Hello guys,
i got a sony z1 and i looked through all threads how to root and install custom roms and all methods seem pretty intense.
Is it not easier just to do it the official way ? i mean sony provides everything that you need to unlock and flash things. Can i do it this way ?
1. Unlock Bootloader officially :
http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
2. Download Sony Flash Tool:
http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/
3. Download a custom rom FTF and flash it with Flash Tool.
does it work that way ? or have i missed something ? thanks guys

Backup your Ta partition before unlocking..!!
hey thanks !
i think i really messed up. I am on 5.0.2 Lollipop and rooted with kingroot. But i disliked kingroot because i read that the software might install some spyware on your phone. so i uninstalled it again and lost root. Now i am stuck. i think something is messed up in my root folder. Even the official 5.1.1 rom cant be installed.
is there another way to root 5.0.2 and backup the TA partition ?

You could have replaced KingRoot with supersu.
There is a thread here that describes the way.

I can't remember because I backed up my ta portion long time ago but do you really need root to do it?

you may flash *.108 firmware ,root it,backup your ta,unlock your bootloader, install recovery, flash any custom rom of your choice, also do read for bugs/problems in rom before flashing.
if you are a beginner i would advise you not to unlock bootloader . first play with roms that work with locked bootloader then unlock it ,as with locked bootloader it is very easy to recover your device...:good::fingers-crossed:
Thanks man. I did not know that you could downgrade with no root and locked bootloader. I am now on *.108 Firmware 4.4.4 kitkat.
I just have 2 more questions then i am really happy.
1. I have some trouble with rooting using NUTS method.
after clicking on the install.bat cmd opens and i type 3 for Installation on unrooted rom using towelroot method
and then hit enter. nothing happens. after looking at some other threads here i realized maybe sony patched 4.4.4 so towelroot does not work anymore.
any otherway to install it ?

thanks! worked and the dualrecovery installer worked too. After I updated the ADB drivers. :good:
TA-Partition saved with TWRP. I did not know that losing the TA-partition would delete the x-reality, bionz and other features forever.
I mean why do people still unlock their bootloader when they can just downgrade and install recovery ?
Just in case... does upgrading / downgrading with flashtool always work on a locked unrooted Z1 or do higher firmwares prevent you from downgrading ? Could i just flash a pre-rooted TFT for example 5.1.1 and dont have to worry about root after installation?

Flashtool does always work. It doesn't matter which firmware your phones uses, if it is rooted or not or your bootloader locked or unlocked.

Best way is to flash the full new rom (4.3 probably) in fastboot, reroot, restore apps with Titanium Backup and you`re done. Flashing a full rom is better than updating an excisting one imo. Link for how to flash stock rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312.

You can be on stock with no mods unlocked rooted with a custom recovery and you will get the ota update and it will install fine.
The ota update link will be posted here before you get on your device so it's good to have a custom recovery so you can just flash it and it will also protect you from losing root or custom recovery

I updated my Z1 to 14.2.A.1.136. How do I root it? The methods in the guide stickies I read doesn't work for me. Please assist.
You have to downgrade to android 4.2.2, and then root it, the use [NUT]'s guide to upgrade to 14.2.A.1.136

The .136 cannot be rooted directly but can be Rooted with the method by NUT for Locked Bootloader. On C6903 you can downgrade with Flashtool v0.9.13 directly to .534 with FW provided by NUT to not lose IMEI, then Root with Bin4ry, then Update to .290 with the instructions given HERE, when you have .290 rooted you are ready to update to .136 with the same method HERE.
Watch the Video Tutorial How To in the first Link for .290. It will explain all.
After you get .136 Rooted you can Backup TA First and then Unlock Bootloader. Get Root on your Phone will not void your Warranty, Unlock Bootloader Yes, but if you Backup TA you can Relock your Bootloader without losing Warranty.

Read before post, all threads explain and you asking always the same question. You want root, then there is no official way for it.
BTW, you can use all FTF which you like, I recommended the FTF by NUT because with that you will preserve your IMEI.

