Band 4 (XLTE) on Verizon... - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 6P seems to be refusing to connect to band 4 which is Verizon's XLTE band in my area.(LTE discovery, Pure Nexus 11/10) My Moto Nexus 6 works just fine. Is this expected? Work around? Any advice/ ideas are appreciated.

I'm in latest MDB80M and connecting fine on Band 4.

No problems with Band 4. Stock rooted MDB80K

Ok, thats good to know. I think it may be an issue wit Pure Nexus but I cant say for sure. I will troubleshoot some more. Thanks guys.

If you enabled Enhanced LTE option under Cellular Network and your device still refuses to connect to XLTE, call Tech support at verizon and have them add Advanced wireless option (Its free). When I switched phones on my account, that feature got dropped and tech support had to add back manually and now I am able to connect to XLTE on Band 4. But my download speeds are no where near as others have claimed

I went into my Verizon account and added Advanced Calling for free. It was not on my phone. I don't know if I had connectivity to Band 4 prior to that since I didn't check
Edit: Just to clarify, I currently have Band 4 connectivity.

How can you see what bands you are connected to? I am running pure nexus and can test for you.

Use the LTE discovery app and check your band.

Yes I already had it working in stock but seems I lost it when I flashed Pure Nexus (Suspect but not sure)

Where does it say what band in the app? Pardon my ignorance, but can't tell.

Usually it doesnt connect indoors in my case. Go outside and toggle airplane mode and check again.

Alright I reset back to stock and got XLTE again. I guess something weird happened when I flashed Pure Nexus. I think I'll keep stock rooted for a while. At least I can use layers and adaway. LOL

Will not having the correct vendor image affect this? I still need to get this flashed with the correct vendor image as I'm getting that pop up.

Band 4 gets amazing speeds, I got 90Mbps down and 36Mbps up on my way to work today. Thanks for posting this OP, I was thinking about flashing Pure Nexus as well.

If you use sms you will. I did a clean install and I get it less than I did on D but still do get the occasional double on E. Also if you have enhanced LTE disabled you won't have the issue.
I have enhanced LTE enabled. On D. Haven't received duplicate sms since T-Mobile was having issues last Friday. Weird.

Yes. It's awesome. HD voice when speaking to others on tmo with capable phone. Connection is instantaneous. My phone now stays on LTE 24/7 vs switching to 3G/H when making a cell phone call. My SMS has also been turbo and is as instant as hangouts. All this since flashing 47D build (I flashed 47E too but went back to D because of a delay/lag when pushing power button for screen to come on). Tmo

Hi. I have a question for you. I'm a Tmo user as well. Does your APN say "T-Mobile GPRS" or something like "T-Mobile VoLTE". Thanks. I'm have the GPRS APN, I have Enhanced 4G LTE Mode enabled but I am having issues with my WiFi and Data fluctuating a lot, many time I get no connection while both WiFi and Data is active but I get a "No data connection" which will last for about 30 seconds or so before kicking in. This is getting really annoying. Just want to know if others are having the same issue on 5.1 Again thanks.

Poor and Spotty Verizon reception since I got the phone Oct 30th... Help?

Since having this phone since last week I've noticed reception that is worse than my previous Verizon Note 3. I live in a spotty/poor area for reception but it has been worse than ever before now on the 6P. Maybe something in the way I have it setup could help....maybe? At my house I never get 4G (even on my old Note 3 all I ever had was 3G) and at the office I used to get 4G on my Note 3 but now I only very occasionally see it show LTE above the bars at the top of the phone.
I've tried switching between Global, LTE/CDMA and LTE/GSM/UMTS under the cellular network settings and Global seems to return the best reception for me. What should be the best setting here for Verizon?
I have "Data Roaming" off; should it be on?
I have "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" on; should it be on or off?
"System Select" I have on automatic; good?
"Access Points" screen opens to APN's which I haven't touched because I have no idea what that does...any help in there???
Having used my phone for a while now I can add that I occasionally will see several bars on the reception icon at the top and then it will just vanish and show no bars. Usually my reception would bounce up and down a bit but on this phone it seems to plunge or skyrocket sporadically.
At the office (where I have better reception) I will see very good signal strength around -73dBm 8asu at times and then at other times its -117dBm 1asu or worse. At home its almost always -110 or worse...
Any thoughts on anything I could try to change to improve things or am I just out of luck with a weaker radio in this phone verses my old Note 3?
Thanks
Here's a screen shot of today's reception at the office...

I am also on Verizon and in my house the cell signal is comparable to that. I think there is just bad coverage in my neighborhood; when I go towards the city center it gets better.

