Change boot screen? - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way we can change the boot screen animation on the Turbo 2 yet? It seems like unlocking the bootloader is possible with the Moto X Force but TBD on the Turbo 2. I know that will open up a lot more options, but until then that whole blue ice Turbo 2 animation is really tacky.

I dunno, if you ever had to restart your phone late at night, I'd take one giant "DROIIIIIID" eyeball vs the 30 seconds of random there music playing when the DT2 reboots.
One of the first things I do with root is disable boot sounds and camera sounds.

Bigger boot animation, like DROID?

I noticed that the DROID boot animation is like 2x as big as the nexus one's boot animation. Anyway to get the bigger boot screen? Port from droid maybe?
I've no idea, just wanted to ask why?
You see it for like 5 seconds when you turn the phone on. It's not going to impress anyone...

well i don't want to sound like an ass, but obviously, i started this thread for a reason.....
Since i figure both DROID + N1 boot screens are animated, unlike MT3G or G1, there might be a port out there for the bigger boot screen. And i don't think it should be too hard since they are both Android 2.X?
Indulge me: what does the Droid's boot screen look like? Tried to search on youtube and all I saw were custom boot screens.

Finally i have my atrix! My mini review

Ok, here are my first impressions so far. Android is mostly unknown in Venezuela so i don't have any prior experience to relate to, but i do have an ipod touch 4g to compare with the OS and such.
-The phone refused to do anything without a sim card, either valid or invalid. As soon as i inserted my invalid sim card, i could do the blur wizard on WiFi and continue.
-Screen is rather nice, it's not AMOLED, but since i haven't owned any AMOLED devices (ipod is lcd) i don't feel it sucks in comparison. Some text is a little blurry, colors not that rich, but i like it.
-Phone seems speedy. Flash on a webpage indeed worked and didn't seem laggy. Except pinch to zoom way sucks, it's isn't fluid anywhere, iOS definitely wins here.
-Camera is better than i expected, since i expected purple pics. Seems ok. Shot 720p video, 20 seconds is 30 MB, huge!
-Alarms won't work with the phone off. This sucks, i don't want to leave the phone on when sleeping (want to save the battery, i don't want any type of data sync). I know i can put it on airplane mode, but it sucks. Every phone i have owned for 15 years has been able to wake itself on. Also, no auto on or auto off like my blackberry does. I know that there are apps for auto off (tasker?), but still this sucks.
-LED is tiny, doesn't do much by its own, needs external apps
-Blur isn't that bad, maybe because i haven't added any account to it. I installed facebook and twitter separately from the market, and am using the gmail app.
-Just enabled usb debugging, installed moto drivers, i see it under adb, time to root! Already purchased unlock code, will wait for it. Update: rooted with aroot, works fine so far.
-I want to make the display turn off at 30 seconds and the device to only lock after 5 minutes. While i have seen an option "security timer", i put it at 5 minutes but after 30 seconds i still needed to draw the finger horizontally to unlock it. Maybe i am not understanding this properly
please let us know when you unlock your phone to tell us if your wifi is working or not.
many users are reporting that when they unlocked their phone, their wireless no longer works.
and where did you get your unlock from " when you do "
Congrats and nice constructive review. Get root and you'll start to appreciate more. I was using an IPhone 4 and the screen didn't seen quite as nice but my eyes have adjusted rather well and i'm really enjoying the Atrix.
It has so much more, I dont think I could ever use the fruit phone again. Have fun

The LCD screen color in the Atrix is all wrong. The yellow looks lime green and this is not sure even if it's software fixable!

actually its, nexus S users have been having same problem and VOODOO was released and now they have a program that adjust the colors based on your desire.
now they dont have pink gray in low brightness or yellowish white screen " those are the issues they used to have "
so all you need is to wait to get this rooted. and by the look of it, we are not very far from it according to the recent development in the last couple of days.

thats encouraging. good to hear that someone got his atrix wifi to work after the unlock. been alot of bad wifis recently
if my wifi stops working after unlocking i will flash the sbf that has been leaked. some users are saying this fixes their problems.
A couple of questions:
Can you configure the time that the display turns off independently of the time that the device locks? I want to turn off the display after 30 seconds, but only want the device to lock after 5 minutes. I have seen an app to disable locking , but not exactly what i want.
My only workaround for the alarm issue is to go on airplane mode and kill all apps before going to sleep. That way i can leave the phone on and the alarm works, but i would have to open again gmail and twitter manually each morning. I have seen a paid app that lets you configure certain tasks (tasker) but wanted to know if there is an alternative.

