Either officially or unofficially as a ROM?
Has there been any hints of it?
I would imagine so it will get it offically
It's possible (though I'm not holding my breath lol)
Look at the S2.......
It started out with Gingerbread, got an update to Icecream Sandwich, and then got Jellybean......
The S5 started with KitKat and got updated to Lollipop......I reckon there (might) still be a possibility of one more upgrade.........
(Unless Samsung has got all savvy/greedy and thinks that we will buy the latest flagship if they don't upgrade the S5 anymore)......

you're right but between 2.3.x and 4.1.x Samsung didn't released any new phones. S2 was released in 1st quarter 2011 and S3 in 2nd quarter 2012. Currently Samsung releases new phones more often and from economic point of view, S5 is old model, now Samsung is working on S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note 5, Note 4, Alpha.
I don't expect official Android m 6.0 update. Update to 5.1.x will end support for S5 definitely (that's my opinion).
In S2/S3 times Samsung didn't have so many phones and tablets like today..
T-Mobile has confirmed Marshmallow will come to SG5!
even if we don't get stock Marshmallow, we still will most likely get the CM version of it, so I guess its something
It doesn't look like the official update is coming for the S5, Samsung is yet to issue the reason behind Galaxy S5 completely skipping this major update.

Well, my question is pretty much in the topic...
A collegue got 4.4.4 for his old GT-i9305N (international) today, and I find it odd that such a old device would get the latest Android bugfix release.
However, I understand that the S5 may get Android L directly, skipping 4.4.4 all together.
Then again, 4.4.4 is out on some carriers in the USA, so it should be easy to release it internationally - or am I wrong?
I understand no one really has an answer, but what is the general thoughts on this?
SPECULATION: The older devices that got 4.4.4, it probably indicates that it is one of the last update they will get. As for the S5, we'll likely see a direct jump to L.

The S3 isn't an old device. Especially the S3 LTE which is a premium variant of the S3. I had a Galaxy S2 LTE Skyrocket, it was released Fall 2011, and the last update it got was February/March 2013 JB 4.1.2 . Samsung supports their high-end devices for 1 and a half to 2 years.

Speculation.. we will get Samsung Android L mid to late spring 2015.
Samsung has released Android Lollipop 5.0.1 today, first in Poland (SM-910C). Samsung seems to be using Poland as a test ground, hoping users will bring up bugs and battery life problems so Samsung may release a fixed and near perfect software to the widespread community. Now, it's a waiting game until it reaches OTA for Verizon Customers. Reaching root may be difficult on Lollipop 5.0.1, even impossible as far as we know. Besides the fact and enjoyment of root, stock TouchWiz incorporated into Lollipop on the Note 4 will be by far the best OS of and across all Android devices.
Near perfect? You sound very optimistic. Best os across all android platforms? You sound very very optimistic. But I do hope you are right.
I have been surprised on how much I have not missed Root. I just came from the S4 MDK and had CM12 on it. Really do miss Lollipop, but I really do love this phone. Sad to say though, with Verizon it maybe 6 months before we see Lollipop.
I think we'll get Lollipop before mid-March. VZW got it out very quickly for the S5 so I believe that they are working on it now.

What a terrible thread title, you made it sound like there was a release posted here. In any case there's already a lollipop waiting thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/lolipop-jan-15-t2989509

If Samsung did get lollipop on the retail N4 soon and it was rootable I would actually use my upgrade and get the N4. Currently still using a rooted N3 and honestly very happy with it, but the temptation for a rooted N4 with lollipop would probably be too much.

I moved to the N4 from the S4 MDK with CM12 also. I thought Id miss root a LOT more than I do. Really the ONLY things Im missing though are viper4android audio, and full mSD read/write access. Cant wait to see Lollipop on my Note4. And hopefully that root.

I use SoundFX as my sound FX and equalizer for apps which support it. Try it out
I just hope they have de-touchwizzed it a bit so we can enjoy all the bliss of Lollipop. If nothing else add a AOSP theme in the settings. Give us the option. I think Samy would sale a lot more phones if they gave the users a theme option. I don't see it happening though.