How is the screen on N6P compared to Note 5?
You might want to try turning off Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. The Enhanced 4G LTE mode turns on VoLTE. If you don't have good LTE coverage, then you won't be able to make calls reliably with VoLTE turned on.
I agree with your points. I too want to figure out which is best.
This was my battery life on the first day I got it, 10/29. I had the best SOT performance when I was setting it up. Everything mostly on. Realized my coverage sucked when I saw others.

Yes, its a new sim.

Dial code to enter service menu?

I knew my Samsung dial code so I could go in and enable/disable certain LTE bands (band 12 is great for penetration for calls -but horrible on data speeds).
I would switch band 12 off while at work so I could get better speeds.

This worked, now to figure out how to turn on/off band 12 as needed
Figured it out
To lock to a specific LTE antenna go to field test, Modem settings, LTE band selection and choose the band (band 4 and 12 are right now the only ones for me in DFW)
Then to revert back to where the phone switches go back a menu and choose Network mode and set it to Auto
The other menu code is 277634*#*
also on the other one... 918 is the T-Mobile LG V20 variant, try your specific model for your carrier.

T-Mobile 6T keeps losing network connection

Is anyone else having an issue with their network connection? There are random times where I open the phone and I can't get anywhere. Apps just spin and time out saying no network connection. Although, the status bar still shows 4G LTE.

I have an unlocked 6T, using it on T-Mobile, and I was getting lots of data connection dropouts, not exactly how you described, but I would go from all bars to zero bars, then it would reconnect after 5 seconds or so. It's seemed to get quite a bit better since I turned off WiFi scanning for location purposes even when wifi is off. Can't say yet that it's fixed but it's been all good for hours now. Good luck with your issue!
I'll try that. I really want to love this phone, but I've had a few issues after only 2 days that I never once had with my LG V30.

As soon as Oreo hit the V30, I actually had network issues there too, kind of like what you described for your 6T. seem to get better after a couple of updates for me
Unlocked on T-Mobile and no issues whatsoever
I noticed I have connection issues as well. I'll close out whatever app is having problems and restart the app, but it's over multiple apps. So I'm not sure, what's causing the drop outs

This is an issue with T-Mobile's band 12. Check what band your phone is on when it does this, LTE discovery app can show you. If it is on band 12, that means the tower is congested.

Thanks for this, this used to drive me nuts on my T-Mobile V30 in Los Angeles, especially once the phone was updated to Oreo for some reason. Now on my OnePlus 6T, I was getting a lot of times where the signal just completely drops out and then reconnects usually within 5 or 10 seconds.
Cruised thru a couple different towns and had no issues with T-Mobile today

So I've been tracking the issue, been having lots of dropouts this morning here in Los Angeles. From using the app it seems like I'm usually on band 4, but when the connection drops out and reconnects, then I'm on band 2, but will be back on band 4 after a couple minutes. Do you think this is definitely the network and not my phone, I need to determine whether to send the phone back, which I don't really want to do.

Yeah that's network. The towers are kicking you off because it's congested. Unfortunately, T-Mobile doesn't have the capacity to handle the huge increase in subscribers that they have gotten over the last year or two.

Ok thanks ? Makes sense
I am experiencing the same issue not only in US but also in other countries.
You can also use signal spy to check with bands you're currently receiving, and it'll give you a good idea of what kind of coverage you're looking at. It'll specify the signal strength, type of band you're currently using, and more. Highly recommended if you want to know what your signal is looking like.

Force 4g in s10+

Am kinda in an area where 4g is super fast and 3g is suppppper slow
Anyone knows how to force 4g in s10+?
You might be able to do that through secret codes but I wouldn't recommend it. There's a reason why your phone drops to 3G. It's probably because your LTE signal is too weak. If you forced your phone to LTE only you might end up with no signal at all. And if you're not in a VoLTE area you won't be able to make phone calls.
BTW there's a Q&A pinned on top for random questions. Easier than starting a new thread ?

Simple. Dial *#*#4636#*#*. Alternatively, just use the network app. It's basically a shortcut to phone info. Mine is set to LTE only. I'm from a place where every tmobile band is available, so connectivity is a nonissue.

For some reason *#*#4636#*#* is not working on my phone which is why I didn't suggest it. My concern with his specific case is that it did drop to 3G which causes concern. Mine never does. Would he not lose all data if LTE were not strong enough in his area?

This code doesn't work using the Samsung dialer. You can download the Google dialer port and then use the code and it'll work. This is one way you can force LTE always on. You will have to set the Google dialer as your default phone app and allow permissions as well as changing system settings.
