So how is multitasking? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had the S1 and S2, both had great multitasking. But then i got the S3, that phone was horrible, EVERY app kept reloading just after switching to another app, was my last samsung therefore. Really couldnt stand it.
Now ive been using Sony(Z, Z1, and Z2 now) which has awesome multitasking, apps never reload really, what a delight.
But im really liking the S6 edge + since it has 4GB ram, but how is it? I see a thread with a fix for ram management, so i suppose its still horrible and best to buy something else? Im looking at the Moto x pure/Nexus 6P and the S6 edge+.
So how about it?

Samsung is still very hard on background apps. At least the apps seem to start where they left off.
It's a beautiful phone though, fast and smooth and really nice to own.

Sometimes it it a nuisance, some apps reload the typing fields and I have to use dual view to get the information I need to type, but it's mostly very reliable and smooth.

Custom kernel specially arter's and build.prop tweak help to make it better and excellent .. if u root your devices then go for edge plus

Is your OPT feeling pretty slow?

Hey all,
I bought a One Plus 2 yesterday (coming from the Galaxy S6) and immediately noticed how unbearably laggy the Oxygen OS was - am I the only one experiencing this? I get a few moments of fluid animations but then things just get choppy, especially compared to the Galaxy S6. I've since put the Chinese Hydrogen version on and it seems a lot more fluid but I just feel like it should be a lot faster? I've been considering just selling it on but this phone is perfect in nearly every other regard.
I was thinking that maybe this is just how things will be until some decent updates come along? Unless I'm the only person experiencing the choppiness.. Then I suppose I should be pretty worried indeed. As a point of reference, I've also used the Moto X 2014 and Z3 Compact which both seemed considerably smoother in operation. Some input from you guys would be great, along with any tips you might have to get the most out of this amazing phone.
Thanks.
Lol coming from an s6 you think its laggy? I switched from an s6 and compared to that this is the fastest phone I've ever had
Sent from my ONE A2001 using Tapatalk
Yes it is laggy as oxygen is still on beta, but you should wait and give time as it is a beast, give some time to one plus and they will fix the issues
You did update it right? The build it comes with is as dog**** as the home button is
Just update to 2.0.2 and u'll be fine.
Sent from my ONE A2001 using XDA Free mobile app
Yup.. It usually lags when you switch to airplane mode.

Phone is brand new. OxygenOS is in beta.. Let some development happen man, these specs dont lie
I updated and just got mine! Excited but it is slow. Some things up
Seems fast to me. I showed the OPT to my coworker who has an S6 Edge and he was impressed. He said it was faster than his S6. I didn't even ask him that.
Lol you obviously didn't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on then or try to go to the home screen pressing the sensor home button. Jk
I've had several phones with fingerprint scanners and this one is by far the fastest so far and the phone is quick. Home button works great also. Maybe I just got lucky.
Yeah mine's pretty slow. I went into a phone store today and tried out the Huawei Mate 7, which on paper looks way behind the Oneplus 2, and it KILLED my OPT when opening apps.
I often get lag here and there, but this is less of a problem for me. My mane gripe is how long it takes to open an app. Like, I hit the Phone icon and it literally takes up to a second to launch. That Mate 7 was practically instant.
What gives, Oneplus?
A lot of the issues I initially had with oxygen were fixed after disabling hardware buttons, including excessive battery drain, heating up, and lag similar to what you're seeing. Maybe it has something to do with grounding? Or maybe I just got used to it :S
This phone is just not meant to be a daily driver with the frustration it brings. If you want to be less mad install cm 12.1. Makes things much better than oxygen
Try flashing OxygenOS 2.0.2 again and then factory reset. You may see a bump in speed. I personally have no quirks with the fluidity of the phone. While it does have some bugs all over the place, never once did the phone feel sluggish. But with that said, the OS does need a lot more polish to really make it feel truly complete. Right now despite all the OTAs OxygenOS still feels incomplete, or maybe its because I'm too used to the versatility of a CM based ROM.
It's slow for about a minute after boot but then things are really fast

Actually, the problem is because 2 google apps are using your CPU way too much. Disable the sheets and the slides apps in settings and you should be fine. CPU usage dropped by 40% in cpu-z after disabling these apps.
Update:- actually the CPU now has really less usage after disabling (5% after disabling.).

