Using track ball to wake phone screen?

Would it be hard to program the trackball to wake to the lock screen rather than having to hit the top button. I find it very annoying and it would be so much better for one handed use.
(this thing is slippery!)

It bugs me a bit too. When I had an iPhone I almost always use the home button to bring the unlock screen up. Also my nexus one is a bit slippery too I want a case.

I would be more interested in using volume keys to play/pause/forward/rewind the music payer without waking up the phone. This was one of the applications in iPhone.

If you're playing music, the volume keys are still able to adjust the media volume while music is playing and the phone is locked (and the screen doesn't turn on while doing it either). I prefer that behavior actually.

That's the one thing that always bugged me about the Droid, and what do you know... the N1 has the same problem, lol. Anyway, there has been a lot of discussion about this (including here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613678&highlight=trackball). There's a thread in development as well about maybe mapping that function to the trackball... who knows.

CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.

I found a solution! (sort of).
"Lock bot Free" from the android market is what i use now.
It enables you to pick differnt lock screens ( i like the hero one since u just scroll downwards to unlock) and it allows for u to press the trackball to wake up.
I have found that it is kind of buggy still. If i reboot the phone, I end up with two lockscreens. The regular nexus 1 one and then my hero one. So i had to reinstall it for it to work properly.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with that app. I just found it on my search to make my N1 less annoying.

I was about to come post this same thing, although I'm experiencing a weird glitch too, but I actually like it. For some reason I don't get a lock screen at all after my phone locks. I hit the trackball/volume keys/power button and it just goes straight to whatever screen I was at when it locked. Pretty sweet actually.

This is Very good, if it was working
it randomly locks or not the screen which is Unaxeptable in my pocket

I tried the alpha3 of myLock. It... sort of worked, except that every time I unlocked/woke the screen, the app itself would toggle itself off. No idea why; it's not like I even have a task killer anymore.

Lock 2.0 from the market works well.

does that allow you to have a regular or hero lockscreen?
ALl i saw on the screenshots were Iphone lockscreen ripoffs.
And if i wanted an iphone i would've gotten one. Why you'd want to make your N1 look like an iphone I can never figure out.

Trying Lock 2.0 free, so far it works pretty good. I can't change my lockscreen pic and I don't like how it goes to the lockscreen when touch home...

What I don't like about Lock 2.0:
1) If you wake up your phone by accident (and don't unlock the phone) it doesn't go back to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity,
2) it doesn't show your notification bar so you don't know whether you got a new email or text message or other notification.

Have you even looked in the settings? Please examine the app more closely.

Using Lockbot free now. Does what I wanted perfectly (press any hard button to wake up), plus lets me use the Eclair lockscreen which I've always found more aesthetically pleasing.

Installed Lockbot Free, and it does exactly what I want with the trackball, but I can not work out why sometimes it gives me the Eclair screen which I like, and sometimes it chooses a different screen?

You have to uncheck the stars (I can't remember specifically) next to the unlock screens you do not want to show up. I never liked LockBot, it isn't a precise copy of the real lock screen(s), if I'm going to use a imitation I rather it look complete..

Open up the app, press "My theme." It'll give you a "playlist" of different lock screens. I simply un-star all the ones I don't want and stick with Eclair after changing the background. The clock's font is a bit off, but I will cope.

[CLOSED] Completely disabling Nexus 10 touchscreen

I'm setting up a tradeshow display for my company, we're using 3 Nexus 10s in a bent 36"x36" panel. They'll just be looping video, though interactivity may be added to one of them later on. Before I got the Nexus 10s I tested some apps on my Note II that disable the touchscreen because I wanted to prevent anyone from interfering with the looping video.
Unfortunately, I've come to find that while those apps will disable interacting with the main content, it doesn't prevent the Home/Back/etc buttons from working on the bottom bar on the Nexus 10. Additionally, it seems to prevent the video from going completely full screen, leaving the Home/Back/etc icon bar up.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I might truly disable the touchscreen once I have video going? Even if it meant requiring a full reboot to restore touch, that would be fine with me, for the most part we'd just set it and forget it. Some way to just crash or disable the touch screen driver? I'm not rooted right now, but I can be if that's what it takes.
Otherwise we'll end up going with clear acrylic overlays with magnets in them for quick access to the screen,that approach is just generally uglier though, and I'd love to avoid it.

Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for. I ended up using a similar app called full!screen that allowed me to specify two touch areas but then make the icons for those tiny/transparent. BSPlayer has a lock so that casual interaction with the device won't do much. From there I can probably fully lock the touchscreen and have it only unlock with a triple tape or messing with a hardware button (only the operator will have access to the buttons, it's mounted inside an enclosure).

