My thoughts on the Fingerprint scanner - Nexus 5X General

It's Amazing.
And no, this isn't a case of "This feature is great because I have never used it", it's the scanner that's amazing. My iPhone 5S's touch ID would fail MULTIPLE times per day. I haven't ever experienced a fail on my nexus imprint, even when I am straight out of a shower. Did I mention it's super fast and doesn't even require tapping the power button?

The new iPhone 6s scanner is just as fast but I'm with you. This scanner is top notch. Beats the s6 by a mile

I had to put in "wet" prints for it to unlock. Yes, this is a amazing feature

My finger was mysteriously dry though... Also I purposely put some moisture on my fingers and my scanner and it works! Holy cow this is amazing compared to my 5S which won't unlock even with a dry finger.

I'm not sure I agree. I have a 6S for work and in side by side comparisons the finger print scanner on the 5X is actually just a hair faster every single time. But what I love most (about both) is that the scanner has never failed a single time for me with either phone. That's the most important part.

I have noticed that sometimes it just will not register a print no matter what position my finger is in. Its almost like the scanner stopped working, this has happened maybe two or three times. Last time it happened the phone was in airplane mode and I was just using it after my morning alarm.

Try washing your hands.

I have both the S6 and the N5X, and the 5X blows the S6's FPS out by MILES.
Like, I don't know about your guys, but my thumb naturally rests at a sideways angle when I'm in my GS6, so having my thumb scan upwards was a pain. Instead, I opted to scan it sideways. And it works... For the most part...
And that "for the most part" means that it doesn't catch my scan all the time, due to it being sideways. I actually had to set up two different positions of scans for the S6, one of the topmost of my thumb, and one for the lower part. Even then, it stills gets it about 8.5/10 times.
But my N5X, though..... Every. Single. Time.

I have never used any fingerprint scanners other than the 5S, but let's just say that Google and LG did quite an amazing job with the sensor. It works every single time. And the best thing is, the placement is quite natural. It's so natural that I am actually having trouble NOT unlocking the phone when I am just holding it.
That"s a new level of natural.

Has anyone have trouble with their fingerprint sensor not working while their phone is plugged into the charger? (stock charger)
When plugged in sometimes says "finger moved too fast" or just does not register. Cannot even add a new fingerprint while charging. The most I get is it registers the first tap then nothing.
Otherwise it works perfectly when not plugged in.

I'm the same way, it's almost annoying how easy it unlocks. Though I would rather have the problem of it unlocking too easily rather than too difficult (as has been with any other android fingerprint scanner)

ive got a chance to use the 6s rosegold.. it was fast.... but not as fast as the 5x. u never see the lockscreen.. and no need to use the click power button to unlock it

Mine has been really consistent too - I guess it's the adjustment it has you do but even if my hands are wet, dry, whatever it works great, no matter what angle you hit it at.

What be really cool if there was a way to hack it to give us a scroll feature when reading.

Nexus 5x or n6P were not the first on the fingerprint reader. But they implemented it like it should be.

I must admit, after never using any security on my phone(and always feeling a little uneasy about it) due to the incumbrance, I love the fingerprint scanner. And love the position.

+1,this is one of my favorite thing's about n5x. Sometime when having my phone laying on the table I wish the fingerprint scanner would be in front panel of device.

Favorite Thing About New Phone?

For those who have already received their device, what is your favorite thing about it coming from your old device? Also, do you have any dislikes so far? For those who are still waiting, what are you most excited for?
I'll start, I am coming from the Note 5, and have had every Note in the series except for the first. I will be pairing this with my S7 Edge and rocking both at once. My favorite thing I am looking forward to is jumping into a pool with both in pocket, and watching all my iPhone friends having heart attacks. And of course just having all the new S-Pen features and getting my 256GB Micro SD card. Your turn!!!

Notification panel is a lot easier to use, no more long pressing...
Came from a Note 2. The new S Pen is nice. I woke up this morning and started entering stuff in to S Health. The screen is nice and bright and the resolution is awesome. The phone is incredibly fast. I enabled developer options and turned off all of the animation scales. I also changed the built in content scaling from large to small to take advantage of my young eyes. The iris scanner is a cool idea but as of right now I don't use it as an option for my lock screen. I can either use a pattern or the finger print from either of my thumbs. The edge feed is cool. I reordered it to show my step count first and then notifications. The HRM (Heart Rate Monitor) sensor on the back below the flash is a cool feature. It works in conjunction with S Health. You can also use it when the phone is flipped on to it's face to ignore a call and send a message by holding your finger over it for 2 seconds. So far the phone is pretty sweet.

