Battery life assessment - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I find the OPT's battery life to be pretty disappointing, and a bit inconsistent over time.
I rooted and installed Amplify with some pretty aggressive settings. I have also tried Powernap, but disabled it when I saw it had very little impact.
Below are today's stats for my battery, which is just about 20% after 13 hours of moderate use.
It looks to me like wakelock should be under control (1% of battery in GSAM), but why is the phone awake so often then? Plus there was some odd GPS behavior: what is your opinion on this?
I hope I am not breaking any rules. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

You're not reading the GSam stats properly, your wakelocks are almost equal to your screen time, and like 28% of your screen off time.. Not good. Your awake time percentage is roughly three times what mine is. You may have a kernel wakelock rather than apps causing problems but can't tell without wakelock detector or similar.

Thanks, will try wakelock detector and report back

Can't confirm your disappointment...
In my opinion it's OK to have roundabout 2,5h DOT and last half battery with an Lollipop rom

Wow, wakelock detector revealed a massive drain from the fingerprint scanner... Probably due to the fact that I keep the phone in my pocket with no case, so it turns on very frequently only to "read" my thigh through the fabric.
I tried disabling fingerprint scanner and had immediate benefits on standby time. I wonder if this means I will be unable to ever use this great feature, or if sensitivity will be adjusted in future OTAs.
Screen on time remains rather poor though, or at least a far cry from the 5 hours everyone else seems to get.

My battery with screen off goes down 52% after 2 days. Have 2.1, latest custom kernel, greenify + amplify. the culprit is mobile standby as there are parts of house with bad reception. airplane mode not an option

Last night I tested battery drainage overnight from around 11pm to 7am.
I lost 3% total.
I set the phone to LTE (WiFi off) and disabled Auto-Sync Data under Accounts.
3% overnight is not bad IMHO.

Hi guys,
The standby time on OPT is very bad, however if I use it I get amazing SOT.
I am gettng these 2 kernel wakelocks in OPT, qpnp_fg_memaccess & qpnp_fg_update_sram.
These are always in top 3 wakelocks. I tried to search about them but could not find anything.
Can anyone tell me what are these and why do they occur and how can i avoid them?

So ... why don't you keep it somewhere else? Or put it in a flip case? That would be an easy remedy without sacrificing usability too much. I never really get it why people deliberately expose their thighs and possibly also their reproductive organs to so much radio waves ... or keep their mobile connection activated over night ...

Actually I have solved this by always pocketing the phone with the screen facing away

I am using Sky dragon ROM and Boeflla v18
Used 70 % battery in 23 hours with around 6 Hrs active. so it is good. Mostly Used in real racing 3 and asphalt. Plus I am running several xposed mods and Layers Themes

[Test] Battery Draining

Ok, I've been thinking about this for a while now so I'm going to make a test to decide if I really need a battery saver. I'm making this test for myself purely but I thought someone might wanted to see the results as well so here we go.
The gear:
Samsung Galaxy S2, non-rooted
2000 mah Samsung battery
The competitors
Phone on its own
JuiceDefender Ultimate
GreenPower Free
The settings
Prefer Wifi over data
Connect every 30 min to sync
No night settings (to be fair against the others)
Screen brightness: Auto
I know the battery savers are made to save battery when not using your phone so the screen will be locked the phone only used for a small amount of time between chargings.
The phone is unplugged at 100% and I will continue down to 30% before charging again. I will only be testing each one once, as of now at least.
We'll see how it goes over the next days so feel free to ask questions and such.
Many people I know with an S2 use battery saving apps but i really see no point in them, when we used to compare our stock phones running the same stock ROM there was minimal battery difference. Haptic feedback will be off or on? That makes a big difference.
You should put in a custom ROM to see how much better it is compared to stock.
i look forward to seeing the results of this test though
If I got it correctly haptic feedback is phone vibration on touch, right? That's off at least, never liked it. I'd like to put a custom ROM but I don't want to root the phone, yet.. Maybe in a few months or a year...
I will be updating this as we go along. At the moment we are at 96% with 3 hours of sleep time and only a few minutes of screen time.
Ermm, can I ask does task killer drain your battery? Sorry if I ask the wrong question.

task killer will drain battery if the programs you closed restarts, use advance task killer and ignore those that do,you may need it for those apps that didnt close properly
im interested in your trial, juice defender service was failing to run on my s2, it ended up eating my battery restarting the service.
im looking to save power as i lose 15% over night with flight mode while i hear people lose 1,2%
Yes Android is a bit different than computer OS. To start an app drains more battery than just pushing the "back"-button and let it be in stand by so don't use task killers.
Yea I have had trouble some times with the battery saver draining quite a lot over the night but usually it has been because I had a mail as a widget with push-notification so the battery saver wouldn't disable internet but almost push all my other accounts as well. That was my solution at least. We'll see how this goes.
4h in 93% battery
15 min scrren time
A little update. You see where we are.

