It seems the Android TV OS itself is missing this function. Maybe Xposed will get us this in the future, but I guess someone have to write a root app that add the whole function.

Ok, but it is always empty. At least for me.
If you have xposed, you can try xposed additions to remap controller buttons, im pretty sure there was a recent apps button option ........just quickly checked, yep

The problem is not the button. The recent list is always empty.
I figure its not what you want, but there's a running apps section of the SETTINGS/DEVICE/APPS. I just force stop any misbehaving apps from there.

Are you running stock or custom firmware?
Root/No root?
Xposed/no xposed?
stock rooted. The developer of halauncher stated that he can't implement such recent app list on Android tv because it is missing the code for it.

Haven't revisited the functionality since viewing this thread, but i do recall it being empty. But I do think I've had success in the quick Alt+Tab to flip back and forth between 2 most current apps
It's there

check this thread. I described how I was doing it before. Just got my RMA from Nvidia and I'm oem unlocking right now. Maybe those wacky people over at Gooogle took it out since the latest update. or just use OmniSwitch http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/help/recent-apps-t3150450
I wish they'd add in the app switcher/task manager as well. I don't like the way it appears there's something running in the background when I just hit the home button on the controller. Pandora appears to be running, for example, if you just hit the home button.

I have several apps which work fine on phone.
They also run on the tablet - BUT there is no menu icon, neither at the bottom next to the 3 standard ones, nor is there a menu icon in the upper right corner. There is no menu icon.
So I wonder if someone has a trick to send a "menu pressed" signal to the app so i can access the settings.
I know i know, tell them to update their apps, but some people have left and others will take years to fix that if ever -
So i thought perhaps there was some sort of shortcut or perhaps hack which could make a menu appear? You know like you can record keypresses on a PC and then play them back.
The soft menu button on the screen works fine for me, its the 4th icon (Series of lines, top one one is longest) - same goes for the menu button that's on the keyboard.

Yes..
It also works for me when they are there. But they are NOT THERE for the apps in question.
I think you got this backwards,
The menu button will only appear if the app has a settings menu.
Majority of the Honeycomb optimized apps do not have a menu button because there either isn't no menu for that app or they have moved the menu button to the action bar on the top right, which is the new standard
The settings button is primarily used for backwards compatibility with older apps. This is why developers are removing the menu buttonwhen they optimize their app.

As I also indicated, there is nothing "optimized" about these apps. (And these have many settings which are now unreachable)

Some apps on the phone will scale differently on a tab, if you used the menu button n your phone doesn't necessarily mean the tablet version will need a hard menu button.
As I said before, if there is no menu button the bottom nav bar, it would be on the top right corner of the action bar. Older phone apps should show up a menu button automatically anyway. The only reason if there isnt one is that the developer chose so because they added one on the action bar.

Can you give us an example?
I've yet to encounter a single application with this issue, so I'd like to take a look.

I see, in this case its the developers fault. For some reason he disabled the menu button which should be there by default.

The only option is to contact the dev and say the menu button is disabled.

+1 for this helpful comment. I am also looking for this as I have an Asus Eee Tranformer without the dock and cannot setup SetCPU app on my tab.
First of all you may have to have Play store installed, unless you can find any of the apps I mention in this thread from different sources. UPDATE: I found one of the apps that is need for this tutorial below at 1mobile.com link will be below. For more info on that search around the threads or visit my kindle fire HDX setup thread. It is targeted for the 7" model but you may be able to download these apps from 1mobile.com on the 8.9" or on a 7" that doesn't have play store.
So, first off, I installed a app from play store called recent apps quick button, which basically activates android's recent apps, I havent found another (legal) link to this besides playstore so please share if you do. then I installed a app from play store called Home2 shortcut, here's a link to Home2 shorcut on 1mobile, I haven't confirmed it works on default ROM so let me know your findings! this lets you assign the resent apps quick button to double tapping the home button so now when i double tap the home button it brings me to recent apps. It's really nice since kindles default Rom doesn't have a recent apps button! let me know what you think and if i works for people without a different launcher (I use ADW launcher). post any questions you have in this thread.
Nice work! Screenshots in recent apps does not seem to work though, but it's a start

Are you using a third party app to screenshot? or is there a button combination to do it that i don't know about.

No not that kind of screenshots... I mean the "previews" in the recent apps which is in reallity small screenshots of the apps while recent apps are running.
Does sliding the right side of the screen to the left show the same recent apps?

Possibly, but this program he is referring to also allows you to close recent apps by swiping them away. I like to pin this recent apps program to the "W8 taskbar" application which also has a task killer and shortcut to desktop. It makes accessing wifi toggle and reboot/ power off simple to do.
You can use switchr for recent apps. It works and looks good too. Lmt launcher is also working although it fcs. I think fc has to do with root, cause it actually needs root to work properly.

Yeah you can, it's in the options. You can have so you swipe through open apps, swipe down to kill the currently selected one and even swipe to the upper right corner to kill all.
Though that might be the pay version. I can't remember what's in which version off the top of my head.

Good morning all,

Not sure if this is launcher specific but I'm using Nova Prime and if you long press the menu button, then the original menu items pop up instead of recent apps. I never test with TW launcher. Discovered this later. But this way you don't have to remap with gravity box.

I'm not even sure what gravitybox even is. I tried to see if it was in the app storre. someone else in the thread recommended to do so....
FYI - the layout used in the S5 is the standard Android button layout and you will see fewer and fewer devices using a dedicated menu button, as there's no need for it in Android 4.x+

Gravity BOX is a module that is installed after you first use Xposed Installer. Google this or look it up in a search here on XDA.
Has anyone seen a way to swap the soft Nav buttons around yet via Xposed or any other route? Also anyway to add a quick menu on the bottom right like the Euphoria Rom has for the Nexus 6?
Gravitybox
Thank you! Now I just have to get the steps to install Xposed!

Is there a way to force auto hide or hide on demand??? And how do you remove them alrogether???
Never liked the idea of pie it seemed cumbersome. And half the time i accidentally hit the area to launch the pie..

I used to be indifferent about Pie, until I actually tried it. Now I can't live without it. It's so much easier to just place your finger along either side of the screen, or the top and bottom, and have your nav buttons come up. Especially on larger screens. I also like having a "clean" screen, so the more UI items I can hide, the better.

Gravity box has it, or you can grab the standalone app in Play Store.
I use an app from play store called "back button" and have a semi transparent back and notification drop button on the right side. I can't quite hit the back button comfortably. (see pic)

I had the same idea but did not work lol.
I am not sure what you are looking for exactly, but the list of apps on the original launcher is always reorganized to show the most recently used apps first. Or are you using a different launcher?
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Free mobile app
The best way of doing this is with LMT Launcher using it's Pie feature. Install it, and set up an item as Activity -> System UI -> com.android.systemui.recent.RecentsActivity. This gives you the recent apps, which is normally non-accessible on the shield. You can then add a few others as you see fit. I've added the power menu for example, which gives you the full power off, reboot and sleep options. Not found that anywhere else. All works best with a mouse, so you're best using an alternative launcher like HALauncher. But I suspect most people are doing that anyway given how restricted and awful Leanback is.
It can be downloaded here.
this is like the third or fourth thread about this