[Q] How to fix anoyances with Note 3/Touchwiz

I'm have slight buyers remorse, but I have a few more days till I can't return it for a full refund. I hoping to find out if any of the issue I have with the Note 3 or more accurately touchwiz will be able to be solved. I'm coming from a history of running customs ROMS on my galaxy S1 and galaxy S2, most of the time cyaogenmod. Lucky I find touchwiz has improved but here are my over all gripes:
Can't change the vibration pattern for notifications, most importantly text messages and emails. You can create customs patterns but they are only for calls. This is my biggest problem right now. And the fact that clearing a message from the notification bar doesn't mark it as read is annoying.

I really got used and liked the pop up/quick message window option that cyaogenmod had. I would like that along with the removal of chat bubbles.

How likely is it that my gripes with touchwiz can be fixed, yet still stay on touchwiz framework due to not wanting to lose functionality? I am aware it will require root and most likely a custom ROM, but if I was able to start out with just some modifications to stock rom, that might be a good start. I might find out but 1-4 are my biggest complaints. I love the note 3's hardware, but I'm hoping the roms/touchwiz won't push me toward the nexus 5....
One additional question, all these model numbers are confusing as hell. I have the N900W8, will that hinder my ability to use custom roms? Is it an equivalent to another model number? (X-Note is the only roms I've seen so far the explicitly says its compatible with the 900W8)

If you open Magazine and hit menu, then choose Settings, you can turn the double home press off from in there.
The swipe from the bottom gesture can't be disabled short of doing something like freezing Magazine with Titanium Backup.

A fwlew of these things are easily fixed with xposed wanam module. You need to be rooted though. As for Google voice, freeze svoice (maybe you can just clear defaults, but I froze it) then when you double tap home, you'll be given options in what you want that to do.

One hand use

Hi!
I'd like to know if anybody actually uses Samsung's features in order to help using the phone with one hand?
I myself make only use of the (not convincingly thought through) gesture which allows me to shrink the screen.
The assistant menu:
quite customisable, but much too big and slow for my taste.
Side key panel:
the other way round, quite comfortable to use, but nearly no customisation at all.
All in all I'd say lots of options, but not really thought through. What do you think?

Like you, I find the side key panel quite useful- eliminates the thumb stretching for the "back" button.
One handed input is also turned on & is mildly helpful for the dialer. Seemed to help a bit with continuous input on the keyboard as well, but ended up switching back to the stock Google keyboard I've grown so accustomed to.
Long pressing the recents key to bring up menus is also nice, though not specific to the Note 4.

Sometimes I use the shrink screen function that's when I'm to lazy to move my other hand haha

I agree with everything you said. Still: I'm not too convinced from what the side key panel offers. If you could customise the side key panel the same way as the assistant menu, I'd totally go for it.

I seem to remember that there should be an app that mimics the one you can find in Ios. Anyway, there are several very good apps I use for 'one handed mode':
- button savior non root (you can find in in the google play store) which gives you back, home, recent, screen lock and lets you start both the dialer and the camera;
- lmt launcher (see at xda) which works very well if you are rooted and lacks some little features if you are not. You just have to remove tue superuser permission from the manifest file (which you can do with apk permission remover) and turn on accessibility and it'll work almost as a charm. I mean, it does not only allow you to mimic the hardware keys, it can start any app and any activity which does not require root. If you are rooted, it can do virtually anything;
- as a good replacement of lmt launcher, you can test pie control by Coolace (always in the google play store).
I mostly keep the note 4 in my left hand (though I am right handed) just because my 2 years experience with the note 2 has got me accustomed to writing with my right hand, while keeping the smartphone with the left one... so that I currently feel uncomfortable while holding the note with my dominant hand So, I feel the need to have virtual keys on the right side, since reaching the back button on the right side is not so easy (though my hands are normally sized) and the above mentioned apps are the most useful I have found.

No doubt macmobile, some customization options would be nice. The big phone trend isn't going away, so I'm hoping that more options for easing one-handed use are in the pipeline. Samsung would do well to lead the way, given their investment in the "phablet" space.

I rooted every single phone or tablet before buying a Note 4 and now, though I miss the fun of flashing rom and mods, I think this phone has too many sensors which wouldn't be supported by an AOSP rom, while custom touchwiz roms aren't worth for me to give up to knox. Not much for the warranty loss, but more for the loss of the knox enviroment itself. So, since I don't want to root, I have got to look for work-arounds and I think there are many good apps.
Back on topic, imho Samsung has so far designed the best implementation for one hand usage, though it could be better. If you look at the nexus 6, it's just a big phone and the Iphone itself is just a (good) 5.5" phone which doesn't pay particular attention to single hand usage.
I agree with you both that phablets are very likely here to stay and that the current UI for single hand usage is at very early stage.

I just received the Note 4 with lollipop pre installed.

