I have the Nexus 5x.. Any Questions? - Nexus 5X General

I'm a long time xda member and i do reviews on my small time Youtube channel Phone Tech At Work. Whenever i get early devices, I like coming here and sharing my knowledge with the device for you guys. I'm a fan of the game just like you.
I've had the 5x since Friday as a review unit from Google. Anyone have any questions. I have the 32gb model, and I've been using the Project Fi network as a complimentary trial. I've been on the 6p forum answering already. It's time for some 5x questions.

Is the weight difference from the 6p that much noticeable? Are the specs that much noticeable to opt for the heavier 6P? Oh yea how is that Ied light? Bright or what?

The 6p is definitely heavier then the 5x.You can feel the difference. They built the led in the middle of the bottom speaker of the 5x. Much brighter LED then the 6p.
Honestly after my testing, i think the fingerprint scanner on the 5x is quicker and the picture quality is about the same to me. Video is a big difference. Very shaky on the 5x. I have some 4k videos on my YouTube channel if you curious.

If you had the Nexus 5, this nothing like it except for the design of course.

Can you post a link to your channel?

I prefer the Nexus 6p just because of the overall package you get. If they would of put the aluminum casing on the 5x, I would of chose the 5x. I'm using the 6p as a daily driver at the moment and I'm getting 5 hours of screen on time. I will switch tomorrow just to test it out as well .

I'm doing a ongoing test with the 6p right now, tomorrow I will put the 5x to the test . But the 6p is killing it right now 5 hours plus Screen On Time 15% left

Here's a good way to test Doze. Put the 5X, 6P and a Nexus 6 with Lollipop on wireless chargers when you're not using the phones. See which phone's battery lasts longest.

Is the edge of the screen on the 5x sharp like the 2013 nexus 5 or rounded off/smooth?
If you place the 5x flat on a table and try to text or use it does it wobble a lot due to the camera bump?

Can you tether freely without editing the build.prop file? I'm on Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan and I'm hoping to tether out of the box.

I'm hoping this as well.
I use Three in the UK, and am on an unlimited data plan.
When Android 5.0 came out for the Nexus 5 I ran into issues where they detected the device was tethering and sent a text through and removed my access.
I have since broken my Nexus 5, and have a replacement phone, which I was able to find a workaround by removing the word "dun" from the Access Point "APN type".. I didn't expect it to work - but it did!
I don't think there is a reliable way to test this as carriers are different (and even the plans within each carrier can differ and require different settings).

How's the battery after 1 day of usage? If possible, with the brightness set at 20-30% max.

One of my annoyances on several phones is the amount of time to get the camera to focus and snap a photo in various lighting conditions. Is the 5x camera any better? Just wondering if you've seen issues yet with it lagging when focusing and response time to the shutter button.

I've got a question. In developer options, active services (or similar, the 5th menu entry) how much system ram usage does it show?

Nexus 6p, nexus 5x OR the moto x style(pure)

Ok guys which one would you reccomend? I know the opinions here are going to be a bit biased towards the 6p but I'm posting here as that's the one I'm currently leaning towards. As you guys probably have the 6p already it would be good to know your thoughts on what you think would be the better device and what things let the 6p down. Thanks.
Also I have small hands but tend to use all my phone 2 handed anyway so not sure it matters about size?
P.s. I'm coming from a galaxy s6

Returned my pure in a week, loud speakers but the quality was not great, battery life was horrible, great screen, great moto features, average camera, and has A LOT of trouble with third party quick charge 2.0 accessories (main reason for returning this POS, my quick cj charge 2.0 battery packs wouldn't even charge this thing) I even experienced lag once or twice but it was very rares. 5x, well I had this within the same month and the phone just feels cheap and nothing stood out from it. I paid $480 for a 32gb and it was only about $70 more I could get a 32gb 6p which had a much much better build quality... I HAD to return it to get a 6P
Do you have the 6p now? What do you think? I'm a bit worried about battery and im very slightly worried about bending that I've heard of although this isn't a deal breaker for me as I tend to take care of my phones (unlike the misses who just got the nexus 5x as she broke her galaxy S6 lol)
If I do decide to take the plunge and get the 6p this will be my 4th phone in a year, I think I have an addiction!

Honestly I wouldn't be too concerned about build quality issues. My phone feels solid, and more so with the microfiber case. Honestly I was surprised how solid the case itself feels on the phone, considering it is simply a tpu case. My only gripe is lack of band 12....which I hope is officially supported soon.

I was looking at that case on the Google store, it looks nice but a bit pricey, I think I would go with spigen or something similar.

