OK, OK, I know the "issues" folks are having with the HD have been done to death, but I just wanted to add my two penneth to the mix.
My story is unremarkable in that I've bought a HD last week as a replacement for a Kaiser (which went pop and is with HTC for repair as I type), and despite all the glitz and snazz of the huge screen, the slim form, etc, I'm rather missing my 18 month old Kaiser.
The lack of a physical keyboard is the biggest thing I'm struggling to adjust to, which might not be so bad if the software one worked properly. And the number of times the device restarts itself at the most inopportune moment would be frankly laughable if it werent so annoying.
So, I called the retailer and told them of the problems with it restarting itself (8 times yesterday - when texting, when prowsing the web, when reading a Word doc attachment, and numerous times when doing sod all but sitting on my desk!), and they offered to exchange it for me....... except they havent got any in stock!
So, to the crux of my post.... do I insist that the device is not fit for purpose and demand that my deal and airtime agreement is cancelled (I've not put the supplied SIM card in yet so I'm within my rights to cancel, it seems), and wait it out for a Touch Pro2? Or am I just a swapped handset away from Touch HD nirvana?
Your opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated!
All I can say is you may have a dodgy device as mine has never reset itself in the way you describe...
And you can get used to the on-screen keyboard (well I did anyway) pretty fast.. have a play with the different keyboard options. I use the "phone keypad" in T9 mode and am much faster than with the full Qwerty one.

I would honestly have to say... wait for the Touch Pro2. It isn't that far away and you can just use a cheap cell untill that time (I could! ). If your struggling with the onscreen keyboard then the Touch Pro2 will be perfect for you, but still offering a screen size almost like the HD.
I have 1 year to go on my contract so! . But the problems you talked about are not normal, and if you decide not to wait for the Touch Pro2 I would swap it with a other one or file it for repair if you can't swap.
buy an iphone....the touch hd could have blown the iphone out of the water if ALL the specs & progs had been implemented on release.....
Trouble is HTC are now playing catch up and are releasing kit onto the mass market who in turn are really 'beta' testing hardware & software for HTC.
I used their contact helpline to notify them of a bug/glitch which many other users have as well & I asked for a resolution, bugFIX or update to sort the problem out - I actually got the official reply which basicially said thanks and my raised call was now now closed as I hadn't answered/replied within 15 days.....!!!! I replied the same day fgs !!!
I presume they have massive problems that can't be fixed and do not have any support in place whatsoever, so user & buyer beware - they are buying an unsupported bit of kit - I am now stuck in an 18 month contract with hardware (& software) that is buggy, unsupported, doesn't work properly, and has NO way of being sorted or fixed.........
I've been with wm smartphones from the beginning & HTC when they got 'big'
- now I've got a problem getting out of the contract even though the htc hd IS FAULTY & BUGGY - what a rip off......

