Nexus 6 Marshmallow root - Nexus 6 General

Hello all,
Just wanted to convey my days experience to the masses (without knowing exactly how already prevalent my experiences are in the forum).
Decided to flash Marshmallow today (sick of waiting for OTA), root, custom recovery, and be awesome.
After following the stickied all-in-one nexus 6 guide, and several hours of repeating various steps... I realized the method is out-of-date for Marshmallow.
Instead ended up following these instructions using the new beta of superuser. Worked nicely.
http://androiding.how/root-marshmallow-supersu-2-50-selinux-enforcing/
Happy rooting all!

Just so you are aware, the title of that link is very misleading. It is, in fact, root for devices that SHIP with an enforcing selinux policy (although technically 5.0 did as well...), not that his modifications actually *KEEP* it that way. At least not across the board.

Nougat already out? [XT1622]

Hi there,
is Android 7.0 or 7.1. already out via OTA for XT1622?
I didn't found an official image to download, only custom roms based on Nougat.
I'm on a custom ROM and I want to switch back to stock with root, because no custom ROM satisfies me at this moment.
When I tried to delete apps from Stock Marshmallow, it caused a boot loop even if I didn't touch any system relevant apps.
Thanks for all serious answers.

Short answer: OTA updates are not released according to the moderators and admins on Motorola's official forums.
<Short, slightly OT rant>
The ZIP file you may find on XDA (as well as several other places online) is apparently an unauthorized leak from the soak test Moto was conducting. It's caused a major headache for the unfortunate people maintaining those forums, going by the explosion of N-related queries and the resultant chaos.
That said, the update runs like a dream and it's quite likely that it will be the final version.
</rant>
My advice? Wait till the OTA arrives for stock users (should be sometime within this year if Moto's blog is to be believed) and then restore to stock and root.

Upgrading Nexus 10 running Lollipop

This is my first post, hope you can help me :- Hope its in the right place
I have just acquired a nice nexus 10 and managed to upgrade it to android to 5.1.1.
I am a complete novice when it comes to anything to do with rooting or custom ROMs and have always been scared to tackle anything like this, but it seems a pity that I am stuck with Lollipop when my phone is showing me the benefits of the latest nougat upgrade.
So do I chicken out again or do I ask for advice from the experts in this forum to hold my hand while i upgrade to nougat ?
I see a post by Trafalgar Square "how to install android 6.0.1 marshmallow" and although I don't understand much ( at the moment ) about what the developer is telling me to do I think that if i could have my hand held with a similar GUIDE for Nougat then I think i would have the guts to have a go. I see a posts by Sooti who is advocating using AOSP [7.1.1_r4] ( Again I am unsure what he is telling me to do ) and without an absolute basic guide I dare not consider that.
So what do your experts recommend that I do ? Can I be helped ? or must I allow the general fear of "bricking" my device to stop me again as it always did before .
Must I be so afraid of bricking it or could I be helped to recover from a bricked device should the worst happen ?
Download the Nexus Root Toolkit by wugfresh. It makes rooting and flashing custom ROMs as well as custom recovery a breeze! Plus if you brick it, it's most likely going to be a soft brick (bootloop) and the Nexus Root Toolkit will easily fix it. (Trust me, I've been there a few times.)
If you'd like Android Marshmallow, I might recommend OmniROM, unless Lineage has fixed the battery drain issue. (CyanogenMod 13 was terrible on battery.)
Lineage 14 can be found around here which is based on Android Nougat. It's supposedly really fast and battery efficient. Though it has some bugs, most notably the camera is disabled because the camera server keeps crashing and kills the battery otherwise from what I understand. So if you don't care about a camera, Nougat is available, otherwise stick with Marshmallow.
Since I use my Nexus 10 for Skyping on occasion, I'm stuck with Marshmallow. If Lineage 13 has fixed the battery drain issues, I'd definitely be interested to know.
Thank You Rochester. As I type this post I have followed your recommendations and managed to root the nexus and installed busybox. I will now follow the next section and decide whether to choose nougat
Sorry Agent orange I am new to forums

Aye, no problem! I'm glad I could help, and welcome to the forums!
AgentOrange96,
I Chose the OmniROM route like you. Wugfresh has done a marvellous job with his Toolkit, and I will be saying thanks to him too !!!
I am all up and running now and my experiences with your forum has removed my fear of Custom ROM flashing and Rooting, so much so that my nexus 6P will be rooted and customised next.
Many thanks to you ( and Brandon your Chief Admin ) for welcoming me as a member !!!