To preserve Root you cannot use PC Companion, FOTA or anything like that, just Flashtool v.0.9.13 and update to .136. You can skip the Update to .290 and go directly to .136, both of them using the same method so go for .136.

You can do this also in this way.
Thanks to all who chipped in to help. I currently owned the Z1 for about 4 days. While I previously owned an Android phone, I am totally new to the Sony smartphones as well as their file systems.
Part of the reason why I chose to buy to this phone is the apparent ease of root. However, it seems that that is not the case. 4.3 apparently is not rootable with 1-click. Compounded by the fact is that there is some sort of unique identifier in this TA partition (whatever that is).
Please treat me as a noob and answer my queries with as much info as possible.
Believe me when I said I have done my fair share of reading and trying to understand what is the entire process all about, I am still not really making any sense of most of it. There is only so much Google can do for you before you start seeking personalised advice.
Now, from what I gathered in this thread, I apparently need to:
1. Downgrade to 4.2.2 (.534) firmware, using a FTF posted by someone called Nuts. I need to do this 'cos I don't want to lose my IMEI, which is some sort of bug.
2. I then need to root it with a software called "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry". Apparently, Bin4ry is a person and not a software.
3. Then in order to upgrade to 4.3 (.136), I need to flash a special FTF/ZIP by made by Nuts again, using the unofficial Flashtool.
Am I right so far?
If I flash that special FTF/ZIP, does it deviate my Z1 from stock ROM? Can I still get FOTA updates?
Can I do all this without unlocking the bootloader?

Thanks for the reply.
It is knowing that commands operating in MM, thought he could do the same in LP, have root eventhough have locked bootloader, all for ADB commands.

Root on Marshmallow requires a modified kernel. You cannot boot a modified kernel with a locked bootloader.
I don't know about other models, but H811 allows you to unlock the bootloader and root on Marshmallow, but it's not via supersu injection.
Well months have been passed. Any news about to root H815P? I still have my Bootloader locked and LG's site says that my model cant be unlocked. Any idea?
Guys. This is for sending files to the phone kinda like adb. Not root. It more like for executing files that are already on the phone.
IN No WAY IS THIS A ROOT METHOD
YOU CANNOT ROOT MM WITH A LOCKED BL. ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN ANYTIME SOON

Rooting MM with Superuser ... is not possible with locked bootloaders as Chainfire's method requires modification of the boot partition and that equates to a brick with bootloaders that are not officially unlocked through LG.
Downgrade to LP, root and install steadfasterX's TWRP-in-FisH @ https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/locked-twrpinfish-locked-g4-devices-t3573048 if you want a working custom recovery version that will work on LG G4's with locked bootloaders. Version 3 Beta 4 & 5 are very stable - download links are in later posts on his site.
He is working on porting EFIdroid in FisH, that if successful will eventually allow one to boot custom roms, i.e., you may be able to have your rooted MM with a locked bootloader at some point ... just not yet.

If on MM you will first have to downgrade to LP with LGUP-NEW at https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/lgup-install-kdz-mm-lp-t3249803 if you are able to. You will have to search for an H815P10 stock rom. Then see if you can find a pre-rooted image of that rom. You can follow this guide to obtain root or install a pre-rooted image if you are able to find one: Root ANY LG G4 Variant 100% Success Directives | Root Injection | Less Bricks at https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-100-root-success-directives-root-t3180586.
If you want a custom recovery for your locked bootloader, check this out by steadfasterX: [LOCKED][G4][TWRP][UNOFFICIAL] TWRP-in-FIsH for all locked G4 devices at https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/locked-twrpinfish-locked-g4-devices-t3573048
You will not be able to install a custom rom, however, but steadfasterX is working on EFIdroid-inFisH that, if successful, will eventually allow the installation of a custom rom on a locked bootloader.
Hope it helps.

