Hi All,
I bought a Nexus 4 on eBay thinking I could fix it but I am really struggling.
The nexus 4 has TWRP 2.8.6.0 but that is all.
I cannot enable USB debugging as I don't have any rom installed.
I have tried a USB OTG cable with power, but have learned that the phone still cannot output the right power? The light on my usb stick comes on but TWRP does not list any USB OTG.
This phone does not have an SD card slot, so I cannot load anthing this way.
Is it impossible to get this phone working?

Will I need adb drivers to be working in windows for me to be able to do this? because so far I have been unable to successfully install any even using NRT to help.

(Read the thread thoroughly, and take notes, its real easy to get lost in the middle of the procedure and mess it up, and having to start again).
Flashing the stock rom is done entirely via fastboot, so you shouldnt need to worry about adb.
If you can boot into bootloader you should be able to flash stock image, once you get the windows drivers sorted. Luckily I'm on a Mac, so drivers haven't been an issue. I had a similar scenario sometime ago, and after flashing stock, all was good in the world again. I may be wrong, but you'll probably need the latest platform-tools (which contains fastboot) if you're flashing the latest stock images. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one).

This is good information, but I cannot get any further that plugging the phone into the PC, I have tried 4 different usb cables and with them all windows 7 and XP says "unknown device".
I wasn't sent the original cable from the owner which I am asking to do if they have it, but it may be a long shot for them to still have it.
Looks like I need the original usb cable?

I don't think the cable needs to be original, I've used a Motorola cable on my N4 to flash stock, with no problems.
Is the phone in fastboot mode when you connect to pc?
Have you tried these drivers?

For information I am using a cable from a usb cable that came from a Nexus 5.
When the phone is connected to the PC it had an android lying down with an open chest.
When pointing to the android developer sdk drivers as above it does it's usual thing of saying it is already up to date below that still saying unknown device. I'm so frustrated right now.

Can you reboot to the main bootloader screen?
The reason i ask is .. When you see the android lying down is there a list below showing the phone stats? If not, possibly this is why windows is reporting an unknown device.
You should try to get back into fastboot
This has the info to get to bootloader if youre not sure how..

Sounds like youre in the right mode. The problem would likely be on the pc/driver side.
P.S. in fastboot mode, you only need to use fastboot on pc .

The driver issue is a massive stumbling block.
I'm still not sure if the cable will work.
I understand I can use fastboot after the PC recognises the nexus 4.
I have a Lubuntu PC this may help me but I have no idea where to start in terms of the drivers.

I use a mac, so im no use when it comes to linux variants etc.
Depending on the power of your pc, you could try using a virtual machine (i.e. virtualbox running windows xp if you have xp disk, or even windows 7). Ive done this before on the mac (xp virtual machine) and it works. This way you can install the correct drivers on a fresh install of windows, without messing with the host OS.
Otherwise, best bet is to uninstall any drivers in your current windows, and install divers from google link i posted earlier.

just outta curiosity, when you plug the phone in (in bootloader mode) change dir to the one with fastboot.exe in and type (in command prompt):
fastboot devices
what output do you get?

Just to check I am doing it correctly, I launch cmd in windows, change the directory to the location where fastboot is and type "fastboot devices". The result of this is it just gives the directory name again waiting for another command.
I hope I'm not coming across as ungrateful, I assure you this is not the case.

When I turn my n7 on all I get is the android with the red triangle over it and underneath it says no command. I'm unable to do anything with it. When I press power & volume up all it does is dim the screen/undim it.
From what I've been reading, I think I need to load a recovery image, but when I try to load it, I'll either get a DLL error, or in command prompt it'll give me an error saying the image can't be loaded.
The DLL error is something like adbwin.dll & its frustrating because its in the sdk\tools folder, I can see it & I've tried setting environmental variables in control panel/system to the DLL path & I still can't get my system to see it. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm using windows 8 and the recovery image I tried was twrp 2.2.1. I'm missing a step somewhere I'm thinking.

Once you install all of the drivers it'll be a breeze....

Tried this already too just last night. I've tried using samsungs mobile phone drivers, asus', and the naked drivers. I can't get this thing to be recognized. its not even charging when plugged in to my PC. I've also tried it on a w8 PC & win 7 PC.
That's an entirely different issue then. Try a different cable?