The Search for Android Degauss Effects

Earlier today I got into a discussion about CRT monitors with a bunch of nerds. We all spoke lovingly of the ffffffTWWAANGGGGGGG noise that degaussing makes and the general benefits of doing this action periodically to your screens. One of the gentlemen in the room mentioned that his Motorola Droid Evo 4g has a screen flicker and washout much like a crt that needs a degaussing.
This led me to wonder, "Why hasn't the dev community created a degaussing application for our phones?" After all, we spend dozens to hundreds of hours and dollars in modification to and accessorizing our phones. Why not take it a step further and make sure that the screen itself has an even longer life?
So who is with me dev scene? I'm to damn stupid to develop this application as my fundamental knowledge of how linux actually works on a ground level is severely lacking. I implore one of you randy fancypants out there: Please help nerds have that delicious fffffTWANNGGGG again.
Edit: I just realized this would be much better suited for general android application development. Can a mod move it?
hey matey, this would be a great idea, however lcd's dont need deguassing lol
althought it would be amazing as a screen on animation or a timeout animation lol
i can see why you want a degaussing feature but i dont really think its necessary and that's wiithout taking into account its impossible lol.
degaussing is he method of clearing magnetic interferance and other electrostatic interferences out of the screen that just dont effect a lcd screen which is one of the benifits of them
great idea though!!
Okay well that being said I think it would be a fantastic boot animation/noise.
of course ! that would be amazing, using it as animation and boot animation would be cool... have you seen the CRT animation for screen off and on, its on cyanogen mod roms its pretty neat!

I tricked a nephew of mine to trade an old samsung S4g vibrant (tmobile) with a relatively new Galaxy Y. I wanted to play around with an older phone for tweaking experiments and I noticed after a month now (and 5 Roms and several wipes) that a shadow of the android keyboard shows up everytime the screen displays a white background. It does not show up on black though and it reminds me of the old degauss issue with crt monitors.... Is there any solution for this?

This sounds exactly like LCD burn-in. I don't think there's much you can do about it if the screen already shows ghost images like that.
A fake degauss would be a great animation for a FC, but since something is already crashing, wouldn't the animation have trouble playing smoothly, especially full-screen?
(Apologies for the junk post, but I'm trying to get enough posts to give feedback on stuff in the Dev section.)

Canadian Moto X First Impressions

Hey all,
I managed to get a Canadian Moto X. I noticed there are other dumps from Verizon and AT&T. Would anyone be interested in the Canadian system dump?
I've never done a system dump, but I doubt it's something I can't do. If anyone is interested, and can point me to the right direction; I'd be more than happy to supply the dump.
Tried following this guide:
http://www.ehow.com/how_12211911_system-dump-android.html
But I can't get it to work. Seems I need su/root access. I'll research further, but would be faster if someone can point me to the right direction!
Edit: Photo attached. Cuz someone will eventually say "Pic or it didn't happen".

