Monthly patch updates - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I just got the November OTA and, rather like a full release, it's taking forever to install - working through every app, etc.
I get that security updates are important, but is this something we're going to have deal with every month from now on? It reminds me a bit of Windows's eternal sporadic updates - one reason I switched to Macs some time back.

Learn to be patient.
Also, why did you buy a Nexus if you don't want the latest platform+security updates?

There is usually a way to turn off update notification if you don't want to be bothered with updates .

People don't get latest updates = complain. People get latest updates = complain. Seems like there is no satisfaction on either side.

Oh, I'm a million percent in favour. I'm just surprised that this seems to take as long as installing an entirely new OS every time, rather than simply patching over issues. NB: this may be a total MORONIC statement, in which case duh @ me.

I doubt google envisioned the need for monthly updates. They'll get better at it but it may take a while.

That's because the update cleared the cache, so all the apps need to be precompiled again. If you have a lot of apps, then have some patience. Or you can do the upgrade at night before you go to bed, and you will have a fresh new OS waiting for you the next morning.

my update was quick. i started it and jumped into the shower and by the time i was done it was done. i then wiped the cache as i always do after all OS updates.

Monthly Security Updates

Hey all I have a purely stock unrooted nexus 6p that I am trying to figure out why I am getting the monthly update a week before the release of the next update ever time. I am thinking its ATT blocking the updates. Can you please post the carrier, date and time when you received the May update please?
VZW and mine showed update on the 13th. Was starting to wonder when I'd see it, but it finally hit.
Still waiting here on Sprint for the update. This is taking forever.

I have Project Fi and get my updates rather late too. It's not just you.
If you really want the update, then by all means flash it manually as soon as it comes out.
I don't think that the carrier can actually block the update, unless you somehow bought the 6P carrier-branded, and through the carrier. That being said, I've been on Tmo, Fi, VZW, and Straight Talk, and I have never actually received a monthly security update as soon as they are released. Usually I had to wait a couple of days. I think those updates roll out randomly, so I'd say just keep waiting, or flash it yourself.
Nexus updates are known to be pushed out in stages.
If you are desperate just flash the images via fastboot or sideload the ota via adb.
Yes I know I can side load the update. That is not the point of this post. Its to get an idea of timing of when people are getting the updates and what carriers they are on.
Google releases there updates in a phased approach. They first release it to 1% all the way up to 100%. 100% should be getting the update within 2 - 3 weeks. The 2 -3 week period I have yet to see!
What I was trying to determine is if this is the carriers blocking the updates till a specific time or its google just not pushing updates to the phones like they say they are.
Note ATT is notorious for blocking updates. And yes they can block the update as long as your using there network to check.
If Google is releasing security updates on a monthly bases and you don't get it before the next update is released, whats the use in a monthly update???

How do you side load. I just saw that google has released images to do that. I too have a 6p completely stock. I want to keep the bootloader locked. I have never had a nexus device before. So this is new to me I always used Samsung. The problem with Samsung is you have to mod the hell out of it. this phone just works like it is supposed to. but I do want to try to update manually. So I followed the instructions in the general section and I am installing the sdk as we speak. So what is the process for side loading and where do I get the update? My phone gets its updates really late in the month and I hate waiting. Also I booted this phone into recovery and tried to do a factory reset but it didn't do it and there were all these options I am not used to. How do I do a basic factory reset from recovery? I would like to know just in case. I am not wanting to go crazy with this phone but I do want to understand it so when I get the nexus 7 I can play with this one when I get spare time.

ZE551ML 6.0 Link?

Hey all,
Since the ota download for 6.0 has been pulled I was wondering if anyone had a chance to grab it before it went down?
Thanks
I did

Is there an chance you can post it for us that missed out?
Wait
I have it as well - but wouldn't want to post it. It's a beta release, and as such, you won't get future OTA updates (at least until the official release comes out), and will have to update manually, and will have to wipe/reset to avoid issues going from beta to official. I really regret not waiting for the official, but hopefully fixing it won't be more of a hassle than upgrading was. I don't like that I'll have to set up everything again, but it is what it is, and as long as I get back on official so I can get future updates all will be well. It'll be better to wait, especially since the beta has bricked many people's phones (I got lucky, mine works flawlessly), and you won't have to go through extra bullcrap to get back on the official releases.

It's a pain that we'll have to stick to beta for now, judging from the other variants that asus release marshmallow before it will take a month or less(eg: Zenfone Max, mm beta release on 1st week of may, mm official release on 1st week of june), sad for us non-modder users.

Well, at least I don't have to dread setting up my phone again too soon. I just really hope going from beta to official will be just as simple as upgrading from L to M was.

I have the FW on my phone but really hesitant to upgrade after seeing the comments.. Better to wait a few more days rather than brick the phone...

Definitely wait for official, the beta release really worked well for me but I'm lucky, and now I'm dreading having to figure out how to get back on an official release so I'll get updates in the future - and I'll have to set up my phone from scratch again.
I did upgrade to 6.0, so far i've experienced a bit of lag and battery drain( lot worse than .184)
Same here, upgrade went fine but now some significant battery drain taking place; I can guess why, the phone is now constantly warm and the system monitor utility shows that the processor spends some serous time at higher clock frequencies.
Also experiencing some microSD card disconnects, from time to time, for no apparent reason.
All in all, it wasn't a bad update though [emoji57]
Initially I also had really heavy battery drain after updating, but doing a factory reset and reinstalling my apps afresh seemed to fix. Now getting basically the same battery life as before the update, which is to say neither great nor terrible. Am very pleased with the improved RAM management after updating though - it is releasing RAM much better than before and running very smoothly.