That's something new.. I anyway just remove these apps from my /system..
Im on OOS 2.1.2 rooted.. Having xposed and AK kernel.. No lags.. Super fluid..
For those complaining about the slow app launching, download a 3rd party launcher and you'll see instantly the difference in app launching. I prefer google now launcher to maintain that stock feel.

You see, I saw some lag and I went to developer options>show CPU usage and the most of the CPU usage came from the sheets and slides apps.

Pretty unimpressed with my S6 (lag, lag, stutter ... )

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?
Is it just me? I am surprised I don't see a ton of people complaining about this
Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.
Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.
Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"
This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.
Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast
No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.
yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.
Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Keep in mind, however, if you do root you will most likely trip the knox counter on your device. This could cause some problems with warranty, and you would not be able to use Samsung pay on the device. If these things don't matter to you. Rooting is okay.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.
My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.
Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

If I understand correctly using the engineering bootloader results in the loss of use of the fingerprint scanner.

Exynos users: happy with your phone?

Hi folks,
I've thinking of picking up an S7 Edge tomorrow and want to see how Exynos users are enjoying the phone. I had the S6 last year and thought the performance was decent; there were a few instances where I noticed a small amount of lag/frame drops. With that, a few questions:
- Are you happy with your purchase?
- Does your phone ever have micro stutters?
- I plan on installing Nova Launcher on day 1. If you have this set up, do you notice any hiccups? I tried a store demo unit and it was incredibly smooth.
- Would you purchase the S7 instead if you could do it again?
- Are there any key things you dislike about the hardware or software?
Thanks.
I had the ATT S6E and an international s6-edge-plus and loved both but my S7Edge international is a far superior device. I only use Nova Prime on my OPX I use T/W on the S7E. I'm rooted running Echoe Rom and Dark Carnage theme and am thoroughly satisfied with it. In my humble opinion it's Sammy's best Galaxy by far.

I have Exynos variant and I never experienced any stutters or lags, besides the SD820 has the better GPU, but the Exynos has the better CPU, if thats what your comparing.
ooh and open bootloader, open for rooting.
Where do you get these themes from @s7freak?
Also im loving my S7E. Came from a s5 with AllianceRom and was extremely happy with it. Took the dive and got this phone and man i have to say it goes well beyond my expectations. Throw in EchoRom and a couple of xposed goodies and this thing flys.

The Exynos has come along way only annoyance (for some ) is that AOSP Roms are unlikely to happen as Samsung hold on tight to their Source code....
However when you have Echoe on its not even a thought, as the Freak says it just flies.....

These are all things that vary and my opinion is exactly that...
However here is my opinion: As I always root my devices as this gives me greater control of how I like my phone setup, Xposed does or can have an effect on performance depending what Mods you use, but even without it will have a tiny effect regardless (however I have Xposed running for YouTube addaway, Background playback...
Echoe Rom is the Smoothest & Created by a great developer....
As for advantages of root there are many as this gives you system access, allowing you to Customise to your liking...
However spend some time reading about it and take it from there....

