips anyway
hmm got a 16gb one and the Sim keeps disconnecting even without deep sleep.
might need to send it back too. poop
Hi,
I got the same problem too.
Sometime, it's getting worse and worse so I have no other choice but to reboot the phone --> When I put my PIN code and press the validation button, the screen doesn't go to the main menu but asks me again about my PIN code. Infinite loop...
I cleaned the SIM card 15min ago and no problem since (fingers crossed). I read an alternative version of android solved the issue in one case but not always. I won't take that risk if I have to send it back to the manufacturer. Before I do that, could you suggest me something else to try ?
Many thanks for your help.
Best,
Valentin
I had the Nexus 4 since December and yesterday for the first time the phone asked for the PIN code and lost the connection to the network. And like posytryon I had to enter the PIN more than once (in my case it was "only" twice). This morning it already happened twice again. Never rooted the phone, stock Android on it. What is going on?
Why are you people so paranoid? I've never used a lock on mine. In all these years....
Just asking for trouble using sim lock IMO.
What kind of silly reply is that? Why is it asking for trouble using SIM lock??? And if you read through this thread, someone had the same problem of the phone not connecting anymore even without SIM lock.
I pulled my sim yesterday because I switched users now it says no sim I put old sim in same problem flashed new rom nothing...

I'd noticed the same thing, and insulating the SIM from the holder resolved the problem for me also.
I also found an app for monitoring and alerting if the phone switched back to asking for the SIM PIN, this might be useful for others.
SIM Locked Notifier - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.slaytanic.SIMLockedRingNotifier
Finally put some adhesive between the tray and the SIM card. Worked perfectly for me too, no SIM problem for 10 days now.
Thank you so much, Lucker#1.
Maybe this is old news, but I removed the back, and hidden under it is a second sim slot. I tried putting in a sim, but not detecting it. Maybe if I flash a different rom it will work. Is this old news?

Ahh ok. I know someone that had a ZenFone2 with dual sims and put a prepaid sim in the 2nd slot to receive calls from his Google voice #. Are you trying your main sim in that slot because you may need a sim in slot 1 to get anything on the 2nd slot. It will probably only be good for calling or sms but not data.
Sent using XDA-Developers Mobile App
Ive tried 2 sims at the same time. but my main is a CDMA and that could be causing issues. Maybe if i try 2 gsm.

Interesting find! However, doubt it will work without flashing the dual SIM variant ROM.
I'm very interested to see if that second slot is still pinned / hooked up.
Hi all!
I've bought a Nexus 6P in september 2016, worked fine in every part until yesterday: my phone stopped showing signal strenght and says "No service" in the upper left corner of the screen.
I was on a custom ROM (Pure Nexus) but:
- Restoring factory images didn't help
- Restoring the oldest Marshmallow factory image didn't help either
- Erasing cache didn't help
- Switching to 2G and 4G didn't help
- I did a network settings reset, nothing changed
- I've switched to a new SIM card, nothing happened (old SIM card worked well on other phones, like this new one)
- I've never touched EFS partition but my IMEI is still there, so i don't think it's a network problem
So... Any ideas?
Oh man... I was hoping it was just me. This has happened to me too within the past few days, twice.
After waiting a few minutes it came back. It *May* be they are doing tower work. That's what I'm hoping.
I am on Verizon Wireless on the 3.79 radio if that helps add info to the pile. What radio are you on?

I'm on the same radio, latest radio in latest 7.1.1 release, january security patch, as i said before, installing the oldest Marshmallow release (so the first radio released by Google) didn't change anything!
My provider is Vodafone IT, I don't think they are doing some tower work, because everything works fine on other phones and the same SIM card in!
Good day,
Got same issue few days ago, after phone restarted due to installing January security patch. Phone was not rooted on stock firmware 7.1.1 with locked bootloader.
Cellular network don't work at all, if try to find network manually it return: Error while searching network.
In *#*#4636#*#* all switches in OFF position and cannot switch on. IMEI available.
Also when try to make a call(without network of course) it return: Turn off airplane mode to make a call. Of course it not turned on.
I try flash vendor, bootloader, baseband/radio(3.72, 3.78) previous stock firmware 6.0 and 7.0.
When flash cyanogenmod 14.1, SIM card was not detected.
Carrier Elisa (Estonia), bought in November.
Any ideas?
If you're not on Verizon, I would just switch back to 3.78 radio. Flash it manually. Don't see how that wont fix your issue

Hi mate, a friend of mine have a Nexus 6P, we are on the same carrier and the same 3.79 radio, everything works fine on his phone!
So my problem is not radio realated!
Radio 3.79 is also good for other carriers over Verizon.