Damn, coming from the Note 2? This is a huge upgrade for you then. I hope you really enjoy your time with it. I literally just got it in hand and I am loving it so far. Really nice and sleek.
Yeah a big upgrade for me. My Note 2 is still pretty solid considering its age.
Being able to write a memo without unlocking the device is pretty sweet. If I need to write something down right away, I just pull the spen out and go.
Of course I also like the water resistance.
I came from the Note 5 also. I've owned all the Notes, except the first one. What drew me to the Note 7 was the IP-68 dust & water resistance, the new s-pen and the 256GB SD offer. BTW Verizon sold me the new Gear VR for $49.99 with proof of purchase of Note 7.

My Note 2 is a solid phone. Still using it on WiFi. I did however burn the 6 crown towers from Clash Royale in to the screen though haha

Finger print sensor position bad press

Is anyone else sick of the bad press this phone is getting for fingerprint sensor ? Many site saying the phone has a major flaw and buyers beware. Granted it's not the best but I personally do not use the sensor and with 3 other options to unlock the phone i think it's a moutain out of mole hill issue.
Maybe this is a big issue to security minded people?
You said yourself it's not an issue because you don't use it. The fingerprint sensor is in an absolutely awful place. This is the first phone in the past several years I won't be able to use it, and will have to use another method. I setup face recognition, but I'm sure it's going to have issues in dark rooms, plus it can be fooled by a photo of yourself.

Yes heard it is no where near as fast to use iris or facial recognition. Samsung obviously things an earlier release is more important than sensor placement as we know this was a last minute hash job just hope it does not ditract to much from what promises to be the best phone of the year
I've been using the fingerprint sensor all day without an issue.
Agreed. While I would have preferred it to be in the center like the Pixel or V20, finding it with a case on your phone is extremely easy. I'm sure I won't even think about it in couple weeks.

The finger print scanner works great for my right hand. I can easily find it and use it.
MY left hand wants to go to the heartbeat sensor. It will take some getting use to, but its not unusable.
True it would of been better if it was in the middle center by itself but hahh it doesnt break the phone for me.
4 digit passcode as like, forever.
It's all marketing, any publicity is still publicity. Remember the makers of GTAV paid for negative press. On purpose! Don't be blind to how "it" works.
Again. 4 digit passcode. If that. I don't live in fear.
it always good to have finger print sensor on front. i always use the sensor for samsung pay. you may need to look backside and front side for authenticating a transaction.

I use it without fail. The position on the back is not a problem for me. I prefer it on the back.
While not ideal, the fingerprint placement isn't a huge issue for me. As once i got my case i can honestly find it easily and not worry so much of smudging the camera.
I use my phones on the desk, table, and so on and the back sensor is an extra step for me, doesn't matter where it is or how well it works. Neither is facial or iris a work around because you have to pick up the phone. I've read many comment that after a time you become accustomed to rear scanners, might even like it better. Didn't happen with me, I've gone through a couple and I like them less and less the more I used them. While there is no perfect placement for every situation there is a reason why Apple and Samsung are trying to get the scanner under the screen, it's the placement that has the most strengths and fewest weaknesses. I'm a Note man anyways and as reports seem to indicate that we have hope Samsung will get the scanner they failed to get under this screen under that one it's a no brainer for me. My current phone is only a few months old and I picked up an LG watch sport the other day to get my toy need in check for a while. Assuming the international Note 8 can be rooted it will be my next phone.
Ive been wondering.. since its already in a bad position would it be even harder for me to reach it since im left handed.. what do u think?

Oh you are right i thought it was on on left side of the cam (looking phone from rear view) thank u !

Do you miss not having the fingerprint scanner on the front?