I read on the S5 forum that viper no longer works with 5.0 lollipop due to the linux kernel being enforcing along with some other policies. Plus development for viper has stopped.

well, i had already known that... with too many issue from 4.4.x and their issues with the S6 and other lolly poop issues, i expect august plus or minus a month. i hope it works better than kit kak, so i can replace the updated tablet's 4.4.2 with 5.0 and sell it for a profet.
I love meterial design. Hope this release will out soon
I had saw the usual sites saying it was coming but that was way back last year and hadn't seen any new info recently so I figured it was squashed. With all Samsung's phones getting updated now, I would assume shortly after summer too.
Yea, this device came out in April 2013. It is now May 2015, well outside the 18 month support window. Keep dreaming guys, ain't gonna happen.

Correct, but official Samsung Denmark said it will get, but depends on region by region. Also heard Note II won't be getting it, but Samsung Korea said it will be getting lollipop (depends which version of Note II).
so it is really hard to say if it is getting it or not, but I still have some hope, it may see lollipop.
Talking about CM 12.2 nightlies, it is buggy and its ugly, but that's personal preference of course.

Even if some region cant get lollipop, just flash the one that get it lel .
dont even talk about cm12.1, so many bug even at application level there's something unresolved yet. not to mention the screen glitch, camera & call. the worst part, sleep animation.
It would be great if they could get the official Lollipop release to our tablets, however the CM versions are pretty decent at the moment.
Except netflix doesn't work on any of them

Looks like Galaxy Note 2 will be getting Lollipop, if you think that, this device is released in October 2012, and our Note 8.0 released around April 2013, this may give us a little hope that our device may see lollipop, of course we never be sure for 100%, but at least there's still a little bit hope...

I asked that question on the ATT Community forum and was told that the Note 3 and the S4 are not on the upgrade list. Meanwhile the much older Galaxy Nexus (2012?) is getting Marshmallow I heard today.

Actually the Galaxy Nexus did not come up on the ATT forum thread. It was pointed out that the Note 3 and the S4 (unlike the S5 and newer) would never see 5.1.1 . I was hoping to get better battery life with the 5.1.1 upgrade. I actually ordered the Nexus 6P twice then cancelled the order twice but I am definitely attracted to the idea of fast updates and long-lasting eligibility for upgrades offered by owning a Nexus device.

It seems like they are not interested in doing such thing yet, as far now the Samsung has issued a roadmap of the devices receiving or expected to receive Marshmallow update in near future and unfortunately Our beloved Galaxy Note 3 is not in the list. See this http://www.gsmarena.com/alleged_samsung_marshmallow_update_roadmap_leaks-news-15023.php
The Note 3 has been sunseted. Meaning no more updates. They were never going to release any updates above 5.0. on the Note 3.
The sad thing is because of this, I am done with buying another Samsung phone or tablet!
I just read they have sent 5.0 out to the note 3. You can also manually download and install through odin.

Hi,
Samsung Galaxy S5 is officially dead now? I mean software side. Where is the S5's Official Nougat update?
Samsung Galaxy S5 released 2014 April and it took last big update in 2016 March. 1 year 11 month official OS update support time.
Competitor's introduced phone at the same time still receiving OS updates.
Samsung Galaxy S5 users dont you feel worthless?
If samsung did this to me I would never buy Samsung again. Because I know the value of my money. Samsung just force you to replace your phone due to lack of updates. It's a cheap trick for a make profit.
Samsung Galaxy S6 will probably also stay on Android 7.0
Samsung Galaxy S7 will probably also stay on Android 8.0
Samsung Galaxy S8 will probably also stay on Android 9.0
Samsung Galaxy S series users what do you think about that?
Its not a good strategy for a create loyal buyers. That strategy creates own haters.

rooted, twrp'd and ROM'd, dont feel worthless at all as i havent got OTA's since the 4th day of owning this device, and that was 3 years ago
that and the problem with the S5 is that that there are over a dozen version of it and they all have their own specific quirks that Samsung would have to allow for
Why the hate? And why ask that question on xda? xda users don't tend to rely on 'official' updates anyway. I rooted my S5, used CWM and flashed CM12 (or whatever it was then) the second day I owned my S5. I now have Lineage 14.1, SIM unlocked 32gb µSD card, it is working like a pro! I don't plan to get a newer phone anytime soon.
