I have a Leckerton UHA-6S.mkii external DAC/amp that I use for highly sensitive IEMs, since the noise floor with the stock chip on phones is too high, and the volume steps on android go from silent to deadly loud at volume step 2. I have successfully used it with my old Nexus 5 with no issues, but as soon as I upgraded to 6.0 on the Nexus 5, I noticed the output was downsampled to mono and sounded quite bad. I wasn't sure if this was my custom kernel (ElementalX on the Nexus 5) at the time, so instead of troubleshooting, I waited until I got my 6P in.
Unfortunately I'm having the same issue; USB audio output to the DAC is still being downsampled to mono and sounds pretty bad. Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve this? Is this a software bug in 6.0, or is there a setting that I can change?

Weird, I am noticing the same mono mixdown on my Nexus 9. I have a type C OTG cable en route, and will report on whether Nexus 6P also plays mono. Very odd.

So I got the USB C OTG cable today for the Nexus 6P and can confirm that the audio is downsampling to mono. My nexus 5 was not doing this, even on 6.0, so I'm curious what the issue is.

Interesting. So I called Google's Nexus Support Specialist number and spoke with someone, who said 1) he had no idea what a USB DAC is (!) and 2) he'd "Escalate this" to a higher level tech support. They placed me on hold, then came back and said that I should call Turtle Beach since it is likely an issue on their end. I've put in a support ticket with them, so we'll see what they say (I have a feeling it will be blaming google / android, ha).
But what I'm not getting is, why would Nexus 5 (stock everything) work fine with the DAC, and Nexus 6P is doing this weird mono thing? The google Nexus support guy had no answer, other than to say he would bring my issue up in the next meeting and ask that Nexus Support Specialists receive training on USB Audio, which apparently they currently do not.
Long story short I really don't want to have to get a new DAC for my 6P when the one I have worked fine with the N5.
Also using a Dragonfly with the 6P and Google's USB type C to USB Standard A Adaptor. All fine and in Stereo.
I'm getting the same problem on my 6P with a generic PCM2704 outputting spdif over coax to a minidsp in my car. It definitely worked in stereo on lollipop, and same deal with a behringer uca202 over headphones or analogue RCA out :crying:
I found a slight work around, streaming tidal lossless via USB audio player pro and I'm back to glorious stereo
The same issue with HTC One M8 on Android 6 with HiFiMeDIY Sabre Android USB DAC (ES9023+PCM2706).
Right now I've returned to Android 5.1 and USB audio is stereo here. So it's Android 6 issue
The defect in issue tracker: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=194130
did anyone get a resolution to this problem?
sorry for resurrecting this several months later
I only ever noticed the mono issue when using spdif out. Never had a problem using a xonar u7 with headphones.
Using USB Audio Player Pro for spdif fixed the mono issue on any card I tried. Question is, is the issue still present on nougat?
The issue was fixed in Android 7, I've tested in my Nexus 9.

Hi guys, I just got my nexus 4 today. My friend brought it down to India from the US and so far I love everything about the phone. Its absolutely stunning but I did notice this one issue and just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.
The phone speakers work absolutely fine but when I plug in any earphones, the sound quality is screwed up. I can't hear lyrics of songs and the music seems to be missing an entire section of it. I think the mids aren't heard all. Even the ringtones and SMS tones sound weird with the earphones plugged in. And another odd bug is that sometimes when I plug in the earphones, the phone spontaneously opens voice search. Or when I select a ringtone or notification tone, voice search just opens.
Has anyone else had this issue? And do you think its a hardware problem or a software bug. All I did with the phone was unlock and root it so far. I really hope it isn't hardware cuz I don't even live in the US and sending it in for warranty is unrealistic.

Have you tried a second set of headphones or speakers? It sounds like the headphone connector is not making a proper connection. I've found that the jack on the N4 is quite tight. I have a 3.5mm cable that won't click in properly but all my headphones fit fine.
Yes I tried 2 sets so far and the same thing happens. And these earphones work perfectly on other phones.
I just noticed another bug. Voice search can't recognize what I'm saying with the earphones plugged in. But it works fine without earphones.