I don't understand how you guys buy a phone on a contract and blast the manufacturer (HTC in this case) for having a faulty, buggy phone.
maybe its because you guys don't have the foresight to see that the phones have operator supported apps and crap that isn't part of the original HTC rom.
operators put there own software on to these phones in order to link to their online homepages , etc. My HD came from Telstra and the first thing I did was remove that junk from the phone.
I don't know if you guys want to format your HTC and install fresh software on it, but one things for sure that you can't pass judgment on a product that has useless software put on it by the operator.
This forum is filled with countless happy HD users that continue to mod, upgrade their phones without such problems.
Try giving your phone a second chance by putting software that it was meant to run and not some third party crap.
It does sound like you receivd a bad phone. Every manufacturer has them cross their lineup (Apple too) as no production run is perfect.
Personally I have had my HD for a number of months now and I am not overly gentle with it or to concerned about what software I load. I have never had any of the issues described here (from crashing to paint peeling).
I easily using the compact qwerty keyboard and can type faster on it than on the Kaiser. You will need to decide if you can make the adjustment. I had the same issue in moving from the Wizard to the Elf.
Totally your call. I was used to my hermes keyboard and decoded to go for the HD. At first I was disappointed with a number of things...i.e. no keyboard, no camera flash amongst others. But I knew this before I bought it!!!
It was the same with my Hermes. I got rid of the crap software, rom etc and flashed a better rom, better software and hey presto I had a better phone.
I have also done this with the Balckstone and I'm glad to say I have almost got it to exactly the way I want it!!
There is plenty of 3rd party apps out there to improve your phone, one for example would be finger keyboard 2.1 which almost as good as having a qwerty keyboard.
In the end mate, its your call.
It's your choice but:
I had to send my first one back cos I couldn't get a signal. Orange replaced it no questions and since then I haven't had to reset at all (bout 4 weeks now).
All in all i'm happy with the device and have it running reasonably well with the stock rom with the help of all the people on here. Video, once converted, is superb and high quality for such a device, call quality good, not really tried the camera as I don't take that many pics but office runs fine as I use most of the apps.
Hmmm, sounds like you have a duff phone. Send it back.
I also had a Kaiser which was good but the HD is so much better. I have NEVER had a soft reset unexpectedly.
I do not type huge amounts so the keyboard is not a big need. I do want the slim form factor of the HD.
I had for a few days an early Omnia - this did the mystery soft reset nonsense many times in the short time I had it. I returned it and bought a Tytn II.
HD is really robust, great screen, good battery, and very stable. I recommend you return the bad one you have.
Seriously buddy, I use the Phone Keypad option under SIP and it takes me way back to my old Nokia, I've gone from pissing around with a stupid slide out keyboard on my Kaiser which involved a lot of attention, to walking along touch typing on my Touch HD, the differnece is massive. Slide out keyboards sound like a good idea until you're sitting there interfacing with it like a fecking laptop, that pissed me off.
I must admit I wasn't very impressed with mine when I first got it. I copied some MP3s over to test out music playing and it crashed, and kept crashing. And everything kept crashing: phone app, mail app, music app... Not impressive in the first half hour with nothing else installed!
Anyway since flashing to a different ROM (Dutty 2.6 at the moment) I have had absolutely no problem, so god knows what Orange have done to their ROM.
As for keyboard, try fingerkeyboard and SPB's Keyboard. I can type about as fast as I ever did on my Tytn 2's real keyboard - and without the extra bulk!
(I think I've said before, my Tytn never crashed or needed an unforced reboot once as far as I can recall in 18 months; both my ipods crash regularly, one of them, daily. My conclusion is that the WinMo platform is pretty stable.)
Don't know who your operator is but try and get it changed.
Sorry to hear about your HD problems, like you I was eager to upgrade to what I thinks is a great phone, I got mine as an upgrade but fortunately mine does not have a provider rom in it, its a straight htc phone. had mine 18 days and it stopped charging. Contacted my supplier they where happy to exchange but had no stock, or i could cancell and send phone back.
I contacted HTC, they arranged pickup of phone, did repair, well no they basically replaced everything in the case and sent it back all within 5 days.
Now my phone works great, and the more I read about how adaptable this phone is the more I like it.
as for keybords i have downloaded and tried many, but I now use touchpal compact keyboard, even my large stuby thumbs mange to type quickly.
Send it back get a good one and start again I am sure you will not be dissapointed.
and while I think about it did you now that HTC phones have a manufactures warranty of two years? that means my phone is warranted past my contract period, good news........
I've noticed recently that the HD2 forum is becoming inundated with hardware problem threads. While this is obviously one of the functions of the Q&A forum, it does give an unbalanced view of whether or not the HD2 is riddled with problems, and some people are just assuming that the device is problematic. Since no-one is going to post a thread that says "My HD2 has no hardware problems", I decided to make a thread where we could try and get a more balanced view.
Please try and refrain from saying you have hardware issues if it's really a software issue as the whole purpose of this thread is to try and get a real ratio of people with hardware problems against people with no problems. Also, PLEASE don't include accidental damage as hardware failures!
Feel free to discuss, but if you view this thread then please vote one way or another.
Thanks
Edit: At the moment there's been 179 views and only 23 votes. PLEASE do the poll above if you visit the thread. Thanks.
Yes, I sent mine back to HTC, and the problem was the whole antenna was broken,
There is a more indepth poll * HERE *
Not only does it try to find out the relative amount of hardware failures, it also is trying to determine if it is primarily the 1024 or 512 LEOs and if the reset button (presumably a bath issue) has a contributing factor.
Maybe if a 'non-touchscreen' and a 'stuck at bootup' threads were fixed at the top of this board, this would stop folks creating new threads and have just one place to look. Maybe even the initial poster creating a step by step fault diagnosis guide - which could be amended as different symptoms appear.

