Does factory resetting my Moto X Pure 2015 remove my root? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first rooted phone, I am selling it to get the Nexus 6p. I was wondering if factory resetting would remove my root and relock my bootloader?

No it does not. You have to follow a specific set of steps. There are a few threads here that tell you how to flash the stock from and lock the bootloader. Search for them in these forums.

[Q] Unroot back to stock for warranty

In searching through the Development threads about rooting, I didn't really see a concise answer to this.
If I root using a method from Development - say SuperRoot from paulobrien, can I unroot back to stock say for warranty purposes? I'm all for rooting and trying the ROMs already out for us (thank you to those that have gotten this ball rolling fast already!!), but I've seen some low build quality issues from friends and want the ability to return this if necessary.
Google already has the factory images posted. Been up for a while. Flash em and relock bootloader
Download the stock Nexus 7 image and go into the recovery mode on your Nexus 7. Then extract the stock image file and the scripts inside the same archive. Use these scripts to restore back to stock, and use fastboot oem lock to lock it up when you're done.
Now it'll be exactly as it was from Google.
Even if you return to root, google can still detect that the device has been rooted.

When you stock and lock, there won't won't be warranty issues.

should i unroot etc?

i received my replacement n4 and now I'm supposed to return my scratched n4. should i flash back stock ROM stock recovery and unroot before i ship it?
yes flash stock image, unroot and oem lock it. its better to be sure rather than sorry later. use the nexus root toolkit as it has all the functionalists.
Yes. Try to revert as much modifications as possible since you don't want Google to find out.

[GUIDE] 4.4 Custom-ROM *LIKE* Experience

NOTE---I'm happy to help if you run into trouble. Hit me up on twitter @bongostl ---NOTE
Hi All--I hope this is useful to someone.
I have been on nothing but Nexus devices for years (I swore I would never go back to anything else), but the Moto X swayed me away! However, I really miss the customization / openness of Carbon Rom on my Nexus 4.
Here is my (ongoing) attempt at replicating that experience. I hope this guide is helpful to you.
------------------------------------
I ONLY have experience with the XT1058. I don’t see why something similar wouldn’t work for other models, but….
Also, I take zero responsibility if you mess your phone up. I’m happy to try to help you out, but zero liability.
I am doing all of this on Windows 8.1.
----------------------------------------
Step 1: Getting a clean 4.4 ROM that is rooted, with a writable system folder
First we’ve got to get your drivers set up, adb, etc...
1. (note: install these things with your phone NOT plugged into the computer)
Minimal ADB/Fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Moto X USB Drivers: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481/action/auth
RSD Lite (this is like ODIN for Samsung phones) : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42057363/RSDLite_v6.1.x.zip
2a. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO / CAN'T UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER, SKIP TO #2b
So if you don’t mind losing your warranty, go unlock your bootloader. It makes everything a lot easier. You can do that here: https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth
if you successfully unlocked your bootloader ,and you are already on 4.4, you can skip this step and continue with TWRP.
However, if you are on 4.2.2 and you successfully unlocked your bootloader use RSD Lite to flash (eventually) to 4.4 using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515
At that point, flash TWRP using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534850
(you’ll need a ‘motorola fastboot binary’ for this...you can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092 !)
Then just flash SuperSU in recovery:
http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip
2b.
If you don’t want to unlock your bootloader, then it’s going to be a bit more work...but still shouldn’t take you more than an hour.
Go here and follow the guide to flash back to stock 4.2.2 CAMERA UPDATE. That SHOULD be the latest of the 4.2.2 ROMS. DO NOT FLASH 4.4 AT THIS POINT.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515
Now you’ve got to set up Telnet:
http://www.sysprobs.com/install-and-enable-telnet-in-windows-8-use-as-telnet-client
Now let’s root / Upgrade to 4.4 kitkat
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896
(note: you can find telnet instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509590 )
3.
Now we need to turn off ‘write protection’
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551113
That’s it, you’re done with the hard part! Now comes the fun part.
-----------------------------------------
Step 2: Custom Rom Tweaks / Bug Fixes
1. Custom-Rom Experience
For ROM tweaks, XPOSED works amazingly well, and provides 90% of the tweaks I used in Carbon:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
I am currently using the following modules (Dl them from within xposed) :
Gravitybox start here... This is the best!
HideCarrierMoto (note:if you use this, you can skip the next step, "tethering")
XBlastTools I use this to always enable the menu button... The Gravitybox implementation disables the swipe up for Google now shortcut
Wanam Kit I like the reset menu in this better than gravitybox
2. Tethering
We’re going to make it so you can do wifi tethering just like on a Nexus device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544679
3. Fix the weird calendar bug
Disable/freeze Calendar. Wipe data for Calendar Storage. Download Google Calendar from the play store. Reboot.
4. (For LOCKED bootloaders ONLY) Safestrap TWRP is working great on rooted 4.4 (ignore the o.p. which says otherwise... It hasn't been updated)
http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/top...OCKED]-Safestrap-Recovery-v3.65-[2013-11-13]
Step 3: Other Useful / Fun Stuff
1. Change the boot logo to any image you want! I recommend just cropping and pasting into the example image you can downloaded from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2445150
2. Install the nexus 5 dialer!
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/...l-it-manually-on-other-kitkat-roms-download/
Nice guide, I have a vzw motomaker moto x coming in so I'll be using this guide in the next week or two most likely.
For non-dev editions, step 2a isn't possible, we'll need to do 2b, correct?
And under 2b, you don't ever mention when we should install 4.4.
Your 2b has us flashing to 4.2.2 camera update, then getting telnet access, then you link to a root for 4.4.
Thanks for the guide though, this is the only start to finish guide that I've found.
Flashing 4.2is the first step in ending up with a rooted 4.4
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
I updated the instructions above to better clarify that when you follow the rooting guide, upgrading to 4.4 is a part of the process
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
Also, if you have a suggestion for something to add to this guide, let me know!

