RAM - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Marshmallow / n6p use about 500mb more RAM than my Lollipop / m7 while running same apps.
On bootup with Lux, 500 firepaper and a few other background apps I am using 1.7 gb's of RAM. My m7 was using 1.2 gb's with same configuration.

More RAM is used as video RAM for the QHD display in the N6P.

Thanks. That makes sense. I was getting notifications on low memory during my day to day user.
It wasn't that long ago that I was running Windows with 2gb of RAM 2.7gb if I used the 3gb switch. Now I need a min of 3 for my pocket computer.

N6p uses 64 bit cpu which will use more ram than the 32 bit cpu on the m7.

[Q] High RAM usage?

Anyone know what is stored in the RAM? Ive checked in my apps and the running and cached apps only amount to around 250mb.. My total ram usage is around 700/800. What else is the ram used up by?
Use this app and find out.

Besides apps you are running remember the OS itself aka "Android" uses system ram. That's why when you see phones running "sense" on top of the OS your memory is much lower. AOSP is much slimmer and uses very little resources.

Who can get more ram on Nexus 7? Tegra 3 Nexus!

Right now the max ram I have free is about ~400, I'm wondering if I can get up to ~600!!?
My ROM is smooth ROM and faux kernel... Any suggestions?

more ram
i get 522 - 550 by using dx toolbox.
what is the advantage of having 600mb free ram??
I have a nexus 4, which if you know has 2 gbs of ram. Never runs out although my nexus 7's ram drops quickly. More ram means snappier system... Just wanted suggestions on this

Android manages memory differently than a computer. An oft repeated mantra that holds true in this case is ”free ram is wasted ram.” Killing processes simply for the sake of increasing free ram is counterintuitive and only serves to reduce system efficiency.

Back in there day, there used to be a company that you could send your device to, they would desolder your memory and throw in a bigger/faster chip.
Dont know if they still do or the name.

Honestly 2 GB should be mandatory. Its what a couple extra dollars to the consumers...

This is correct. You are wasting your time worrying about whether you have 400 or 600 MB free. If you are completely running out and experiencing huge lags, then it's time to worry.

Mem leak in 4.3 ?

Is memory leak problem solved in android 4.3?

Which memory leak?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
is there an issue? no problem here. are you sure that its not just one of your apps? a badly written app could potentially "leak" memory.
Ram used to take 1gb of memory... N I used to reboot to clear it off

I have not experienced it on 4.2.2 or 4.3, though I run stock.

i have never had ram take 1gb. i usually have between 1250-1550 free. right now i have 1327mb free ram. seems like you might need to take some time to take control of your apps. if you have root, greenify(app) will help, autostarts works well too. if you dont control your apps, they start controlling you and your device. personally, id rather be the one thats in control
I now have 0.94 GB RAM free but what does it matter? You have 2 gigs of RAM and its still running buttery smooth.

The N4 never had a memory leak. Don't worry about how much free ram you have, free ram is wasted ram and using it uses no extra power

(q) ram usage

I upgraded from the galaxy nexus to the g2 and what I can't figure out is what is using all the ran on the g2 I have the same apps on the g2 as I did on my gnex but on the g2 uses almost a gig of ram where as the gnex only used half of that with all the same apps the only difference is the ROM and kernel could it be one of them using all the ram
i can see many more differences between these two devices lol. resolution being the most obvious one.
ill try explain with an example. u have a small house and feel comfortable there. then on top of that u build a 4x bigger house. and you would still live only in the small house. wouldnt it be better to use parts of the bigger house aswell ?
and not only the house grew but you as well.

That's what I sorta figured
Thanks
That's what I sorta figured just wasn't sure
Thanks
yeah, nothing to worry about. 1gb used ram is pretty standard now.

The LG has 2GB of RAM, if your device uses 1.9GB, then start worrying. If it uses only half or 1.5GB, it is a good thing.
U know,g2 has a much better gpu, processor and resolution etc and does and handles everything better(while sacrificing ram usage)

2.5GB of RAM?

My OPO never had this issue, I've never seen this... Check this screenshot. Says in apps and in applications we have 2.5GB of RAM not 3GB.

2.589 gigabytes to be exact

no, please don't have this issue too. :/
What's eating so much of it? I hit reboot and it closes 59MB of RAM. Something in background is eating RAM like candy. My N7 is only using 750MB in comparison... Can't wait for root and complete stock. Has to be Moto crud.

And this matters why?
Are your phones not performing as expected?

I assume it matters because it's not 3gb of ram?

Hope its a glitch or some ****..
Some amount of RAM is always set aside for the GPU. My OnePlus One (LiquidSmooth KK) lists 2.81gb RAM and my Galaxy S4 lists 1.78gb.
That does seem like a lot though. Maybe Moto X's reserve some RAM for the natural language and contextual computing processors. Is there anyone with the 2013 or 2014 Moto X that can see how much RAM they list?
Moto x 20114: 1.8 GB total.
2013 Moto X: 1.75GB total

I'm worried about this too. Battery seems to drain fast with little usage. Just checked my ram and was shocked about how much is being used. I literally have nothing open and this is what I have