And does anyone know what can have caused this? This is a picture from a few days ago. It has happened maybe 10 times over the last 2 months. Simply the phone gets hot and the only way to unlock the screen is to remove the battery, refit it and then start it. And then it shows this massive drain.
Okay we got 1 day 13 hours down to 30% with 30 min of screen time. Next up is the Juice Defender Ultimate with night settings off.
An update for you all. As you can see JuiceDefender has already passed the "vanilla" time.
I had an odd problem. Sometime during night, the battery suddelny decided to drain at much faster rate and it took it only 6 hours or so to drain from 75% to 15%. I checked with BetterBatteryStats but there seems to be no app that has kept it awake. Anyway, I can't continue with this test spimply because I don't have time for reruns.
What I can say in previous experience:
Vanilla
Great that as soon as a message comes in you get notified immediately.
Unfortunately that's because wifi or data is kept on all the time, draining battery.
JuiceDefender
Usually gives my phone 3-4 days of battery.
It does take some time (up to 15 sec or so) when you unlock the screen to connect and that can be annoying if you are in a hurry.
When I have night settings on to set phone in no vibration, no sound but also have different night setting time for weekends the phone vibrates once at midnight between weekdays and what JuiceDefender recognizes as weekend.
Sometimes it doesn't feel like the apps are updating even though settings are set to allow "dumb apps" to update as well as plenty of time to do so.
GreenPower
I have only had time to use it for a few days and it is only the free version. I will probably buy the premium soon.
It has a better UI than JuiceDefender though not so many settings. I'm not really sure if I need those other settings.
Best thing, it connects instantly to data when I unlock the phone so I can get on to the web or viber or such to see messages directly.
If anyone wants to continue this thread you may do so but I won't make more test as for the moment. Bottom line is that the data turning off when phone's locked really do help with battery life.

Mysterious idle drain

Hello and thanks for reading ,
I am experiencing a very bad tablet battery life since November 2013.In these past month's i have visited forums, flash factory OS,turned off the radio(and wifi), installed many battery saving apps (didn't work), boot safe mode(drain still there), rubbed snake oil(really dangerous) and the battery still drains faster than a monsoon gutter.
Below is a screen shot of the tablet after I left it to idle for one night .

Any suggestions in solving of the problem are much appreciated and no ,i do not like 4.4.2 cause it breaks my FLAC playback (and still [email protected]% perhour)(currently running 4.3)
Thanks and regards shinra_co
I've got exactly the same problem; battery drains very quick even with airplane mode on. Tablet Idle is the culprit according to the power settings. I wonder what this means and how to solve this issue. can hardly use the tablet, i always need to recharge it.

Same here, and this just started a couple of days ago. Usually, with my usage pattern, I only needed to recharge once a week. Just over night this changed to nightly... Quite annoying.

Registering only to add my "me too" to this problem. The battery is depleted in a few hours (6 to 10) when the tablet is turned off, no sleeping, turned off, even after using the recovery menu option in order to force the power down. It is always lightly hot to the touch when it is automatically discharging, again when turned off.
This is my first Asus device and I am trying to request a refund, I don't want a new device, or a repaired one. I want my money back. I am not sure this will happen because it was bought on December, but this is not tolerable
5 Months in and various updates later (KK 4.4.4 KTU84P right now).
The battery still drain away @ 5.0 per hour minimum.
As per original post, I have still not been able to find the source of the drain.
wakelock detector, better battery stats and battery doctor have been of little help this past months.
Assuming it is not software related, what are the chances it is the hardware ie the battery itself being the culprit.
if so i think i'll wait for the rumored 8" nexus tablet.

msm_hsic_host wakelocks. :( halp!

So. I tried updating from CM10.2 to CM11 a few months ago and I encountered a whole mess of wakelock issues that utterly destroyed any semblance of battery life. Compared to 10.2, I literally got half the battery life I was getting, which was not acceptable as a normal day of average usage on 10.2 would end me around 50% and a heavy-use day would have me around 30%. Losing half my battery life is simply not an option.
Using BetterBatteryStats, I discovered that the browser and Google Play Services were both generating absurd numbers of wakelocks via NlpCollectorWakelock. Turning off location services "fixed" this, but also disabled all location services. Not a real useful solution for someone who actually uses location services, especially since there's no "fast" way to enable location services and GPS all at once from location completely off.
This was annoying enough, but then I noticed as well that I was getting another wakelock when on wifi: msm_hsic_host. This didn't happen every time, but it seemed to be entirely linked to using wifi. Again, like the location services wakelocks, this conspired to murder battery life. Rebooting seemed to clear this one, but the fact that it exists at all in CM11 (and does not happen ever in CM10.2) is causing me a problem in that I have to allow wifi to turn itself off when the phone sleeps. This uses less battery than getting stupid wakelocks but not less than simply leaving wifi on all the time in CM10.2. So that's annoying.
These issues conspired to kill my battery life so thoroughly that I flashed back to CM10.2 and everything was fine, but Kitkat brings a lot of great things that I really don't want to give up. So I tried installing CM11 again, this time using the M6 snapshot release. At first, everything was pretty cool and I didn't see any unusual wakelocks, but after a few days, the wakelocks returned. All of the same ones from the nightly I used back in March!
NlpCollectorWakelock on both the Browser and Google Play Services, and msm_hsic_host whenever using wifi. The gremlins were back and my battery started going fast.
This time I tried a few things to help and managed to kill the NlpCollectorWakelock issues simply by using App Ops to prevent Play Services and the Browser from ever being allowed to create a wakelock. That actually worked really, really well to kill those wakelocks and any others (I don't see any reason why either application would need to wakelock my device other than to phone home to Google and tell them where the phone is, and my tests have borne this out, though occasionally the restricted apps will force-close when I wake the phone from sleep).
However, this didn't stop the msm_hsic_host kernel wakelocks. I can't stop them other than by either not using wifi at all (not an option) or allowing the device to power the wifi radio off when the device is asleep, or simply dealing with msm_hsic_host wakelocks when they appear, rebooting the device whenever I catch them. For now this is what I'm doing, letting the device power off my wifi radio, but it's annoying because my signal at home is bad and I sometimes miss notifications when in certain rooms of my apartment due to dropped cell signal.
Anyway, I don't really want to have to go back to CM10.2 again. But having my battery randomly slaughtered by msm_hsic_host wakelocks are making it somewhat less useful. I had this wakelock hit me tonight and for five hours the phone was awake when it should have been asleep for four hours and fifty minutes... and I dropped from 75% to 55% battery in that five hours. That's absolutely crippling.
Some things are attached below--unfortunately I didn't take screenshots of BetterBatteryStats before rebooting and the log doesn't stick around after reboots in Kitkat like it did in 4.3.

