I've been reading about the text-to-speech entry method for the Nexus One. Speech recognition is a great idea, but very difficult to accomplish.
I've always steered clear of devices without a physical keyboard, which is why (being on T-mobile) I have stuck thus far with my trusty G1.
However, this feature on the Nexus One has gotten me thinking about what it would take to get me to go with a device that does not have a physical keyboard, and I think I know what would do it.
I'd like a true "voice keyboard". I don't want the device to try to figure out whether I'm saying there, their or they're, I'd like it to let me spell, just as I would with the keyboard, with my voice.
Option A would still be prone to errors but still be much more accurate than full speech recognition, and would just allow me to try to spell what I am saying--I would simply say the letters "H-E-L-L-O-Space-W-O-R-L-D-Period" out loud.
Option B would require some memorization, but would allow for nearly perfect accuracy, by spelling your entry with the phonetic alphabet. The above would be spoken as "Hotel-Echo-Lima-Lima-Oscar-Space-Whiskey-Oscar-Romeo-Lima-Delta-Period".
I'd presume that the system would by default attempt to auto-capitalize as it does now, "Shift", "Shiftlock" and "Unshift" could be used as commands as well.
Any thoughts? Has it already been done? I'd be awfully close to putting a Nexus One on my belt if I could enter text this way.
That's an interesting idea. The nexus one does that for punctuation marks, if you say "question mark" the output is "?" instead of spelling out the words 'question mark'.
Though I still see 'option a' being prone to errors with letters that sound alike, such as "B/D/E/...". As for option b i personally think it would just be too time consuming to write a couple of sentences and it would probably be much faster to just type it on a virtual keyboard (including all the time lost correcting mis-touches). But anyway it would be nice if a 3rd party vk implemented the idea..

This device is slowly racking up the checkmarks that have me miss my iphone less and less.
The htc_ime keyboard was a huge one...many other gems have just about sealed the deal. The functionality has just about overwhelmed the usability advantage of the iphone (which it had to do!).
My big issue is copy paste feature....which i needed extensively on the iphone.
Specifically the ability to copy a whole page.....not the page url, but whole page...images and all.
Unless I'm really losing it, the N1 one is incapable of it.
Wondering if rooted, this function exists.
I appreciate any responses.

Most apps allow copy and paste. Try doing a long-press on the text and look for "select text" then select the text using the trackball. Pressing the trackball will automatically copy the text.
Then you can paste in most text fields with a similar long-press and "paste"

I have been using my finger ala iphone to acccess the text and try to move it down but it only gets a small amount of text.

Why all the bad press for Android and the Nexus?
I don't really understand. Granted, the guy is obviously an Apple fanboy, but, there are a lot of negative reviews out there. No multi-touch? Give me a break.

while android OS may not have some of the features of iphone OS, and yes the controls are definatly not as streamlined as iPhone, Android OS can do many, many things iPhone users can only dream of (ESPECIALLY if your iPhone is not jailbroken).
The iPhone OS, while being very intuitive and streamlined, feels like it was made for children. Everything you do in the iPhone OS is linear and controlled. This even goes for the App store, where Apple controls what apps can and cannot be distributed through the Appstore with an iron fist. If iPhone OS is your home, Apple is your strict dad.
Android on the other hand is much more lenient. On the Nexus One, they even give you the option to "jailbreak" (root) your phone out of the box! All you need to do is type in one simple 3 word command from your PC's command prompt.
Also, most of the apps on the iPhone appstore are garbage. Sure there may be over 100,000 apps to download, but 80% of them are useless iBeer/Flashlight apps, dumbed down games, or broken applications the so called devs cooked together to make a quick $0.99 off anyone who is eager to spend their money on something that looks cool on the description.
Dolphin browser has a "read it later" option.
Don't know if that counts.
Have NO idea what sixcoronas or melkers sic posts have to do with my question which is simply is there a way to cut and paste and entire intact page...not an url of the page....which, I said, is done really well on the iphone, gasp! (must be a really inflammatory thing to say for some reason).
Anyway, Couldnt do it with the trackball.