The only annoyance with the S7E in my opinion:
Knox
Battery (1 day (2 if you're lucky))
Status bar icons - always greyish
Edge screen for typing.
Because of the curve edge, I tend to hit the keys on the side. I sometimes end up hitting the wrong keys but sometimes keys no where near where I pressed.
I am sure I will learn round these but those are the only issues.
I am still debating rooting. I havn't seen much feedback of other users

- Yes, i'm still overhyped. This Phone is a very very pleasing experience to use.
Battery Life is one of the BEST i've ever seen in any Phone. On normal Usage (whatsapp, browsing, etc. Not heavy Gaming, or heavy 9gag browsing (9gag drains battery quite good)) i can hit 7-8 hours screen-on-time EASY. One time, i hit 5 Hours screen on time, and still had exactly 50% Battery Left. This phone can be a BEAST when it comes to battery Life.
Of course, it helps if you disable stuff like "always search for Wlan/Bluetooth", and use a Dark Theme to make use of Amoled.
The Exynos version has like a 15-35% longer battery Life, depending on situation/apps used than the snapdragon version, you can Root it and isntall custom recoveries, and the Audiochip is better (for Headphones)
- I bet it does. The Question is, if you notice it.. Theres an option, that makes it visible, if you get any Frame drops. During heavy usage, there will be some frame drops for sure (No Android phone exists, where this isnt the case!!). However, on my subjective feeling, its very snappy, and very smooth. The overpowered CPU, GPU, and the fast UFS 2.0 storage (with 4gb ram) are a very nice combination.
So i think, the Exynos S7(Edge) is the phone, with one of the Fewest micro stutters there is in the Android world.
- not using nova launcher, because i'm quite happy with the stock one. But i don't think, you will have any issues.
- Nope. I chose the S7 Edge over teh S7, mainly because of the bigger Battery. And mayyybe because of the slightly bigger screen. I came from an HTC One M8, which was just a few mm smaller than the S7 Edge.
S7 Edge has maybe 10-30% longer battery life, depending on situation.
- A Few things i dislike:
On Touchwiz Launcher, there is no automatic alphabetical order in the App Launcher. When you download new apps, you have to sort it manually.
In Task Switcher, the apps are scrollable with kind of Grid. Stock google is much smoother, as there is no Grid at all. Difficult to explain, but it feels strange to scroll up and down.
Headphone jack could have a bit more "power", and maybe Quality. But only veeeeeery enthusiastic audiophiles will complain here. I use my 399€ UE 900 in-ear-monitors, and have no issues. It sounds clean, and correct. No distortions, or a false frequency response or anything.
But all complains here from me, are just very little minor stuff. After using it for almost 2 months now, i truly understand, why so many Reviewers crowned it as the best Smartphone so far, and also called it "close to perfection".
Checking all the Specs, and the overall package, it truly is THE Best (Android) Smartphone, you can buy right now. Even more with the better Exynos chip.
My only annoyance is the fact that the home button is raised, and the fingerprint sensor is not always-on. I would have much preferred to unlock the phone just by touching the home button and not pressing it. Right now I'm using the phone without any security.
Another annoyance, coming from an LG G2, is the lack of double-tap to wake. That was a really really useful feature.
And a final one, the AOD screen is just useless. It doesn't display all notifications like the LG G5, only missed calls and SMS messages.
Happy but not as i should be, All galaxies s7 i tested with angry birds 2 and PPSSPP emulator perform poorly, that not due to hardware but some new software features they introduced with 6.0.1, disable gameservices does not help, rooting and forcing governor to performance eliminates a lot of it but it's not perfect.
When Note 5 got 6.0.1 i had same issues, went back to 5.1.1 and all working perfect!!! it might not affect all games, but those two it does and that freaking annoying, there are some lags here and there, touchwiz lags other than that, no other flagship can beat S7.
Everything is perfect!!
Except for the knox.
So i cant root and get roms and xposed..
Except for the accidental touches due to the edge.
Tho when i bought a spigen hybrid case.. everything is fine.
Its quite thicker but it feels safer on my hands.

[Discussion]The S8 is the smoothest Android interface I've ever used. Thoughts?

