Android & Chrome OS to merge. Maybe Pixel C will get it first - Pixel C General

Not that it will happen this year. But given this article Chrome OS and Android will become a unified OS. It seems possible, the Pixel C might see it before others. Since the Pixel C is a cross of laptop and tablet.

Link was broken so this one should work.
This always seemed the obvious outgrowth of getting Android apps into Chrome--they really seem to need each other.

Counter to that

Firefox OS - What the F**K? (An answer from Mozilla CEO)

There has been a lot of criticism for Firefox OS lately, such as that the world does not need another mobile OS. The thing that I think they are missing is that Firefox OS has a completely different concept as opposed to Android and iOS. It's trying to make applications platform independent, so that app developers are not tied to a single ecosystem anymore.
In fact, the reason I started this ranting about what Firefox OS is, is because of a new video from D: Dive Into Mobile conference. An interview was taken from Gary Kovacs (Mozilla CEO) who outlines exactly why Firefox OS is getting into the market despite the competition. I feel that this message needs to be communicated a lot more and the word needs to be spread that it's not trying to be yet another mobile OS, it's trying to change the market as we know it and even if Firefox OS does not get as big as Mozilla would like to, it will trigger something amazing
You can find the video over at The Firefox OS blog
For the record, I'm not some fanboy, I just enjoy seeing changes in the world of technology
I would like to see firefox OS one of the top OSs in the market.
To know it is the lightest OS on hardwere is enough to like it.
Shame that Samsung will not deal with it, hope Tizen fails like pada too

 thanks for the info dude,
but in my word, we must appreciate the others mind and thinks to be different, that's why world have wonderful color
let happen and just see it :good:
Dader don't you put no curse on Tizen. That's a bad beast right there.

Google's Project Treble for OnePlus 3(T)?

Please suggest a way to make our device get the Project Treble officially.
More details on Google Project Treble,
Thanks.
This can only be accomplished by the manufacturer of the phone (Oneplus) in corporation with the SoC manufacturer (Qualcomm). But we can always say pleeease with a big nice smile in the Oneplus forum and hope for the best. ?

As per the official OnePlus forums from I visited, I have read them saying "Treble is interesting, we will keep close an eye on it.."
Which is like killing me all the time...
Could someone from XDA OnePlus team reach out to OnePlus official and represent our request???
Project Treble would be expensive and difficult to implement. Given what OnePlus did with the OP2, it's clear where this is going.
The OP3/3T hardware will be likely be completely abandoned by next Summer. One year, folks.
Of course, Google poorly designed Android from the start and created this problem. Hardware abstraction and support for official AOSP should have been baked in from the start--or (at least) implemented before Gingerbread.
I don't use the physical buttons on this device. There's not much to wear out. This next upgrade will be forced by software. I don't give a darn about benchmarks, games, or huge pdf's; hardware isn't compelling anymore. I am going to wait and see about x86 on ARM. Even with limited performance, it would be nice to carry one device and just plug into the hotel television hdmi. Also, the updates would flow for a solid five years--longer than I would use a new device (as it should be).
There will be some broken buggy ROMS floating around for a while after next summer, but those are for kids.

Incoherent, confused, and totally off the point, what after next year there is no Android update, would that kill the phone, I still have wildfire s, it's on ginger bread, it runs youtube, Facebook and what's app, this phone will be usable till it is not broken

I like turtles.
Is it possible for devs to port the kernel to 4.4+ once OP release sources for Oreo?
Well, given that OEM support for our device will end by mid next year, Project Treble implementation is not really worthwhile for our devices. It won't be useful to OnePlus for long (for the 3/T), and also it'll be quite expensive to be worked on.
But if OnePlus decides to pull an OPO, and grant us our wishes, we'd all be happy.
It has almost nothing to do with Oneplus, if Qualcomm update the reference msm8996 kernel to linux 4.4 then its trivial to port oneplus modifications over.
Qualcomm has practically zero motivation to do this, infact it works against their interests.

x86 or ARM? Jesus, that's some pretty old CPU architecture right there. Care to elaborate as to why you want it to go further?

OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T are all missing out on Project Treble, but will be updated to Android 8.1.
I'd rather have Treble.