Trying to Update from 7.1.2 to 8.0

I'm running PureNexus. It's been a few years since I've used this phone. How do I update to 8.0 and then to 9.0? Thanks.
Dude, one post was enough. You've asked in 3 different places now about a phone that's 4 years old.
There are dozens of threads in the three different forum sections where you have repeatedly posted your question that answer it. Look around you
Here's the official Google Android factory image download page:
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Scroll all the way down to the 6P. The last link in the 6P section is the latest official firmware for the device, the December 2018 security patch for 8.1.0. Follow the instructions on that site to make sure you have ADB and fastboot installed correctly. Then extract the firmware zip to your ADB/fastboot directory and run the flash-all script.
To get 9.0, you will have to find a custom ROM. Since Google didn't release official Pie for the device, it's likely going to have some bugs or missing features. I haven't kept up with 6P development in a couple years so maybe they've worked out all the kinks, but your best bet for full functionality is going to be the 8.1.0 factory image I linked.
All of the instructions about how to do this can be found in many, many threads in these forums. You'll likely get more assistance in one of those threads than in one of the several you've made. Here's a good place to start:

HD 8 2018 version questions

Hey everyone and just started working with these tablets. I got 4 of them for fairly cheap and setting up for my kids to use for school. I'm trying to unlock them but have some questions to make sure that I do this correctly as not all of the tablets have the same version.
Essentially all I'm really wanting is to run Family Link on the devices to manage screen and app time as FreeTime is a joke. I used the toolbox and installed Google Play services but when trying to setup the child account on the device it fails on Device Management, so I just planned on going to Lineage to fix the issue.
Now my 4 Devices:
1 x 6.3.1.5 - First device I opened and let it update not thinking
2 x 6.3.1.2 - Kept these devices from updating after reading the forums
1x 6.3.0.0 - Kept this from updating as well and seems been sitting at best buy for awhile
6.3.0.0 - From what I read this one should just be rootable, The issue is that I'm only finding steps on the Hardware root/unlock and nothing about just rooting the older build. How do I just root this device to start the steps of this post to unlock the bootloader from @k4y0z after the root part.
6.3.1.2 - These I will need to do hardware mod on correct since it's not BELOW 6.3.1.2?
6.3.1.5 - Towards the end of the thread for unlocking/rooting I noticed people from .4 up seemed to be having issues but couldn't tell if they were doing hardware mod. It's still fine to do the bricking to unlock these devices as long as I do the hardware mod to CLK correct?
Just want to make sure I have all my information correct before I get flash happy and thanks to anyone who can help!

Yes, you are correct. The shorting method should work fine, even on 6.3.1.5, the issues people are having is brand new HD8's with new lot codes. Start here Post #2

Can confirm, shorting 6.3.1.5 worked for me with no problems.
I have my Fire HD 8 (2018). I'm staying on Fire OS 6.3.0.1 because I have blocked an OTA updates.

Did you ever figure out how to root 6.3.0.0?
UPDATE: After a bit of digging, I found the right path here: [UNLOCK][ROOT][TWRP][UNBRICK] Fire HD 8 2018 (karnak) amonet-3 | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
1. Extract the attached zip-file "amonet-karnak-v3.0.1.zip" and open a terminal in that directory.
NOTE: If you are already rooted, continue with the next step, otherwise get mtk-su by diplomatic from here and place (the unpacked binary) into amonet/bin folder
2. Enable ADB in Developer Settings

I should have read the outputs more carefully, because it does refer you here when it fails: Rapid Temporary Root for HD 8 & HD 10 | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
I thought there may have been another way to get root, but it seems that is the way to do it.
Thanks to Michajin.

Ordered OP8Pro, need helpful advice/guidelines

Hello XDA.
Ive spent a few hours now reading OP8P forums, and got some rough idea of what I'm getting my self into.
I bought a OP8P, its coming to me within next 10 days. I bought it brand new from T-Mobile in Croatia (Europe).
This is my first time owning a Oneplus, my current phone is Galaxy S7, before that i had an S5... On these two i got some experience with custom roms, rooting, flashing, twrp.... But i didnt do anything to my phone in the last 2 years, its been stagnant... and the knowledge i gained... well, if you don't use it, you lose it..
It always seemed that oneplus had great support in XDA community, but from all these threads I read in past few hours, i gathered some confusing conclusions.
What i expected when i made the purchase is that I would be able to have a stock up-to-date OxygenOS, with root (magisk), twrp, xposed, banking apps working, youtube vanced, photochrome camera...
But..... seems like i would have to go through a lot of trouble achieveing all of these things, deciding between OOS 10 vs 11, if they're even achievable with some of the knowledge i kept from my samsung days...
So here are a few questions i would like answers for...
1. When i get the phone and start it for the first time, am I going to be running OOS 10 until i manually upgrade?
2. Do you suggest I stay on OOS10 or upgrade to OOS11?
3. If i upgrade to OOS11, can I have any of the stuff i mentioned that i expected?
4. I saw some user saying if I decide to root, i should not be using modified/patched boot.img... Why is that? (btw i don't recall ever doing this back in day, would love some info about it...)
5. Is TWRP possible, whats the new META?
4. Is there anything else i should know before doing anything, also I wouldn't mind if you would explain all this to me like im five years old
Thanks in advance!
I'm a op8pro owner, and I have Magisk (22.0), and root without twrp (no recovery yet suported for android 11 on this device). You have to patch boot.img with Magisk. Not a big head ache.
Photocrom camera not working on 11 as before on android 10, and I tried two existing methods (it works, but no "X-ray" feature).
Since android 11 is in its stable release, new devices should come with it, but not sure.
All apps mentioned, Root and non Root are working just fine,
Thanks for replying.
Could you possibly link the guide which I should follow, and save me from something outdated, since I might not be rooting my OOS11 from inactive slot on OOS10
Thanks again!