Just curious as to why you would need this feature... perhaps there is a better way to accomplish what you're trying to do, without having to copy/paste?
You could try Any Web Copy from the market or some kind or screenshot app if you don't need to manipulate the text.
I was lucky enough to get this keyboard free from Amazon, but knowing how good it is, I would easily pay for it now if I had to:

This keyboard does everything, and I have found it to be the most accurate, (in portrait at least cos' I don't use in landscape), that I have tried with my fat fingering!
I see there are posts about it in other phone forums, but didn't see any for Atrix, so thought I'd make people aware of it.

still has some problems..
like not being able to swipe .com or .edu etc.
how sometimes the word i swipe isn't right and I don't want to completely delete the whole word when I backspace.
the delay on pressing a button when you hold your finger there to get numbers or ! and ? etc. take too long.
it's a great alternative to swype though. :] glad I got it off amazon too

I had a lot of fun playing 'nemo picross' with a very tiny grid, and drawing with the stylus. Really nice.

Its an S pen. Not a stylus. Stylus is what was used with old resistive touch screens.

Ehh, no.
It is a stylus as is a wacom pen that always have been called stylus or wacom pens.

Any other awesome shmups on the Android? Unfortunately Cave went to the iOS
I haven't found any fun use for the stylus until you mentioned shmups. I am now a very happy camper.
EDIT: Already am 220th in the country. Its a grazing shmup.

i havent found an as useful stylus app... but maby anywhere out there is an better one???
I prefer Jotter (For Galaxy Note) for the following reasons:
-option for palm rejection
-option to disable back key
-just one tap on a widget to start writing

freenote - the handwrite/freehand mode lets you put much more text on the screen
LectureNotes - Good note taking app
SketchBookMobile - Basically photoshop for the Note
OmniSketch - Cool sketching app
Pretty sure they're all available as free/paid versions, I bought all 3.
how about the xda galaxy note forum page as the best stylus demo
the demo is - that all frustration is lost with this phone, including having to zoom up just to hit a link or read text and miss hit the link anyway. So I have 3 demos I show all the time - really this is one:
I have a url ready to go of a dense page of the XDA forum with small text and many pages of comments, and I show how with my stylus how perfect and fast I can hit on even the supper small next of an author or the next or number page buttons perfectly ( on the bottom right of the page). I explain how I can do this while walking and never miss any hyperlink or button again. demo 1
I then have a pressure sensitive demo with zen brush all set up, where I go into a great picture already made ( already they are impressed) and I have purposely made room available at the bottom to make a very light to very hard brush strokes, where the different levels of pressure sensitivity show up by seeing the very very thin to very very think brush strokes - people go wild. it takes pracitse to do the very light especially with a screen protector. demo 2
last I have a smemo page ready to go with 3 lines of text I already wrote out in freehand (' buy more potatoes' is one of the lines). I have enough room to add another line and usually write "do it now" ( easy and I never mess it up). Then I hit the 'handwriting to text' button and get perfect text ( which I already knew would work). now folks with mouth open. demo 3
I also mentioned that this is approximately what apple would call a retina display, this is the only retina display with a full wacom tablet underneath it.
additional non stylus demo
The vlingo dead accurate speech recognition is actually the most successful demo to freak them out. I have it ready to go, say 'Hi Galaxy' , say Play "Let it be" and the music starts, I then either say dial the persons phone number and wait for their phone to ring, or 'say gmail' in which I show them swype ( many folks seemed to have no clue about swype) and then hit the mic and dictate alot of email. all perfect.
Lastly I have a HD movie, of nature from youttube downloaded on my device (called Best of HD movies: water/wasser) to show the beautiful screen.
I also show I can use it with one hand, put it my pocket and put it up to my ear. I mention the phone is a game changer and if Apple came out with it the world would be going crazy. and Smile.
ps - google 'gesture search' app (always a shortcut on my front page) impresses folks too, when they see I can call anyone, play any music, open any app in one or two swipes.

