[Q] Extract contacts from broken phone ? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi - my friend has a non-rooted S5 with a broken screen
Is there any way (e.g. ADB), that I can retrieve his Contacts that were stored in the Phone (not the Sim Card) ?
-Tom

Aren't they saved to his Gmail contacts at gmail.com ?
You could try KIES3 to back it up too

Unfortunately, he's not a techie, and the shop didn't set him up with gmail etc.
- but thanks for the Kies tip, I'll try it when he brings the phone around
-Tom

You have to log into a Google account for things like the play store to work, so chances are he will have a gmail account, Android phones are very limited and throw up all sorts of nag screens if you don't log into a Google (Gmail) account

Over there.
Seriously what do you mean though? They back up to your google account. Do you want to back it up else where also? You can export all your contacts right from Gmail.
If your contacts are google contacts they automatically sync. If they aren't I believe there are some apps in the market that will change your contacts to google contacts.
When you setup a contact in you phone all you have to do is make sure that you have Google Contact selected instead of hone:
Gmail ~= BIS only better.
Do you have a Google account? You need to sign in on your phone and all your Google contacts should be in your phonebook

you would sign into google like the startup procedure in every freshly installed rom involving a wipe.
i i see and they will still be on there from last time saving them right??
i went to sign in and look at the phone book. there is no phone book. Do i sign it into mail on my phone??

It can take a bit of time for the contacts to come through, but when you originally did the setup as long as you used your gmail, it will backup and restore for you once it loads everything and checks and syncs
You could also go to settings> accounts & sync> Make sure the top 2 are checked and your gmail account is there. If it is click and make sure contacts are checked and then click sync.

Does flashing a rom delete contacts?

I just order the vibrant and cant wait to root and flash a rom. If i flash rom, does it delete wipe everything on the phone? (contacts, setting, etc)
I flashed hundreds of times. Text message and phone record logs, yes. Names and numbers, no. Those are stored on the SIM card.
thank you... thats all i wanted to know
on simcard or your google account, depends where u have been creating/savimg them to
FYI anytime you save a contact i would recommend picking Google account instead of saving to the phone or the sim card. Anytime you log in with a phone that has Google support, all of your numbers should sync with it. (if you saved them to Google)
I didn't know people still saved contacts directly on the phone anymore. Why would you want to if saving them in a google account can have such info sync'ed to any phone automatically... especially on an Android handset. Even the crappy-ass iPhone has a method of doing this.

+1, plus it makes it easier to manage your contacts from the google contacts page.
Sms backup will backup all of your text messages to gmail.

Phonebook Contacts keep disappearing

Hi guys, this is my first post but ive been lurking here for a while trying to learn more about my phone.
This is a bit long winded so please bare with me..
I bought this phone about a week ago from rogers wireless. It's locked to rogers and i updated the phone with the SE updater to the latest version they have. I bought the phone under my contract and then gave it to my wife (her old phone broke so i thought it would be nice to give her a new one)
She's now using her old simcard in the phone and other than the phonebook contacts keep disappearing, everything else works fine and all the txt msgs are intact.
1) whenever i switch sims from her's back to mine, the phonebook will be cleared.
2) today she told me that the phonebook cleared even though she didnt touch the simcard.
any idea as to why this is happening? she thinks the phone is defective i think its just something software. Im going to try and do a factory reset on the phone and setup the entire phone w/ her sim instead of mine (which is what i originally done) and then update again on SE updates.
Gmail sync
Hi
I've had the problem too. It turned out that the synchronization with Gmail was the culprit. The phone saw that a given contact was not in the contact list in Gmail and therefore deleted it from the phone instead of adding it to the Gmail contact list. The same goes for changes to contacts - if I change something on the phone, it disappears when the phone syncs. If I want to keep the changes, I have to make them in the Gmail list. I don't know how to change that behaviour.

Yeah that's just BS. I didn't sync with Gmail right at the start, so when I finally did it last weekend, I lost all of my 249 contacts. Luckily, I had them backed up on my old sim card, so I restored them, but all the contact pictures, facebook links etc were lost
Gmail sync fail
wow! thanks for solving the mystery Martin!
Any idea how i can either import all those contacts to gmail's contacts (other than manually inserting them.. )
Man it's so friggin annoying to have to restore my contact book every time the damn google sync does a check.

You could just turn off google sync
well it seems like ive turned off google sync and yet it still has this problem. I figure it might be attributed to her having to log into google accounts??? there is a message on the notification bar sometimes that asks her to log into her google account. Could that be it?
Every time it doesn't detect a password/or has the user logged in, will it purge all the contacts? Is there even a safe way of backing up the contacts on SD card and then transferring that file to my HD so i can reformat the phone for her?

All of my contacts are saved on Google and yours should be too. Just sign into your google account from your computer to confirm it and you can even edit them.
p.s. while on google you may have to select ADD STUFF then search for contacts and add it .

[Q] Help! Titanium Backup problem!

Hi Everyone!
I have a problem. The touchscreen of my HTC HD2 doens't work anymore. So basically I can't use my phone anymore. I've got a recent backup on my sd card of my contacts made with the Titanium Backup app.
My question is if I still will be able to redeem my contacts? Maybe on the computer? Any ideas?
Did you use your google/gmail account in accounts/sync to access the Market? That should have also synced to your google contacts online.
I've been going back and forth between Android builds and WP7. All I have to do is log in w/ my gmail credentials and all my contacts are downloaded.
Yeahhh!! That was it, its al in my gmail account! Didnt know that
Thank soo much for this.

Anytime!
I was just at a group dinner last night where one of the guests had just bought the Samsung Galaxy after losing her previous Android phone. She said that she lost all of her contact info and I was like "Really! Just do this...".
