WiFi signal seems poor - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My WiFi seems poor compared to my note 3 and my wife's GS4. I'm in the same room as the router (about 3 metres) and I'm getting 3 bars at best. I need to be right next to the router to get a full signal.
I need to test some more today but my 3g/4g was dropping a lot yesterday too. Driving 80 miles in areas I previously had a good signal.
I wonder if my device is faulty or the radio is bad compared to my note 3, anyone have similar?

Having the same issue..

In CyanogenMod no problem, but only for 2..4 GHz. On the 5 GHz signal is weaker.

WiFi dissapointing

Went into college today for the first time with my new HD. Two of the folks in my class have iPhones.
Anyway, from the start of the day, the colleges wifi was coming and going on my phone, the signal strength was barely registering and I could not browse at all. I went into WiFi advanced settings and set power to full, this made little difference.
Both my friends with iPhones were able to browse happily.
I'm now home and deciding to check out performance here. I've just gone back into WiFi - Advanced, made sure power was at "Best Performance". My battery is at about 70%. All I'm getting is 3 bars of signal strength, varying from about 50-60% signal.
Here's the problem, I'm only sitting literally 6 feet from the router. I'd call that f'n lousy.
My laptop shows a connection signal strength of 100% / Full Bars / 100%.
So WiFi signal strength is lousy at College and lousy here at home. Is there anything i can do ?
I experience exactly the same reception quality with my HD. But for what its worth, this is exactly the same performance I got with my Touch Pro and my TyTn II before that.
.....mmmm yes I had a tytn and it was bad compared to my great xda2i...
I wonder if it is something a radio update could solve? i'm getting my HD thursday!!
If you plug in your headphone, does the signal strength improve?

No, and I even tried connecting to external power. made no difference. I also notice that if I tilt the HD a bit this way and that the signal drops even further. I have had it here at 15-20% while sitting 6 feet from the Router.
This to me is a deal breaker, I dont think I can live with this. Its bloody awful, and I hate the way it kept dropping the wifi connection in college.
Hmm not sure of the problem, my Wifi signal strength is pretty much equal to my PCs, im 20 feet away and get 80%.
I've never been able to get reliable wifi on my Tytn. Sad to hear the problem persists in a handset I was considering moving up to.
I'm satisfied with the signal strength. Yes, it is weaker than on my netbook or my notebook, but I use the "Best Battery" mode and I get around 80% signal strength 15 feet away from my router.
Ugh say it ain't so.
I use the WiFi to listen to internet radio around the house.
I've not experienced any problems even when upstairs at the furthest distance from my cheap-n'-cheerful Netgear router. At this range, the signal will have to pass through several brick walls.
Having discovered the signal strength readout in the settings, I notice that it does not read very high, but this doesn't seem to adversely affect the performance.
As far as I am concerned, the WiFi is "fit for purpose" and doesn't seem to differ much from my laptop.
Maybe your wifi is defective... Mine works fine with walls between me and the router, my TyTN II also has no problems, my old TyTN used to drop the connection as soon as it connected, was useless for wifi.
Hmm
I'm sorry to say that my wifi on the HD works fantastic. It even picks up wifi networks my netbook deosn't. I use it all day long at home then connect when at work.
I don't care what the signal strength is in various rooms I just get on with it. Having said that its 3 or 4 bars in all the rooms so all good here.
What sort of Routers are you having problems with?