Samsung screwed one thing about One handed operation: there is no separate setting for dialing keyboard and QWERTY keyboard, just like it was on my previous Note II.
I wish I could set smaller dialpad, but retain full QWERTY, which is not the option any more.
When set one handed operation ON, samsung keyboard is just too small to me.

My wish list for a perfect Axon 7 - Post yours!

So I got my grey Axon 7 yesterday and after a whole day of playing around with things, I have come up with a short list of things I would love to see implemented into a custom ROM. I do not care if it is a modded-stock ROM, enhanced version of CM- but these things would make my experience so much better.
1. Camera fixes - Specifically, the front-facing camera. If this can be done on the software side, that is my main concern.
2. Lockscreen - Please please please implement an always-on feature that works properly. Coming from the Moto X pure, it has been less than awesome having to press the power button to see a notification, or use the slow DTTW.
3. Get rid of that stupid bell! We all hate the bell. Get rid of the bell. It is not charming. It is not fun.
4. Enable on-screen nav buttons - The capacitive buttons are surprising decent, but I would rather use on-screen buttons myself.
5. Screen-on-time stats- Yes I know I can use GSAM or BBS for this, but there is no place in the huge menu of power options to see the actual screen-on-time for the device. Extremely silly.
6. This one is a long shot, but the double tap to wake is very very slow. This might be a kernel thing and farther down the line, but I would love to see the double tap activate faster.
Anyone have things on their wishlist? Post them!

Native notification badges.
When I swipe the drawer down, I wish the functions (wifi, bluetooth etc) would scroll left and right to access the rest.

Customizable quick settings would be nice. Including adding DND and other options to the options.

- Black/dark theme with this Amoled display
- optional on-screen buttons
- advanced usage of fingerprintscanner, like: flashlight if long pressed while in standby, multi-way scrolling (remember those HTC home buttons that had a scroll function integrated), gestures (quick cam access...)
- two colored dual led for better white tones
- improved cam software specially for low light environment
- aosp edition
- released sources for all proprietary devices like OP3 did

CyanogenMod / sultan rom with xposed module. The hardware is good on the phone but the software is mediocre. Sometimes I double tap and nothing happens or its super delayed. My OPO running sultan responds immediately on any double to wake. The fingerprint reader can be finicky.
I would move to the axon 7 fully Tomorrow if CyanogenMod rom was available. Right now I am just testing it out and contemplating whether to send it back.
Oh and I hate that dang notification bell. I don't understand the thought process at axon 7 that thought some things would be a good idea. The capacitive buttons also annoy me highly. They are too close together and not backlit. If in the future you want to use a custom ROM and use on screen buttons you'll still have those permanently viewable capacitive buttons there. That was terrible idea from axon. I wish I could find the person but who sitting at meeting and said "that's a great idea" and have a strong conversation with them.
The axon 7 is so close to being a fantastic phone but the software, poorly optimized implementations and capacitive buttons are really limiting to it.
Hoping custom ROMs come to the rescue. The screen and general hardware are all great. Even the camera could be improved through software. ZTE is really in an important time now to foster the phone. If they don't embrace that I think the axon 7 will be a "it was almost great phone" and forgotten. Remember the new Nexus is coming out soon so they will be soon overshadowed. Not to mention the op3 is still a great phone with wonderful software implementation.

You can have quick cam access with the fingerprintscanner if you dont use all your fingers for unlocking your phone...i am using my middle finger for example to quick open the camera...you have to go to settings - fingerprint- Quick open app.

The software can be better, and that's something that ZTE can actually change.

so they are blind or what? if this is from software.

My only wish is improve system and increase the battery, that's it.

I just got the phone and I'm not sure I would keep it as the software is really the weak spot. The OnePlus 3 software is perfect, it does everything I need and the OP's needs as well. The hardware isn't as feature rich as the Axon 7. If Cyanogenmod 14 comes out for this phone, it'll be a winner. Then we just need a CM14 based custom rom that would be great. Right now I would love to have the OnePlus 3 rom on the Axon 7. I could use the on-screen buttons or not and switch buttons as well as customize the function. That's what Axon 7 should have. ZTE is much bigger company than OnePlus they need to get their act together.

simple. just take this phone and make the screen 6 inches. add an FM chip, IR blaster, and wireless charging. Perfection!!!!

That's called the Moto Nexus 6. AND it was too big.
But I agree with the other specs you mention especially the Qi wireless charging and IR blaster), just not the screen size.

Give a legit music player, the stock one is a terrible.

You could use ACDisplay in the meantime. It's similar to the Moto phones' notification screen, and it works great.

Camera updates
Kernel updates
Android n
Android n themed notification panel
Stock android lock screen
Ram optimisations & zram implementations.
Hifi dac and Dolby for all apps.

On screen buttons. My only gripe. Can't believe they won't even give the choice right now. Sucks that they will always be visible as well... Such potential but so disappointed.