Could be a faulty jack.
Since it works fine on speaker mode, and the headphones work fine with other phones, thats the only thing I feel that could be wrong with it.
So it should be a pretty minor thing to fix then, right? It couldn't be a serious problem like a sound card/chip problem or something worse?
If its just an earphone jack connection error I don't mind waiting for the nexus 4 to launch here in India and just paying the service center to fix it since it should be cheap and I rarely listen to music on my phone anyway.
If it could be a serious issue then I should probably mail it to the US to have it fixed :/

Are you by any chance trying the earphones with mic?
Yes both of them had mics. But why should that be an issue?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yup, that's probably the issue. Take my example, I have two Motorola phones i.e. Defy+ and Electrify. Their earphones are not compatible to each other and gives the same issue mentioned by you.
Try connecting an earphone without mic, it would be fine.
--
As there are two types of earphones with mic available, you'll have to try different ones to find one which is compatible. For me, the earphones + mic for iPhone works fine on my Electrify but not on my Defy+
OK thanks. Let me try this out on earphones that don't have a mic. I don't have any around so I'll have to go borrow a friend's.
By the way. The earphones I used were the Samsung galaxy s2 ear buds and a superdry headset with built in mic

If it sounds all whishy washy and is missing complete frequency ranges that could mean the channels are crossing over into each other.
I really do think it's a faulty headphone jack.
this happens to me with s2 and lg 2x headphones

OK I just tested the phone on my friend's speakers and the audio output is fine. Guess it was just those earphones that it wasn't working with.

u were having a problem because there are two standards of the 3.5mm jack... one is what apple does, which was actually wrong but has now been accepted as the correct standard :| ...companies like Sony used the global standard up till the Xperia Arc of 2011, but with their 2012 phones they switched to the format apple uses....the difference is in the configuration of the rings, specifically when theres an inline mic included with the headset....u can test thing by playing a song through the headphones, when u hold the button on the headphones, the sound will become ok...

Which are the headphones which didnt work and the one which did work?
I've had headphone jack problems with both my Android phones before the N4 -- in particular, Pandora would prematurely skip to the next song because it interpreted some contact bounce or some such from the headphone jack as a button press. With the N4, I've noticed that if I'm watching a video using headphones (plain headphones, no microphone or controls) and rotate the plug in the jack, voice search will pop up. I think the Android software that detects button pushes on a headphone control is too sensitive.
It didn't work using the galaxy s2 earphones and Superdry headphones. Both of em have mics.
It worked with my friend's Sony xperia s earphones and with some random speakers.

Are the earphones supposed to go in at an angle? (Can't believe I never noticed this before)
It looks weird, never had a phone that does that.
Also, where is the headset icon?
Its the only phone I've had that shows no differences from having earphones plugged in.
Also, earphone volume isn't that loud at all, can anyone confirm?
seems a lot quieter through the earphones when compared to my One-X although rear speaker is nice and loud (and clear too!)
Your thoughts?

I thought the earphones volume was pretty low as well. I hope it can be fixed with a software patch or mod

Thank you for this excellent explanation. I had exactly the same problem with my Sony MH650 headset. I already thought my headphone jack was faulty.
And thanks Apple for bringing up this "standard".

Can anyone who has the Axon 7, let us know how the audio quality is with headphones. I'm stuck between this and the OnePlus 3, but I have a pair of Sennheiser Momentums and if the Axon 7 can blow people away with a good pair of headphones I might have to go for it!

I'm very interested in this my self. The audio of the Axon 7 is said to be very good but I have yet to see any comparisons of just how it stacks up to other devices.
The OP3 has very good audio out put also from what I have read. It's said to be on par or perhaps a bit better than the iPhone and just behind the HTC 10.
I would assume the Axon 7 would be superior to the OP3 and not sure how it compares to the HTC 10. Though PC Magazine's review mentioned the HTC 10 was louder with it 1V output from the headphone jack. I'm a little disappointed by this. If true, it doesn't meant the Axon doesn't sound better. It just won't drive hard to drive headphone as well. Not a problem for most people and IEM, but I have a few hard to drive on ears that could make use of the extra power.
It should offer excellent audio from both the dual front facing speakers, that get very loud, and the headphone jack. That plus the high res display that is Daydrean ready makes it my choice over the OP3.
here is a little write up I found:
https://community.zteusa.com/thread/2110
I am anxiously awaiting my Axon 7, but I can comment on the OP3's jack since you brought it up.
My OP3 blows away my Nexus 6. My completely stock OP3 has a stronger output than my N6, which had Viper4Android installed.
No reason why the Axon shouldn't be at least as strong as the OP3.
I hope those dual chips can output some serious power...
I'm happy to hear the OP3 has good audio output! I would probably buy it right now, but it seems Oneplus is having stocking issues... "Ships within 14 days" is what it says on their website, UGH!!
Don't really like his comparison videos, but for audio, this is one is pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz92h5JJxfg
Of course, that's only over the speakers and not wired. Wired it should beat pretty much anyone, based on the chipset being used.
Okay, I think it was actually my fault that there was an audio problem. I have been using an app called Automatic Call Recording for a few months on a couple of other android phones. I had installed it on my Axon 7 while I was setting it up. I uninstalled it and now my audio seems to be better. Everything is quite loud and actually sounds great. I can't use the earbuds at max volume without hurting my ears. Just don't use that app and you should be fine lol.
"I received my Axon 7 today and I can honestly say I am very disappointed in the audio quality. I was expecting the dual speakers and included earbuds to output at least good audio, and somehow I can barely hear anything from either the dual speakers or the earbuds even at full volume. I am extremely disappointed. When I watch a Youtube video using the dual speakers I turn the volume up to max and still the audio is very quiet. I made a few phone calls and could barely hear the other person on the dual speakers, earbuds, or normal earpiece. Idk if there is something wrong with my Axon 7 specifically, or if maybe there will be a software update soon to fix this, but this is completely unacceptable."