It is a bit pricy, but I went with it because of concerns with proper sizing/cutouts from the initial third party batches.
I have only had the phone 2 days(received Monday night), but I got a little over 5 hours sot yesterday, with some music in between.

5 hours isn't bad. Was that on WiFi or LTE? If I could get 5 hours SoT I would be super happy as that's roughly what I get on my galaxy s6

Should be noted that I do not use social apps, including fb and messenger. That could affect your own battery life.

LTE. I have an unlimited plan so I usually run with WiFi off.
Well I went on a mad hunt today for 4 hours around Birmingham england carphone warehouse stores being told by each store "we don't have it but this one does" the store before last told me the nexus 6p wasn't out till tomorrow so I went back to the first store I visited and was told they had just had a delivery and finally got it! After 4 bloody hours! Anyway so far I'm liking it but it is a rather tall slab lol
I have all these devices and prefer the 6p. The moto x is a great device, fits better in the hand (if you do not use a case), smaller bezels and so on. But all around the 6P is the better device. And it is beautiful. 5X is good but the screen doesn't match.

Is the OP2 worth getting?

i have a iphone. i switched to the dark side. but im not really happy the price i have to pay for outdated features. i was wondering if the oneplus 2 overheats over normal use and is it worth getting?
There is a thread like that in general section. Check it out.

- it tooks 4months for samsung to get MM to his flagship
- battery life is lame
- worst ram menagment phone ever ,, cant handle more than 3/4 tasks
- for my opinion selfie cam is so fake with that "beauty" filter
- reception in LTE / 4g was so bad (max 3h sot with mobile data)
- they didnt post kernel source so it lacks in developing
- BLOATWARE all around ... more than 300 apps+ services
- a lot useless stuff, flip to mute , proximity to ear call , IM NORMAL PERSON I CAN DO IT BY MYSLEF, im not handicapped
- 2560 x 1440 was so bad move for a 5.1 inch display . in 1080p more battery life , less pixel to show , more cpu power , more gpu power etc
thigs ive liked :
_ the build was so good
- it was amazing fast phone (even with touchwiz , imagine what can he do in cm13 , but they never gona have stable cm13)
- fast charging , 1h22min 100%

If I'm not looking to tweak the phone, just want something to get away from iOS, is this still a solid choice? I see lots of issues, but it's hard to discern what is causing what.

OnePlus 2 is perfect from my point of you. But not the software. The hardware of the device is beast. Software by OnePlus is no match to if. If you want to buy OnePlus Two you should tweak to get most out the phone. So it's in your hands. Perfect hardware, OK stock software. Of course the Device heats up a bit. If tweaked its the best phone in its range. If you don't want to tweak, you can use stock but wait till marshmallow.

Oneplus 2 and nexus 6p are both good phones for their price range. If you have a bigger budget, i would get a 6p because its better in terms of software updates (they have marshmallow already). For me i haven't experienced many bugs with oneplus 2, others in the forum have had minor bugs. Battery life is not bad, i get around 6-7 hr screen on time with YouTube only with a bit of internet.

I really like the 6P and OP2, but both seem to have some issues. Some bigger than others. And I know no phone is perfect. I can spend up to what a 64gb 6P would cost me, but saving money is never a bad thing. My 6s Plus has no issues, but the OS is so stale and I'm going nuts without the simplest of customization.

does it still worth it?

With all those new phone's came out lately.
I'm confused, S7 looks like a beast, and he is far more beautiful than the 6P.
Although he is also much more expensive and not to mention the crappy touchwiz.
Same thing with Note 5.
The one that caught me is the HTC 10.
But also much more expensive.
Anoter area that I'm curious about is the brightness level, how's the 6P handle?
Thanks!

Really bad battery life? My G4 SOT is around 2-2.5h depends on usage (gaming or not)
But this isn't bothering me because i have another battery with me.
But this isn't the case with the 6P that's why it's important for me.
Ya i thought the brightness isn't special from all what i heard, but i guess it is better that the G4, right?

If you're not concerned of losing the stock android interface and monthly updates, go for either of them. Just be careful, apparently the maximum brightness on the HTC is low too.
Nexus 6P is a good device but brightness is quite subpar* ; same goes with battery life, considering the beefy battery it has got!
* all stock

I'm not sure why anyone is complaining about battery life on this device, it performs really well for me. It mostly comes down to individual setup anyway, it's like installing a turbo on your car and then complaining that the car has terrible fuel efficiency.
As for whether it's still worth it, probably not. I certainly wouldn't be opting for Samsung though, and the HTC is nice but you'll be waiting several months for any updates. The next Nexus is only a few months away probably, I'd be waiting for that.
no, definitely go with the HTC 10. I got my 6p and damn the mic, speaks, and call quality is terrible !!!

