Screen keeps pulsing even with no notification - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I did a Google search for this and couldn't find anything that matched my issue. I thought there was a post on XDA about something similar but nothing came up.
I have 'approach for moto display activated'. I have all other moto activations deactivated.
I have 'wake screen on moto display' activated. I prefer to wave my hand to wake my screen.
I have noticed that when I'm driving, the phone keeps waking the screen. It's like the phone is thinking I'm moving the phone but I thought I had all those options turned off. There isn't anything making movements over the IR sensors.
Am I mistaken when I think the screen should not come on when it senses motion?

Yeah, I also think the sensitity is way too high... I have it sitting next to me on the desk @work about 50cm away.... display goes on all the time... annoying ._.

The phone senses movement and will wake. Put it on a pillow or something and gently move the pillow. The display will wake. Same principle in vehicle. Any jarring or bouncing motion will wake display. The phone won't do this if its face down or on it's side.

An option to disable the movement wake would be great. I'm surprised they don't have the option along with the approach option.

Face down doesn't help when you're using the speakers.
A double tap to wake option in a custom kernel would be beneficial IF it would be feasible with this processor.

Well that's the only way to disable it from waking when you move it, LOLZ.

I know.... But my statement was I wish that they had an option to disable the motion like they did with the approach. I'd much rather have approach enabled and motion disabled.

I totally agree.

I thought mine was doing that too but after testing it yesterday on the way home I think that it's my hand that's activating it. I have the phone mounted on an air vent next to the steering wheel and when my hand is up there it activates the screen, if it's not there it doesn't seem to come on at all even going over bumps etc.
Maybe you have something similar? I have all of the assist option on and it's in driving mode during this.

Mine does the same, but it was on a table far enough from me to not be triggered by movement, just reproducing some music. If it s also sensible to that it doesn't make sense. I already had to switch off moto voice cause it got triggered by almost everything, even the runtle of the fridge. If I have to switch off all the moto functionalities cause they work bad well than I could have bought another phone.

Have to say I agree here. I would love to be able to either adjust the sensitivity to movement of durable the move to wake while keeping the proximity and turned on.

I'd like Active Display(breathing) more if it wasn't so sensitive...

It's definitely not a battery issue, but it bothers me whenever the slightest tap sets off the clock popup. I don't think it's a case issue since I use a light-weight one (Poetic slim case). I would like to think that the context-processor responds to the disruption in the magnetic field which is why it's so sensitive. I can't test this though.....Does anyone happen to have a flip cover for the Moto X?
I use an app called uListen so I can stream YouTube videos with my screen off. I've noticed that app makes the active display go nuts.

It acts when the phone moves simulating you picking it up. When I'm on my recliner it activates every time I move in the recliner. It does what it is meant to do I like it for checking the time and not having to activate the phone.

Turn the phone over so the screen is facing down. Problem solved.
I love it. I pick the phone up and just swipe to wake. Then with a Nova Launcher gesture (swipe up to toggle Quick Settings) and a custom Sleep tile in the bottom right thanks to GravityBox, I've probably cut my mashing on the power button by probably 95%. I barely have to touch it anymore.
I love the active display but it does annoy me when I'm driving. I stick it in the cup holder and every time the truck moves, the screen turns on and I can see it out of the corner of my eye. And I don't know if anyone else lives in PA, but trying to avoid the potholes and inevitably hitting one keeps the screen on almost the entire time...
I also found I now pick up my Nexus 7 expecting the screen to turn on automatically

Hahaha, I've done the same with my Galaxy Nexus and even my wife's Razr Maxx.
PA here too... and the potholes have become unbearable.
I really like the sensitivity... I think its great that it will pop on virtually anytime I move the phone, but not to the point of wasting my battery. I swear there have been times where I could just wave my hand over the phone and it would flick the time and lock up, but maybe it was just in my head.
I hear ya all on the Nexus 7 deal, I do the same from time to time, just expect it to turn on. Would be something easy for Google to add moving forward though.

Well that just defeats the purpose of the active display
But mine is very sensitive as well. Even when there is no movement I will see it go on . Doesn't really bother me. Only when I use another phone...I end up shaking the phone to get the active display to show

Do you Assist app for driving? I've noticed that after I'm driving for a couple minutes the phone must turn down the active notifications as it won't turn on with little bumps. Sometimes it won't even turn on when I pick it up.
But sitting in my house, it'll turn on every time I bump it.
Cover the proximity sensor and it'll assume it's face down or in your pocket.
The proximity sensor is on ALL the time, and it is used in conjunction with the accelerometer to turn on the screen. If you don't want it to turn on in certain situations, do the above.
I cover it with my microfiber screen wiping cloth sometimes when I want it face up but without AN.

double tap to wake

Does anybody know if the screen on the Moto X Pure supports this function? Its certainly nice to not have to pick up the phone to take a quick peek at the screen.
I really would like it to be but i dont think it will im coming from a G4 and its one of the best features
once we get root and make a kernel
i think you can move your hand over it to get active display on from there you should be able to wake i think
It wakes before you touch the screen by just reaching for it. Far better than double tap to wake