Thanks a lot. That's a different poll completely and I'm aware of it, having voted myself. If you disagree with the reason for this poll then simply stay out of it.
Thanks
I have no problem with the poll, and have voted.
I do understand the reason for it. If I was going to buy an HD2 for the first time and did my research then I would surely ended up here. With all the faulty this and that and not booting up postings, I would doubt that I would buy the phone. But viewing this site, since I got a brand new T-Mobile Compact III (UK), I knew that loads of faults got reported but that was minute in comparison to the numbers that were busy away flashing their phones.
The only fault I have had with an HTC phone was my Compact IV (Diamond) and that was the USB not being able to communicate, but I suspect that was due to a surge when it was charging from a rental car when the car started up.
No problems with mine owned it since march 2010, I would say it is clearly
my favourite phone.
No Problem with both Phones.
1st HD2: February 2010
2nd HD2: August 2010
also the display bright is on both phones still the same...
I bought my HD2 late 2009, out of one of the first shipments my dealer received.
In the meantime, I flashed a gazillion times, WinMo, Android, WP7... the only thing I changed was the memory card.
Also, since summer 2010, I preferred Photon style usage, means I started to use the hardware buttons extensively. No problems at all.
In the sum, my device is a real workhorse... properly fed thanks to xda.
Not really, I just have a bit of backlight bleeding.
I've had my HD2 since november 09 and im happy to say I haven't had a single issue........ yet lol
Hardware problem
I got my Hd2 in March 2010. I sent it in for repairs two weeks ago. I have just got it back. They replaced the motherboard.
Seems to be working fine now.
I've had my 512MB Leo since May 2010. So far so good. I wish i could say that same about the headset but i guess it could have been worse.
Phone was bought in June of 2010, and I brought it to a repair service here last Friday as the digitizer gave up on me unfortunately. Now I can only hope it will be returned soon
According to the poll I created here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925673) so far there seems to be no correlation on 1024 or 512 Leo, the color of the reset button, and hardware failure.
Maybe all of these are coming up now as most of us got the HD2 back in March, and its coming up to a year for a straight swap (well some operators are doing that)
My phone became faulty back in the summer and i just lived with it for a while, maybe other have being doing the same.
I have a mainboard issue, affects the screen and cuts out completely now and then

I've been watching that, and all you can tell for sure so far is that 2 people either don't know the difference between red and yellow, or they think their T-Mobile device isn't T-Mobile at all!
Good Idea this Poll.
Certainly for new users/future users who will buy one.
But honestly, I must say the HD2 is as far I know one of the best device. But like every electronic device there is a march of issues. Most of the devices will works well and correctly, some not.
But we can alway's ask us the question; Where started the problem!? A construction/fabric Error on the device ore a wrong manipulation of the user!?
I'm sure if people would read more the manual, ..... well we all knows what than.
i have a dead (bricked?) HD2 in hand right now;
i just can't flash it pass 8%; and it vibrates 4-5 times when it reaches 8% and then it gets stuck there.
i tried both USB flash and SD flash with stock and custom ROMs but none work so far;
need help btw.
thanks

I made it multiple choice in case people had multiple devices which often is the case.
2 hd2
i have two hd2's both have had the screens replaced and one has had the internal speaker replaced.
i notice these phones seems to have bad life for the screens according to all the people having touch screens die.
and when i call htc they don't really ask any questions about it, I'm assuming they know its a problem.
Hello,
I previously owned a Oneplus One. It was a great device despite the bugs, i enjoyed it until i had enough and sold it.
Iv'e had the touch screen problems which required sending it back to the manufacturer for fixing.
After it came back okay, started the mic problems. I decided to sell it before it's value drops any more, and buy instead an LG\Samsung flagship.
After wondering about it i decided that maybe i should buy the Oneplus Two. it seems like a great device, though im afraid it will be great at first, then it will show some major and annoying bugs aswell.
So i wanted to ask - which known bugs\common problems i might occur with the oneplus two? for example i heard for some people the home button+fingerprint sensor stops working.
Thanks in advance for your kind answers
this was today conversation ,,,the results of what you read is just a sorry and have a nice weekend
We are sorry that you seem to be unsatisfied with the speed of us rolling out updates. The reason for that is, that we want to make sure that our update is flawless. Releasing updates too quickly always carries the risk that the update itself makes problems. Please give us time to do our update properly before deciding to avoid ELEPHONE in the future. We are sure the waiting will be worth it.
Have a nice weekend

since you are the service time ,i must say that i have a bug with the keyboards ,on letter p and l sometimes when i press them its closes the keyboard
-Elephone Service
Dear ......, have you tried with other keyboards? I can recommend to you the SwiftKey or the Gboard keyboard. Those are great keyboards.
-me
seriously you are the servise of the elephone and you dont know that the gboard is the default ?tried the swift and the apachi keyboard ,all the same on p and l ,,,and telling cuistomer to try another keyboard is not a solution sorry ,,,
why dont you provide the source ,so some developers like xda can make a custom rom ,tha is fully fuctional ?
-Elephone Service
Dear
Yes, we are the service of ELEPHONE. We are sorry you still face the problem with the keyboard. Of course we want to help you out as fast as possible. Therefore we recommended those keyboards to rule out other reasons that might cause the problem beforehand. If you're still facing issues, please perform a factory reset on your phone. Please backup all your data first so you don't loose anything. Factory reset is a safe procedure when you have everything backed up, including the 2FA applications you might have stored on your phone, photos, contacts and everything else. If you need any further assistence, please contact [email protected]. Please understand, that we cannot give assistance on how to install custom ROMs, as they are third party software. They can brick your phone and we don't bear responsibility for that.
Again, we are sorry we couldn't resolve your problem