Nice guide. If I am on 4.2.2 rooted with rockmymoto, would I need to reflash the rom and lose root before flashing 4.4 or could I just go ahead and flash 4.4 at this point?
Also, as for adding something, you could add instructions about how to flash Moto ROMs without using RSD Lite or how to remove lines from the XML that cause a complete system wipe
Anirudh.... I don't know how to do either of those things... but if you write it up,I'll include it....

so this isn't actually a guide to a custom rom. This is just taking the regular moto x, rooting it, and adding many of the features people use in custom roms.
So yes, you will still have all the great moto x features!

This is what comes up when I try to get my unlock data via fastboot (I inserted X's in the middle of the #'s to protect my info). When I copy and paste it into the Motorola site it says my phone isn't eligible to unlock but it is a T Mobile phone so it should be eligible, right? I watched a YouTube video on getting the unlock data and his had the word "bootloader" before each line of numbers. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong? Thanks

Jcase's "SlapMyMoto" "Now what" Q and A thread. By dtrud0h.

This post is to try to sort out the questions, concerns and troubles that users come up against when using.the "SlapMyMoto" rooting method to gain "Root" on the Moto X.
[Question]What happened to my "Recovery"--
[ANSWER]- It's gone. There's no "Recovery". Now you have read/write access to /system instead of a recovery. Your system will boot normally, except /system will be read-write accessible.
[Question ] - Can I flash Xxx-xxx.zip through recovery like it says here - xxxxxx.com/yada/yada/instructions (with link to. Zip file) .com
[Answer] No.
[Question ] Why not?
[Answer] Because you have a "Custom" Recovery that does nothing more than provide read-write access. to the /system partition , ..period.
[Question] -- Can I use some other"Recovery"?
[Answer ] -- ? DUNNO? Maybe jcase will chime in and clarify that. As it stands, maybe the 4.4 recovery, don't know for sure what it will do to your root. Whether it is the 4.4, or 4.2 recovery, without unlocking your Boot loader it will have to be a signed. zip file for system security.
Where else can I turn for answers?
Hopefully, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896
SlapMyMoto 0.5c Beta (4.4 root, RW to system)
As it stands, jcase is attending to family/personal matters. I'm sure he will be back sometime. Until then, just have to wait it out.