I agree. The phone will wake when you wave your hand over it. So if there is dirt or anything unpleasant on your hands, you don't have to touch the phone at all to wake it. This is better than 2x tap. And if your phone is on the edge of something, there isn't a chance that you will knock it down, since you won't have to touch the phone.
D2W is old school. Say hello to waves.
Sent from my Moto X (2014) via Tapatalk
Waving isn't not a replacement for double tap... No one should assume that. Some folks love double tap. I hope to see it added soon
Waving is less reliable also. I have to wave a few times to wake it up sometimes. That did not happen with d2tw on other phone I tried.
I like the wave, but I do miss dt2w that takes you directly to your home screen. But to be honest, 95 % of the time I did dt2w, I was checking the time or seeing if I had any messages and didn't need to go to my home screen, so the wave is pretty cool in that fact.
Waving isn't a replacement true, I would of liked to see dttw as well its a good replacement since when u hold ur phone with one hand using ur thumb to do so and wake up the phone
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
You don't have to wave. The screen wakes as you approach it. The screen comes on long before you can double tap..
i hope we can get the double tap to wake soon. the waiving thing is kinda janky doesn't work all the time and would like it to bring me to the full lock screen rather then a dark black screen .
I have to admit I am kind of spoiled by it from my G2. My X won't be here until next week so the jury is still out on the wave. At least I know i can double tap off once I get my Nova loaded.
I actually miss double-tap to lock/sleep more. The waving is cool enough for waking it back up, but having to mash the power button to lock it sucks.
I found a couple of transparent widgets that kind of do this, but the problem is that they are incompatible with Trusted Devices (BT, NFC) that I use a lot, and you have to reenter your pin if you use these widgets.
I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too....

How do these sensors work?

So there's two ir at the bottom and one at the top. When I wave my hand by the top ir it wakes up the moto display but when I wave it by the bottom ones nothing happens? I do see the red or lights on them. But are the bottoms ones supposed to be for something els.
Or Is there a certain way of motion?

From playing with the sensors it looks like the bottom set only respond to the reach gesture. The top one only responds both reach and wave. Seems deliberate

Do I have to wave over the bottom sensor or hover? Neither way works when I "reach".

Moto Display settings. Every time the phone is lifted from a surface, nudged or pulled from a pocket, the display should show a B/W lockscreen with the clock and notification icons.
the only problem is it last 1s only not giving enough time to swipe.......maybe I have a faulty device

I've just bought a Moto X Play, and it did take an hour or so to get used to the swipe-the-dot to unlock it, that's because I was swiping in the wrong direction lol.
But seriously, just pick the phone up or pull it out of your pocket to check or swipe.
anyway, i dont know why it seems so weird?
The sensors are so usefull and comfortable and phones get continiously improved, that i am very surprised about it.
If all improvements were neglected and seemed strange, i would have stayed on my Sony Ericsson P900...
On my Moto G Lte and Moto X Play using Gravity Screen with only proximity sensor uses here on both phones only 0,2-0,3% a charge according to Gsam. Other options in that app like movement use a lot more battery so have that disabled in that app.
Now screen off: put device face down on table, etc. Or put in pocket or bag.
Screen on: pick faced down device up. Pull out of pocket/bag. Or wave over proximity sensor next to top speaker grill on the right.
As extra screen off without using power button I have set: slide up home button=Greenify+lock screen. Double tap home screen and/or status bar with Apex or Nova launcher. A sleep button in Quick Setting and Power Tools.
Moto's lighting up Active Display was also far to short for me. But more irritating was the so often unneeded lighting up of display and keeping device awake according to Wakelock Detector. When device in bag or pocket while walking or driving. Putting glass on table. Moving leg in bed. Even when heavy trucks drive trough the street where I work.
So now using Moto Ambient display. Only lighting up screen after missed call or text. Idle drain is now less than wirh Active Display.

I am waiting for my Moto Play...
If i dont like it in the first month i will just return it! Let's see.
Received my Moto X yesterday. First impression compared to my Moto X 2014, is that Play does not have the character and style of 2014 model.. And with no wave to wake or double tap, I feel that I went years back, in a negative way... At the current levels of mobiles phones, if you dont put the two above at least put a fingerprint sensor.
I will test it for 10 more days, but first feelings are negative. On the positive side is the wonderful camera!

Double tap to wake is utter trash

As the title may indicate, I'm getting really frustrated with my phone constantly waking in my pocket. I do like using DTTW when it actually works correctly, and carry the display side in against the leg to prevent damage... But i'm getting pretty freaking mad samsung over the pocket dialing, pocket setting changes, pocket flashlight activation, etc... I know this forum used to have all kinds of threads about this, some reporting faulty proximity sensors and such. I'm starting to wonder if mine has a hardware issue with the sensor because it was one of the first wave of phones produced, so the initial hardware revision, and my problem has never been fixed by a system update.
So does anybody have any ideas that could help? I always have accidental touch protection" enabled, and don't use lift to wake or any other gestures. I'm on the newest system version, I've cleared the caches multiple times... I'm just about mad enough to go demand a replacement, no BS, because losing a function like this should not happen on a freaking thousand dollar phone.

Honestly, your issue, and the fact they got rid of the led notification light, are my only 2 issues with this phone.
I was having all the same problems as you are to an extent, until I just gave up cut off DTTW altogether. Now I just use tap to wake AOD and I'm actually just as pleased. But yeah, the proximity sensor is busted with this phone for sure.

I probably would do the same if I didn't have the plus model and also wouldn't be so bothered by this... But the position of our power button is just terrible for one handed use, especially if you use your left. That's why I'm in the habit of DTTW on then using the one handed operation + app to turn off. It's a decent bandaid for the otherwise out-of-reach button. The other thing is that it really isn't a compromise we should have to make in such an expensive, "luxury-priced" phone... I mean this wake gesture has been around for at least five years and I don't think it's ever been implemented so badly... I mean this was never an issue with my old HTC one or my pixel.

And added to the fact is they removed that pressure sensitive or whatever it's called home button and moved the power button to the top - not as easy to use as it used to be with previous Galaxy devices now.
