Hey there!
Since there is no CM12.1 port available at the Moment, I've searched for a way to change the theme in my Moto X. So during my search, I stumbled across Layers, the build in theme engine of Lollipop. Unfortunately, when I try to Reboot the device after applying the theme, my phone stays at a blackscreen. Is there anyone who knows how to get it working on the Style?

CM do not support Layers.
I'm planning on bringing Slim support soon and will provide layers as well.
No ETA at the moment.

Layers doesn't work on stock android except for OEM's like Sony and ToughWize. Layers will work on stock Marshmallow though. To get boot normally boot to TWRP mount system then go to system/vendor/overlays folder and delete all the apks there.

Boot to twrp, mount system, open the file manager, navigate to /system/vendor/overlay, delete all of the contents of this folder, reboot.

It would seem that the RRO layers themes do work on the Marshmallow stock ROM. After hearing about Marshmallow supporting it by default, i decided to see if it actually works on the Stock Marshmallow ROM. As far as I can tell, the only thing that doesn't work for me is the soft reboot after selecting the desired layer and applying it. :victory:
Update - If after uninstalling certain layers, the theme doesn't change back to normal, then using a file explorer, go to system/vendor/overlays and delete all the contents in the folder.
Will this work in moto g turbo too running marshmallow?
I read a post in x play page that using two themes same time results in bootloop

I do not know.. It should work.. But you might want to make a backup of your rom and data in recovery before applying a layers theme.

This has always been an issue with RRO, if you apply some things that overlap what they do. Not exclusive to Moto X or any device, in the right combination it will bootloop, but you should be able to boot into safe mode, or via the TWRP file manager, and remove the offending APK's from /system/vendor/overlay, and reboot and the phone will be happy again.
Of course you can always backup and restore a nandroid, but layers was designed so this shouldn't ever be necessary.
Make a tutorial mate.

Yes and no... if you know nothing about layers my answer was a bit sarcastic, but the tutorial would be that... root and use Layers Manager app from the Play Store.

I'm not new to the rooting community. I'm only new to RRO. I've tried it on my old phone and i ended up crashing everything on my phone.. (Not moto) it was an asus zenfone. Since then i haven't tried layers. Given the fact that mm is supporting rro layers natively has piqued my interest for it, so was inquisitive abt it. Thanks mate.

I have busybox installed. I think the problem is that can't reboot correctly. When I reboot it seems it always does a softboot. The notifications remain, the recent apps too. Also some tweaks I made on gravity box (MM) that require reboot aren't applied.
By the way, sorry for my English, I'm Italian.

i also had the same problem because i installed busybox in "system/bin" but after installing busybox in "system/xbin" layers are working perfectly. I'm also using xposed & gravitybox.
It worked! Thank you! I didn't read correctly the first time (missed that "x"). The Gravity Box problem is still there (as expected) but i don't think this is the right place in the forums to talk about that. I hope to find a solution soon
Hi guys
I've decided to give layers a go but for the life of me I can't get it to work. When I apply my overlays I am promoted to reboot. After I reboot nothing... No theme, no overlays nothing.
Does this work on the stock ROM 6.01?
Are there specific themes that will work?
Am I doing this wrong?

I am using Milos UI, it looks great. When prompting for reboot inside layers manager app, don't reboot from there, just manually reboot. It worked for me..
I'm using layers on my moto G with Krexus ROM. Can someone confirm that layers is compatible with the stock 6.01 rom.
The link posted above had people talking about custom ROMs so I'm still in doubt

Yes its compatible but it is missing some commits and due to that some themes likes magpie, coalesce, etc won't be able to change colors.

Hey man, I saw you had Coalesce and Figlio. I was actually trying to decide which one of those to buy and try for Nougat. If you don't mind, which one do you prefer? Or think works better with N?
Guys N just dropped some most Substratum themes are not working perfectly on N. They can be used but everything won't work perfectly. Also since we are on stock rom we are using Substratum Legacy you need a custom ROM with the oms commits in order to get Masquerade and since N just dropped there aren't any at the moment

Came here to say this. Non of the themes are really compatible with N yet. I tried about a dozen different ones. Ran into issues with apps force closing after applying themes. I had a few crash Documents, a few that would crash settings when you go to change certain settings. Give it a little bit for the themes to update. Might have to wait for the factory images to go live for the 6P. All in all, substratum does work in legacy mode so you need to reboot after changes are applied. Just note that you may run into errors and FC's.
Deity theme works in legacy mode with no issues, using theme ready gapps though

Yes... However, Google merged a commit which broke RRO in source with 7.1.1. It's currently broken for any 7.1.1 ROM. Don't use it to theme Android System or SystemUI. Anything framework related will cause a boot loop. IIRC, someone involved with substratum development commented on the change and a Google engineer replied back saying it was already fixed internally and they would push an update soon. Might come with a quick 7.1.2 follow up, maybe the January security update, or maybe later. We'll just have to wait and see.
That's legacy though, ROMs with OMS should be okay. Just know how to recover if you boot loop.

Don't blame the theme, it didn't do anything on its own. Substratum gives a very clear warning about bootloops with stock 7.1.1 that you willingly chose to disregard.

Substratum does warn of potential bootloop problems but Swift Dark theme has a drop down menu to choose the correct Android version before installing. The dev of that theme does say you can disregard the Substratum warnings, which obviously wasn't wise in this case. But that theme won't screw up a 7.1.1 stock Nexus phone if it is installed correctly.
People also ignore the instructions that Substratum doesn't play well with CM based roms and complain when it screws up their phones. Most of the bad reviews in the Play Store are from people who didn't read the instructions first.

Very true ?
I've just come from Dirty Unicorns and Pure Nexus on a 6P, and I've loved substratum for theming my phone. But... OOS would be legacy, I understand. Has anyone tried Subs on OP5, any recommendations? I've also seen a Magisk module for making legacy systemless. Anyone tried it? I don't feel like boot looping my new phone!
Also if I'm just rooted, can I install themes like swift black?
Don't use Substratum on OOS, rooted or not, I tried it and ended up having to restore the backup I'd made after it caused all sorts of complications, my advice? Wait for the custom roms to start appearing.

Thank you for saving me all sorts of trouble.
I tried "Navigate" to configure the navbar. Works without issues. But i wouldn't apply system wide themes. Like @djsubterrain said.
With root you can apply themes system wide that support OOS (I think only swift dark and black right now)
I did and it's working fine, full black apps and system.
If you're paranoid then you can just theme apps and use built in themer to make system black or white.
Does anyone tried ozone substratum?

Yeah... I was always able to theme via substratum on all of my rooted devices, including oneplus 3 on stock.
The thing is, you generally, (lie 99% of the time) should not theme system ui or android system as that almost always results in a bootloop.
This is with the exclusion of themes specifically designed for oxygen os like k clock and swift dark

I use it for centered clock, QS Tiles 4 icons and Clear All (tasks) button on the left.
No problem so far.
I'm using Valerie as the main theme, and Big Blu to fill in things that Valerie doesn't do.
Also, Ozone for center clock and QS 5.
Fontio works with a .ttf file (or choose one of the provided fonts) if you use the flashable zip option - in the settings there's a place to create a restore zip, so do that first in case. Both files will be put on your internal memory in a Fontio folder.
edit: I forgot that the power menu doesn't work with this setup, so I made my own with Tasker/GMD.

Stock has the same substratum support as freedom Os... It's the legacy layers theming, so if you root stock, it will work the same way. Just install the substratum app from the store and try out. ?