Tried a few. The original stock cable, a cable from my cell phone & a diffferent phone. I also tried different USB ports lol. I've tried everything I can think of. Thanks for the suggestions though. Open to more.

Have you tried to do something simple at the error screen with fastboot? For instance just do a fastboot devices? Does it return anything? Have you properly configured your PC to run adb and fastboot? Are you trying to run fastboot/adb from the directory all the files are stored in? I know this may be basic stuff to some, not sure of your level of skill, but even still professionals still can overlook something.
Here is the latest Android Composite ADB Interface Driver straight from SDK.

If you can get into bootloader then you can erase your existing partitons then flash all the images from the Nexus Factory Images package to restore your device to stock.

I tried running cmd to check for fast boot devices but nothing came up. Tried root kit to detect & nothing is detected either. All my files are located in C:\ which is where I had fast boot pointed to.
I'd say I'm pretty noob at this. It was originally rooted & no orobs till this instant. I'm pretty positive adb/fast boot is installed correctly.

I think my problem is I can't get into anything on my tablet. I can't get into boot loader & I can't enable USB debugging. I'll try the drivers tho & see if it helps

USB debugging is not needed to use Fastboot.
Have you tried power and down? That's how you get into recovery. I just reread the first post and you stated that you're pushing power and up volume.

yea I've tried power + down also. @ user name I'm unable to get into boot loader then. fast boot doesn't detect any fast boot devices

the device charges when plugged into the wall. not on the PC. so I'm sure its hardware. I'll try to post some screen shots later this evening.

I took the OTA to 4.3 on my Nexus 7. It was previously unlocked and rooted, but had no kernels, etc changed. After the update ran, I lost root as expected, however, in trying to get it back, I've discovered I'm having a couple of other issues.
First, the device is no longer working properly via USB on my PCs. On both my Win 7 and Win 8 PCs, the device won't properly connect to where I can browse files or anything else. On the Win 8 computer, I see a Nexus 7 device in Device manager, but drivers won't install. I downloaded the drivers from the Asus site, but trying to manually install them doesn't work on the Win 7 machine, and on the Win 8 machine, they install but don't seem to be working with the Nexus 7 as it still shows a problem in Device Manager.
The tablet also will not boot into recovery mode. I can power it up into fastboot mode, but if I select "Recovery Mode" and hit the power button, I just got the Android with the red triangle for a few minutes before it boots back into the OS. After doing some searching, I saw where you might need to have it plugged into a PC to get it to go into recovery, but that doesn't work, either (might be tied to the USB problem).
Ideas?
Did you turn on developer options, and USB debugging? Have you tried USB connection type PTP instead of MTP?
If you have the stock recovery, the red triangle and Android are normal. You can bring up a blue options menu by pressing the power and volume up buttons from the red triangle Android.

Yes.
Try another driver source. Wugfresh's installation is a lot tougher than Skipsoft's, but try the other guy 's system.

I was using the stock drivers off the Asus page. I'll look around for the two you mention. I assume they're posted on here somewhere.
And about the recovery just try flashing another recovery from fastboot

Without USB access? That's my dilemma.
OK, I'm getting closer. I got TWRP installed and rerooted it. I had to do the "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" on the Dev Options screen. Then it would work via ADB.
Still not browsing files yet on my desktop, but at least I know I'm talking to it. So now I'll play with the driver installation a bit.
EDIT: Well, drivers reinstalled for about the 4th time, and it's still not allowing me to browse files from my desktop. Galaxy S4 works fine as soon as I plug it in, even if I also uninstall it's drivers. Ideas? I obviously have it working over USB because I can give it commands and reboot it via the PC.
OK, try this one. Plug in your tablet to pc, go to hardware manager, find your Android Device then choose Uninstall (choose Remove all drivers for this device), unplug and plug in your tablet again. Your Windows should discover few new devices (mine has discovered three) and download drivers for them then you should see Android ADB Interface in Android Devices and Nexus 7 in Mobile Devices.

have the same problem except one thing: no one 3 computers don`t detect my nexus. have no reaction in device manager, on connection nexus as mtp/debug/fastboot. Only usb-otg works.