Brief history:
Major iOS nerd. Made my living from iOS dev (didn't sell apps, but worked on projects on the iOS platform). Always have been an Android follower, though. Have all the Nexus devices, but they always end up sitting in the drawer. Owned a few non-Nexus phones, HTC, Commtiva (uggh), Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4.
Quick overview:
• The white is nice, but I can see it getting dirty quick. The surface of the backplate is very smooth to touch. Somewhat slippery (doesn't offer traction whatsoever) despite having a weaved carbon fibre look, I expected it to feel a bit "rough", like unpolished CF.
• Device itself feels magnificent. Has a substantial feel to it, yet it weighs less than the Nexus 4. The device is heavy at the top (speaker top), which I find to be a clever design, it rests on my palm better as it would rest on the middle & index fingers better. That dimple in the middle, feels awesome too. It's the equivalent on dimples on keyboards (F & J keys), it's there to let you know how to hold the phone the right way.
• Speaking of palm, I have a slightly larger than average palm size, and the device feels just right. It's not overly big. Which is one of the primary reasons why I wanted to check out the phone. The 4.7 display feels oddly more fitting, than the Nexus 4, thanks to the much smaller bezel. Less shimmying the device to reach the back button.
• Had a tad bit of problem setting up Touchless Control, because it was so fussy about zero ambience noise. Had to find a dead silent room. Way too fussy.
• Active Notifications, something I can't live without anymore; and it's only been a day! I think this is a very Apple-ish feature; except Motorola beat them to it (or Apple isn't into AMOLED screens).
• Battery life, I don't know. Seems to hold longer charge better than my S4. I intentionally let the phone run without charging it since last night. I wanted to see a real life test. I'm sure the smarter guys/reviewers will be doing a much more through/scientific test than I will be.
• The additional features (Assist, Switcher, Motorola Connect) are quite useful and not gimicky! I didn't read any reviews prior to getting the phone (that's just how I roll) and I was pleasantly surprised to see Assist! If you're unfamiliar, it's a Do Not Disturb app, similar to iOS 6's, with additional features (mute during meetings, driving mode). Implementation is quite the same as iOS 6's.
• The OS feels very AOSP. There's some random customization here and there, but very very bare. I can't find any thing that is not within the Holo guideline. It's super responsive, despite being a dual core CPU. Motorola must've done some major optimization to get 4.2.2 to run like this. It feels faster than the TouchWiz ROM on the S4; probably because Moto X isn't bloated.
• Another nice surprise is to see a "Google" folder on the home screen. All of the Google apps, preloaded. It might be a turn-off for some, but I thought that was a nice addition. I mean, Motorola being a Google company…
• There are a few visual glitches, Navbar being semi transparent and if that's intentional, then it's not "right" because most wallpapers don't fit the 4.7", leaving a good 20 DIP solid black navbar.
• I'm not used to seeing a carrier label on the top left corner. Nexus 4 didn't have this. I much prefer not to see this at all.
• Oddly enough, I have not seen any Rogers' bloat! There is a teensy bit of hope!
Edit:
• My phone says "eh" and "aboot".
thanks for the info! i went to rogers here in ottawa and they had one black one left, but they wouldnt sell it outright to me, so im trying to find one

Active notifications: Do you ever find the "pulsing" to be annoying? For example, if you have the phone face up on your desk, is it annoying to have to wait until the active notification lights up before you can check your messages/know if you have a message at all? I love the concept of active notifications, but I want to be able to not wait for it to come up.
Nav bar: I think that's intentional. No way they would overlook that part. I never liked the transparent nav bar anyways.
Carrier label: I've seen some reviews or videos that didn't have the label on the top left and am disappointed that it's there. I'm sure I would find it annoying as well so hopefully we can find a way to nuke it.
TIP: Maybe you should renamed this thread into the impressions thread? I could see it taking off. Or maybe just copy your post into a fresh thread with an appropriate title? Be a good place to aggregate all the impressions for this strange phone that many people are unsure of buying.

Pulsing: Not at all. It's a good design, IMHO. if the screen is off, then there's nothing to worry about. Look at it from the "no news is good news" perspective. The same design as LED blinks! Since you asked, it's clever (IMHO) that you would have to grab your phone for the screen to display the time. At least I don't have to press the lock screen button to check the time.
Nav Bar If this is intentional, then that's a very strange design decision. My live wallpaper won't fit flushed against the 1280 height.
Carrier Label Yea. I can't wait for a root access! Need to get rid of this bloody thing. Check screenshot. BTW, I unlocked my phone, that's why it's showing as Koodo.

I've always made my LED "always on" instead of pulsing. Guess I'd have to change my habits with the X. And like you said, maybe it's for the better that I don't constantly jump to my phone. As an additional question: if you have an outstanding notification, how often/in what intervals does it pulse? Does it pulse slower as the notification is not checked after a while? If you have no notifications at all, how often does it pulse? (Sorry, just very intrigued by these notifications)
The transparency of the bar is intentional, but I assume the wallpaper isn't isn't and it would actually be odd that they overlooked that part. This isn't an issue for me though as I always hide by nav bar and use LMT.
And yeah, I would definitely need to get rid of that label...ugh. Question, what is up with your homescreen? Can't be a ROM cause it's too early so is it some launcher?

