Gathering team to port 6.0 AOSP to the S5 - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I currently found an AOSP 6.0 Marshmallow port for the OnePlus One. I'm a slight new to this but im ready and willing to learn how to do all of this from source. The OnePlus One has the same chipset, cpu, and gpu so it shouldnt be impossible to get this up and running. Anyone interested in contributing to the cause pm me or post on this thread .

Once I am interested in such things , but later I found it is too hard and lack of info :<

Well its all plain experience and trying and trying over and over till it works. Its quite a lot of work its possible just to wait for everything to happen from the cm team but thats really gonna take a while and im sure with enough knowledge and enough hard workers its possible to pull it off. Especially since a device with near the same hardware has marshmallow ported

Well he was probably trying to kang port it. You need to build it from the source. Port the kernel from source and the same with the source for the rom itself. Its not easy but it can be done. I may give it a go myself even if no one can help or wants to.

ubuntu

So, I have decided to compile and get ubuntu running on our devices. I have the TMO Note 4.
If anyone has a donor device, or can give me some pointers I want to get all this running nicely.
No goal is unobtainable.
I will like to see this if we can get dual boot [emoji14]
and what about miui 6? there is recently released miui 6 patchrom. Do you know miui? I am asking you this because we are two and we want to port it but we have weak knowledge. Maybe you can help us
and this is how miui 6 look like
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=34895&extra=page=1&page=1&mobile=no
and there are some of thousands official themes for miui
http://en.miui.com/thread-112322-1-1.html
First of all i don`t think it`s nice of you to come in here and state there's no real custom roms out there for the Note 4, there's a lot of movement in the threads and developers work their butt off providing the latest and the best experience for the device. That said, let`s say i`m willing to give you a N910F donor device for development purpose, what have you got to show for it? Being a newbie ( at least your XDA account shows it ) there doesn`t seem much that shows anything worth to mention.
You sure this ain`t a cheap way of getting yourself a Note 4?

if you already have a TMO n4, why would you need a donor device?
and if dual boot works it's even easier to try it all
but porting Ubuntu does sound like a fun project, maybe you can use cm12 stuff to speed up the porting :fingers-crossed:
and i would love to help but i have no idea about porting and i'm already busy with n4 and s6 edge development
good luck though! :good:
My Apologies

My apologies, you are correct about custom roms. What I meant is we don't have MIUI, Firefox, etc. Yeah skinned versions of Android, yet some people like them.
I want to do something no one else has done, and bring something to the table.

That's all I have now is my ubuntu laptop.
What I found out is ubuntu touch is based on cm10.1.
They don't have 3g/4g/let working for some systems.
I am reading about how to compile. Hensel why I need a donor device, just in case I super brick. Bricking out my only phine would suck.
I haven't figured out how to pm, so if anyone can talk to me like via Skype, and help me learn. PLEASE!

Why would I donate you a Note 4 to brick it? lol.
Sounds like a fun project according to me. Did not heard ubuntu ported since note 2.
But have not enough money to give away a note 4.
NOTE 4 running Ubuntu/Windows10
Ladies and Gentleman,
John here, I have spent at least 5 days trying to port windows 10 to the Note 4, (turns out its not possible) windows 10 requires secure boot and bypassing this is a pain in the ass, so I've given up.... it is 5/12/2017 and I've arrived very late to this thread but I got my note 4 out of the drawer and decided to turn it into a portable Linux pc, I spent 4 weeks porting Ubuntu to the note 2 in 2015 and dropped the project because there was many issues getting all the drivers to work but so far porting Ubuntu to the note 4 is working well but it needs quite a bit of glitches to be fixed, im trying to get the 4G gsm module to work and the sound but soon this will be working great and I will share my finished product.

I also have a N910T and am willing/would love to be a part of this and help get Ubuntu working on my Note 4. I will help in any way I can.. I have been searching for a port of Ubuntu for some time now so I was VERY excited when I saw your OP. I know this might sound odd but the main reason I wanted to run Ubuntu was for native development. In the same situation as @sawdoctor I have also been trying for about a year to compile a kernel but for some reason I just can't figure it out ha. I don't have my computer with me during the day but I have my phone and plenty of time so I was looking for a way to compile the kernel source with my device. And although I obviously don't know that much about development, I figured what better way to start that running Ubuntu. It's crazy to me i couldn't find one single guide or post about how to build a kernel with the phone you want to run it on. Seems like it should be easy ha. I have have tried termux, gnu-root, cc-tools, kbox3,........you name it and I have a TB of it ha. So all rambling aside, just let me know what or if you need anything

Not at all, Ubuntu isn't sizing things properly and it's almost impossible to use the touchscreen to click buttons, can only be used with a mouse, just getting otg to work was a pain to plug in a mouse, there's some options In Ubuntu for resizing but they don't help that much.

