First, plug phone into computer, and install updater software from the phone that is on the device in 'Installer Mode'. Take the download on the PC, then follow directions below, and you can still have root after.

Hi again,
I installed the upgrade assistant in installer mode but for some reason it is not picking up the new NE9 update on my computer. See attached print screen. Very strange.. It sees the update on my phone to download though.:cyclops: Do you know why this is and how I can get it to see the update on the upgrade assistant as you mentioned?
Kind Regards
Can you explain why you want the update so bad? You do realize that rooting and accepting official otas is completely contradictory, correct? OTAs are generally what fix things like what towelroot exploits. If you accept official OTA, you will likely lose root.
But can't I just re root after the ota? I guess the reason I want the Ota because I heard of camera enhancements and stability fixes

No. OTA have patches for known security flaws as well. The flaw that towelroot relies on is closed after the new OTA. Meaning, no more root.
edit: in this case I believe folks have figured out a work around for keeping root with the update. In general though, if you value root and what it provides you do not accept official releases.

@ks3rv3rg I believe the links mentioned above provide a workaround for the Root to be kept after updating.
As for the problem nick, I can't help you there. I haven't personally take it as I see taking OTA's is silly with a rooted phone you can modify to be much more. Perhaps someone else who has done it will chime in...
Thank you both for your perspectives.. Plus, I can always just wait for a ROM that currently has the update installed.

I think you are referring to my safestrap flashable OTA zip file. I'm going to keep that one in my back pocket for the next OTA since the kernel swap worked.

I have a similar question but reversed. How do I stop it from updating and it from asking me to update? I have the free version of titanium backup and can't freeze it. Is their another way? I can't turn off SDM that runs the ota upgrade i can only force stop it.

Titanium Backup
I am not sure if someone already post this but here is my question.
I have had android tablet in the past and have always rooted them for games and TitaniumBackup. I recently got a NOTE 3 from Verizon and was looking to ROOT that also as well but to not avail. For random reasons Verizon locked the boot loader(If I am wrong plz correct me). I just updated to 5.0 Lollipop. Is my device still unrootable ( if that is a term. DERP!!!). The model number is sm-n900v. Can anyone help me? Post links on how to's or anything any help would be grateful. Thank You.
Yea no root
for lollipop 5.0 for verizon note 3, no known root method is out nor available yet.

Wonderful. My extent of developing was putting together some roms (HC and ICS) for the Toshiba Thrive a few years ago, but if I can help in any way to gain root access for Verizon 4.4.4 or 5.0, I'll do what I can.

Hi guys, I'm on bone stock 4.4.4 and Verizon is pushing the 5.0 update as we speak.
I've had the note three on stock for too long and I need some new options for multi window etc so I need root. Am I seeing that a root for 4.4.4 is in progress? If so, I'll stay there, but I really want to strap/update to 5.0 afterwords. Anyone have some thoughts about the difficulty of maintaining root on the switch to 5.0?
i would love to be kept int he loop.. i was on 4.4.2 adn foolishly updated to 4.4.4 i just want root again... and if 5.0 can root i would update too

When I first got my Version s5 I learned I could not root. I noticed a update this morning and don't want to install because I have been waiting to root. In hopes some one has figured it out? My phone is "BOG5" build and last I checked it was unrootable. Just making sure I don't miss out on rooting finally. And if there is no root should I still not install the update?
Update note: I looked and could not root "bog5", so I updated now my phone is running android 5.0 with build "Bok3". Is this rootable?
Thanks

I thought the same thing. I didn't think it would hurt to ask. I was looking into the update and it's been sent out since the end of last year. I was hoping someone found something in the new build that they could exploit to root. Also there is word that the s5 is rootable but it's not available. Idk but I hope some figures out the root. If I knew how or even enough about it I would try. Stupid company's locking the bootloader make me angery. Lol

You do not need root to read most system files.
It used to be in /cache but deletes itself after the flash.

I know. Since I flashed it, I couldn't pull the ota through logcat.
My update is having issues. Tried a handful of times and would get "update could not be verified" or something similar after the download would complete update. When it doesn't fail verification, the install fails after rebooting. wtf, I have tried the VZW/Moto software update program but it returns that I have the latest software. Guess that channel might not be updated yet.

I'm not well versed in this realm of rooting, but I've rooted my V20 (H918) and I'd like to update to the latest version possible and not lose root. I think it involves using some kdz file or something and flashing that, is that right? Let me know, thank you.
Wrong, you have to use this @runningnak3d tutorial to go back to root...but so far, even if you are on H91010T, you can roll back and root. ARB has not yet been implemented on this phone, so you're good to use any rooting method you see fit in this forum. Enjoy!

I don't know what version of H918 you're on now, but if I'm not mistaken 10k is the last one that you can still mess up and still get root back by downgrading to an earlier version, root and then upgrade. any version after 10k will increment ARB to 1 whereby you will not be able to get root if you lose it. that said, the latest version out now is 10s and if you have root then you should also have TWRP. here's my guide for updating to the latest versions while keep root https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/rom-h91810q-stock-rom-twrp-flashable-zip-t3681312. looking at this now, I haven't posted the 10s update file, which I will do now... keep in mind that if you update to 10s that if you lose TWRP you'll be fscked and stuck without root, which at this point could be permanently.
EDIT: 10s is a go! original post updated with link. also removing the older versions from Google Drive to free up space... if they're still needed, PM

Hey, I followed the instructions per your thread and successfully installed 10s and kept root! The bad news is that I did a factory reset immediately after and now it keeps bootlooping into TWRP. Any idea how to fix this? Sadly I didn't make a backup because my microsd card was too small and I didn't have the patience to wait til tomorrow and go out and buy one, really hope I didn't kick myself in the ass and brick my phone. :crying:
Edit:
I was able to find a fix by following these instructions:
"I had this happen to me after installing TWRP for the first time. It would keep rebooting to TWRP. This was after making sure I flashed SuperSU as well. Eventually in a moment of "might as well see what will happen" I rebooted then held down the power button and volume down. Got to the option if I wanted to factory reset my phone which I did which booted into TWRP. Rebooted to system from there which got me out of the TWRP Bootloop."
I also set my phone up again and can confirm that 10s is still good with root! Thanks for the guide and work, man. Much appreciated!