The only device i would give up pure android for is HTC. Sense is my second favorite if not par with stock android.
After been with HTC One M8 for a year and a half, than switching for LG G4.
I know how good HTC devices is, only problem is that here in ny country HTC ain't popular, most people's buy iPhone or Samsung and lately LG. Which cost me when i sold my M8, after bought it for 700$ and sold for only 250$ in new condition.
I guess the brightness on the Nexus 6P is higher than HTC 10 and my LG G4.

What i like about Samsung devices
(S7 edge and note 5)
Is the amazing display and brightness.
All other thing's including software is awful, at least for me.
S7 edge is a really beauty device, but way too expensive.
If I'll buy the HTC 10 i could live with the several month's update because it has sense which is the closets one to pure android. But also there, too expensive..
What do you mean by few month's away?
I guess also when it'll come out it'll be expensive, and till than my G4 will loss another 200$.
I'll wait for more answers, What bothering me mostly on the Nexus 6P is SD810, as G4 has SD808 which is not that different..

You won't be waiting "several months" for any updates. The software on the 10 is similar to the A9 and is actually closer to stock than the A9 which got updates roughly 15 days after Nexus devices. Definitely not several months.

I am coming from the M9. The 6P blows it away in every category you mentioned. I can't even get cell reception in my basement on the M9 and the 6P has 2-3 bars. Since nobody really has the 10 other than reviewers you can't really definitely make that statement.
I will say I already miss Sense somewhat. I like having screenshot in the drop down quick settings. Where is the battery percentage? I have the system tuner version but it is useless once you get into the 50-60's percentage. Why no option to restart instead of just turning off? Gmail is terrible for exchange. I tried it again in hopes that the update this week would address some problems but it sucks. The camera app on the 10 will be much better than the 6P. HTC Mail is way better and I can't get hacked versions of HTC apps to work that is on XDA. HTC does some really good things to compliment Android without being overbearing like Touchwiz which keeps it running smooth years later, unlike Samsung. They are subtle but when you don't have them you start to notice.
That said, I was not about to pay $300 more for the 10. If it was the same price. I would have bought it. No phone is worth $1,000.

Coming from the M9 it is way better. I guess it all depends on your frame of reference and if you had a S6 S7 Samsung screen before. I can also see what people talk about with this display vs a LCD one on HTC. The images just are more vivid and punchy. If you like the flat look you can change that on the 6P as well. I like the saturation though for a change. The 10's screen is better than the M8 and M9 but not as good as the 6P. At least not $300 better. That's for sure.

The display used in nexus 6p is made by Samsung... I don't think brightness should be an issue... Also you could use ultra brightness mode in elementalx kernel... Regarding camera it's good.... Haven't used g4 so can't exactly compare them... Pm me your email. I will send you photos captured by 6p..
Note: sd810 doesn't support 10bit hevc hardware decoding whereas s7 exynos supports it... So sd820 may support it too... Shouldn't bother you if you don't watch 10bit videos on phone.
Samsung = Knox.

So if I were to buy a phone today, unless I could unlock the bootloader, the device is not on my shopping list.
So for me on Verizon, Nexus or HTC. With HTC you can at least usually pay someone for S-Off.
I have an M9 from day one last year. Really liked it but got the 6P last November because of the improved camera. Also because the monthly updates it receives.

Really on the fence atm as well.. The 32gb is about $650 CAD and the 64gb is about $700 CAD on Newegg.. Ive been running through reviews and comparison videos all week and I am so close to purchasing it, but the price still kind of hurts. It has everything I need, but battery life seems to vary among everyone. The camera also seems to have some issues and lag time between users. The most recent update was suppose to fix it, but some users are still experiencing slow-downs. The phone is almost 7 months old, but since its by Google, updates will always be rolling out.
Love stock android as I had the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 5, but moved away to the Asus Zenfone 2, which is already experiencing slow downs and my camera is all wonky. I would never purchase a phone over $600, but the Nexus 6P is looking amazing. Right now, I am just looking for a way to justify buying it

Got a North American H915 V20, ask me anything

Hi all,
I am lucky enough to get a hold of a North American V20, H915 (Unlocked from local Carrier) locally through connections after seeing one on sale on ebay.
I also have a G5 as my daily driver prior to this and thought that it was the most underrated phone in 2016 (other than build quality). I have had every single mainstream phones out there since 2007, including the recently returned exploding Note 7
Ask if anything that you might have about it, and I will try my best to answer.
Cheers.