ROM: CyanogenMod 11 M6 release
Kernel: Stock CM11 kernel

Wakelock Detector and Greenify... are ur best friends on the Note 3.
Turnoff wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc when not in use. Set CPU to on demand. I always have power saver on unless I want to run a game... doesn't seem to effect anything else.
There are a ton of tips for Note 3 battery life...just search here...
I also use LUX for screen brightness, that made a big difference also. Change you wallpapers to darker colors... mine are some sort of black background...
I can make through the day with reasonable usage on Hyperdrive RLS8 and still have battery left...
Haven't tried BajaROM yet...

Thank you for your response. I have greenify'd most of my daily apps and I use wake lock detector and still cant find out the culprit here. It says that my SCREEN is taking up 30% of my battery life after just 2 hours unplugged and minimal use and I'm down to 82%. Can my phone just be inherently defective????
This DOESNT feel right. I NEVER had any complaints of battery with my NOTE 2

Check your data usage. I had the similar situation, saw nothing in the battery usage area....but then checked data usage. I had over 2 Gigs of data usage from EMAIL in only 2 weeks! I had been using the std email app...and get maybe 10 emails a day. Obviously something goofy going on in the sync. Yet battery usage showed next to nothing for the sync process or email app.
I removed my accounts from the email package, froze the email package and installed AquaMail and my battery usage cut by at least half....my data use flatlined.
Obviously it takes power to use the radio for a Gig a week of data....but that does NOT seem to show in battery usage.
so check your data usage...see if email is way out in front. That may be your problem.

I had the same issue with battery life after I flashed to and of the KK roms. My problem was Greenify, and I don't know why. Removing it didn't solve my problem so I'd restart from the beginning. My drain is less than 1% per hour idle without it and almost 10% per hour running all the same apps with greenify in different settings. Jasmine ROM just drained for me all the time.
*first post, be nice. I only joined because of all the trouble I went through to get my battery life back.

LG G6 very short SOT

Hi, I have issue with my lg g6 .
The phone is about 1 months old but I reach very poor SoT max 2,5 h.
I check the main forum threads, but i cannot fix the issue

- during this 2 hours I use only chrome/messenger/instagram
- it does not matter if I used wifi or data

Hi I did, how you told.
I charged the phone up to 100% and left for 30 minutes without any use and captured following screenshots.
Do I understand correctly that the phone is always awake because of the lg gnss bloatware?
are you getting same battery life on lte and wifi
your lte signal looking too low
if it fluctuate a lot then it will take a lot of battery .
0% deep sleep
I don't mean to be glib, but the advice for battery issues is always the same (and mind-numbing basic):
1. Remove unnecessary apps
2. Factory reset the phone
None of the dozens of other tweaks mentioned here make a difference for most people.
And you can't do anything about signal strength.

I supposed that all the tweaks can barely help. I had hope that I could find some fix before reset the factory settings. In some way the phone is to be used and it is simply annoing the set the whole setting from scratch after reset....
But I think I don't have any other possibility (or I can wait for a Pie and hope for the improvement after the update)

Try to disable the WIFI and Bluetooth searching for improve the location. And then do again the test to see the deep sleep.
With accubattery app, you can estimate how"healthy" your battery is.
In normal usage, you would get about 18% of battery usage per hour with screen on, and max 1% with screen off
I made some tests with AccuBattery and the drain on screen on is unacceptable about 25-28%. The battery health is about 96%.
I use mcs magisk module with 90/80% config since day one with greenify + xposed module and after a year of relatively heavy use I'm still getting ~6h SoT (35% brightness). Maybe you should try to greenify some apps? Without root you have limited options though.