Love my S8+.. however I think the biggest problem for me with the device is to get it unlocked without doing something very specific.
The iris scanner works fine.. but it has rules as far as how face the phone and distance yourself from it.
Are you guys also experiencing what I am as far as not being able to quickly unlock your phones from any casual position?
and to top it all, OK Google detection doesn't seem to work!
I agree I hate fingerprint scanners on the back. Tried to like them but never get used to having to pick up the phone when its laying flat on a table
Never use it anyways, just swipe to unlock. Not as paranoid as some are.
I really don't understand the bad press, I much prefer the new location!?
Before with my S7Edge if I wanted to one hand scan i had to hold the phone like a diving board, teetering out of my hand insecurely.
However with the new placement on the rear, i can middle finger scan one handded much more secrely with phone gripped between pinky, ring finger and thumb.
And finding the placement of the scanner is actually very easy to find if you use a case (any case for that matter...)
I sencerly hope people who are complaining with the new placement arent still scanning try to scan their thumbs because...that would be ludicrous!!, [emoji15anyways +1 for actiually liking the new location, a defenite improvement in my eyes of the S7 Edge.

No, i like it. Most of the time i use face unlock or smart location unlock though.
I find it hard to hit. The LG V20 I had before with the scanner in the middle was not bad.
I've gone to using the iris scanner instead. It is working much better then the fingerprint scanner. Especially when you turn on the option to bypass the lock screen swipe.
You can unlock your phone using: face recognition, iris scan, voice recognition and you can have it unlock automatically when at certain location (home/office) or connected to BT in your car for example. Paranoid types can save critical files inside secure folder and leave the phone unlocked. In other words so many options, to avoid fingerprint altogether, if you dislike it. Personally I don't care, may be actually easier to use it on the back, than front, especially when used one handed, but I have larger hands and bought smaller S8, it may be different for people with smaller hands on S8+
I do miss the fingerprint scanner on the front. When at work it is much more discrete and less obvious to unlock and tap to read a message/email/txt etc when my phone is laying on a desk in front of me.
Iris Scanner: Great indoors and if holding phone in hand. Worthless outdoors and if phone is laying on table/desk.
Fingerprint Scanner: Awkward all around. Placement, shape, proximity to camera etc. This is my only real gripe. It isn't that the S8 fingerprint reader is terrible, it is that the iPhone one was *very* good and placed ideally.
Face Unlock: Faster and easier than the iris scanner , but same drawbacks and less secure.
PIN: Ye' Ole Faithful. Still works just fine
As a v20 user I find the back placement superior to front placement phones. Its more natural and you can get a better grip on the phone when doing it instead of risking dropping the phone.
Putting the camera so close to the sensor was a pretty poor decision I don't know how that made it into the final product.

Wanted to be OK with it, but it's a PITA to be honest... And the recent update seems to have broken face unlock (probably works 1 time in 10). Iris scanning not that easy. I often have the phone on the desk to one side, and unlocking now means picking up the phone. Will have to investigate bluetooth pairing stuff, etc. Looking forward to sub-glass fingerprint reader (hopefully on Note 8)
Coming from a Nexus 6P I was used to it being on the back. On the nexus the placement was a bit better which made the access easier, but I like it nonetheless. I don't have my phone on the table a lot so no issues with picking it up like some other people do.
Yes. I wear glasses with a -15+ prescription, so the iris scanner is a complete non-starter for me. It won't even recognize my eyes through my glasses, and without my glasses I can't see the phone clearly enough to position my eyes for the scanner. The facial recognition is both not especially reliable and not all that secure, really. So, I'm stuck still using the fingerprint.
And having it on the back is a pain in the backside -- or on the backside, as the case may be. Even using smart unlock and trusted location, it's still a pain to have to reach across the phone and case when I'm trying to unlock the phone. The fingerprint sensor also seems to be considerably more finicky as to finger position than the S7's for some reason -- which is a bigger issue when I'm having to reach to unlock it from such an odd angle.
I honestly don't mind the position of the fingerprint scanner on the S8 - it's part of the reason I got the regular size instead of the plus. What I *do* mind is that it's a vertical rectangle - like, Samsung, nobody has fingers that can hit that when holding the phone like a normal person. If it was an oval shape I wouldn't mind half as much.
I've had to get a little used to its location over the past few days, but I find that my index finger tends to rest very close to it when I'm holding the phone, very easy to get to. I was used to using a finger on the back from the LG G4's power/volume controls on the back. I do find that it sometimes takes a little time, if you misjudge the distance and don't cover the entire sensor.
I've got a case on my S8 and it makes it easy to find the sensor. The fingerprint sensor was one of the (minor) things that made me get the S8 over the + because I figured the larger phone the sensor would be harder to reach. When I pick up the phone now I have my thumb near the power button and my index finger right over the fingerprint sensor. After I tap the sensor I just curl my finger so it supporting the phone from right under the sensor/camera. I probably have about a 75% first tap unlock rate.
I've never used a phone with a good front fingerprint sensor though, (only the note 4 with it's unreliable swipe sensor,) so I don't have much to compare to.

