Does adding a SD card hurt battery life - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm planning to add a 64GB or 128GB class 10 sd card to my note 4 and I'm wondering if and how much it will hurt the phone's battery life.
thanks in advance.

Hi there,
When adding an SD card, it is indeed another source that needs to be powered. But battery usage of this is neglectable, and you will not see any changes in daily usage.

I wish there were some articles with tests about this...one man's neglectable could be another's extra hour of bettery life

First time you insert it, system will scan and index content. After that don't worry about hurting battery by sdcard

What SD card

Just an off the wall question for everyone. What kind of micro SD card are you guys using? Anyone try a class 10 card versus a class 6 card and notice a different in the Vibrant??
Still using the standard..don't see a point until apps2sd is enabled...at that point ill probably just use the class 6 8gb from my mt3g

It's kinda complicated but here are a few things to note. First most people notice a decrease in speed when going from a 8gig class 6 to a 16gig class 6. This has to deal with the fact phones only regulate a certain amount of voltage to the microsd slot. In order to get more storage into the same amount of space more voltage is needed to keep it running at a class 6 rate of speed. The reason the phone doesn't adjust it's voltage is because it causes more heat (which can of course cause damage to the phone) and it waste more battery.
Second because of this voltage regulation you will never notice the difference between a class 6 and a class 10 card while inserted into the phone unless they figured out how to get class 10 speeds on lower voltage. So this means that you should never read stats presented by the manufacture and actually try to get people who own the card to do a speed test. If we can get every card benchmarked while inserted into a phone then we can have a better understanding of what card is actually faster.

[Q] best SD card class

what's the best and most suitable SD card class for running android?
what i understand (and correct me if i'm wrong) higher class cards are faster but take more battery power so causes shorter battery life and heat.
lower class cards on the other hand are slower but consume less energy.

It's really all about preference, but I think a class 4 will be more than enough. I've read that class 6 or more is only really needed if you plan on using the card on a camcorder for hd recording, but I just ordered a class 6 16GB myself

Big topic battery drain fix by formating sd card after a full charge! Lets get input!

I READ A 3 PAGE DISCUSSION ON SOME FOLKS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE SOURCE FOR THE EVO"s NOTORIUS BATTERY DRAIN?
SEEMS THAT THE EVO DOES NO TRICKLE CHARGE OVERNIGHT OR AT ALL.. AND IT RUNS OFF THE BATTERY LIFE THE LAST 10-15% OR CHARGING.
THEYRE IS DISCUSSION THAT THE FIX IS DUE TO FORMATING THE SD CARD AFTER A FULL CHARGE, THEN REINSERTING AND TOPPING OFF THE CHARGE TO 100%
THATS SUPPOSED TO FIX THE INTIAL 10-15% BATTERY DRAIN THAT WE NOTICE WITHIN THE FIRST 15 MINUTES EVERY TIME WERE DONE WITH A 100% CHARGE,
IM HOPING WITH THIS TOPIC WE CAN GET MORE INPUT AND TESTING FOR THIS ISSUE, ITS BEEN OVERLOOKED FOR TOOOO LONG!
LOOK AT THE VZW DROID X THAT BEING A MOTOROLA DEVICE IT HAS ALWAYS HAD SUPERB BATTERY LIFE, SO ITS NOT FAIR TO USE THE EXCUSE ITS JUST ANDROID O.S, IT HAS TO BE EITHER BATTERY OR DEVICE MFG RELATED, EVERY SAMSUNG DEVICE IVE OWNED HAD WAY BETTER BATTERY, EVERY HTC PHONE I OWNED HAS ALWAYS DRAINED,
BACK TO THE TOPIC, IF ANYONE HAS INPUT ON THE SD CARD FORMAT METHOD,WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT IT
Holy caps lock!
1. Please don't type IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT NICE TO READ
2. Formatting the sd card won't do anything to the battery stats, so I don't see 'how' that helps, so I'll need to see some documentation.
3. Battery life is determined by the actually size, and for the evo, it should have been bigger than 1500mAH, such other phones have bigger batteries, and the kernel plays a role.
Formating the SD card WILL NOT affect the battery life.
lol what are you thinking.
if your upset about the 10% drain get an SBC kernel

Wow, wtf is going on in here?
The way to optimize battery life is to calibrate battery stats and find the best rom/kernel/clockspeed for your particular phone.
SD card has NOTHING to do with battery life.

EMMC vs SD Install Battery Life

Perhaps a stupid question, but I was wondering if running CM7.1 from an SD card will noticeably drain the battery more than running it from the internal EMMC? Is there any benefit battery wise to running CM7 on EMMC?

SD cards are very low power devices. They only draw power when being read or written to. I do not think you would notice any difference. The internal storage device is also an SD card, just permanently installed (emmc - embedded multi-media card). Besides, you probably would have an SD in the slot anyway. But some say there is a slight speed difference, especially for certain SD cards.

Galaxy S3 Battery without SDHC

So...like a number of S3 users out there, I was also pretty disappointed by the battery life...
Then, i initialized the device, using kies and did a factory reset...but this time, i didnt insert the 16 GB SDHC card in and used it without it for the first battery cycle....i was SHOCKED by the results i got!!
Good..right?
Now, im confused as wat to do now...cuz I have to use my SDHC...can anyone suggest why this happened?
P.S.My previous battery stats attached here...
i think its the media-server
put the card in and leave the phone alone,so the media-server can index the files on the sd-card

The card has been inserted for the past 5-6 months...I was always getting battery around this range..
Looks like you had the media-server bug. Media server wasn't letting your phone go in to deep sleep.
Put your SD card back in, take a backup, format it and then put your data back in.
That solved it for me.

Actually nothing impressive, got about one day and 18 hours runtime including a lot of listening to music and random use of facebook for a short time and of course other stuff. With sdhc card insered.
Was on latest firmware and rooted phone.

This one was with the sdhc!
Besides, ask the ppl suffering from battery drain whether this is impressive or not :/