Question- Why with a locked bootloader do I need recovery?
Answer- You don't!
Comment- Good, because you don't have one now that you used SlapMyMoto to root. Your recovery has been replaced by write protection off.

Yup, you sure could. What I'm trying to get across to the masses is, its not all about you lowvolt1, there are many new, or people that don't known their way around all this that read the "How-to" from xyz.com and expect it to work.
If you can read, apply your good judgement, and move on then great.
There are other people that can't yet wrap their heads around the bootloader/recovery thing that just got a phone, have no clue, and want help or answers. This is the thread for them.
Maybe you should start a thread for stuff that's all about you if that's what you want.

My narcissistic nature is not in question here. What is in question is why you are trying to help new people or people with questions, yet you continue to blurt out false truths.
Maybe you should listen to the people that have alot more knowledge than you and I put together and do a little more research before you continue to confuse people.

OK I for one found your (original) explanation quite helpful as I didn't pick up on the recovery/bootloader thing. I'm still not rooted...
The recovery I can live without - I think you've explained it well.
What happens to the bootloader? it looks like (in step "5") it is downgraded to the 4.2.2 bootloader? So we're running 4.4 with a 4.2.2. bootloader when all said and done?

Guys-
I don't feel like going through all 80+ pages on the slapmymoto thread, so I will ask it here.
I have the at&t version with 4.4 on it. Can I root at the moment with the 0.5 slapmymoto, if not, is 1.0 going to be solving this issue?
Thanks in advance-

Yeah, this is jus the retail at&t version on the Cyber Monday sale. I had the GSM DE from day 1 but sent it to a friend in england to play with and then Cyber Monday deal popped up, so I ordered one but this time I went with the custom design which only comes with the carriers.
Anyways, how can I know if I can unlock the bootloader or not?

1. There are no custom roms at the moment. Unless you have the Verizon Dev edition.
2. You will only gain root access and RW permissions
3. The easiest way is slap my motto is the only way if you want to be rooted on kit Kat 4.4
4. You will definitely need adb

[Q] Say if you boot into "recovery," otherwise write protection-off mode, then you reboot. Do you boot back into normal mode? Or does it default into write protection-off mode until you explicitly tell it to boot normally?