I'd like to hear from ppl who have tested the device within a weak WiFi zone such as my room in college.
My experience was that it drops the network. Literally would drop it as soon as it had connected. I was nearly crying. In the same place, my laptop and my mates iPhones work grand. So maybe some of you could test it in weak zones.
To those of you defending it and saying its fit for purpose, please dont forget how much we paid for this thing. I would have expected decent WiFi. It clearly isnt! Another thing that dissapoints.
Regarding what kind or routers I'm usin, DLINK, Netgear and I aint got a clue what they run in college. But thats not the point, the point is that in my place of work, the only device that does not work at all is my VERY EXPENSIVE Touch HD. Everything else (laptops, iphones, other phones) works. That makes me kinda sick
I've had very good signal at home and at work where its a big building. I think something might be wrong with yours try to have it exchanged.
I don't have the device, but on my Artemis I can select how good the wifi works, either auto, battery optimized or full power. Whenever I select full power it gets a better signal. Maybe you have such an option on your device too?
I have connected to about 4 different WIFI routers without problems.
The furthest was about 50 meters away with solid walls... Perhaps there is a fault with your HD? Consider returning for a replacement and see if it's any better.
objective opinion
theoretically, Touch HD's (and most of the HTC's phones) should have weaker wifi performance than iphone. Performance = throughput and/or ability to lock onto signals and/or range.
reason: touch hd uses TI (Texas Instrument)'s wifi chip, lab testings shows about 12 mbps
iphone uses Marvel wifi chip, lab testing shows 18 mbps.
TI chip is much cheaper in price than marvels, that's the reason why HTC chose them.
that being said, i have seen weak wifi signals in my house, where it would see the AP, but can't associate (at certain spots). but for me, once it associates , it will lock on pretty well. wifi through put is definitely weaker than iphone, despite the CPU advantage -> 528 MHz, vs. iphone's downclocked 400 Mhz (from 667MHz)
also, your school would uses enterprise AP, so it's either cisco or aruba. but it should not make a difference. the immediate remedy for your HOME, is to go into the router's console and change the channel away from the default 1, 6 or 11. those three channels have the most interference, because most ppl don't bother change them, so your neighbor would be on those channel too.
Mine seems to work 'ok'...
I live in a 100+ year old house, so the walls are pretty thick!
If I'm in the bedroom furthest from my router, my laptop gets a weak signal - and my HD does too (just about enough to watch YouTube with only a very occasional break)
So it certainly seems no worse - and considering that HD have squeezed a laptop into the size of a flattened fag packet, I'm happy enough with that

I don't exactly have that situation but:
- I use a US Robotics access point
- When sitting 6ft away from it, I get near ~100% signal strength, as you would expect
- Through some walls I get only a very slight decrease in signal strength
- My phone often picks up access points that my laptop (macbook pro, has quite reliable wireless) in other homes which are separated by thick concrete walls and easily 30 to 60 feet away
- At the office I can use my wireless outside, if I'm at least close to the building
- So basically it works as efficient as the wireless on any decent notebook I've used, which usually have stronger and better powered receivers than phones

True, you must expect nothing less than good performance, and as stated by many people, you can also expect the HD to offer that performance, it is simply there (well on the average HD). Something must not be working right, either the radio version, glitchy software, or in the worst case, the hardware is faulty, it happens on the best devices. If your wireless receiver has a hardware fault causing it to conflict you will see these drops as the device randomly disables en reenables all the time.
I'd suggest making use of your warranty while you still can.

wifi - very poor - one Bar only 5 meters away from router

not feeling wifi on this phone at all compared to my old hd2, not getting any bars at all showing and connection is poor, anyone else seeing this?

So far no. Full bar for me. Weird..
This is why I hate when new devices get released.
Using the phone outside my 2 story townhouse(router upstairs) with 3bars. Vibrant and hd2 was either 0-1 bars.
Yes, I'm finding it really weak as well, in fact it just dropped back to 3G as I typed this.
I noticed it shows as weak, yea....
Mine seems to have a weaker signal strength on my top floor compared with my desire. Also when running speed tests it struggles to hit 3Mbps downstream on a 38Mbps BT infinity line.