Additional Questions: Let me investigate this further. I need to study the behaviour anyway (I'm a UX guy).
Edit: With 2 different types of notifications, the screen pulses every six seconds-ish. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen the screen pulse/breath without any pending notification.
What is it with my homescreen that you find odd? The lack of icons? I just picked an empty page. I'm running Action Launcher.
Edit: yea, it's an Action Launcher issue, wallpaper not fitting correctly. The native launcher fits the wallpaper flushed! Sorry, Moto! I spoke too soon!

Interesting.
Is it possible to make the AN (active notification) show up by quickly covering the light sensor and then uncovering it? This would simulate taking the phone out of your pocket. I assume it works, but wonder how well. Could be a nice little trick to get the AN to pop.

It seems like a combination of a few sensors. Covering the device doesn't activate AN. However, moving it about will bring up AN. So, gyroscope based?

You're a horrible reviewer, no cookie for you!
More seriously, thanks for posting about this. I'll throw in some more questions:
- You say the back is smooth, but is it soft-touch or a hard surface?
- How much free space was there before you put Action Launcher on it?
- Some reviews noted that whites have a pink tint to them - is this true for yours?
- How's the speaker phone sound quality?
- Do you connect it up to your work email? If so, does Assist allow you to stop it from synching overnight?

Moto X has a notification light!

Forgive me if this has already been found but the Moto X has a notification light. Everywhere I've read including critic reviews said the moto x only has its active notification system.
I stumbled upon this with my defective moto maker xt1053. Somehow it came with a corrupt system from factory that even rsd lite couldn't fix. Anyway, I have a replacement on the way but I've had no way to turn it off. This morning I was playing around with it and plugged it in via USB to my computer. Battery graphic popped up as it would anytime you plug in with the phone powered down. The phone then showed 0% and to my surprise, a bright green led light long-blinks through the speaker grill!
My question now is... Is there anyway to enable the light under normal circumstances? I love active notifications, but if my phone is face up, I'd like to know if I have a text, etc with out picking up the phone.

You don't have to pick up the phone to see active notifications. They will pulse (just like an led) until dismissed.

That's pretty sick if it's not a hoax. Looks like an alien phone ?
I just tried the framework changes from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43281267&postcount=8
It did not work.
I tried disabling/enabling "active display", but it didn't help.
I'm surprised this hasn't been found before and hacked to work as an ordinary led notification light.
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone...
If I didn't have a busted phone I would never have known. On android central someone else mentioned that the light will turn on when plugged in without enough battery to activate the led screen. Has anyone tried the notification light widget from Motorola? Supposedly that gets the moto g light to turn on. If that doesn't work then perhaps it is a kernel setting? I would love to play around to get this working but until my replacement arrives I'm stuck. The picture I took was dumb luck. I kept plugging it in until I could snap a picture fast enough with my nexus 5 to catch it. It looks really cool coming through that grill... Even if it is only green. Its more of a bar than just a single light but perhaps thats an effect of the metallic grill.

I love active notifications, but would still like using this for some things. It looks pretty awesome when lit as far as your pic shows.
Hard to believe it isn't controlled by the OS.
Yes someone found this early on in the Motos realease. It was eventually concluded that it is not in any part of the system framework so any kind of software changes wouldn't be able to enable it. It is independently attached to the batteries circuit.

Nice find!
Seriously... What an opportunity wasted... Especially since they put it in such a neat spot. To place an LED there in that spot in such a clever way and then never have it do anything with the OS seems like such a waste.

?
anyone opened it up yet to see if there is an alt/ place to solder the light to? or am i just crazy....
EDIT: i've seen a few phones i've opened up have extra contact points for random little things but hey its entirely possible
You could do that but definitely not worth shorting out your $500 phone accidentally IMO
From the user manual:
Low Battery LED:
This LED lights up when you plug in your
charger and the smartphone’s battery level is too low to
power on the display. It means that your smartphone is
charging and will be ready to use shortly.

Seen some posts about this before and so far no one has been able to make use of it otherwise
Hah most of us haven't seen it because our battery life is so great
I've actually never had the motox run out of juice on me.