That depends, are you rebooting in to recovery again, or rebooting in to Android? Android = WP on. Recovery = WP off.
A couple of non-SlapMyMoto questions have been asked here so... (dtrud0h, feel free to add these to your OP)
[Q] What is the best way to root my Moto X?
[A] Depends what Rom is on your X. Generally there are 3 "stock" motorola rom versions for the X. The ROM it shipped with (android 4.2.2), the "camera fix" update (4.2.2), and Kit Kit (4.4). And it depends on if you have a locked bootloader or not.
Locked Bootloader with KitKat (4.4) see SlapMyMoto -> SlapMyMoto 0.5c Beta (4.4 root, RW to system)
Locked Bootloader with "Camera Update" see -> [Root] RockMyMoto (Yes, even the first OTA)
Locked Bootloader with initial shipping rom see -> [Root/Write Protection Bypass] MotoX (no unlock needed)
UNLOCKED bootloader see -> https://plus.google.com/110773150384694258853/posts/VhtJtg92sTP
NOTE: these should work across all carrier variants of the Moto X. that means ATT, VZW, TMO, TIM, Rogers, etc.. should be able to use these. You just need to pick the right process based on your ROM or locked vs unlocked bootloader.
[Q] Once I root, can I accept an OTA update on my phone?
[A] If you have rooted with SlapMyMoto, RockMyMoto, PwnMyMoto, or have otherwise replaced stock recovery, then please do not let your phone try to install any OTA updates!!!
As stated in another Question/Answer, using JCASE's SlapMyMoto, RockMyMoto and PwnMyMoto to root will replace your recovery to allow for the ability to boot with R/W permitted. When the OTA update downloads to your phone, and it tries to reboot to install it, the phone/update is trying to use the stock recovery to install the update. Since it is not there, the update will fail and the phone will reboot and it will likely try to reboot and try to install again. This can often result in the phone being stuck in a boot loop of continually retrying to reboot and install the update. There are ways to fix this posted in other threads. NOTE: there may be ways to get around this and install the OTA zip but that is a topic for another thread.
If you have an unlocked bootloader and have installed a custom recovery, it might be possible to install the OTA ZIP manually, but again that is a topic for another thread.
[Q] Can I unlock the Bootloader on my Moto X? or How do I know if I can unlock my bootloader or not?
[A] If you have a Developer Edition Moto X, yes you can unlock the bootloader and it doesn't void your device warranty. If you have a MotoMaker or Carrier Branded model, it depends on IF your carrier allows Motorola to do it, and it will void your warranty. For example, Verizon and ATT does now allow Motorola to unlock your boot loader. T-Mobile users can unlock their bootloader but it will void their warranty.
To see if your Moto X bootloader can be unlocked visit -> https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth You can step through the process until you get to the final submit WITHOUT voiding your warranty. Based on the site's wording, once you hit the final submit to request the code, your warranty is voided (unless your phone is a developer edition)
[Q] How do I run a custom rom on my X?
[A] SlapMyMoto and the like is/are not a process to allow you to run custom roms.
Unless you have an unlocked bootloader, you can't remove the Stock Motorola ROM and run a completely custom rom. And because most X owners generally agree the stock X ROM is very good, there are not many custom roms available for the X, even for those with unlocked bootloaders. Any available custom roms are posted in -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development so please use those threads for info/discussions.
If you have locked bootloader, there are a few options for using Safestrap to allow for some customization or "alternate roms", but that is a topic which doesn't apply to this thread.
So what can we really do after we gain root. The obvious is run apps that require root but what else? I am a user and follow directions from devs on how to do things. So without the knowledge or experience of the deep pits of android what can I do with root? This root process looks a little tough but I could figure it out once I piece all the threads together to understand it better.

Looking to unlock bootloader & root. What's best? Advice please!

So this is my first Motorola android device.
Got it second hand last weekend. And I have already sent it to Motorola's repair centre. SBE UK. I received it back today.
I was having battery problems and problems when resetting phone and not being able to then set it up properly. They have 'repaired' the device which seems OK.
Just now I'm looking to root the stock app. Mainly for xposed and gravity box and ad blocking. As I'm happy with the rest.
It is the XT1572. Running latest MM stock 6.0 rom. Now can I unlock bootloader and flash a custom recovery and root this MM rom?
Also having to unlock the bootloader is the only option available using the Motorola option and getting my unique unlock code? As that will 'void' warranty.
Also if I do unlock, flash a custom recovery and root. Is it easy to get back to stock if needed.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the polite reply. I know how to root and flash a custom recovery. But every device is different. I have come from a one plus one so know what's what.
But haven't come across a system's root. And I couldn't find a stock factory firmware/rom for my UK variant of the 6.0 rom. But thanks for your help.

Your questions have all been covered. No one is trying to be rude. There is just no reason to rehash well covered topics that with a little searching and reading you could find the answers. Everything you asked i learned in less than an hour just doing searches here on xda.
As far as restoring to stock, i haven't really looked too much into it. However i believe you can find the stock ROM on Motorola website for developers. Don't have a link but I have come across it to see if they offered it.
No it's fine I've done it all now just never come across systemless root before. And with the one plus one always had a route to get back to factory stock. Plus just wanted to know about the unlocking procedure and if Motorola do refuse to repair phone if it's requested it's unlocking code. I've got a few questions about systemless rooting which I couldn't find when I searched. But I'll just carry on and keep questions to a minimum in the q/a section. Thanks guys.