OnePlus 3T front fingerprint sensor is like the Note 5's but 1000 times better. No stupid clicking/moving button. It works instantly with the screen off or on. It works no matter what angle you use to touch it. It can be remapped to do many different things. It works first time everytime for unlocking the phone and unlocking apps.
When I first picked up the s8 I didn't think FP scanner was a good location. After 5 minutes using I feel like it's perfect. Mine also unlocks with the slightest finger touch and instantly. My note 5 was awkward at best unless laying on a desk. I do understand what you're saying about it laying on it's back. But I never hit the camera and it's snappy. I give it a 10

Honestly I think it was just for symmetry. To me there isn't any other logical reasoning (unless it's tied to the other electronics located there like the cam and heart rate sensor)

Can i have some feedback from the S8 owners?

I'm planning to buy S8 next week, so i wanted to hear some opinions, impressions, experiences from the people who already own this phone.
I tryied the phone at the store, it looks nice, it feels nice and it works great, but i would still like to hear what it's like on the daily basis, how's the battery life, does it lag after some time....etc
And one more thing. I've noticed some red tint at the top border, was it just me, or other people noticed the same thing?
Thanks.
I would honestly describe this phone as being the closest phone to perfect that i have ever owned! The only flaw is the finger print scanner! Battery life is very good! Display is excellent, Ergonomically its probably one of the best phones on the market! Likewise the camera is great! There is nothing bad about the device! If someone was to suggest they prefer another handset over the s8 however then iam sure it would purely be personal preference as oppose to choosing it because its better then the S8! Even the software on the S8 is massively improved over previous versions!! But....... just my opinion!!

Location mostly! Haven't even really bothered using it as a result! Tried it out initially and seemed accurate etc but the location just makes using it awkward and its just not as convenient for unlocking the device quickly as it was when we had it on the front! All samsung had to do was place it under the camera as oppose to right beside it and it would be alot better! The haptic feedback home button is pretty cool and actually kinda reminds me of using the finger print sensor on the s7 as you can essentially just press where the home button would of been and it unlocks the device! The downside being of course that anyone can do so as its not an actual security feature!!
I got my S8 approximately 3 weeks ago. I've just come from the iPhone 7 I find the S8 Amazing and it is very sleek. The software is pretty good and very customisable, the battery life is brilliant. The only problem is Samsung have this annoying thing called Bixby which is a siri want to be. It is not possible to deactivate or disable it. The only way to work around this you have to freeze it. Had some random bugs with the Bluetooth. Otherwise amazing phone.
I've had mine around 3 weeks. I have the Samsung clear case so I have no problem with the fingerprint sensor. I'll be putting a DecalGirl skin on so when I'm using the Rhino Bumper I'll still have a tactile nudge. Came from an International S6 (actually the same one you seem to have). Bit better battery life, no lag, amazing screen. I was surprised at how comfortable it is to hold and I'm happy to have an SD card again. I was hesitant to give up my S6 after it got Nougat as it was like a new phone. Can't imagine going back now.
One of the best devices this year... It's a Star on XDA!
It's an amazing phone. Best one I've ever had. I've had it since 4/18. Finger print location doesn't bother me at all. You'll love it!
Perfect. I did configured the fingerprint sensor but I dont use it much. I prefer the iris scanner, its fast. The rest you read it already. Screen, features, hardware, design, battery, you wont regret it