That's really odd. The PC Mag review said it was louder than both the HTC 10 and Alcatel Idol 4S. Have you tried messing with the audio effects?
EDIT: Never mind.
When I get my Axon 7 in the next 24 to 48 hours. I will post my initial impression of the Audio Quality/Power Output. My ASUS ZenFone 2 was average to slightly below in terms of power output. So I will know how good or bad the Axon 7 is in power output.
I was able to make my OnePlus One's dual mono speakers sound relatively decent with a lot more bass than they originally output (it was basically nonexistent until the volume is maxed out) using ViPER4Android. They sound almost like the iPhone speaker, which is decent enough in terms of bass and quality for a single bottom-firing speaker. I can only imagine what it can do with these dual front-facing stereo speakers.
Have the axon 7 and am had a little listening session last night.
Headphone ? : V-Moda M100.
Past phones with good DAC? HTC 10, Note 5 and S6 (Same DAC as note 5).
Compared to the others, the DAC delivers. It's a relatively flat sounding DAC so you get no shape in sound. Everything is clear and concise. The output is great. Drives the M100 fine but then again, it's a 32 ohm headphone. Using power amp (yes I like that better than neutron), I set it up to play music in 24 bit mode. Immediately with the AKM 4491 (axon DAC), you hear how crappy mp3s are. Even at 320kbps. High bit rate acc sound enter but with this phone, lossless shines. The difference is not like you'll dump your mp3 library but you'll enjoy lossless a lot more. Great stereo separation, fantastic noise floor, no white noise. Just clear clean audio. BTW this phone has two audio chips as mentioned however. One is for recording and the other for listening. The amplifier is the AKM 380. Overall very pleased with the sound. Better than the note 5 Wolfson DAC and hard to compare with the HTC 10 since I only owned it for a week.

Just watching the htc u11 coverage and the noise cancelling type c headphones. Would it increase the experience on devices like the axon 7 when we've still got a headphone jack ?

shouldn't it be the same? I don't think there would be a difference besides the noise cancelling. Maybe those headphones get the power for that stuff from the USB but some noise cancelling 3.5mm with battery should be the same...?
Otherwise the only way I can think of to test if they're better or worse is by modding them so that the noise cancel is off, and test with USB-C then put them a 3.5 jack and test them too.
But you won't be able to charge, for what it's worth
Please correct me if I'm wrong, I probably am anyways
The audio wouldn't use the device's amp and dac and so the audio could be better on phones with really bad dacs and amps but on phones like the Axon 7 and LG v20 then the audio would most likely be worse.
You get an audio that is the same and more objective across devices because the headphones uses its own dac and amp, so the headphones can be better tuned by the manufacturer because your player no longer matter. Also, the power supply from type-c enables active noise cancelling without battery such as JBL reflect aware c, HTC usonic of U11, Xiaomi active noise cancelling earphones.
However, senny is probably correct as usb-c earphones may not use high end dac and amp.
Dac's are only connected to 3,5mm jack, stereo speakers and probably to microphone (to be confirmed) so there will be no Dolby features with type c headphones.
There one advantage - if you have active noice cancelation they can be powered via USB type c the same time you keep using it.

With the excellent DAC/AMP and audio capabilities of the Axon 7, I don't really see the benefit of USB-C headphone. And as I'm nor sure if the USB-C headphones would bypass the built in DAC/AMP it may be worse, I don't know. Either way I don't really see an advantage. Of course you loose the ability to listen to music while charging.
If Audeze comes out with a USB-C version of their Cipher cable that has a built in DAC/AMP tuned for their specific headphones (EL-8, Sine, iSine), then that might actually be worth getting. But as of yet the Cipher cables is Apple Lightning port only and their headphone are expensive audiophile grade headphones.

Why? Usually the headphones that are included for free now aren't very good sounding.Who going to pay a fortune for headphones that sound as bad as the standard offerings?
If USB-C becomes they way things go for headphone audio, which remains to be seen, you'll have a range of choices of various price point. Only those that want truely steller audio will spend a "fortune", just as it is now.

