DO I HAVE TO ROOT MY PHONE TO INSTALL THIS STOCK ROM VIA CWM , AS GIVEN IN THIS LINK >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1758884
i think not since OP did not mention any root or SU privileges needed
but just to be safe,
root it
as per experience with installing different roms, from installing fresh stock rom which is not rooted to flashing custom roms. i was able to install it successfully. but just to be safe, root it as mentioned by deathnotice.
for me rooting 1st is prioterize cause example installing tweaks somekind needs root previlage... for me thats my opinion
There is no harm in rooting. That stock rom is rooted anyway
CWM Install
hi..
No you dont need root, just need CWM recovery installed..
Cheers

You don't need to root your phone to flash a custom or stock rom. The simple reason is that all custom roms are pre-rooted roms with superuser pre-installed and flashing of stock roms doesn't need rooting. Don't forget to back up your stock rom and kernel via cwm recovery if you didn't own a pc as a safety measure in case you wanted to revert back to it in the event of bootloops or otherwise. If you do have a pc, it is not necessary as you can flash back to stock rom and kernel via odin. If you don't know how to flash via odin search the forum for tutorial. In case if you don't have any odin flashable firmware package, it is advisable that you create a back up. Sorry for the long reply.

Yes you can apply ota update via twrp recovery. For this just follow following steps(On your own risk) by the way following method worked for me to apply latest 5.8.0.19s update.
1) Download the latest ota update it should be located here (internal storage/data/com.letv.android.ota/files/otaUpdates) folder.
2) There should be a zip file just cut and paste it in root folder for easy process.
3) Now boot to TWRP recovery and flash zip file which is pasted in root folder.
4) Now format dalvik cache and if you want root, then root again because due to flashingnew rom root access and all other changes you have done in system will lost but all your data will be safe... (This method is usefull for same type of rom i.e. from stock rom to stock rom or custom rom to custom rom).
5) Just for your knowledge 5.8.0.19s update file is full rom file but if you want other versions such as 5.8.0.16s then use offline update packages which are full size i.e. around 1.7 gb.
Also you can flash root since twrp comes with inbuild root tools just locate it in twrp recovery in advanced/tools/root.
Also you can install stock rom just after flashing stock rom in place of any custom rom just wipe data and factory reset and then apply root. and reboot normally.
I have bought an LG G6 (US997) and planning on rooting it.
Can it be rooted and keep the stock ROM?
TIA
Yes course it can lol.
Yeah you can
I have rooted h870 with stock rom but when you get a new ota you can't install then you need a zip file for the new update and install it with your twrp
Thanks for the replies!
So, the G6 will be rooted the moment I unlock the bootloader?
No ! after unlocking the bootloader you need to install twrp and root ( superSu or Magisk ) for your phone but before doing it your phone need to be a free carrier
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/development/recovery-twrp-lg-g6-us997-unofficial-t3629883
So you have 3 steps
1-Unlock bootloader
2-Flash twrp
3-Flash root
Good luck and be carefull to no brick your phone or lose your data
You should really do some more research before doing this. You clearly don't have a clue.

When you say Flash root , do I simply install SuperSU? If yes, what method of installation works? Play Store, ADB, or TWRP?
Thanks again.

I'd recommend Magisk over SuperSU at this point. Download the Magisk zip and flash it with TWRP.
If you don't root immediately after installing TWRP, your phone will revert to the stock recovery on the next boot.
Try this guide, it will answer some of your questions:

I'm a newbie to this, so I'll be very very grateful if I get step by step instructions. I need to do all of this without a PC (don't have access to one), so please help me out!
So after getting my new mobile (4gb if that matters) today, I was thinking of using Kingo root to root, then use Flashify to flash TWRP, new ROM, Magisk, and Viper. Please guide me!
First you need to unlock bootloader with help of PC then flash twrp and take backup of old rom and flash new rom. You cannot root without unlocked bootloader.