How's the battery life? I had a note 7 as well and now I'm checking this one out. I think I read it's a 3200m. I'm using a oneplus 3 and I'm honestly liking it. Haha

The first day was stellar, had a full charge when I start the day and ended with 46% by the end of the day. It runs extremely cool and seem to manage the battery much better than the Note 7 and G5. The G5 does well most of the time but it's inconsistent, it could be due to the better Doze as well.
I will monitor it over the next few days and report back.
How's the camera? It seems from media they use the dual lenses in a less effective manner than the iPhone. The wide angle looks a bit weird. Can you give some overall impressions of video and stills?

I too would like to know about the camera, as reviews have only been for the preproduction units. If you could, possibly upload a few of them. Thanks.

Glad to hear that. I had the G5. It was horrible. Main reason I got rid of it. I liked the camera and features though.

OK Google detection while screen is off. Coming from a note 7, where OK Google didn't work while screen was off unless plugged in or charging wirelessly.?

So. This.
How is the build quality? Sturdy? Slippery to hold? Awkwardly large?
How's the fluidity of the software? Is Nougat pretty awesome? LGs skin pretty minimal?
How's the fingerprint scanner? Fast? Accurate? Positioned well?
How slow is the camera in terms of opening?

Of the reasons I'm interested in buying the V20, the audio quality and loudness is tops. Appreciate if you can give some feedback on your experience so far, thanks!
Speaker power compared with iphone 7 plus if you can?
Hurry back! How's the Speaker sound, Camera quality, UI Performance, etc.?
How does the v20 sound with wireless headphones vs wired headphones (same, better, worse)? Also how is overall sound vs note 7?
Please tell us the screen on time you get after you cycle through the battery a few times.

Nexus 6P to Essential PH-1....is the camera better on the PH-1?

Hello XDA (it's been awhile)
While I've been INCREDIBLY happy with my rooted Nexus 6P, it's battery capacity has faded (61% degradation) and with the PH-1 now going for $280 I find my track pad hovering above the "add to cart" on amazon but I haven't yet....partially because I want to hold out until a Pixel 3XL
Using 'Camer NX' has given me a modded version of the Google camera and has taken stunning pictures, the only fear I have is that the camera in the PH-1 is a step below what I'm currently using can anyone put my fears to ease about that?
Thanks in advance!

Hold out for the pixel 3. The camera on ph1 is average. And most of us use the Gmod cam for better pictures.

The phone is a great phone and right now you can get the gray on Amazon for under $300. It's a no brain upgrade the 6P.

I'm also considering grabbing the PH-1 now...and seeing what the Pixel 3 looks like around the holidays....and then gifting the PH-1

That's the temptation that's sitting before me.....I just don't want to take too much of a step back in camera quality
Just order the ph-1 from my aging nexus 6(replaced the stock battery a few mo this ago... Cant wait for it to arrive Tuesday at 280 usd its a no Brainerd.

I just ordered an Essential Phone today ($223 on Amazon.com!!) and am coming from a 6P right now as well (early shutdown at 15-20%). I'm not looking forward to a degradation in camera quality, but the 6P is unbearably slow after 2 years, so it's time for an upgrade.
The harder decision seems to be finding a decent case/screen protector.

I've never used a 6P so I can't speak to a comparison but: using GCam (I'm currently running Toylan's, there's a thread with settings) this camera has achieved good enough status. The stock cam in mono is good too. Are there better? Yes of course, but the price difference outweighs camera improvements IMO.
Depends what you're doing and what you expect.
I find the PH1 stock app on par with the 6P (and even the PXL except in poor conditions). The app is significantly improved, you can always use a gcam port, and it's a great phone that rivals the PXL2 (I've had all of these phones and a number of others in the same lifespan as your 6P)

Rivals the pixel 2 in photo quality?? LOL I really hope that isn't what you mean.
That is about the most bs I've ever heard.
Nope, it's a great phone that rivals the PXL2.

Aside from the touchscreen sensitivity, jitter, reception and camera, I would agree. Build quality wise it is way better imo. I moved to a pixel 2 recently, and aside from those things (and amoled screen, I did miss these blacks), I would say it was on par otherwise. It is a good phone, and for the price, a real steal.
It had a few showstoppers for me and getting a pixel 2 for free sealed the deal, otherwise I would have kept it for a long time. I still had to debate which to keep honestly.
Seen many youtube videos saying the cam is much improved in 9.0...also called amazon and they match the difference of 56 dollars on my ph-1 [emoji123]... The camera isn't the reason I'm getting the phone... Community support and 3 years of software updates from the company... It's the only other device besides the pixel line to be running 9.0 on day 1. The ph-one is now 335 on amazon [emoji16].