So for those of you who have gone through a ton of Android phones like I have, do you think it's the smoothest you've used? The S8 is nothing like the S7 touch wiz or I call it tough wiz. It was choppy and sticky. This S8 is so fluid and smooth. The more I use it the more I appreciate it. It's by far the smoothest interface I've used. However I have not used the Pixel but did have the Nexus 6p which I think the Pixel is a tweaked out version of the 6p anyway and the S8 beats it out. What do you guys think. Is the S8 the smoothest Android interface on the market? I think so. Just curious of everyone's take on it. Chime in and let me know what your take is. Do you keep your S8 at full resolution or do you keep it in default mode as it came? Also it seems that most have the plus version. I feel like I am the minority having the regular S8. Post what you have either the regular size or the plus and why you chose your model. I'm just curious of others thoughts. I also see a lot of people not using a screen protector. I'm definitely using one but not a tempered glass. I'm using a liquid skin by skinomi. Post what you use or the kind as I'm curious what else is out there that is good. The Skinomi is great and does not collect fingerprints hardly at all. So are you a regular size S8 user or a Plus user? Tell me why you chose one over the other. I personally like the one handed use. I wanted the plus but I was afraid it would be just too big after prolonged usage. I might be totally wrong though. Anyways thoughts???
They won't believe you but I think my s8 plus it's the smoothest
After a few months, I totally don't have the feeling to find custom rom and flash it. Samsung phone that I used previously always end up running a custom rom, I always feel something ****ty and need to find custom rom to change it.
But this is the first phone that I break the screen so fast T.T
I broke it last week....i thought I already put my phone in my pocket, but after I release my hand.... Good bye my screen, time to waste some time at the service center ><

It is the best Samsung Interface but It is not the smoothest android interface. Xperia has very light UI which is very smooth as well as HTC sense is also fluid, these custom UI doesn't have more features than Samsung's UI but they are optimized better than samsung's UI.
Stock its stuttering and quite laggy. With a custom Rom and kernel it's great.

A week ago I got myself a s8 ,I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I’m so sick of having to deal with this size , it feels like a brick, plus I don’t like the “psysical button “ , I wanted to get rid of it so I gave the s8 a try , and so I did and I loved the design , the screen , the camera ( night shots are better than the iPhone 7 in my opinion ) but the performance is just awful , innaceptable for a flagship , choppy scrolling , the framerate skips like crazy sometimes , it just ... lags :/
I couldn’t believe it after reading the rave reviews , so it turns out that the European version has the Exynos cpu instead of the snapdragon 835 and the benchmarks don’t tell the whole story , I tried uninstalling unnecessary apps , deactivating bloat apps , deactivating the side panel , using nova launcher ( without using root or freezing apps or something like that , but it didn’t help , did you guys just get used to the lag ? :/ have you read that the performance on the note 8 is better (the example version of course ) and if it is , so you think it’s because of the extra ram ?
I’m hopeful that Samsung will make the performance better with the Oreo update but that update will probably come in December / January , what are we supposed to do until then ?
Coming from a Huawei Mate 9 and resently activating my note 8(snapdragon) it ain't much better. Nothing about this phone is butter smooth.
Will be getting mate 10 next month. First Samsung since note 3/4.
Not horrible but expected more with specs/company
I honestly don´t know what you are talking about. Maybe I just don´t notice it.
I know up to the Galaxy S6 the Samsung Flagships were always lagging like crazy with StockROMs, but at least since the S7 it´s smooth like other Flagships. (Always talking about Exynos)
Where do you experience the lag? I just checked Twitter, Menus and browser an couldn´t notice any
I use Nova Launcher, which definitely improves the experience a lot. Combined with changing animations to 0.5x it almost never feels laggy. I rarely switch back to TouchWiz to see if it has improved, but always end up going back to Nova. I also use Gboard instead of Samsung keyboard, which also feels snappier and has better prediction.

