Grainy when shooting in 240fps slow-motion? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody else have an issue with a grainy picture when shooting 240fps? Is this normal? Maybe it's because the lighting isn't bright enough? I'll upload a sample later! Thanks.

Yea, if you check the reviews, they mention that slow motion video in low light makes it grainy.
They actually say, in order for slow motion to work well, you need very good lighting.

That makes perfect sense, shutter speed is probably so fast at that rate it's not able to get much light.

Its like that with every phone I've used iPhone to Android. You need good lighting. Outdoor works best.

I too observed grainy quality on my videos indoor and thought there was a problem with my nexus.
Some relief

Exposure compensation lag

Hi all,
Automatic correction of exposure is slow and in stages.
example if you record a video of the sky and ground, we see that AutoCorrect is slow.
Do you think this is software? or hardware?
Thank you
It's annoying and let's the camera down. I've also noticed pixels are block.
It'll be software based due to compression and refresh rates

I keep getting blurred pictures, it looks fine on the screen, then it focuses in, still looks good and just as it takes the photo it does something weird and the picture comes out blurry. I hate this! It looks really amazing and then just before it takes the picture it blurs it!
Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I experience the same problem sometimes, but it's with a cause.
This is probably because you don't hold the camera still enough when you shoot the picture. It is absolutely critical to keep it super steady, because the shutter speed isn't incredibly fast, hence more exposure, and thus more susceptible to motion blur.
Do you think it's the lens or the software?

Maybe both haha..
I found that lowering the ISO to 100 made the pictures look much better..
It still needs sorting though, the light to dark exposure sensor is plain dumb.

It's either the camera module itself, or the software, or both.

[Q] Camera Quality

Hey guys,
Got a M2 recently...my camera quality is always grainy for some reason...I've tried to change settings but it's still grainy. Using stock camera app and I've tried in many different lighting conditions and still same result. Any ideas?
Not only your M2 takes grainy pictures, mine too. I think it's a common thing for our phones.

not exactly. what i observed from my experience of using smart phones (moto milestone 2, dell streak, xperia x1), these phones take pretty amazing outdoor shots where there is sufficient light.
the reason ur getting grainy pictures is because the pictures ur taking is probably taken indoors or where lighting is limited.
try taking a shot where u have ample sunlight and be amazed

That is true. Just indoors is terrible quality. Outdoors it is.

u could improve the lighting indoors; ie use brighter lights, or adjust the angle of the capture to minimize the effects of shadows. buts thats the best u can do. at the end of the day, its a monster of a smart phone, not a digital cam. i suppose its picture quality is good enough. ive seen worse on a HTC Mozart with a supposedly better cam
I see. That is pretty true.
Does anyone know if this could be "repaired" with a software update, because the outside picture really look great and I might think, that the bad-light-pictures do just look so bad because of wrong calibration or so.
Not really a software issue, while they could try and improve the denoise filter the image gets passed through, all digital cameras suffer the same issue.
All CCD/CMOS sensors suffer from grainy pictures when there is insufficient light unless you have control over shutter/iso settings which can alleviate it somewhat. (eg, digital cameras).
I think for what it does, it does it very well and more than sufficient for a phone! As stated in previous posts, if your indoor shots are grainy, try adding some more light to the subject.
One thing I did note with the camera was that, if you have your 'scene' set to 'Steady Shot' it greatly increases noise and other issues when indoors.

Ok cool. That's handy to know.

S7's camera takes top spot!

The 12mp camera take top spot in DXO testing.
Everyone can now take a breather knowing they have the best camera on their phone on the market.

I think the phone takes horrible quality video tho and I have set to 4k and it's very grainy and yellow.

Well you can't expect it to perform well in low light. Were you shooting under CFL lighting? I found the camera tends to shoot yellow under cfls. Outside in daylight I have found video phenomenal. I shoot 4k, then stabilize then and downscale. It produces very very good 1080p. 4k resolution is basically never needed in normal life. Shoot it and downscale it. You will get alot less noise and a much smaller file. It's pretty much usable at most iso's. Before downscaling change the white balance.
Alot to go through. But it's the only reason to really shoot 4k.
I came from an iPhone 6+ and Oh boy did everyone overhype this camera.
It might be slightly better than what I was used on the iPhone but not to the scale everyone was claiming.

Google Pixel - Night Video Test - 1080p60FPS

Hey everyone,
Here's my night time video test using the Google Pixel: https://youtu.be/8Jw9FUB28a0
It's not great when there isn't lighting. With bright artificial lighting the night looks much better. The camera seems to repeatedly focus which can be annoying. Maybe that's because of the fast moving objects?
Let me know what you think.

This is my main and only complaint about the pixel, low light video recording. It is horrible. I'm hoping it is a software issue that can be fixed, but I'm lead to believe it's most likely a hardware issue. The camera can't keep focused for more than a few seconds, everything is always blurry and extremely noisy. It makes no sense because the camera takes amazing pictures and is top notch so why should the video recording quality not be the same???
I have to agree. My Pixel XL is awful in low light, with lots of noise. But the daytime shots are incredible.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not so bad.

I'm finding that most of the pictures I'm taking of people seem to be softened by the software. The softening of the pictures actually make them look pretty bad. Anyone else having this issue? Just using default settings when taking the pictures

Pretty happy with color range and image sharpness
Low-light obviously lacking a bit, but over all I think the camera is fine.

No raw support?
I like the camera especially bokeh effect is very good.

Thanks! I have a lot more photos to shoot. I will be adding to that album with many more pictures this weekend.
Has miui10 added any camera changes for the Mi Mix 2s?
Hi guys, curious, has anyone experienced choppiness when viewing through the camera? and the potrait mode is terrible contrary to much of the rave reviews.. the background blur is not uniform most of the time.. any advice or tips?

Agree, portrait mode is terrible, also all the photos add some kind of softening filter. Only good thing is that you can edit the center of the photo so you can move the bokeh effect.

Well I use open camera mostly due to options. At low light I've found that the image quality is GREAT if you use 4MP(16:9) checked with 9MP and 12MP(always at 16:9 ratio).
In 4MP at very low light I was super impressed(always 100% jpeg quality in the open camera app). Test it yourself, it worth your time. Just make sure you have a steady surface
EDIT: uploading pictures 12MP, 9MP, 4MP
Image difference 2-3 seconds apart - 9:00pm (4MP>12MP>9MP). Don't know why 4MP is so much better(less MP is worse than 12MP)

What do you give up by using open camera (does tele and wide angle switch work and how is 4K video etc) so far I like the manual mode of the stock miui camera app but also like the idea of using a standard app off the play store

Well if you want optical zoom you still need to use the stock camera, 4K rec? you can but I pref 1080p also I do like to adjust the bitrate of the video and audio and open camera does have that. I use to use this app to my 1+1 too
I like to customize everything and miui camera well ..2-3 settings at best
P.S. Open camera also doesn't have panorama but talking to the dev and said he's planning to include a panorama soon - Did you check the low light quality in 4MP? impressive(compered to higher res)
testing