Hardware problem with Huawei. The gold contacts on your SIM card are not making contact as they should. Likely a problem with the SIM tray.
Eject SIM card and put some scotch (cello) tape over the card to hold it in the plastic tray. You may need two strips (I did.) Now reinsert the SIM tray. All should be well now with your cellular connection.
Added thickness of the tape holds the SIM contacts to the connectors inside the phone tighter when the tray is closed and the problem is solved.
I did this about three months ago when I started having this problem and have been fine since.

I know you tried an old SIM, but have you been up to Vodafone to get a new replacement SIM as the next step? In my experience they are happy to replace at no charge. If Vodafone IT's new SIM doesn't work, just try a 3 ITA or TIM.

Thanks but I've already re-flashed factory image, so vendor is built in the restore procedure!
So I had an interesting experience with the same thing. Was running a custom rom that is very close to stock and updated to the most recent security update. Shortly thereafter, my carrier connection would drop (didn't notice at first because if I was connected to WiFi, it would be hard to tell). Only a reboot of the phone would fix it, for often no more than an hour or 2. So I started by wiping the device. Then I went to a different custom rom. And then finally, I went back to stock using "flash-all.bat" from the factory image. But alas, the issue continued. The last thing I did, which seems to have resolved it so far (12+ hours without a disconnection), was to relock my bootloader. Just in case it helps someone else. Is it possible that the new radio + an unlocked bootloader is causing the issue?
locked and unlocked bootloader,
hard factory reset,
flash google factory image and erase all internal storage,
wiped dalvic/cache,
flash vendor image,
flash different radio and bootloaders,
but still no service and no data. i think it's hardware issue and i have no warranty

Cleaned SIM contacts? Put tape on the back of the SIM to improve contact? Go to your cellular provider and ask for a new SIM at no charge? Complete wipe and reflash full stock image. If it is still unresolved then yes. It is hardware.

Use a good quality pen or pencil eraser on the gold contacts of the SIM and wipe clean with alcohol or dry cloth. Apply tape to the back of the SIM opposite the contacts. This is to push the SIM closer to the wire contacts in the phone. The SIM should be held very tightly by the tray and not move around. If this doesn't work, go get a new SIM from your carrier. If all the above doesn't work, then wipe the phone and reflash a full Google image using flash-all.bat SIM tray pic here.

Not a SIM card issue.
There are possibly some settings between 7.1.1 (or older) and 7.1.2 that cause both a SIM issue and/or a Bluetooth issue.
If you have Magisk installed you might be able to fix by disabling any installed modules and wiping the cache.
Reboot and see if things are normal then re-enable the modules.
I saw this problem when I updated my phone without a complete wipe of the data (not SDCARD) partition.
If you have Magisk, try the module solution first.
Otherwise backup your data and do a clean install of 7.1.2,

Facing the problem of no service and no sim card detected on my v20 after a reboot or randomly ,i ve tried every thing and found out that the problem is coming from the sim card reader ,there is a space left between the sim card and the reader causing the problem ,the fix is to full the space with a small paper or something to force the sim card into the reader

I ended up sending the phone back for exchange, after a small 1" drop the SIM was dislodged and the adapter broke and got a new one which didn't have the issue, so I unfortunately don't have any pictures. The best way however to place it is to ensure that it is directly over the SIM card and goes into the slot with your SIM, it should be providing some pressure on the back of the SIM to push it into the slot firmly, but not bulge the MicroSD adapter's metal too much, if you've done that, a fall may just break your SIM reader.