Hmm. Well maybe resizing everything could be an acceptable approach but if windows and android have different "skins" maybe we could make a custom gnome launcher that works better with the small screen, but as far as the drivers and the kernel, is it stable, and what model have you compiled it for?

Hey bro. Any progress? i just ran across a kde plasma active installer for nexus 7 that uses multirom to flash linux to ext sd. Would it maybe be possible to adapt the script to our device being that we have EFIDroid and Multisystem?
I've been working on porting Halium (needs for Ubuntu touch now) to my device, I haven't gotten the graphics to work yet but with the work I've got done so far we could get the graphics working then get other OSes that support Halium working (I.e. plasma os, sailfish, and possibly even post market os) if your still trying to get this working let me know and I'll contribute what I can to help, I still DD my n910p cause I like the form factor of my note 4, hate the glitchy issues that sprint forced into its software though. I have gotten Ubuntu to boot to a headless system setup, but that's not useful for what my end game is, its just a step in the right direction.

New roms? Why not?

So our phone, is really good, we got cm 11 and cm 12 running, so why don't we have the more special roms? Like flyme os (http://www.flyme.cn/en/) or ubuntu touch? Sailfish os. Most of these, roms have their source released, so for people to pick it up, shouldn't be hard right?
Sailfish os - https://sailfishos.org/develop/hadk/
Ubuntu touch - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Building
Flyme os - Well it's builded for the nexus 5, but aren't we able to port it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/official-flyme-nexus5-kk-4-4-flyme-3-8r-t2875908
And admins, please do not movie this topic, as it won't get as much focus.
bump!
I'd be interested too, what comes to mind is hardware limitations and lack of sources from LG to build on? I have for a couple of months and I still haven't wrapped my head in all the info, but I think we have some limitations as I mentioned above. Someone who's more informed can correct me tho

The issue is that LG does not release the source code for LG G3, whereas the nexus 5 even though it is manufactured by LG, people have the sources for it. So developing all these different roms is not as easy as you think, we have only just got MIUI rom for this device and it is not even official. its not a SD810 btw.

Im not being mean at all, you're failing to understand that its not easy to just port roms, and its not even about porting roms, there has to be enough demand for it, devs need to have the device and not all devs do because they move to other devices, if it was an easy process then there would be loads of other roms, but the majority of roms are now Cyanogen and aosp based because thats the easiest way to as they have the sources for that.

I never ported a rom, but i saw some guide on porting a rom, where you would take something from the rom you want to port, and some from the base. So i thought it was like that! I'm so sorry, if i said anything mean to you Hope you have a great day :highfive:
Porting isn't the way you would want to work. For the best results you would need all sources and complete documentation of the hardware to be able to build a rom for a device from scratch.

There is no "simple" ROM.
You can't just put another phone's ROM to G3, it doesn't work like that.
In PC world, you can install Linuxes and Windows operating systems mostly as you want, but in mobile, things are different.
So if there is no port for the custom ROMs then why not features like Download Booster from the Galaxy S5, this is a possibility maybe it is hard to do but give it a chance, just an idea that I like

As Robin2 put it ealier, you would need sources that aren't available.
The Rom porting procedures have been becoming more and more complex with time. Elements like drivers, framework, and so forth are much more complex comparing with Gingerbread. A rom by then used to be 300mb (stock), nowadays we got 1gb roms, much more "little things", overal, it's a lot harder and more complex. You can easily compare, there used to be more ports with gingerbread and ICS than with KK and L. It's a lot of work required to make things happen, even with the same chipset, there's still a lot left to do, specially when we're talking about lack of sources available to make a porting happen and much more complete.
Also, when we're talking about porting a stock rom from HTC to LG, gets worse. manunfactures put a lot of customization (not only GUI) into their firmwares, much more proprietary stuff, much more complexity comparing with a "simple" CM12. It's porting 200mb comparing with 1gb of custom elements. You get the picture. Unfortunatly it's harder than ever and so time consuming and not always with good results. Sources are literally a requirement these days and we don't have them (or don't have them all).