Stronger signal for me .
jje
definitely a weaker signal for me compared to my desire.
i'm getting 2 bars out of 4 despite being in the very next room to my router. it's 4 bars on my desire.
:-(
Might I suggest that the difference may be in the amount of interference your Wifi is experiencing? Try switching to a different "channel" on the router or even from 2.4 to 5GHz band (not sure if the phone supports this but worth a shot). I used to have a problem with this when i first got my SGS1 and when i swapped my wifi router to a new channel the problem disappeared.
Good luck
huh, to me the signal is the same if not better than the hd2.
the same here european version! 5 meters away it shows 1 bar only.
I'm currently 20m away from my router and behind a couple of walls and I get 2/4 bars on the Wifi and on the Speedtest app I get
Ping: 25ms
Download: 5946kbps
Upload: 3882kbps
In my opinion that qualifies as decent signal strength and quite a bit better than what I got with my N1.
edit:
And just to clarify, if I'm in the same room as the router I get full bars on Wifi.
I'm having no problems with WiFi. I get full signal in my living room (the same room as the router), and in my kitchen (which is about 10m away and has 2 stud partition walls and one masonry wall between it and my living room) I get 2 bars. So its as good as I'd expect, however I haven't tried checking my connection just outside my flat, but I live in an old school house with 2ft external walls, so I'm guessing I wont get much of a signal.
My laptops' WiFi behaves the very same. If your WiFi is worse than your previous phone....something wrong!
Wifi is fine on mine. I'm 2 floors away from the router and can get a two bar signal no problem.
Low also although it seems to perform ok.

for me
2.4ghz band is stronger than my sgs 1
and 5ghz band is weaker than my sgs 2
I noticed on my s1, froyo showed more strength bars than when I installed gingerbread. Maybe it is just a display problem caused by gingerbread?
Wifi signal is more stable than in sgs1 or my HTC desire.
10m from router, 3 walls

I get slightly higher signal strength with the SGS2 than I do with my Nexus One (dBm as viewed in Wifi Analyzer).
However, I do have definite throughput issues -- can't get over 2mbps downstream on my SGS2 vs 6-8mbps downstream on my Nexus One at home. However, on my work network it's a different matter - the SGS2 is slightly faster than the N1. To me this suggests that either there is a compatibility issue between the SGS2 and certain APs, or the SGS2 is more prone to interference than the N1...
Hi, you could try wifi analyzer app, it will show you the strongest signal on channels.

Nexus 4 Signal Strength Fluxuations

Does anyone have a problem with their Nexus 4 signal strength?
I have Bell Canada, which is supposedly has the best coverage in Canada, I live in the suburbs of a relatively large city and I often see no bars at all. I'm sitting on my couch right now and the signal strength is ranging from -97 dBm to -110 dBm.
Do 2.4 Ghz band devices interfere at all? I have bunch of portable phones and 2 routers, so maybe this is related?
Nexus 4 on T-Mobile
I am in Portland OR in an area of good signal according to T-MO but my nexus rarely shows any signal bars inside my house. This is my 3rd N-4. T-Mo says they have great signal in my area.... so what gives with this signal thing?
My reception has been wonky ever since the 4.2.2 and baseband update.

I get 1-2 bars in my house usually between 95-105 db, outside I get low 80's and full or near full at all times. Even though my bars inside top out at 2 I have still managed to pull up to 13 Mbps but thats on a sunny day. Didn't see any results above 9 Mbps today. I live on the outskirts of a not so major city so I can't really complain. One minute I'm pulling 10 Mbps and the other I'm only getting like 200 Kbps though, but it's all good enough for what I need it for and I can't complain since its only $30/month. I just transferred from Virgin Mobile after their "upgrade" resulted in me and many other of their customers losing data for the last 3 weeks and to this date its still not fixed! Their "3G" speeds were atrocious, I've pulled higher speeds off of T-Mobiles 2G network.
I hear a lot of us who are on 4.2.2 and baseband .48 have had issues so I'm thinking its either a major software issue with the radio firmware that hasn't been addressed yet in any revision or it could be a major hardware issue as well as I flashed .27, .33, and .48 and noticed no differences. I had to set my phone to WCDMA Only to get it to maintain a good connection, otherwise HSPA/HSPA+ would just cut out after 2 minutes of use and revert to 2G or have no data at all for 5-10 minutes. After switching to WCDMA Only this problem went away completely and I haven't lost a signal since. For whatever reason it picks up more adjacent towers as well on this setting.
I have that kind of problem also though I notice it only when the signal is weak.
It goes from -99dbm to -111dbm with no reason. My other phone (Defy) keeps a good -97 at the same spot without any fluctuation.
I will try to switch to wcdma only.