After you plug your nexus in have you unlocked the screen to see if it is asking you to authorize the tablet?
What other steps have you taken? Have you installed proper drivers? Have you manually chosen to update drivers with the sdk drivers if in device manager is showing the nexus? Have you tried the drivers from Asus?

I personally did all of those things. After having the Nexus "forget" all the other PC authorizations on the dev screen, I finally got it to accept ADB commands, just not to properly install drivers that would allow me to browse files like it had done on 4.2.

Nexus doesn`t appears in device manager. At all. It starts to charage, but no reaction in device manager, no any reaction(except charging) at nexus. On computer it looks like i didn`t connect anything. I`ve trying to intall drivers as legasy hardware, but nothing changes. Sorry for my english.

Try turning off usb debugging. My tablet cannot connect to pc but with usb debugging off it at least recognises tablet as a media device and this enables me to view its files

I have recently been playing with roms and stuff on my n4. (did it on other devices, and never had any problem i couldnt fix)
but right now I kinda screwed up so bad, that I need some help.
I kinda wiped all the data on my phone from the cwm recovery.
and I'm stuck with this situation:
I can boot to bootloader + recovery
I can't boot to any rom (because there is none)
I can't connect to any pc because they won't recognize he's there (forever alone... ) (and yes i've tried all kinds of drivers)
I can't connect with adb because I can't turn on usb debugging mode.
So right now I'm stuck
I've come to the conclusion that i probably need to use fastboot fix this, but like I said before, no computer will recognize my n4. (not showing up in device manager)
also tried about 6 different usb cables - no luck
different computers ( ubuntu - mac - windows) - no luck
So is there any smart guy out there who can help me?

I apologise for potentially getting your hopes up, but I am in the exact same situation. I am very much interested in this thread.
Google 15 second adb drivers xda. You probably need to get adb and fastboot setup for the pc to recognize your device. In order to fix it you'll meet to use fastboot or adb commands

You need to delete all your driver files from your pc and start over.
There is no reason for you to not be able to connect via fastboot.
Find a clean win7 machine and start over, installing the fastboot drivers before connecting your phone.

I've tried installing the drivers but whilst the drivers claim to have installed correctly, my phone is still not recognised by my computer in Device manager. I've tried uninstalling all previous drivers before trying this.
Before we go on - should I be trying to connect my phone to the computer when turned off, in bootloader or in recovery?

The phone needs to be on, doesn't matter if it's in fastboot or recovery. You're going to need to use fastboot do I'd try it there

Is fastboot essentially bootloader? I've tried in the initial bootloader menu and I've tried having clicked 'start' from the bootloader.
In the bootloader it tells me fastboot is enabled, btw.

When you're in the bootloader you can run fastboot commands. With your device plugged into the pc, from a command prompt opened on the same folder as fastboot.exe, run the command fastboot devices. Does fastboot return your device info? If so you're good to go running fastboot and flashing a factory image

But my problem is that fastboot Will never work if my pc wont even know my n4 is there (and also with adb/fastboot devices golving no response Either ) or am I wrong here?

Not at the moment. I have had this appear in the past but this is the point I'm trying to get back to. Unfortunately I can't work out how to get it to appear here. My device is in the bootloader.

Brief update - I think. My computer began installing the drivers again, but told me the device suddenly 'disconnected'. I think it's a hardware issue and that the port isn't seated properly. I'm going to replace the USB port and see if that helps.

Did you do a clean install?
Have you used a different USB cable? Some cables are charging-only, with no indication otherwise. Internally damaged cables can also turn into charging only cables. Ironically, I just replaced one hooked into my daughter's phone today that would only charge intermittently.
There is no reason that wiping partitions in recovery would prevent your phone from being recognized by your PC at all.
Try a clean install of the drivers on a fresh pc with a different cable.

