Rooting a G2 with the LP firmware still possible. - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love my G2 so much because of the current ROM i am using and for what I use my phone for, I really don't need anything better. The problem is I fool with it so much I am concerned about it wearing out or breaking so I want to buy a backup G2 in case something happens. I imagine a new or used one would problably come with the latest firmware (5.01 or 5.1.1) and I am concerned about being able to root it. It's been so long since I rooted my phone (I think I used ioroot originally) and I haven't kept up with newer root methods so I don't know if they work with the latest firmware or has Verizon closed that door.
Is there still a way to root a G2 VS980 if it comes preinstalled with the latest lollipop updates from Verizon?
I searched through the forums but can't seem to find a definitive answer. Thanks for any advice...

Yes. Please search on LG One Click root. I have rooted my phone LG G2 F320k variant on 5.0.2

Thanks for that info. I saw the OneClick thread, but I was concerned about something they said on the first page about not working on 5.1.1. I didn't read through the whole thread so maybe that problem was resolved and the original post was never updated.

Hello everyone how to get started...I wil be as fast i as can to explain what i need.
I got LG G2 from berlin its internacional version D802 software ver. D80220d-EUR-XX android version 4.4.2
First of all wanna ask you should i root my phone and how and what should i do exatcly?
Then can i recive updates when my phone is rooted?its kinda dumb question but must ask
3rd if i root, can i restore my phone to be like he once was so he can recive updates ect.to be unrooted?
bump
0. don't bump only few hours from the OP, be patient a bit
1. it's up to you will you root or not (there are several tutorials on this subject, look for ioroot and autorec)
2. no, you can't recieve ota update if you're rooted and on custom recovery
3. yes, by flashing the original kdz file (there are also threads about this)
some searching instead of bumping will help you better cheers...
Do i need to do some backup so i can unroot to original form or...?
how hard is to search the forum?
unrooting or putting the device in its original state means that you have to put the original lg's kdz firmware file for your g2 variant, thus erasing everything from the device... but there is more stuff you have to do for the device to show it's fully unrooted...
i've never thinked of unrooting or wanting to do that...
if the updates is all you care about, then stay on stock firmware...
everywhen the new official update comes to our device, it takes developers less than a week to update their roms with new stuff from the update...
so i don't see a point to go back unless it's a waranty service reason

Steping up my G2!

Hello, i am looking for help to find out what i need to set up/have in order to flash a custom rom.
All i have is stock G2 with the latest update, phone model is LG-D802, android version is 4.4.2 and it not rooted.
I know first off i need to root the damn thing, but if any of you could point out some kind of post or guide with some kind of step by step info of how to root and after that how to continue with a flash of rom that would be awesome.
I`ve spend some time around the forum looking for such post but couldnt find one, and i am kinda scared to do this on my own since i`ve soft bricked a lot of my old devices.

easiest method, is to use the KDZ method (huge thread on it here) to get back to jelly bean, then download towleroot. one click root.

Ordered the Verizon S5 and it's coming with 4.4.2. What should I do and not do?

I ordered the AT&T unlocked S5 Active off Swappa from a seller that resells phones from corporate usage. It came with 4.4.2 and some modifications that lead me to believe the company does did not permit upgrades. That said, it was hell to get MTP working on it and it did not read any microSD cards (yes I troubleshot plenty). They offered to replace it and so I have a Verizon S5 (not Active) on the way instead, as I'm hoping for more official upgrade support (Marshmallow this month??).
Aaanyway, regarding root, updates, tips/tricks, etc, any suggestions?
I'm coming from the AT&T Moto X 2013 but have a good deal of experience with roots, mods, etc.

Honestly, it's a very easy procedure I was hunting and hunting when I got mine (about a month ago) so I've done plenty of research.
Mine had 4.4.2 on it as well. There is a downgrade process which is fairly simple and straightforward. It requires using Odin. I also followed a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/tut-root-tripping-knox-t2803951 which helped me a lot. I also read that towelroot isn't working, so I found one set of tools which has towelroot plus v2 and v3. v3 worked for me the second time. Try googling some stuff, there is tons of information, I'm looking for a good ROM or at least a pre-rooted updated stock ROM. I have version 0A8, which is the first OTA lollipop update. I'm looking for a ROM based off of lollipop there are tons based on kitkat kernel thou. CM is working on I think 12.1 So I may downgrade again because the downside to having Verizon lollipop installed, TWRP will no longer work. Stay with kitkat, install TWRP, and go from there, think I'm going back to kitkat to find a decent ROM, I like having recovery. Hope I helped a bit

Helped a ton I was thinking of sticking with the Active so I wouldn't need a case, but with all the development here, I'm glad I switched. And the Verizon model seems to be doing better than the AT&T one in terms of OTAs.
I was on a 4.4.4 for a long time as OTAs lock bootloaders.
I am happily rooted on 5.0 running a TW stock rooted ROM.
Beware of OTAs..... they can kill you. LP is Def better!

This is the first deviece i have owned with no development. The blu dash i used to have had more lol. Anyway can someone please tell me the best way to root and if i should upgrade to 5.1.1 or stay at 4.2.2? Thanks
I have been through all the threads but I want to make sure I do this the best way. Ther is a lot of uncertainty in most of the threads.
I recently purchased the same device however mine came with 5.1.1 already on it. I would say it functions really well and it is rootable on 5.1.1 for sure although its sorta a pain since you have to first use the kingroot then remove it and replace with supersu but as far as the kitkat version i cannot really say how it compares or if root can be obtained in the same fashion.
Are you rooted and if so would you share the links you used

Are there any simple clear tutorials on how to go from JB to Marshmallow?

Currently have TWRP 2.7.0.0 installed and a rooted stock 4.4.2 using the D800.
Does anyone know of any tutorials that can tell me what to do? I'm not new to all this but this G2 has got to be the most discombobulated phone to tinker with that I've come across.
I'm reading that the go to MM I first have to flash KK but then I read that I need to upgrade my TWRP or something to flash KK then there's all this about different bootloaders and etc etc....
I'm just lost. Everything I can find is all from like 2-3 years ago so I don't know what's changed since then, etc.
*sigh*
Can anyone help me? Thanks!

I can help i have same phone , but i see other question in other thread . whats the situation.? right now of the phone. and ill do my best to explain the process never been in jb but i think its the same..
Which specific Marshmallow you're asking about? There is no official LG G2 Marshmallow, but there are several AOSP ROMs. Usually, the process is explained on the ROM developer site or here on this forum in the ROM's announcement.
