Now that more people have gotten their phones, can you guys chime in and say whether you have a lose volume rocker.
My volume rocker is lose and makes a little rattle when I tap it with my finger, I can also move it side to side. My power button is perfectly solid however.
I have a 6P
My first one had this issue, (along the with a raised back panel and some cosmetic marks on the bezel).
Second one was fine though. Pity I had to RMA that one as it got stuck in the official Folio case.
Third one was fine too.
No mine doesn't do this. Solid volume rocker and with good fitment. My power button however, DOES sound off every now and again. Can't always reproduce it.
Mine is fine. Just as I would expect build quality wise and power button is also fine.
Yes I also have the raised back panel as well.
Google is now claiming that lose buttons are not a good enough reason to RMA devices and that it's simple offset tolerances that should be accepted by the customer.
They know about the issue and are trying to sell it off by saying it is acceptable to have rattling buttons because they allow tolerances in the build.
This is a simple lie by the way because something that's 1.5 millimeters wide as these buttons are, would NEVER have a tolerance of error to nearly over half of millimeter. And even if the tolerance was really that high, it would be made up by rubber inserts and mounting brackets tightly aligning and holding things in place

I've got dirt the size of a couple pixels under the touchscreen, next to the volume rockers on the left. Anyone else encountered this problem?
Also, I've been having the device for 5 months now, and the volume rocker has become far less responsive due to plastic bits falling from those square up/down keys under the cover. The ugly electronic parts are now exposed and I wonder how long until they're damaged too -- my biggest 'fear' is not being able to flash new ROMs if Volume-Down keys fail, making me unable to press it together with the power button to access the SPL.
The shiny bottom on the rear has its protruding part scratched in a symmetric ')' pattern.
My friends with the Diamond and G1 also have issues with the build quality. In all honesty, HTC could probably take a lesson from Motorola:

I probably have one from the earlier batches, and the buttons I find a bit too stiff. Would love it if they were much softer. I recently made a trip to Costco, which had a dummy phone whose buttons were much easier to press. Now, I'm wondering if later batches have softer buttons. It could be the way the dummy phone was made though...
Anyone who's ordered more than 1 phone notice any difference in the action of the buttons?
I actually exchanged my phone for a new one last week because the back button started creaking after awhile. (That was just one of several problems I had with that phone...) I think the buttons were really stiff and because of that I felt I had to press harder on the button and I think wearing down the button way too much to the point it started to creak.
The new phone I got has a much better tactile feel on the buttons now. It's a bit softer to touch and quieter.
I have my second MT4G. The first one made sometimes creaky noise on the home button but that was not the reason why I returned it. My second one doesn't have the creaky noise but the buttons are still hard to press. I come from the N1 that had soft buttons so everything with hardware buttons is a big change. I think that the buttons are more protruding on my second one; feels a bit odd but no reason to exchange this phone again.
My volume rocker is loose, it even rattles when I shake the phone (now, that is NOT the camera AF). Is that normal?
It's not "normal" per se, but it's a fairly common issue with phones in general. Google will likely replace it for you if you bought it from the play store.
The plastic buttons float in the housing over the microswitches on the motherboard... i.e. they are not mounted to the circuit board, so a certain amount of play is normal.
Mine is not loose

Some wiggle is definitely normal, but rattling is not.
Well the power button is much tighter. When I drum around on the volume rocker with my finger it "clicks", so there has to be space between it and the motherboard.
Selfmade fix for loose volume rocker - stop rattle

I faced the same problem. I noticed it after a few days of use. Every time I put a finger on the volume rocker (not even pressing it, only touching it softly) it rattles. Makes the phone sound like a cheap plastic gadget, at least it doesn't fit the overall good quality of the phone. I did not want to go through all the hassle of returning the Nexus4, so tried to fix it myself.

My volume rocker is perfectly tight now, no noise when touching it, works as it should for some days now
You don't have to open your device! If you do it right, you don't see that a fix is applied to your device from outside.

What is needed:
- Sticky tape (TESA)
- scissors
- a pair of tweezers
1) take one stripe of sticky tape, fold it in the middle so that it does not stick anymore
2) cut off two pieces, as long as the volume rocker and about 1 mm wide
3) take a pair of tweezers and fiddle the stripes around the volume rocker so they disappear between volume rocker and the case.
4) if the rattle is not gone, you may add some more and smaller pieces of folded sticky tape.
I know it sounds gaga: buy a 350€ smartphone and start tightening the loose parts with sticky tape ..... Anyway, it worked. Don't forget about the warning and to touch the thanks button if it worked for you too. Good luck.
The above works a treat! my volume rocker now feels great. Many thanks!!
My volume and power buttons wobble very slightly. I don't really mind it though since it's very slight. This is coming from an OCD person.