Eh, I don't know. If you refering to a high quality DAC/AMP like whats in the Axon 7 maybe not cheap but not a fortune either. But most phones have a mediocre audio out put in comparison. I sometimes use headphones with an $15 external Mpow Bluetooth receiver that delivers more power then my other phones (Nexus 6P & LG G5). There's always the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that the few phones that don't offer a headphone jack come with. Of course lets not forget most devices still bring a headphone jack, and hopefully it will stay that way for a while.
At any rate as far as the original question posed in this thread, a USB-C headphones will not really being anything to the table as far as the Axon 7 is concerned as it has one of the top headphone jacks currently available.
Until someone offers a very high quality USB-C pair of headphones that can outperform the A7's built in solution it's not needed. Even if and when something like that becomes available it only for you average user, but those who really really care about their audio and are willing to pay for every last bit of it.
I just don't see it costing a fortune, unless you want REALLY REALYY good audio, pretty much as is the case today.

So, if I'm not wrong, using any type-c/3.5mm converter (especially the one from HTC), improves the input and output sound quality of every 3.5mm headphone jack+microphone on the Oneplus 5?
So, if I buy a cheap type-c/3.5mm converter and I plug it in my Oneplus 5, then the sound coming of the headphone will always be improved?
Regardless of the Headphone brand and specs? And as a bonus, there will never be any compatibility issues like with the microphones or with the headphone control buttons?
These converters sound magical.
Did anyone try one on a 1+5 yet?

The dongle and the headphones have to be high spec for good performance. But the op5 jack Is better than most phones like the s8. Watch Juan's real audio review

I know that the Jack on the OnePlus 5 is supposed to be really good.
The problem though is the microphone of my headphones which either do not work well or do not work at all on this phone.
And I'm talking about headphones that work with no problems at all on any other devices I possess.
I never thought that Oneplus would implement a proprietary 3.5mm jack on its phones, but it would seem they did.

No , No..the headphone jack is not proprietary, it just comes with different qualities, kinda like a micro usb port with usb 2 or usb 3. Same port just better hardware
Has anyone tried to compare the audio quality of OP6 via headphones jack with that of OP6T via the dongle? Just trying to find out if OnePlus uses another DAC chip in Type C port or the one in SD845.

The Type C dongle is passive the DAC is in the phone and not the dongle whihch is dissapointing and the quality is around the same as OP6 better off trying to source a 1st gen Google dongle or find a brand that makes a good one.

Exactly. The audio quality out of the dongle is so disappointing. It makes my FiiO F9 Pro soundstage sound narrower that it's supposed to. That's why I'm currently deciding whether if I should buy a FiiO Q1 MK II. But I never tried any of these amps before, I don't know if there would be a substantial improvement over the dongle

Apparently this is a good Dongle was recoended to me by another user on here, Odyssey Type-C to 3.5mm DAC dongle $10 Should improve the quality a bit and be better for the amp you mentioned

If there is a DAC in the phone, does plugging in a cable like this (which as a DAC built-in) tell the phone to send a non-processed signal straight out to the cable (so that the cable can do the d/a conversion)???

I'm not entirely sure how it works but the Type C bullets by OnePlus have a custom DAC in them and they're made for the OP6T

Either that, or turn on OTG

Finally got my FiiO Q1 MK II and I'm back with an answer. I don't even have to turn on OTG for usb audio to work. It detects the DAC and it automatically recognise the DAC as headphones
I'm using Firefly Dac. Is there reason why it sound lower?

I have no idea. This is my first time trying out external DAC

Is there a way to confirm which DAC it's using? I'm not doubting it's passing audio from phone to your headphones but is the D/A conversion still being done on the phone and sending an analog signal thru your active cord OR it the cord actively doing the D/A conversion? Is there a way to tell?

I read it in a Reddit thread where it was mentioned that if you're using a dongle with a built-in DAC, it will use the DAC in the dongle instead of the one in the phone. I'd assume it's the same for other DAC as well. https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/9uu3jy/oneplus_6t_has_an_analog_dac_inside_the_usbc_port/
Edit: After testing for many times (I hope the port life won't reduce after those tests), I can conclude that the phone is using the external DAC. Noticeable difference in the soundstage
Then theoretically op6t with fiio k1 should work, right? I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 598
I don't use any external DAC. I stream in the car, and I use V4A for audio processing, and it sounds incredible.
Get yourself one of these https://www.nexum-design.com/aqua - couldn't recommend them enough. I have one and it is absolutely the best 'dongle' you can get. Battery does take a hit because of the integrated amp, but well worth it...