hey guys,
Hope I am not too late, I found a way around this.
What I did was downgrade from Marshmallow to Lollipop.
I did it by using the LGUP program and following this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/fix-unbricking-lg-g4-h818p-stuck-t3707485
In short what I did was:
1. Download the kdz
2. Download LGUP and install it, then the dll thing that comes in the archive.
3. Install LG drivers
4. Put device in download mode by pressing up and inserting a usb cable when device is powered off
5. start LGUP and select "Refurbish"
6. in the path select the kdz (even though its looking for tot files).
7. Flash Lollipop and boot
8. Go back to download mode, now you have Send_Command.exe
Then I flashed "H815L 10F.kdz" which gave me stock Lollipop on 815L. I am not sure where I got it, It was sitting on my disk. But basically anything which has H815L (for the model), and 10 which means its Lollipop should work.
Then I could go in to download mode and run Send_Command.exe

NOTE: All LG G4's (with the exception of H818), can be unlocked unofficially now with steadfasterX's: [UNLOCK][UNOFFICIAL][G4] Unlock **ANY** LG G4 device with UsU, provided you are on stock Marshmallow and your ARB is less than or equal to 2.
I.E., you can now install a custom TWRP recovery, root and upgrade to Nougat, Oreo etc.
Anyone know of a way to root 23.5.A.0.570 from within the ROM?
Of course you can create custom firmware with Flashtool, but is there other way?
Kingroot is useless at the moment.

Don't know if was the kernel or just the fact to unlocked the bootloader.

Its because of the Bootloader u unlocked.. Unlocking bootloader first time will erase ur all datas..
And there is no need to unlock ur bootloader. Simply go back to KK or LP then root it and install recovery. After that flash a pre rooted MM rom.. Simple
And i think after unlocking bootloader u have lost some Sony features.. Did u make ur TA (DRM) Key backup..??
Why do people think it's too difficult to downgrade to another version of Android, root and install a rooted android mm zip thought recovery?

I've done that, but still kept getting bootloops no matter what. I don't think I would call myself noob

Are you using Xposed? because after many re-flashes and reinstalls on different things, I think, that for me, few of the xposed mods were causing the loops. For example I miss the immersive mods in games etc and I simply can't get it to work correctly as it was, no matter what I try, so different xposed mods related mostly to that were causing the loops for me. I am currently reflashing at the moment

I had Xposed, but revmoved it before flashing. Anyway I'm currently too comfy in the full stock to go through the whole disgrace, upgrade,... ordeal again. I went through the whole circus maybe 5 tones few days back

it happened to me too, tried almost 5-7 flashin via recovery from many stock lollipop n kitkat, but always get looping boot, i could get in to the language choose screen, but when i touch the screen, it will restart n always like that. but yesterday i successed flashing via recovery. what i was doin is, flash the germany generic ftf 264, then root via kingroot n recovery (i choose twrp). then use the zip MM from a thread, the back name of the zip is 1281-9709_R3D, then i flashed the 3 files for root from MM beta thread, finally i flashed bootloop fix from the same thread. then boom, get in to the boot and finished normally

Oh crap, I knew it, but in the Sony developer's website doesn't show this information...
About DRM, I know I have the backup, but I don't know where, lol. Anyway, in the same topic, there's a procedure to recover the features.
tks for explanations!

HI friend I need a post step by step, I haven't any knowledge about it, if I can unlock it with marshmallow or if I have to downgrade ...
And the same for backing up my TA partition, there's a tool but it didn't work for me

So u want to root ur MM right?
Well u can simply downgrade and root it along with recovery. Then backup ur drm key using TA Backup tool from xda. After that u can flash a pre rooted MM rom

I already have rooted marshmallow but now I want to unlock it
Hello and Happy new year everybody.
Recently i rooted my device (p9 lite single sim) unlocking the bootloader and installing twrp as Mandrigan's guide suggested.
As i know it is not safe to install OTA updates on a rooted device. Is there any way to do it without unrooting
the phone? Somewhere i read about flashfire but the app itself highlights that huawei devices are easily
bricked. The most common answer i find is to install the stock firmware but i cannot find anywhere
the firmware for my version (VNS-L31C150B121). Any ideas? Would the full unroot of SuperSU assist
me in that way?
Sorry for the many questions in one post.
Thanks in advance.
I'm a bit confused.
At any stock update you will loose root and TWRP and your unlocked bootloader will be locked again.
Be aware to have saved unlock code...

Any update/flash can, theoretically, brick your device...
