One of the best hidden features of the Nexus 5...
no need since there's no wireless charging
It's just so nice not needing to put a case or piece of metal on the back of the phone to use magnetic phone holders while driving....
Exactly what I'm doing with my Nexus 5 right now... does anyone has the answer?
Highly doubt it. The reason why it existed in the n5 was for the magnetic wireless charger. Without that, there was no reason for it

bumping this up, any new info?
It's possible there's enough ferromagnetic metal on the phone for those to still hold it.
Just tried it.
It is not magnetic.
any pnone with a steel back plate would be held by a magnet, really has nothing to do with the wireless charging. i have other phones with a plastic back that wireless charge.
this phone wont hold to a magnet because the back is aluminum, and aluminum is not magnetic.
A 5.7-inch, high-resolution WQHD AMOLED display and front-facing stereo speakers — all housed in a contoured aluminum body.

I believe the Nexus 5 only had 4 steel plates at the back and no magnets. The magnets were in the wireless charging pad which would hold on the the phone. Nexus 6p will not stick unfortunately.

Wondering if the Tetrax magnet will hold Nexus 4 at the back?

I have this for my Galaxy Nexus, but I had to stick a metal at the back. Because I want to use the wireless charging in the future, I don't think its a great idea to stick the small metal at the back of the phone.
I'm not sure if the Nexus 4 actually have enough (metal/something magnetic) on the back of the inside of the phone to stick on the magnet? Not sure anyone tried this. Because I dropped my Galaxy Nexus and cracked it(in Canada), I'm still waiting to order one!
I'm so use to using this stuff, its really hard to go back to using a car holder.
If anyone know if this one would stick to a magnet, please let me know! Thanks.
I have no familiarity with that product but I just took the strongest magnet off of my fridge (holding up a 1lb whiteboard on there so it's not "industrial" strength but it's not a super weak one either) and I could barely feel the pull between it and my N4. In fact, now that I've done this, I'm concerned that it will be very difficult for them to make the Orb hold this phone at an angle without it sliding off.
Based on this and what I know of that product, I wouldn't expect it to work. That said, I'm not sure how super powerful that magnet is so it's kinda hard to say for sure.
HTH
I think a solution would be to put the metal on a TPU case like the Rearth Ringke Slim and then if you don't want to use the case daily, just leave it magnetized to the Tetrax in your car. That way you just created a dock for yourself in the car to use, a case if you want to use it, and you can even put a NFC tag on the case so that whenever you "dock" it in your car, it activates whatever car mode features you want.

That's what I plan to do when my nexus arrives. I have my GNex set up this way with Incipio Feather case, but I don't leave it on the magnet.

I've tried this with the Nexus 4 and the metal plates some right off of the glass back when you try to mount it on the XWAY. I'm looking for a solution to this. I love the XWAY and used it for quite a while with my SGS2. It was great with that but the Nexus 4's glass back is so smooth anything you stick on it will come off fairly quickly.
I am in the same boat, the stupid metal won't stick at the back. I'm going to contact my friend at 3m to see if they have any other double side tape that would work, I don't want to use something too strong that I can't pull it back out and not break the back glass =(
Why not put a screen protector on the back and then the metal thing on that?
Let's you still see the back, and when you want to remove the metal thing, you won't have to worry about hurting the phone.

I'm thinking of getting one of the dBrad Black Carbon skins then sticking the XWAY plate on it. The reviews say it sticks really well to the Nexus 4's glass back.
http://dbrand.com/submodels/nexus-4
Although I might just take some super glue or something to assist the XWAY plate in adhering to the glass.

FYI - I took some super glue gel and glued the XWAY mount to the back of my Nexus 4, waited a couple hours for the glue to cure and it's working fine now. I figure I can always take a razor blade and scrape it all off sometime if the future since it's glass, after all. I can't say if it will work long term, it's stuck on there good and tight now. Cheers!
The metal plate slips off the back of my N4 too. I contacted Tetrax with no reply. So much for that.
any update for this? it seems that on website Nexus4 is supported:

i'm wondering if it's a special metal pin with special glue or it's the standard one

After getting it, i can assume that an 1mm sylicone case between magnet and chip on phone wont be stable, not strongh enough.
Btw, even Glue (superglue 3 universale) had some troubles to hold chip on phone (Our nexus is too smart to be glued^^).
I have seen some magnets that attach to the case of a phone then connect to a metal plate on the car or one that connects to the vents of the car. Does anyone make one strong enough to securely hold the Nexus 4 with a heavy duty case?

Can you tell me the diameter of the circle that goes onto the back of the phone? The case I have for my Nexus 4 has circles on the back of it where the silicone skin sticks through.