Any news about when will axon 7 get android N update?

I'm developing game for google daydream(their new vr platform) and zte axon 7 seems to be the cheapest android phone that is daydream ready. The problem is that in order to work daydream needs android N. Do you know what are their plans for releasing update on their phones/how fast they did it before?
At a rough guess I'd say that it will be some time after Google eventually release it. I also vaguely remember something somewhere about Daydream not being part of the initial release of Nougat but coming shortly after although a quick search has thrown up nothing.
I'm betting first quarter of 2017. I'd be shocked if it was before the new year.
Everything I've read is pointing to this year for the update they are selling it as "the first daydream phone" and I've read multiple places that they want to get it updated asap.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Every manufacturer says they want to update ASAP but all of them take longer than they claim.
Imagine if they "rushed" it out full of bugs and things breaking. As much as we depend on these things for life itself, I am happy if they take their time, do it right the first time, then release it! I work in IT and I know from first hand experience over 22 years that you're much better off doing it right the first time then to have to go back and hopefully fix the errors!
Apparently ZTE is part of the group of oems that have early access to the source of this new Android release. As they actively market this phone as "daydream" ready I'd assume they want it to work.
heck until today we had no idea when android would be released (supposedly mid to late August).
I think it will be before November when Daydream will come.
It's really close to daydream release date, are there any news about the android 7.0/7.1 update now?

To Update or Not!

Hi guys!
Just wanted a few suggestions. I have a SM-G935FD and currently running G935FXXU1BPH firmware. Some time ago I had received the OTA update for BPIO. Am still wondering if one should update the phone or not. I am happy with my current setup and battery life, and historically whenever I have updated samsung phones they have led to some or the other bugs and poorer battery life. The only compelling reason is the security patches. What is the view of people out here? Can one continue to use his phone as stock always if he is happy with the performance or should you always do the OTA updates?
I think, if you happy with current version and the next version doesn't has useful features(read update change log) then you should keep it.
Sent from my SM-G935FD using Tapatalk
The update changelog usually don't say anything. It is just a "standard" text to inform you that the update MAY contain security updates, fixes or new features. You never don't know exactly what is changed or added...not from that log anyways. Best thing is to check over the Internet by the update code to find a detailed changelog but that's also hard to find.
I would advice to update tho, regardless of your past experiences. Most of the time updates contain bug fixes and/or security patches and they are also incremental. That means that, even if you don't update now, at some point, when a big update will come containing new features for ex, you'll want to upgrade. And that update will contain also previously skipped updates. Nobody tries to ruin your end user experience, especially on a high end phone like this and for sure they have a high quality control in place. But as everyone knows, there are bugs and flaws that could cause issues in some specific cases.
On S6 Edge and my current S7 Edge I had several updates and none brought me an issue...so go ahead.

Perosnally I don't understand why you wouldn't update.
I'm on 1BPH and no updates available at the moment.. Haven't had an update since I've had the phone
Received mine several days ago, haven't had an update.

Well the only reason I don't feel like updating is that I have the mortal fear of bugs and bad battery life. In all previous experiences with android, updates mostly gave issues (mostly used Samsung and LG). Also its so difficult to know what are the changes being made.
We have no way to know that companies are actually injecting bugs to reduce battery or performance once their next flagship phones are out! So that customers are compelled to upgrade! Infact so many of friends and family have given this opinion that android phones don't last. After a year or too it becomes buggy or slow. Whereas look at apple my Ipad 2 still gets updates and battery is phenomenal!
I know most of what I am saying may be more of hunch but that's the reason I was wondering what others think about it...

Simply put, it is a gamble. Ask anyone who had the phone in March, then updated to April and got Android System drain and 6-7 hour SOT down to 4-5 lol. There is a 200+ page thread and the only known thing in there is that Samsung update on the S7 series have made battery life dog poop (compared to what it used to be).
Even those who claim great battery life, would have more if they flashed March firmware again. I flashed the most recent update and it was OK. Nothing special. Went back to March though, battery took a massive hit. I'd say stay where you are if things are running smoothly. I ain't updating till Nougat or till they fix Android System burning through 20-30% of the battery.

Exactly my point. When you buy the phone you know what you are buying and what is expected. However once you update that control goes back to the supplier who may ruin or improve you experience!!
Which firmware are you referring to? Please share the link.

why so long for updates on dp

Why is it taking so long to get the updates to the 6p lately? I noticed this a while back that the 6 and the 5x and the n7 and pixel the tablet not phone get their updates together and the 6p is a little while after that. Even the monthly security updates come a little later now. I am just wondering if it's something with huweia. I am getting nervous that we won't see the next version of android. Or it will take forever to get it.

That's why we have XDA. Even if Google suddenly stops supporting the 6p, and I highly doubt we'll miss the next version, XDA can get it up. Look at the Nexus 5, it's still supported
Yeah I know. I actually haven't even rooted this phone yet and it's been about a year!!! It just works. This is my first phone that I haven't rooted I was always a Samsung guy and right out the box it got rooted and AOSP based Roms. But anyway I plan on rooting and going the customer ROM route once Google stops supporting it officially. I was just wondering if someone knew why it is just the 6p that gets late updates. The 5x came out the same time and already has 7.1.2 dp