Mine was very noisy and loose. But after dealing with Google over the last month I cant be arsed sending it back. Feels perfect now
Yea I called google today, getting new device. Also because of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057145 I really hope the new device is good
I wasn't able to come across your post beforehand but like yourself I didn't want to deal with the exchange process, so I "fixed" it myself. I pretty much used the same process as you did but I used thick floss instead (Gum brand) and shoved 3 or 4 in there and it's now rock-solid. :victory:

Thx bro! It's works for me! but I just fiddle 1 side! the other side had no space to fiddle 1 more.
Just to give a little update: I am using this workaround since 6 months now and it still works perfectly fine and did not cause me any errors.
First off I want to start by saying that this is potentially the best piece of technology I have ever bought. I am in LOVE with the flexibility of Android (brand new iOS switch over) and the raw power and hardware of the N3.
I bought this beast a couple of days ago and I instantly noticed that the home button was a bit wiggly if I tried hard to make it wiggle. Needless to say I ran to the web and found that may others have been having the same issue but its not a deal breaker in any way. I have come to terms with it and it no longer bothers me.
What I also noticed was that the volume buttons are quite loose and shake quite a bit if I move them around with my finger. I can also hear them rattling a little bit if I shake the phone and if it vibrates there is a slight sound. Is this also standard with all N3's or are my volume rockers a one off case?
I am under a replacement warranty and getting a new piece should be no issue, but if this volume issue is a common one then I wont bother as everything else is working perfectly and I don't want to risk running into different problems with another N3.

Not seen any issues regarding Volume buttons being dodgy, only the home button. (only a small percentage tho) - Guess you just got a lemon unit, it does happen from time to time with any hardware.
I've got no problems on the home button or the volume buttons or the power button. Once you put a case on it you won't notice if it's just minor. But if it's bad, is get it changed. ..?

At first when I learned that the G5 was going to be released without the rear volume keys I was fairly disturbed, it almost made me switch to a different manufacturer. Now, after having used the G5 for a little more than month I think there's a fairly good argument for moving the volume keys once you throw the wide angle camera into the mix.
If you use the wide angle camera your finger or part of your hand would always be in the shot if the volume down key was on the back and used as the shutter. Try it out for yourself, place your finger where the volume keys would be while using the camera - it is possible to get your hand out of the way, but it would be pretty persnickety day to day.
I suppose they could have moved the key cluster further down the phone, but then you lose the ergonomic aspects of it. Conversely, you could move the camera up, but there are likely physical packaging constraints in that direction.
So, I get it LG. Still makes me sad though, maybe on the G6?
I hate that they moved the volume keys to the side of the phone. I thought it would be easy to adapt to the new position (I've had an G2 since it was released), but I still pick up the phone from the table by holding the right and left side of the phone, and I often turn the volume all the way up or all the way down because I hold the volume button.
I've never used the volume buttons as shutter keys, so that would not be a problem for me....
Bottom line; I miss the volume buttons on the back of the phone...
The only reason I liked the volume buttons on the back was because I hate seeing them stick out from the side. I know some people have complained about how hard it is to find the buttons by feel but I like the ever so slightly raised buttons on the side.
I really miss the side buttons. Coming from the G3 after 2 years it's hard to get used to again. At least the power button is still on the back.
Coming from a G2 yes I do miss the rear volume buttons, had to disable the shortcut keys for the camera on the G5. Kept taking photos while its placed in the cup holder.
It's hard to re-adapt to keys on the side - similarly once you have knock-on/off it's hard to use a device without it. LG really has some nice ideas, they need to work on execution.
If they had moved the volume rocker to the right side, I would miss them on the back. But since I hold the phone with my left hand most the time, they are perfect on the left.

Not in the slightest. I'd always hit them by accident. Now when I reach back there I know what I'm pressing.
That sounded dirty lol

Hate them on the side, but it does make more sense if you use it to take photos , especially with the wide angle lens. I don't like the feeling of the side buttons, but a case solved it completely.
They left the power button on the back, I wish they left the volume keys too.
Took a little getting used to having used the G2 for so long but it dont bother me anymore, at least we have the fingerprint scanner on the back, makes unlocking a breeze, never used to use a lock screen with the G2 just because i was to lazy to input a sequence/pin. With the G5 my finger naturally seems to fall in place with the fingerprint scanner as i pick my device up to support support.
...but emulation

This might be one of my only disappointments in the physical design of this phone. As I am an avid user of emulators (PSX, PSP, Dolphin) I often have my phone mounted on a Gamepad. With the old volume keys, access was much easier. unfortunately, some of the emulators do not provide a reverse landscape option and my volume roller is tucked near the top of the controller, making access a little more difficult. Does it deter my interest in the phone? Hardly, if any. However, I also have a phone mount for my road bike (haven't jumped on board with the GoPro crowd just yet), and this particular mount often reaches the volume down key if I opt to center the phone on the mount. Otherwise, I am fearful of the phone falling out of the mount due to me having to clip closer to the bottom of the phone.
Now that I have vented-- Overall, I am very pleased with the rest of the design, as well as the potential of the modular aspect (confident a PS Vitaesque type controller mount will become available at some point). I am also highly satisfied with the speed and performance, as well as compatibility, with each emulator I have used. Overall 9.5/10 from me. :good:
I fully agree. If there is some reason for not putting them on the back that is related to the camera, please fix it. Never once during the time I owned the G4 did I make any significant, accidental changes to the volume. WIth the G5 it is always happening.
LG....please bring back the rear volume buttons.