I have the international variant so experience may vary. I love it. Not the biggest fan of the fingerprint scanner position but after a couple days, it became natural. It's very smooth. Smoother than the S7 I'd have to say.
Battery life is amazing. Can easily get over a day of life, even 2 days sometimes. I haven't experienced any lag over time.
The red tint you noticed was probably burn in. That's the only problem I understand with the phone since it's an OLED display. I keep mine in immersive mode and use gestures for the navbar instead (I prefer it actually).
There was an issue with some displays at launch having a red tint which was resolved through software update.
Here my review. It has some profanity so if u don't like hearing cursing don't watch. But it's pretty popular on YouTube at 29k views
You will get used to fingerscanner location and it will not bother. Also useless bixby button can be remapped without root, so no prob here too.
Great phone!
Fps works fine and is ok to reach on my s8 but not for me on the + model.
Face recognition and iris scanner works fine.
The new Samsung Experience Ui is slick and fast.
I'm in the uk so have the exynos version.
The display just pops.
For me the dimensions of the s8 hit my sweet spot and it's really comfortable to hold.
The s8+ version for me was just too big and to me felt top heavy.
It's as slippery as any other glass form factor phone.
I'm using....
Samsung Screen Protector- the film type.
Black Dragon dbrand back skin.
RhinoShield Bumper.

Great video man :good:
Only issue with my S8: Display light shines through right under the earpiece. Someone else noticed that?
Apart from that the phone is close to perfect for me.
Do not forget THE SCREEN SCRATCHES VERY EASY.
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I get a consistent 5 hours of screen on time every day. And as the other guy noted this screen does scratch easily. I had a buddy that scratched his pretty bad and had no idea how he did it. Haven't scratched mine yet after a couple weeks with no screen protector though. I came from a 6S+ and a note 5 before that and I'm pretty happy with this phone after flashing my unlocked Verizon version to an unbranded Canadian firmware.
uk neverlocked has problems "emergency call only"
I recommend to you that you buy the french version
http://www.expansys.fr/samsung-galaxy-s8-64gb-midnight-black-origin-eu-301130/
I had a s7 edge which is dead last week when trying to put it in water :'(. So I bought s8. So thats what I find:
1/ I really didn't like the unlock features.. the fingerprint sensor is in the back so it is just useless (ps you can save 4 fingers but I dont know how my 4 fingers can access to the fingerprint). The iris scanner cannot be used if the phone is a little bit far (in the car for exemple when you are driving I used to unlock my s7 directly with finger). To be able to unlock your s8 when its far you must use face recognition it is quick but it is useless at night because it uses camera. (Ps1: you cannot see your lockscreen before/without unlocking. Ps2: you cannot use iris and facerecognition at the same time so you must choose night compatible or far compatible).
2/ the screen ration is just so bad.. videos/apps/games are not adapted with display ratio so the phone will show two black bars at the top and at the buttom of the screen + the nav bar is, in the most cases, present in the screen and dont disappear automatically so there is no sense of "infinity screen" and I cant feel it.
3/ the battery takes more time with my s7 edge then my new s8.
So I really felt that s7 edge was better (for me) but samsung should not tell people that phones are water resistant because its not always true. (Sorry for bad english).

Thinking about buying One Plus 6T, concerned about finger print sensor

Thinking about buying a One Plus 6T. Fine with no audio jack, teardrop, and I'm concerned about the inscreen finger print sensor. Since first generation technology heard it was slow, not as reliable as rear ones.
Wondering about people's one Plus 6T experience. Has software upgrades helped? Any technique for using it?
Mine was a little wonky at first, but worked good for the most part. Now several updates down the road I have no problems at all with it except every once in awhile if out in very bright sun light. But that's few and far between.
From my experience and experiences I have read the sensor is faster than a traditional rear one. Only issues I ever have is when my fingers are wet or dirty.
Finger print sensor and face unlock works just brilliant. dont hesitate to buy
I'll be the odd man out. I hate it. Probably 4 out of 10 times I hold my finger on it and nothing. Just glows at me, rather infuriating honestly.
10 out of 8 picks up. most probably you couldn't setup properly. you must setup same finger at least twice ?then will pick up super fast