hahah what ever ,,,i said just provide the source , so the cm make a custom rom for this rom ,if i brick it ,you should be the last one to blame ,i had over 50 phones in the past ,and all had custom roms ,and they were working perfect ,i just can understand why is so big deal to provide the source ,so a cyanomod gcould be build ,instead of leaving so many customers with a faulty rom ,and with no update ,,,there are a lot of custom rom builder that they can fix the issues in one week ,,just give the source ,,thats nice to get 230 euros from a customer and say to him that we are sorry that we cant solve the issue you have with one of our devices ?but thank you for the 230 euros ,,hahahha,
and its not only me facing problems
a lot of customers of s8
and its all software build problems
Just want to know about Elephone S8 4G
Are you using this? if yes then could suggest that one for me? as I want to try out a different smartphone, not so notable one but equally good.
im the one in a milion mate ,for me doesnt worth to pay the 2k screen ,and not have others, but you should ask others to
@nasios In my opinion you're quite rude to whoever was helping you. It's not their job, and is definitely not a guarantee, that they (or any other device manufacturer) will provide their sources. As far as the updates go, their answer sounded pretty darn reasonable. Why get an update ASAP fixing a few bugs, but in the long run giving you even more new ones, instead of waiting for a stable update that actually fixes the issues..? Personally I wouldn't suggest anyone base their choice off of your comment(s).
*I was told this phone will not receive Android 8.0 Oreo, but within the next week it will receive an update fixing known bugs.

I'd be more prompt to take you seriously if you reported actual issues and day to day use performance rather than petty complaints over lack of support over something almost no company would support (custom roms).. Not here for a fight, no need to get upset over my response. But rather, give some explanation and user experience for me. Maybe mine will be better, maybe not. I know what I paid for is all, I'm not expecting it to work with my carrier, I'm aware of the bugged camera, and I'm aware of their lack of support. Anything you'd like to add to it that's legitimate given the price? Thanks

i guess me and many other users that report bugs and expect from tha company that gave 220 to get it ,are same as me ,,
and i paid less fot the other one ...and im happy ,and i dont care rather if a custom rom will come out ...
my user experience advice since you have prompt the other not to follow is sell the elephone and never again buy elephone ,,,

Thank you for going into a bit of detail about the issues you had. I'll keep those specifically in mind as I use mine, if they're present and unbearable I'll refund it, otherwise I'll keep it. I'm more after the screen and specs, the build looks lovely and I feel there's a lot of work arounds to many issues. Again, thanks.
I don't know if I am just suffering from correlation is not causation but I feel like the memory usage of the Pie rom was what just caused my phone to boot loop and then green screen. I just decided to use a Pie rom last week and despite seeing information in the threads saying there were issues with memory usage and other stuff I thought I would dive in. I loved the rom, it was working perfectly for 2 days and I enjoyed it. Then all of a sudden it just started having wifi disconnect issues, crackling speakers and finally one time when I was changing the volume on the phone it just BAM... restarted and got stuck at the google screen. I wasn't able to get back into recovery so I tried reflashing that using the BLOD method. That worked long enough to get a stock rom on the phone. I thought maybe I could just use my device like that but now it started going into a green screen and it wouldn't even power up. It did lead me to find information about getting my phone replaced. I think thats the only positive to come out of this for me. Obviously YMMV and flash at your own risk... but in 10 years of flashing I have never had an experience like this. Even with WM devices. I have kept an eye on both the Pie threads in Android Development and I see similar comments to my experience... I just suggest caution to people like me... who might only know what you are doing based on guides.
TLDR - I tried both the pie roms that were available. I decided on the PixelPie Rom. My phone started bootlooping withing 2 days. I think its the maxed memory usage.
Update: I just got an email that LG has fixed the board and they are mailing my phone back. I was afraid they were going to turn me down for one reason or another. I should get the phone in 2 days. I did personally speak with an LG rep over the phone about it since they were mailing me the same phone back. She said she would not be able to opt for me to receive a new phone because that is always based off the determination of the person repairing the phone. She said that if I ever have any more issues with the phone it will be covered by warranty since I am in the system. I would just have to mail the phone in and go through the same annoyance.
LG was nice enough to fix my phone... They also repaired the cracked screen free of charge. I am happy... I am sticking with stock. lol
As I know, there's a way to incrase your RAM sending motherboard to China (or just buying new from Ali) to install up to 4Gb. Can't precisely tell the prise, but something around $100. In some cases that can be a nice way to give your phone the second life.

Yeah, I paid around $100 for mine like a half year ago. Works very smoothly with Pie.
My phone started having more issues after the warranty time started running out. The screen isn't working right, the phone is freezing up all the time, its also giving me memory errors. luckily this happened within the 90 days of extended warranty they gave me. Will they ever just completely replace my phone? sigh... heh