And if OnePlus had release Project Treble but not Android 8.1, you would have also complained.
Stop complain about everything you don't have, and enjoy what you have: should I remind you that Android 8.0 should have been the last update for the OnePlus 3(T)? Plus, Project Treble targets all devices launched with Android 8.x, which is not the case for actual OnePlus phones.
Not only "OnePlus" doesn't give project treble,
Stop complaint about "Project Treble"
there is a petition going to support Project Treble for OnePlus devices
feel free to sign the petition and make a difference
We (the community) would like to ask Oneplus to support Project Treble in OOS

Project Treble is compulsory for devices launching with Oreo, but can be enabled when a device is updated (see OG Pixel/XL and Essential Phone), so OnePlus can do it if they want to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, just guessing here, but isn't the Google Pixel 1 getting treble? It has the same SOC, so getting the required kernel references shouldn't be a problem right?
EDIT: This is ofcourse only applicable to the 3T, so they'd have to split the OTA's from the OP3. Highly doubt that they'd do that though.

ARCore officially released for Nexus 5X & 6P!!

During Google I/O 2018, Google officially released ARCore 1.2. With this version, they added compatibility with a wider (but still limited) range of devices. Most importantly, our Nexus 5X is listed as compatible ! You can check the full list of compatible devices here.
Caveat: the new version of ARCore is still being rolling out worldwide (i.e. might not show up on Google Play Store yet), but if you are impatient (like me ) you can download the latest APK from Google's GitHub repository (direct link to APK). APKMirror is listing the latest APK as well, but I haven't tested it.
Installation went smoothly, I also followed Google's instruction (link) to package the HelloAR app. And.... IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY! No lag, tracking is on point, it can detect surfaces located at different heights (i.e. separate the floor from a table), and it also has vertical planes' support!
Since I couldn't find the HelloAR APK that used the latest SDK, I compiled it myself in 5 mins. But if you are lazy, and don't want to follow the Getting Started guide, You can get the APK I got straight out of Unity from here, no changes made. However, I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITIES IN CASE YOU BRICK YOUR OWN DEVICE. Since I never posted an APK before, you might think I could infect this APK with malware, and I understand that. If you don't want to trust me, go ahead and compile the app yourself: it's free, and will take you less than 10 mins :good:
Tell me what you think guys of this awesome news :highfive:
You can now download it from store! No more crazy hacking, yay!
What does this do? And would it be worth it to put on the 5x

This would basically add advanced augmented reality support to your device. For example, you can use an app to accurately measure the distance between two point using your phobe, or try Ikea furniture and see how they would look like in your room. It's excitirng because we believed Google wouldn't have added support for an "old" device such us Nexus 5X
Sounds good I'll add it

Thanks, it's awesome!!!
But how to have something different than the Android robot, must we create the samples with sdk or is there already some available models. Because on the show dated 8 months ago, there were playing with lot of objects.

You can create you own apps using the SDK, or you can try other apps such us ARuler, Ikea Place or Just a Line (these are the apps I tested, and work with this version of ARcore on Nexus 5X running Android Oreo 8.1).
Does this mean AR stickers will work too?

At Google IO
I don't know why Google only want to change thingd that are useful every version of Android. If some features are good, leave it. Example: Anyone wants to clear a notification in only one way? or, who wants to show the notch in the screenshots?
I don't understand Google..
Probably later after the OnePlus 7 gets it,summer sometime I would say
This is still in early beta state with a lot of bugs even on pixel devices:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE4QN6zkiLQ
After seeing more and more of OOS features OP already implemented and Google sells it as 'new feature' in Q with insane amount of bugs... I am an android fan, but this is the first version I am not excited about.

is there a list of devices which currently have SailfishOS ports available?

There needs to be a megathread in which devices are listed so that we can buy/ upgrade to better ones
Unofficial or official doesn't matters

XA2

That list is seriously outdated. For example, the instructions for my Nexus 5 are way too old. Now I am running Sailfish 3 + Android support and there is not listed.
Please refer also to together jolla and talk maemo

I can't post links. Look for SailfishOS 2.0 Nexus 5 CM12.1 Alpha1 | Sfdroid Pre-Alpha/Early Preview in google and look for edp17 posts in his signature. Go to the last pages of the topic.