[Q] i9505 slow WiFi away from the router

Hello!
I got my new i9505 two weeks ago, and I'm having issues with Wifi connection.
I have both Galaxy S III and S4. Next to the router (100/10 Mbps HFC connection), my Galaxy SIII reaches 27/10 Mbps, and my Galaxy S4 reaches 30/10 Mbps. That speeds fluctuate (15-40 Mb) but I can say that's a good connection in the phones.
But when I go away a few meters from the router (5-10 meters), the S4 speed drops to 3-0.01 Mb. Yes, 0.01 Mb, when Galaxy SIII drops only 0-5 Mbps less. Curiously, upload speed is usually kept on both phones.
Here are some results from Speedtest.net, left Galaxy SIII right Galaxy S4:
(Sorry, I can't post outside links)
In Galaxy SIII I made one test, results (27.85/10.69/16ms) next to the router. I made the test two times in Galaxy S4, reaching (30.41/8.52/25ms) at its highest point. When I walk away from the router (10m) the speeds on Galaxy S4 drops to 3 Mbps.
I tried all. Stock ROM Kitkat and Lollipop, official PHE ROMs, JFLTE-GPE, Cyanogenmod, different modems (current i9505XXUHOB8)... Is this a hardware failure? What's happening?
If you need more information, please feel free to ask!
Indeed, I'm spanish. I probably made spelling mistakes, I'm not an English expert, please do not judge me harshly!
Thanks in advance!
I think it's your router is no good rather than your phone.
Yours must be a max of G mode router or less I think, all my routers are N mode and my SG4 connects at a maximum of 72Mbs, then starts to fall off the farther away I go, it is normal for speed to decrease as you move away.
Your other issue might be the channel that the router is using, also you might have lots of other routers near you too.
Go get WiFi analyser from the play store and find out more info.
Tell us what router you have?

I have a Thomson TGW870 Coaxial router, which is configured in Channel 13, but Wifi Analyzer is fluctuating. I don't have channel 14. Wifi analyzer tells me there is no good channels except channel 14. Sometimes it says channel 12, 13 or 8 are "good" (2-5 stars), so I think it's better stay in Auto.
BTW, I tested all in another connection (ADSL 10/1 Mbps). Galaxy SIII reaches cable speed even staying in the room below (two floor house), when Galaxy S4 reaches incredibly slow speed: (0.01/1 Mbps). Upload speed is unaffected.
I've noticed that Galaxy S4 does not show as many networks as Galaxy SIII, but but networks that detects the S4 have the same attenuation than SIII. They are far connections, but SIII is showing them while S4 not.
Thanks for reply!
Up!
I'm having trouble too with reboots. When I play "Megapolis", the game freezes randomly, and sometimes the phone reboots. I think this may be caused by overheating, but I underclocked to 1.5 Ghz and undervolt -50mV (Stability Test passed). I don't know what's happening with my phone.
Also, my wifi drops sometimes, generally when I'm a bit far from the router.
Is my phone (motherboard or something) damaged?
Hi again with the info you have provided I can't really suggest anything more.
Tell me, how many other routers/other WiFi signals are near you, compare your SIII and SIV.
If you have lots of others near you there must be interface, this is why some people have to use 5Ghz WiFi instead of 2.4 Ghz.
I must note, I haven't seen the specs for the thomson router yet.

The other router I have tested is a Sercomm AD1018 (Vodafone), ADSL connection 10/1 Mbps.
I should try 5 Ghz WiFi, but in my other house (Sercomm), but in my neighborhood there is no more connections, so it isn't an interference issue.
Ah OK mate then if there's no other WiFi signals around then not sure what else.
I will tell you a quick story,
I have a Telstra big pond Adsl2 WiFi router it is a technicolor tg587 I'm pretty sure it is an N300, if I connect upto it and move away about 8 metres away it will drop to B mode and 5Mbs. I also have a WiFi extender it is a dlink dap1320 N300 I can be almost anywhere in the house say upto 20 meters away and still have good connection, it will fluctuate between say 24Mbs and 65Mbs I rarely see lower than that.