I can't remember the exact sizes, but when I bought mine, it came with a few different-sized metal tabs, so you'd have a small variety to choose from.

Thanks for the excellent info. I ended up ordering the Xway, a single button to stick somewhere else, and I found an accessory pack with 6 more sticky magnets to place around!
I really need to stop buying stuff for my phone, but I swear it's addicting! :victory:

Yes, it looks like it sticks on with adhesive to the back of the phone.
Yes that is exactly how it works. The adhesive does not work on some cases so I have sometimes used crazy glue. I've tried a lot of systems for in car mounting and this is by far the best in my opinion.

X-Way is great for using vents as your mounting point, but if you want to mount it ANYWHERE you want, then get the FIX-WAY.
I have something simple and a lot cheaper, you might want to consider.
Cellet Magnetic Holder
Here's a youtube video which might explain it better:

I can attest that the magnet is extremely strong. The phone will not move at all through any bumps when driving. You stick the magnet to the back of your Nexus 4. I never took off the protective back skin that came with the nexus, so I didn't mind sticking the magnet to the back of the phone. On top of that I use the Diztronic protective case covering the back of the phone. Since that case covers the entire back of the phone, it covers the magnet and you can't even tell I have the magnet on at all. the magnet still works great through the protective case and still extremely strong.

From the reviews it is larger, but stronger maybe. I ordered one in case I can use them together or the other one is not strong enough.
I built a magnetic car dock for the nexus4 that I'm now selling.

Here's a video of one of the prototypes showing how it works. The production version works the same except the magnet is stronger and it has cutouts for headphones, mic, camera, and speaker.

Does anyone know if applying the magnet directly to the back of the phone, will that STOP NFC from working?
I like the magnet idea but the location would disable inductive charging as well

The magnet does not but the metal plate on the back of the phone does break nfc. Check out this review by an n4 user:

There is a metal plate at the back of the phone or underneath the case....not a magnet...
Metal may have a better effect on inductive charging....rather than hampering it...but this is just my guess...it may disable inductive charging as well....

Everyone in my family has one. it's awesome
So since the Nexus 4 doesn't slide right off the wireless charging orb at the angle it's on, it obviously either has magnets inside it or at least a metal plate of some sort, right?
I was thinking about pulling one of the plastic pieces off my dashboard, installing a relatively powerful magnet on the inside, popping it back on and just sticking the Nexus 4 to it to use as a mount. (I am aware it wouldn't charge wirelessly, that's ok)
Would that work? Or is there any reason this might be a bad idea? I just want to make sure a regular old magnet isn't going to damage it or something.
Thanks!

It can be a little annoying... I learned that they absolutely will not stack straight because of the magnets, they all offset from the one below by half an inch or so.
Learned this after we got 4 of them in to work for testing/development. I was a little perplexed at first, then I took a back off and saw all the magnets.
Mine could really do with stronger magnets, my official 'magic' cover isn't so 'magic' :s It slides off pretty easily. It's not the cover itself either, it attaches pretty strongly to other ferrous materials so sadly it seems to be the tablet itself that's lacking.

I don't have the official magic cover. I just got the hotcool cheapo one and felt the same way. I just placed two neodymium magnets on the cover thinking i could use it to hold business cards and other important docs while in a pinch. Call it a mind trick since I don't know the property of magnets too well, but it appears the case holds on tighter when I did that.

My Nexus 9 has a magnetic border too.It sticks to parts of my laptop , OTG converter , USB Flash Drive, screws , paper clips and anything metal. I thought it was something with mine but it seems to be normal (but annoying). How can we fix this
Mine is magnetic too
Life is poker, risk being happy
It's magnetic by design. The boarder on the Nexus 9 is magnetic to support how both the Magic Cover and official folio keyboard work with it.
Hello, folks.
I've been a big fan of magnet car dock since Nexus 5 had magnets on its back. As I've been using LG G3, OnePlus One, and Note 4 (N910T and N910S), I attached magnet on its battery (or back) cover to use my phones with the magnet dock. Unfortunately, it seems there would be no way to remove back panel for Moto X Pure Edition unless teardown major components.
Would there be any ideas or thoughts where should I attach a magnet plate? (I don't usually put my phone into any sort of protective cases.)
Thanks.

Sounds like you'll either have to compromise and get a case (there are pretty low profile ones around), attach the magnet to the back and deal with the aesthetics, or move away from magnets for this particular phone. I can't really think of any other options... besides that maybe once people have some time with it they'll figure out how to open the back without breaking anything and make a tutorial...