CM port

Hi everyone,
I have juste created a thread asking for the official port of CM on this device (I can't post the link because I'm new....), section device requests.
Be free to comment the post (even a +1) , I am sure you can find the link we google, and we have to prey that they will take a look at it
Kisses
Won't happen until Alcatel releases the source code and given that the phone was just released to canada as recently as June 30th you can expect to wait a couple of months for that.
Just want I want a bug filled rom that gets rid of one problem and another pops up. I just love when we all use cm and the Bluetooth crashes all the time, disconnects, and overall bearly works. I love when the wifi disconnects and you have to restart the phone just to get it to work.
Sorry I'll stick to the stock rom where everything works perfectly fine.
Wont be any cm roms until we get twrp first. Im shocked more devs dont own this device.

It hasn't even been out 2 months yet. It's an off name most are not familiar with and alcatel's first true shot at an enterprise/flagship level device. It has threads on slickdeals.net advertising it's low price...it will eventually get support by either the source being released or a new exploit being found that can be used to provide temp or perm root...once someone has root they can pull the recovery and boot partitions and development can begin.
It's unrealistic to expect developer's to be jumping all over this phone so soon. I'd never even heard of it till I was looking to buy a zen phone 2 and found so many articles comparing it to the idol 3.

yeah id miss it too but meh lol but theres the dolby atmos app that has been ported from a lenovo ROM that should work with our speakers and also there can be a way to port the colorOS camera app from oppo phones those can take up to 50mp shots because they use sony sensors even on the one plus one has been achieved an yet it has the same sony sensor also hopefully xposed framework could work on us because of the adaway for youtube ^^
Well if someone's working on a CM port I'd be interested in helping to test it.
Thatd be nice id help too for testing purposes im a very heavy user and this phone has been keeping up with me lately
I'll throw my vote in for a cm port. as well as another tester if needed. Dont have tons of experience, but I'll be happy to help where I can.
well im pretty sure theres going to be a bounty thread for it or any other rom ^^

Can you use the computer chip from a v8 chevy in a v8 ford? The software has to match to the hardware. How is the software going to control the screen when they have different digitizers? Different sound cards. Just as with your pc the drivers have to match the hardware.

One of the CM maintainers, contacted me here on a PM today and requested files from the device. The work on the CM port will be started probably the next week. I will not disclose his ID for now in order to save him from possible questions on PMs. Probably CyanogenMod soon will be available for the Idol ... I just spread the news.
Cool, looking forward to it!

Thanks for the update! It's been quiet for a little bit regarding a CM port. Good to see it's still WIP.
While I look forward to having trees to build with, I find it kinda funny that they asked for files when a couple of them have the device already. Unless the files are from a different version?

MIUI on Marshmallow

Hey folks, I have a question... Is it hard to port MIUI to Marshmallow for our phone? I love the MIUI Interface, but I wanna move on from Kitkat, and on Lollipop the phone overheats. Besides, all the 4 core are always on and I haven't found any solution for that yet. I'm not a developper but I'm willing to learn if there's a way, which doesn't require much knowledge in development. I appreciate any help. If it's not possible, I'd appreciate if at least someone could help me with making a kernel that boots on MIUI based on Lollipop, which can turn off the cores that are not being used, automatically...
As MiUI is closed source there is NO chance you can contribute directly to source.
You can lend a hand by joining the beta team and giving feedback on what progress they are making towards update.
BTW,kernel governors are used to control the behavior of processors.

Hey folks, I have a question... Is it hard to port MIUI to Marshmallow for our phone? I love the MIUI Interface, but I wanna move on from Kitkat, and on Lollipop the phone overheats. Even if I were to develop a kernel for 4.4 which has official kernel sources released already?

I have 2gb. I dont think MIUI is too heavy. The issue for me is only battery. Im happy with the performance this phone gets on any ROM in terms of speed. But battery... thats another story

Are there any custom ROMs that work ok on this device ?

Hi,
I plan to buy this device but I would firstly like to know that there are roms that I can rely on...
Thank you !
I wanted to get this device too and searched a lots about it... No custom rom...so that made me to choose the Honor 8
Anybody ?
That phone is still young, and it's not a Google phone nor a very famous phone as are Samsung phones. So it will take time to get CM on it, as it took time to get CM on Zenfone 2 (and the Zenfone 2 is Intel based, not Qualcom, wich was a big issue !).
Asus is really not capable to make a good Android based system, and it's quiet annoying to use it. But be patient, I'm pretty sure CM and others will come as soon as possible

This appears to be the main hub for info in this topic, and I am interested as well, so if anyone finds a good ROM for this phone, please post about it here