I really like being able to combine handwriting, text and drawing all really easily.
Still trying to work out which handwriting mode works best for me (I think 2 cell - as long as I keep my writing in a straight line so words split over the 2 halves of the page don't end up looking wonky). And still tweaking the recognition timing thresholds, but definitely my favourite so far.
The limit to the amount you could fit in sMemo is way to small to be useful for anything more than post it note type notes.
Freenote will be useful for taking notes in just about any situation.

Don't think it works as a standalone app. For work we have it running on a server, and staff use the client software on their handheld devices.

I couldn't find LecureNotes in the Market on my phone (tried searching for Acadoid, and also tried changing my region using Market Enabler too). I could find it on my web browser on my PC, but when I try to install it via the web, it says it's not compatible with my Galaxy Note and won't let me proceed.

I did try out Handrite, Fliq, Genial Writing and sMemo.
For me, the handwriting entry process works best in freenote.
It seems to be the most tweakable to be able to get the settings just right for your speed and style of writing.
Plus it's quick and easy to swap between different modes of input (handwriting, typing, drawing freehand, highlighting)
Got my U8 today and here's my initial impression:
Plus - 1. Immediately went to English, no Chinese. EZ setup. 2. Several choices for watch faces. Several choices for menu icons. Some are color and big. 3. Love the vibration for notification. 4. Speaker while on phone good. 5. Phone pick up works good.
Cons - 1. Washes out in sunlight bad. That's a show stopper for me. 2. Have to turn off phone Bluetooth and use handset for a private call. Switch is in my phone app and simple but still. 3. I use Touchdown for email and it doesn't notify on the watch. Working on that. 4. Band seems a bit 'soft', not hard rubber.
Added Con - Not having the watch face constantly lit is driving me nuts!

I bought a Pebble. Regardless of whether the U8 has voice input or not if I can't see the face they it's useless to me. And outside that is the case. If that doesn't matter then I'd be willing to sell you mine for a cheaper price than you'll get on line. Wore it a total of 2 days.

Thanks but I'll pass. I'm going to stick with my MotoActv for now unless I can pick up a cheap Galaxy Gear or either the LG G-watch or Moto360 convinces me when released.

Been following another thread ("Elegance U8") and now this one since ordering mine off Ebay a week ago. Got it in the mail today, and I can see your points for both pro and con.
Here are my questions, if anyone knows. (yet)
I remember seeing what the actual phone OS is called somewhere, but can't find it now. EDIT: It's called "Nucleus." Have found some info and a sample download online. Might try and see if I can learn how to develop for it.Though the device plays nice with Android and ios, it's actually neither of those things. If someone knows what the name of it is, is it possible to find a tutorial on coding it somewhere?
The initial reason I ask is:
Not waiting for the manufacturer to patch the "shut off screen" function. I'd like to see if I can figure out how to do this myself, and
Enabling texting. Rather than a traditional keyboard, am thinking a sliding alphabet. A - slide to B - slide to C, etc. A pain in the butt, but probably less so than trying to use a keyboard. Picture the "carousel" from the Kindle Fire series, but with letters / numbers / symbols. Also, as suggested earlier in this thread texting with use of the mic, if possible.
Not saying I'd be able to do any of this, but I have limited experience doing some dev work in Android (through Unity) and am wondering if it's possible to self teach this OS, figuring that we quite probably won't see a lot of feature updates from whoever the manufacturer is of this product.

I've had my watch for about a week now, and I gotta say, for the price, it's pretty killer! I wish there was more development for it besides distributing firmware and flash tools.
I've noticed that when you activate Google Voice search and texting with the watch connected, it uses the watch mic to pick up your voice. I was thinking it might be cool to find a way to trigger voice search and voice texting from the watch, since you can already use it for voice input as long as you trigger the feature on your phone. Have you made any progress on trying to develop for the u8?
Also, I believe I read that they're going to release an SDK for MediaTek devices, such as this watch. Might be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
Wish there was a way to add a count down timer to this watch. It needs to have the timer with a start/stop button on the screen as well a reset button for the timer. so If I set it to 30secons, when I hit the reset after the 30s is up it will reset it back to 30secs again.
I need to root my phone so I can turn off a few notifications that I do not want to transmit.