works 10 out of 10 times for me with clean fingers in any light situation. I think how much part of your finger gets registered also matters. I try to cover the whole part above the first line of the finger.
Works fast enuff not to bother u.
Never will be fast like a traditional one which works instantaneously.
How fast it is :
Imagine the time taken for a double tap on screen.
Giving allowances for differences in speed of double tap amongst us,
It will not be quicker than a double tap.
It will not be longer than a triple tap.
How often it doesn't work :
Works everytime.
Special occasions it won't work :
After a bath.
It will annoy u. Make u do twice/thrice.
It's not wet fingers. Wet fingers work as fine as dry.
May be the salt depostion form soap or the soaked effect of fingers.
Comaprision to OP7:
Slightly slower than op7.
Op6t is at the border level - anything even slightly slower than 6t will bother u. Op7 has some margins.
But op7 has no mirror black.
Soon 6T will not be available.
Buy it soon.

Which rom do you use? And how did you register your fingers? (Light levels, brightness levels)
at first i had some issues with it, even after registering the same finger 3 times it didnt worked all the times and always took a while, but than i installed the mclaren edition animation and worked much better
So here's my two cents. The Finger Print Scanning is slow. I have a Nexus 6P and that's faster. But from personal observation I can say that the Fingerprint is a Hit or Miss. It depends upon a number of factors. My own case: on Stock OOS Open Beta with a FP animation mod installed (DeadlyGhost's. It's amazing. Do give it a shot. Can be found in the themes section) , I'm getting amazing speeds. I'm using a Modded version of the Ripple Animation (forgot the real name) and the color set to purple I only have to touch to unlock. This is with an Unofficial Third party case installed. While on a Custom ROM with the same setup (minus the animation) it takes a solid 2 seconds. So it depends upon your setup, I guess. Also as someone commented earlier the McLaren animation helps. If you're stock and U rooted there is a guide. Just search around XDA. If you're Rooted, try the aforementioned Animation Mod. Though it will only work on OxygenOS.
I switched from LG to this phone. I got sick of lgs late updates. I'm glad that I did. There is a lot of development here for this phone. Plus with the ROM, mods, etc this phone is the best daily driver that I have ever owned.
One trick I used was to only setup my two thumbs and one index finger.
OP6T only allows for 5 fingerprints to be setup. I use two slots for each thumb. OOS uses images to recognize your prints. By using two slots you add more images to the same finger which makes it even faster. Setting up the same finger twice can be difficult as it will take time because your print will be recognized, but this gives you the chance to capture your print at every angle possible.
Never found the sensor to be particularly slow.. it's faster than a iPhone 6s Plus.
When I bought this device I was a little worried like you, but trust me, the sensor is not a problem, is not perfect but neither horrible, it just works fine.

Are u suggesting animation mods help to bring about a faster finger print ??
My take : I don't think so animation has any effect. Theoretically it does not, since animation is only outside the fingerprint area.

9.0.5 ( not 9.0.15) OOS. Omega kernel.
Brightness level was average I guess. I dont think it matters since the sensor area is by default fully lit in high brightness mode and adjacent area are jet black while registering the finger print.
I tried dark room registering but in my case it didn't add any difference or I felt it was slower for one of my thumb . So I deleted it and re registered in my room with a tube light lit.
Did it two three times until the slower thumb became equal to other thumb.
I guess it was something in my thumb rather than lighting that made it slower.
One idea u can try is,
While registering wipe everytime before u place the finger ... I haven't done that. But dust on screen or print on screen guard is likely to interfer in registering.
And if still slow, no need to worry that others phone are good . Some people have good deep fingerprints.
I've never had an issue with mine. I did the trick (found on xda) to install the McClaren background and it to me appears to be faster than the stock background.
Another thing I've seen is if you wake up your phone and are looking at it, while pressing the fingerprint sensor area, it may appear to stutter when unlocking if you have face detection enabled also. I've tried it several times with a piece of post it note over the camera to verify that to me, appeared to be what was causing it to "stutter". If I am looking at the phone, I don't go near the fingerprint sensor. If I'm not looking at the phone, then the fingerprint sensor works lightning fast.

I concur. Sensor seems to work very well and very quickly as long as my thumb is clean and dry. If it isn't...I guess that is what the PIN is for.
No way a UD sensor beats or even comes close to a tradiotnal one for now. Traditional back fingerprint sensor in oppo f5 youth I have tested, in my frnds phone.
It instantaneous.
At first it sucked but improved over time.