This is typical when you connected the phone to the PC before installing the drivers. Windows will sometimes install a generic driver when you hook up the phone, preventing it from detecting the need for adb and fastboot drivers

I tried uninstalling all drivers, including in USBDeview before running 15 second drivers then trying to connect my phone in fastboot/bootloader mode, with various cables and various ports. Nothing happened!
I've bought another USB cable which should be arriving soon. I've also bought a new charging/USB port to replace that inside the phone.
If it Works with that cable please give me a headsup

Well, I had similar issues when I bought this phone (coming from a HTC one s) connecting to fastboot.
What I did was:
Delete all drivers related to adb/fastboot/android (use a software to completely clean the files).
Booted my phone into fastboot mode.
Connect to PC and wait for windows to show the new hardware dialog.
Install the correct drivers (which i had downloaded and extracted) using the dialog box.
Profit.

Did you try on a different PC, installing the adb and fastboot drivers before connecting the phone for the first time?
Have you tried a different USB cable?

A brief update
I remembered I have a second Android phone knocking around. I plugged this in with one of the cables from earlier - perfect installation with all drivers, etc. This has further convinced me that the hardware of the USB port on the phone is the issue.
Thanks for all help - I'll update again if the hardware change works, or doesn't.

Hey guys ,let's get straight. I'm totally dumb.
After flashing Lollipop factory img which reseted my internal storage (made a backup on PC), today I decided to try AOSP. Downloaded with my phone, flashed it. But the file was corrupted (bad download or something). Results : I only had that rom on my internal storage, my phone won't boot. I thought I could use NRT, although it as always worked fine, now it keeps telling me "adb device not found", "no fastboot devices". So, actually I can't do anything and I can't see what can I do.. already tried reinstalling drivers, but windows isn't even showing my nexus 4 on device manager
Looks like I need help, and sleep too..

Hmm can you get at least to the bootloader menu. If you can, there's still hope. At this time, you're better off using the manual commands rather than the NRT (the NRT use a set of pre-configured scripts and doesn't always end up where you would like to) Have you tried to also plug your device inside another USB port?

Yes I can acces to bootloader and TRWP. Tried another USB port, another USB cable, using manual commands it says " <waiting for device>" and nothing happen..
What drivers are you using. I use the Google usb driver available here

You also need the android platform tools installed on your pc for adb and fast boot commands to work. I use this installer

Thanks buddy , but my drivers were fine before all this. And now i can't reinstall it that way since my nexus isn't even showing up on device manager, I used another method from NRT. Gonna test on w7..
EDIT: Problem solved using windows 7. There seems to have problem with drivers on windows 8.1
Yes, in windows 8 you need to disable driver signature enforcement. In windows 7 no problem.

I tried a Nougat rom for the Nexus 4 which was available as a full update package (including system bootloader rom etc) and installed it with the update command from adb instead of from custom rom.
now my phone is bricked and I cant seem to get it fixed.
It either gets stuck in a bootloop, or i can force switch it to bootloader mode. From there I can go to recovery but the stock recovery is useless.
Problem is when i connect this to my windows 10 pc, it shows no sign of being detected. I installed drivers over and over including the universal ADB and fastboot drivers available here on XDA. it doesnt show up under adb devices command and even the Nexus 4 rootkit doesnt detect it as a phone.
I wanna make this phone working again. I'm guessing the way is to go back to stock image and then re-root and re-flash custom recovery and ROM. but even for this, it should be detected by the PC and adb command and rootkit right? Is there something I'm overlooking here?

In that thread, I read the people are able to use adb on Windows 10. If that doesn't work, find a Windows 7 PC or boot to ubuntu using bootable pendrive and flash the factory images using fastboot.

I read many users complaining about that. You can try that installer; as I mentioned - users have reported that they were able to use adb on Windows 10 after installing adb using that installer. If that doesn't work try the second suggestion (Ubuntu/ Linux)

i tried the installer but it made no difference. i tried it my win 7 partition as well but it didnt show up in the device manager.. i think usb debugging must have been disabled with my new rom flash. but even then i dont get why it wont show up as anything in devman...
any command i try ends with waiting for device and since i cant find the device in devman I cant even update the driver manually. I guess I could give linux a shot
Hey I finally figured out the problem. Its unbelievable. The usb port of the device was slightly bent in such a way that every cable I tried never really connected with the phone. I twisted it up a little and now its being detected as fastboot. The drivers you provided work like a charm now. Thanks for all the help !

It seems I have the same prob, as my N4 too doesn't get detected. But my ph can charge with USB when I connect to PC.
How you twisted USB port? I mean it has very less room to insert any tool.