Same here ! No more lag with this setup
I have the dual SIM international version (Exynos) since around launch date. I don't recall any instances of lag. On rare occasions there is the odd app crash.
I have not used an iPhone for any length of time to be able to compare, but we have a couple of iPads, one of them is relatively new and when using it for general browsing, reading, etc, I don't feel that I get a markedly better or smoother experience. Both S8 and iPad just work very well.

I have an iphone 7 256gb Red Edition and my S8 is no more laggy than my iphone, yes iphone can lag too. BTW, iphone is for sale. You need to be more specific where you see lags if you want people to help. I get lag when scrolling on Piano Tiles 2 but that's because he's a ****ty developer but the game is awesome. Need way more details.
I have exynos version with custom rom and i have no lags. If you what have fone with no lags at all buy iPhone. Every android have Little lags and glitches.
DEVELOPER OPTIONS (see screenshot) transition animation speed 0.5x
I read a post in the Essential Phone forum:

To make it more snappy, go into developer options and set the transition speed to .5 instead of 1. That should make things seem to zip."
I've attached a screenshot, but my transition animation speed is still at default 1x (i.e., not the 0.5x recommendation).

its more like the screen "trembles" , they just don't feel smooth , it feels like the phone it's at its limit, it's just "choppy"
Facebook is a horrible app regarding optimization. I also noticed horrible lags there. Ended up uninstalling and i am now using it via chrome and its great. No lags, bettet battery etc.
I dont use twitter but instagram is fine on me no lags at all. As for playstore nothing can be done about it. It was always that way.

All of this + youtube hdr playback above 720p. Seriously it should be fixed or bye bye samsung this time.
P.S The ``tremble`` is called stuttering and if you search from google you will found tons of users having exactly the same issue. In my oppinion the exynos processor throttles a lot due to overheating. Cant proove it though cause am no specialist on this matter

Lets say i visit www.rt.com with the browser , as soon as the comments the advertisments appear , performance is halved and it sucks to browse in such a way.
No lag for me, if there was then I wouldn't have the phone, I am EXTREMELY demanding. But then I dont have **** apps like twitter and facebook that are VERY badly written and drain the battery like theres no tomorrow. I also use nova so cant comment on whether any lag might be touchwiz related, not used touchwiz since my S3.

can you properly play 1440p hdr videos from youtube or even 1080p hdr without stutter and frame skip?

Weird thing-- I'm using one of the YouTube background play-enabled apps.. God I wish I could remember which one, but I got it here. Has some theme options, using one with a back background. I experience absolutely no lag with 1440phdr with this app.. No such luck with the base Youtube app
After cleaning up as many services as possible with Package Disabler, the rest of my interface lag has vanished (even in TouchWiz)
Last couple days have seemed like I have finally found the device the S8 is supposed to be, buried under the inefficient bloat and bogus it ships with.. Of course, I'm on the 835, so this may not have meant anything to begin with haha

Snapdragon isint much better either. My roommate got a pixel 2 XL and his phone is smoother (with all apps running) than my freshly factory reseted S8.
i just changed my iphone 7 with s8 exynos , i see no different in performance , in fact i loved s8 more , i can't deny that s8 have a little of lags but from my experience ios has lags too , i have 6:30H screen on time in my s8 , i never dreamed about that in my iphone 7 , in iphone I only got 5H screen on time
This is assuming the iPhone 7 suffered no lag or stutters under iOS 11. I came from the iPhone 7 and use to notice stutters while scrolling through contact lists and even the home button had delays. I've got Nova Launcher set up on my current S8 and stock rom with tons of apps and never formatted since I've been using it for the past 3months. I won't lie I did come across occasional stutters but I find it way more fluid than the experience I had on iOS. The list scrolling, app animations, etc is really smooth.

I agree to a certain extent. I used the Xperia XZ1 Compact for a month on Android 8.0. The interface felt faster than the S8 given the same developer options. You can speed up the S8 if you want by lowering the screen resolution (settings>display). But then you wouldn't have the higest (other than S7) screen DPI ever seen on a phone.