Wifi on Oneplus 2 works extremely slow while it works flawlessly in S3

Hi,
I just got my Oneplus 2 yesterday. But I noticed a strange issue.
I live in a hostel where login based public wifi is provided. I have a samsung S3 which connects to the wifi even at peak hours of traffic and gives full speed at all times. But when I connect to the same wifi through my oneplus2, it barely gives any speed, even googling is not possible.
Both the devices are able to connect to the wifi with atleast 3 out of 5 bars. I don't understand why when S3 gives proper speed, at the same time oneplus2's wifi fail to perform which is relatively new. Oneplus2's wifi should atleast perform similar to S3, if not better.
BTW I am using Cyanogenmod 10.2 in S3. I've not rooted or done any configuration changes on Oneplus2 yet.
Please suggest if there is anything that I can do to improve the wifi performance on Oneplus2.
Thanks in advance!!
I'm having a somewhat similar issue. I just got my oneplus 2 today and I connected it up to a friend's beamforming router running on 5ghz ac. While an LG g3, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy s4, Motorola nexus 6 all had a connectivity speed of 400-550Mbps, the oneplus 2 on the same network could only achieve a connectivity speed of 96Mbps. I'm not quite sure what is limiting it's connection. Has anyone experienced something similar?
Just got mine today and same issue. If I check as soon as it connects before IP assignment, it registers 433Mbps but as soon as IP assignment happens and traffic starts up on wifi it drops to 96Mbps. Even worse, it only achieves 10Mbps throughput while my OPO gets easily over 100Mbps throughput. Any ideas? Still stock.
I've seen the same thing here, 10mbps on speedtest with 5 GHZ wifi. Interesting thing is if I switch to 2.4GHz I can eek out 80ish, my OPO on CM 12.1 can easily max out my 150mbit connection, considering compiling CM for the OP2 and testing throughput with that to see if it's an oxygen bug (I think it is).
Same problem here. Connected to the same wifi network with my OPO, OP2, and S6 edge. Connection speed to router was 135 mbps, 86 mbps, and 400 mbps respectively. Speed test results for download were 115 mbps ,32 mbps, 172 mbps respectively. OP2 speeds are just lousy and there are no settings I can see to remove wifi optimization that usually causes issues. Tested using the same app, to the same server, all in the same room and distance from the router. I hope this isn't a result of skimping on the hardware and is software related.
I was having a similar problem on my wifi while downloading apps on my new OP2. Changed the wifi setting from DHCP to Static on my phone and im getting full speeds now. Give it a try
i dont having much knowladge of wifi connection but reception of wifi is poor on one plus two . same wifi connection is also connected with
galaxy s4 , yu yureka ,and even samsung galaxy ace dous 1st gen device have better reception than this.. if i cover place near 3.5mm jack wifi bars drops
i dont know what is going on... phone is heating even if i play clash of clan. battery capacity is enough but i dont know why battery backup is so poor.
i was happy when i ordered this phone and wait for invite for 2months now my all hapines turns into sadness after observing these types of things...
now i m thinking that i return back this phone to amazon and clam my full payment.
IĀ“ve experienced something similair, just the other way around: as soon as the OPT gets connected to my WiFi, all other devicesĀ“ connection slows down.
My one plus one is fine on 5ghz band and same with nvidia shield tab and nexus 7 but op2 sucks ass at 3mbps but as soon as I switch to 2.4ghz I can get 20mbps with lower latency

I've seen slower Wifi performance and more connectivity problems with the latest OOs version. I never saw this with previous versions of the Oxygen OS.
I can live with it for now, but I'm hoping it gets fixed in the next update.
I had the same Issue.
Clean flashing the Rom, and then flashing the kernel again made it better for me, but still not good.
In the end, giving my phone priority in the Router/modem fixed the Issue completely for me.
If u have access to your Routers interface you should try that
